we want to begin this half hour with lawmakers united investigating claims russia trying to influence the presidential election. >> even though the u.s. intelligence community says it's confident russia was behind the hacks donald trump is still questioning those claims and he's blaming the democrats for leaking that information. likely choice for secretary of state rex tillerson is coming under scrutiny. with his relationship with vladimir putin. more now from abc's mary bruce. >> reporter: donald trump digging in blasting a "washington post" report that russia interfered in the u.s. election to help him win. >> i think it's ridiculous. i think it's just another excuse. i don't believe it. >> reporter: and pointing fingers across the aisle. >> i think the democrats are putting it out because they suffered one of the greatest defeats in the history of politics in this country. >> reporter: a person with direct knowledge tells abc news there is evidence that both democrats and republicans were targeted but that only information hacks from democrats was made public. but the rnc says it wasn't breached. >> the rnc was not hacked. >> trump still questions if russia was involved at all even after 17 u.s. intelligence agencies concluded that the russian government initiated the hacking. >> they have no idea if it's russia or china or somebody, could be somebody sitting in a bed somebody.

they have no idea. >> reporter: a bipartisan group of lawmakers is calling for an investigation, saying reports of russian interference should alarm every american. trump's recent comments are raising serious questions about whether he trusts intelligence. and he admits he's not receiving the classified presidential daily briefings, at least not every day. >> i get it when i need it. i don't have to be told -- you know, i'm like a smart person. i don't have to be told the same thing and the same words every single day for the next eight years. >> reporter: trump's secretary of state will inherit the complex russian relationship, and there are concerns about trump's likely pick, exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson and his deep ties to president putin. >> i've known him since 1999 and i have a very close relationship with him. >> reporter: but trump says those ties are a good thing. >> to me, a great advantage is he knows many of the players. >> reporter: no announcement has been made yet, but trump tweeted that tillerson is a world class player and dealmaker. stay tuned. trump is also trying to dampen concerns about conflicts of interest.

he plans to leave his great business in total, but his children will not. >> my executives will run it with my children. it's a big question. it's a great company. but i'm going to have nothing to do with management. >> reporter: now we're also learning more about which members of the trump family will be joining him in washington. trump's daughter ivanka and husband jared are now also eyeing a move to d.c. trump says he's looking into what roles legally they can play in his administration. ivanka has expressed an interest in women's issues while trump says he'd love his son-in-law's help on deals with other nations and peace in the middle east. mary bruce, abc news, the white house. and speaking of the middle east, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says he's excited about working with the president-elect to dismantle the iran nuclear deal. netanyahu tells cbs's "60 minutes" there are various ways of undoing the nuclear agreement which has been a source of

friction between him and president obama for several years. he says he believes donald trump will be a good friend to israel. >> i know donald trump. i know him very well. and i think his attitude, his support for israel is clear. he feels very warmly about the jewish state, about the jewish people, and about jewish people. >> reporter: netanyahu's comments seem to defy critics who've accused trump of tolerating anti-semitism. breaking news right now from louisiana. a jury has returned a guilty verdict in the case of a man who fatally shot new orleans saints player will smith. the trial of 29-year-old cardell hayes hayes went through the weekend after sunday's closing arguments. jurors found hayes guilty of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter for the wounding of smith's wife. they decided against a second-degree murder conviction which carries with it a life sentence. that said, hayes faces up to 40

years behind bars when he is sentenced in mid february. survivors are blaming shoddy construction for the collapse of a church in nigeria that killed at least 160 people. worshippers were inside the church saturday when the metal girders fell and the iron roof caved in. witnesses describe the gruesome aftermath with blood and bodies scattered everywhere. officials fear the death toll will go higher. also in africa and another church in egypt the scene of an apparent terror attack sunday. no group with has claimed responsibility so far. and in turkey an attack near a soccer stadium has left dozens dead. abc's lama hassan reports on the violence from overseas. >> reporter: the death toll in the turkish terror attacks climbing to 38. 30 of them police officers targeted in near simultaneous blasts at a soccer stadium. militants linked to the kurdish rebel group the pkk claiming responsibility. the government vowing revenge stepping up the fight against

the recent wave of terror attacks in turkey. terror that is spreading. in egypt, an a attack on cairo's largest christian church. eyewitnesses say a woman planted more than 26 pounds of explosives hidden in a bag, shattering what was a solemn sunday service. at least 24 killed. most women and children. the columns were smoldering, people strewn on the floor and on the walls, this man says. everything was broken. outside the outrage and anger erupting. protests against terrorism. demanding national unity. egypt's president is declaring three days of national mourning saying a religious war is being waged, vowing to hunt down the attackers. lama hassan, abc news, london. there is snow on the ground in the midwest and it is coming to the northeast. a delta jet arriving from detroit to buffalo slid off the taxiway after landing.

there were no injuries there. more than 1400 flights were canceled yesterday at the chicago airports with nearly seven inches of snow recorded at o'hare. already there are dozens of cancellations today at o'hare and in detroit. while the upper midwest and great lakes are clearing the snow, the storm is moving east overnight and on its heels we'll see some of the coldest temperatures so far this season with windchills dipping as low as minus 35. >> wow. maybe those temperatures played a part in last night's big game. it was a big match-up between the giants and the cowboys renewing their heated division rivalry on a cold night in new jersey at the meadowlands. you can see how cold it was. it was a defensive battle. the score 7-3 late in the third. then number 13, odell beckham, went all out for that run. dallas defense couldn't stop him to get to the end zone. the cowboys had the ball with

a sheriff's deputy in florida is being praised as a hero this morning and understandably for his quick thinking that saved the life of a 15-month-old boy. >> it was a chance encounter for the deputy, who wasn't even supposed to be at work that day. abc's adrienne bankert has the story. >> reporter: a frightening lesson on the importance of cpr. playing out in a florida dmv. shakira nelson's 15-month-old son not breathing. >> at that moment i was in panic mode. >> reporter: surveillance video shows hillsborough county sheriff's deputy steve donaldson

leaping into action. you can see him listening to the baby's chest. >> i never realized how small babies were until they're in your arms. but the overwhelming responsibility of this job is never understood until you have a baby like cory in your arms and he's not breathing. >> reporter: donaldson laying the toddler on the ground, administering compressions. in those critical moments before the ambulance could arrive, cory started to breathe again. >> i said a little prayer and i said god, give me strength to save this baby. >> reporter: thankfully, deputy donaldson had just retrained in cpr three weeks ago. cpr saves more than 92,000 individuals annually. but amazingly, only about 3.5% of americans train in the technique each year. the hero reunited with cory and his grateful mom. >> i look at the video, and i said, thank god for deputy donaldson because without him my baby wouldn't be here. >> reporter: this was clearly a case of right place right time. deputy donaldson was not even scheduled to work that day.

incarceration, rarely even mentioned in the statistics. the children left behind by mothers behind bars. >> yeah, and we're taking an up close look at the powerful mother and child reunions that are helping to get these families back on track. we're "up all nightline" with abc's juju cheng. >> andrew lejac is raising four daughters alone but not by choice. >> she's missed christmas every year, the girls' birthdays. >> reporter: for three years worth of holidays and birthdays, their mom ruby has been in prison. tomorrow he and his girls will set out to visit. >> it can be rough when she's not here. when there's something exciting going on or something that happened that's painful or -- even for a little concert for me. >> reporter: 98 miles from home ruby is here, at the only women's prison in michigan serving a four-year sentence for home invasion. >> i got hooked on cocaine pretty good and i started

breaking into houses to feed my addiction. >> reporter: but mom's punishment is taking a toll on her kids. andrew is left to pick up the pieces until she's released next year. >> i'm missing out on my daughter beginning high school. i missed my youngest going to kindergarten. field trips. i mean, they're becoming young ladies. and i'm missing that. >> reporter: the girls are up early. >> grab the toothpaste. >> reporter: they can only afford to visit a few times a year. and this day is special. they'll get a few precious but fleeting hours with their mom outside the confines of the visitation room. it's part of a program designed to soften the damage done to kids when a parent is incarcerated. as they head toward michigan, mom ruby is at a prison workshop with 51 other inmates. the lucky few who through good behavior have qualified for the program.

>> i'm giving you some homework to help you to be that mama. all right? >> reporter: here they're learning what it takes to be a good mother. this the first step of the one day with god camp, founded by scottie barnes, who herself grew up with a father in prison. >> their actions is what's brought them here. they've made mistakes. but i say it's like fixing an old piece of furniture. you have to take off the old paint, prepare it and put on new paint. >> andrew and ruby's girls are just four of the roughly 3 million american children with a parent behind bars. this month's statistic on new prisoners here tells the story. 60% suffered trauma. nearly 80% like ruby struggle with drugs or alcohol. perhaps most striking, reports that nearly 70% of inmates are themselves children of prisoners. >> how do you break that cycle? >> i want them to invest in their children's life and be

that's a good deal when it comes down to it. so the world's longest airplane ride has been announced by qantas. i'm a fan of long rides, especially when you get to go on a fancy plane like the singapore airlines, a-380 with their lovely flight attendants and their lovely seats and the turndown service. that's nice. but qantas is launching -- they will launch what will be the world's longest nonstop flight. it will go from perth, australia all the way to london. 17 1/2 hours. i do kind of sniff out some sort of marketing ploy here in that tickets go on sale next march, the flights aren't until spring of 2018. >> well, people want to have their bragging rights of being on the longest flight. >> yeah. well ahead of time we are letting you know this will fun to happen. >> not fun to be in the last row but -- >> can you imagine? >> if you're in had business class -- >> that's the way to do it. >> this is pretty cool.

through the weekend. >> and it centered on will smith who was shot and killed overnight. after nearly six hours of deliberations, jurors convicted hayes had of man slaughter.. details on the case now from abc's phillip menna. >> prosecutors calling this road rage shootinging an execution. jurors hearing closing arguments in the killing of former new orleans saints star will smith. cardell hayes shooting smith eight times, seven in the back. smith's wife struck by the gunfire, too. >> i need an ambulance. >> speaking in his own defense, hayes telling jurors he opened fire fearing for his life, claiming smith attacked him and grabbed a gun. i know for a fact i was going to get shot, hayes said. hayes claiming he heard a gunshot before pulling the trigger. although police say a gun found in smith's car was never fired. >> the testimony he gave in his own defense has been contradicted by third party

but then we have a significant amount of snow that's going to fall throughout utah, montana, going into the north central part of the country. this is going to slide through along with that arctic air. also snow expected to continue to tabulate between 6 to 12 inches of snow throughout michigan going into new york, buffalo specifically, all the way throughout the northeast and at least three to six throughout a chunk of the northeast. kendis, marci? >> folks in buffalo are like three to six, that's fine, no big deal. thanks to paul there. president-elect donald trump is dismissing a "washington post" report that russia used hackers to sway the election in his favor. a bipartisan group of senators is now calling for an investigation into allegations of russian interference. and 17 u.s. intelligence agencies had already blamed russia for the pre-election cyber attacks. but trump is rejecting those claims and pointing the finger at the democrats. >> i think it's ridiculous. i think it's just another excuse. i don't believe it.

i think the democrats are putting it out because they suffered one of the greatest defeats in the history of politics in this country. >> "the new york times" is reporting that both the democratic and republican national committees were hacked but only information about the dnc was leaked. rnc chair and incoming white house chief of staff reince priebus insists no rnc systems were compromised. and trump is expected to decide on a secretary of state any day now. exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson has emerged as the likely pick. but questions are being raised by members of both parties about tillerson's deep ties to russia. tillerson says he's known vladimir putin for nearly 20 years and has a close relationship with him. trump sees that as a great advantage, calling tillerson a world-class player and a deal maker. a southern california man

has been charged with a hate crime after a violent incident outside of a mosque in simi valley. police say john madison confronted worshippers outside of the mosque and then stabbed a man. they say the victim was targeted because of his religion. police are also looking for a second suspect who also may have been involved in the incident. about a dozen guests were injured in a fire at a michigan ski resort this weekend. it broke out in the main lodge of the born highlands resort sunday morning. there were more than 100 guests staying in the lodge at the time the entire resort and its slopes are now closed with the busiest time of the year approaching. and atf investigators have finished their work at the warehouse in oakland, california where 36 people died in that fire. new details about the investigation are expected to be revealed tomorrow during a news conference with atf and other agencies. a refrigerator has been ruled out as a cause of the fire, but agents still suspect it was something electrical. a former member of the "brady bunch" cast has been fired by a radio station after some anti-gay remarks. susan olsen used to co-host a political talk show on the digital station which is based in l.a. olsen played cindy brady on the legendary '70s tv show. she was fired after an online altercation with an openly gay
