to jfk airport after a phoned in bomb threat. the flight took off from houston en route to germany when the pilot made the decision to land in new york city. the plane was searched and no bomb was found, but passengers are spending the night in hotels. the international red cross says time is runninging out for the tens of thousands of civilians trapped in eastern aleppo. syria government forces control nearly all the city now with rebels forced into a few neighborhoods. russia, which backed syria, refused a u.s. plea for cease fire to allow the rebels and civilians to leave the city peacefully. and there's new details about the man suspected of blowing himself up inside a cairo chapel during sunday mass. the man seen here in surveillance video has been arrested and beaten by police two years ago after taking part in an islamist demonstration. that's according to the man's attorney. no group claimed responsibility for the bombing. president-elect donald trump will make it official, his top cabinet pick this morning by naming his nominee to be secretary of state.

that choice is expected to be rex tillerson. he's the ceo of oil giant exxon mobil. tillerson already has extensive ties overseas, particularly with russian president vladimir putin. he awarded russia's top honor by foreigners three years ago, and ties with russia questioned by senators who have to approve the nomination. in the meanwhile, donald trump is locked in a testy fight with the nation's intelligence community. their disagreements center on russia's interference in the presidential election. we get more now from abc's brian ross. >> reporter: the central white house fixture for decades, but donald trump now says he will not need the daily presidential briefing once in office. as president-elect, he's only received four of them. >> you know, i'm like a smart person. i don't have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years. >> reporter: it is one more slap in the face for the 21,000 people who work for the cia. >> i think it would be devastating to hear that the

incoming president doesn't value the intelligence that will come out of the agency. >> reporter: it follows trump's efforts to publicly discredit the cia over what it's saying about russia. >> they are fighting among themselves. they're not sure. >> reporter: the senior intelligence official tells abc news, he's disparaging and insulting every analyst currently in the intelligent community working hard to protect the united states. forced to choose today between the cia and trump and russia. >> the russians are not our friends. >> the top senate republican backed the cia. >> but i have the highest confidence in the intelligence community and the central intelligence agencies. >> reporter: if the mistrust gets worse, the cia officers could have a hard time trusting trump and his national security team when it comes to russia. >> they could be afraid anything they tell the white house will get back to russia. >> reporter: and it's far from the only controversy facing

donald trump. he had been expected to announce this thursday how he would resolve potential conflicts of interest between running his country and vast international business empire. now team officials say the announcement is put off until next month because trump is too busy picking his cabinet. brian ross, abc news, new york. a soccer player who survived that deadly plane crash in colombia is conscious after waking from a coma over the weekend. julio vinetto has no memory of the crash. the team in the midst of a cinderella season was heading to a championship. netto apparently asked about the outcome of the game and why he was unable to play. doctors are withholding information about the crash for now until netto is stable. 71 people died in that plane crash, including 19 of netto's teammates. only six people survived. qwest diagnostics suffered a security breach. exposing the health information for thousands of its customers. the company says names, dates of birth, lab results, and in some

instances, telephone numbers were hacked. no financial or insurance information compromised in the meantime. check this out. surveillance video of a fowl thief wearing a plastic bag and armed with a bucket. this, of course, is at a store in miami, florida. you can see the suspect getting stuck inside the locked area where the birds are kept. he's then spotted falling from a ladder that he used to get over the barbed wire fence. the suspect fled with dozens of birds, some which are personal pets of the store owner. this is the second time in recent months that the store has been robbed. i know earlier we said that it looked like divo from the '80s. >> yeah, whip it, the video. >> looked like a flock of sea gulls, boom. >> wow. >> i know. i went a long way for that. >> yeah, you tried really hard to connect dots on that one. whew-hoo! you want to explain it further? you good?

late monday night. authorities say the suspect shot the officers as they tried to arrest him for driving stolen vehicle. both are expected to survive, but you may recall earlier on monday morning, two other officers were shot and the suspect killed during a drug raid. last week, two officers were killed while responding to a domestic call at georgia's southwestern state university. in el paso, texas, now, a terrifying scene of an officer struck by a car. police say officer andy rodriguez was conducting a sobriety test when an alleged drunk driver struck him. rodriguez pushed the man undergoing the test out of the way just before he was hit. officer rodriguez was released from the hospital had on monday. the prosecution could wrap tomorrow in the trial of dylann roof who admits to killing nine people at a black church in south carolina. the prosecution's final witness will be a woman who survived that shooting. yesterday, jurors learned a chilling revelation that roof

had other targets in mind as well. abc's steve osunsami is in charleston with more. >> reporter: strange moments in this courthouse. we saw dylann roof and his lawyers laugh iing together durg breaks with the grieving families of his alleged victims sitting nearby. there is nothing funny here at all. prosecutors shared words from the racist manifesto and showed items pulled from the car after the murders at this historic black church in june of 2015. a confederate flag, a blocked under a pillow and a burned american flag in the trunk. there was a list of these other black churches. in his fbi confession, roof said he considered other targets. >> i thought about going to, like, a black festival or something like that, but there's security and stuff and you've got to wait for the day. you can't do it whenever you're ready. >> reporter: he explained to the fbi agents he's a white

nationalist and couldn't care less about black lives. >> do you have any remorse? >> i think it's too soon. >> reporter: jurors learned roof should have never been able to buy the gun. surveillance video show him coming and going from a gun store in april, a whole two months before the killings. a background check should have denied him a the firearm because of a previous arrest for drug possession. this was a system failure. in court, the gun store owner testified he didn't hear back from the government until june 29th, nearly two weeks after the killings. steve osunsami, abc news, charleston. >> steve, thank you. in new orleans, family and friends bid an emotional farewell to the former nfl player fatally shot during a road rage incident. hundreds attended the service for joe mcknight where he was described as caring and thoughtful. five of his former new york jets teammates served as pal bearers at the service. to the weather now in the upper midwest and northeast. could see record low temperatures this week. millions of us won't see the mercury rise above freezing for several days.

every year. but we've come a long way in diagnosing it sooner and treating it more effectively, and new research suggesting that staying socially active may be one simple way to improve a woman's odds when faced with this disease. an international team of researchers studied the social habits of more than 9,000 women with breast cancer in the u.s. and china finding that women who were socially isolated had a 43% higher risk of cancer recurrence and a 64% risk of early death from breast cancer over a ten-year period. on the other hand, women with larger social circles had a better chance of surviving and not having cancer return. it doesn't prove strengthening social connection tilts the odds against cancer, but it is good news for loved ones who need leaned on in times of sickness, and for others, it's a reminer that finding ways to establish social connections through support groups or by other means may have more benefits than we know. i'm lana zach. >> interesting. so we must all be more social

♪ happy holidays happy holidays ♪ so this morning, speaking of happy holidays, we are adding a jewish twist to a favorite christmas holiday treat. everybody wins. >> yes, everybody wins. taking alone, making either fruit cake or rugelach can be intimidating for even the most season of bakers. but this morning, we're checking out a quick and easy mashup. >> i think i got you saying it wrong. >> yeah, you did. we're going into insomniac kitchen. >> we're getting into the spirit of christmas and hanukkah with joy the baker who is going to show us how to make fruit cake rugelach cookies. >> yes. all the flavors of fruit cake without the nasty fruit cake. so we're going to start with making the batter. it's cream cheese.

i like to give it a quick zhuszh with the mixer. this is the crisco adding a nice tenderness. you want to add the sugar. add the vanilla and pinch of salt. into this, we will add our flour. that's two and a half cups of flour. slowly fold it together. so this is coming together. it's pretty thick, bus that's where you want it. it has a big job of holding all of these dried fruit and nuts. i'm going to dump it on the counter. do you want to roll it into a disk. you can't get wrong. >> a disk? >> yeah. make it a disk and then we'll wrap this in plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator. while the dough's chilling, we make all the filling. i got dates in here. i'm doing cranberries. golden raisins. a trinity of color.

and i'll do chopped walnuts as well. >> all right. >> i'm mixing brown sugar, spice, regular sugar. i'm adding our finally chopped walnuts to our fruit filling. i'm just going to toss it with my hands. i'm going to set this aside and i'm going to go and grab our chilled dough so we can roll it out and start to fill it. this is the fun part. we're going to roll it out and start to fill it. flour this area really well. we don't want the dough to stick. we want it about a quarter inch thick and about 9 inches around. what we're going to do is lightly spread some raspberry jam over the top of this. do you want to sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on it? i will follow you with the dried fruit and nut mixture. use this knife and slice some wedges. i'm going to start at my wide

edge. roll it into a rugelach shape. okay. let's do our baking sheet. just place some of the baking sheet. i'm going to grab a little brush to brush with egg wash. that'll help them get even more golden brown. and i'll just sprinkle them with a little more cinnamon sugar. i'll put these in the oven. cookies bake for 15 minutes or so. we cooled them. it's time to try them. >> really good. >> totally delicious. >> i love the different textures. >> crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside. lots of fruit. >> how do we get you in our homes? i need you to bake for me. >> invite me over. just have wine and i'll come over. >> thank you so much, joy the baker, and happy holidays. >> happy holidays. >> all right. i'm adding nicki and joy now to

a bed someplace. >> reporter: trump tweeting, unless you catch hackers in the act, it is very hard to determine who is doing the hacking. why wasn't this brought up before the election? but it was. in october, 17 american government intelligence agencies including the cia released this rare statement saying the u.s. intelligence community is confident that the russian government directed the recent compromises of e-mails. >> when we say we're confident, i think it speaks for itself. >> reporter: trump still refusing to believe it. >> it could be russia. i don't really think it is, but who knows. >> reporter: the president-elect also disputing reports that the cia believes russia's goal was to hurt hillary clinton and help trump get elected. >> i think it's ridiculous. i think it's just another excuse. i don't believe it. >> reporter: a much different take from the white house on mr. trump. >> he called on russia to hack secretary clinton, so he certainly had a good sense of whose side this activity was

coming down on. >> russia, if you're listening, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. >> reporter: the new focus on russia comes with trump poised to name exxon's ceo, rex tillerson, secretary of state whose ties to russian president vladimir putin go back decades. >> i've known him since 1999, and i have a very close relationship with him. >> reporter: on gma, trump's senior adviser, kellyanne conway, tried to downplay tillerson's russian connection. >> it's not like he's with him at the local bar. >> reporter: not vodka shots, but this video shows a champagne toast, putin awarding him. russia's order of friendship, an honor given to foreigners. over the weekend, marco rubio tweeted being a friend of vladimir is not an attribute i am hoping for from a secretary of state. a small group is asking for more information on hackings and

listen to what clinton's campaign chairman said, electors have a solemn responsibility under the constitution, and we support their efforts to have their questions addressed. this is a very aggressive stance by the clinton campaign, the farthest they've gone so far to challenge the legitimacy of donald trump's presidency. but they know there is no mechanism in place to brief those electors right now. tom llamas, abc news, washington. and one more note about the election. the recount taking place in wisconsin, well, it is now officially over and donald trump certified, again, as the winner. trump defeated hillary clinton by more than 22,000 votes. the recount changed the final wisconsin results by fewer than 1,800 votes. jill stein says the recount was not about changing the outcome of the election, but meant to validate the vote and restore confidence in the system. donald trump tweeted saying the final wisconsin vote is in and we picked up an additional 131 votes. the dems and green party can now rest, #scam. it appears the battle for allepo is all but over. the syrian government now has control of most of the city.

a victory there gives assad's regime control of syria's five major cities, but believed civilian withes are still trapped in the few remaining rebel-controlled neighborhoods. the united nations is worried about reports of atrocities against the civilians. the red cross says time is running out. meanwhile, the u.s. efforts to get a cease-fire and peaceful end to the siege failed this weekend. that would have allowed rebels and families and other civilians safe passage out of the city, but the russians rejected it. the state department spokesman john kirby said the u.s. was frustrated, but not surprised. russian air strikes killed 1500 civilians in iraq, far greater than the death toll of 173 that u.s. officials reported. a london based project called air wars released the report. they blame the discrepancy on the way that civilian deaths are investigating and called for transparency in the process. president obama will not

declassify a so-called torture report before leaving officer. the 7,000 page report details the tactics used by the cia on detainees after 9/11. some u.s. senators had pressed the president to release the report. it'll be preserved in his presidential records and won't be eligible for declassification before 2028. in new york, a flight diverted to jfk airport because of a bomb threat. flight 441 made a landing after a phoned in threat. the plane was taken to a remote area of the airport and searched, but investigators did not find anything suspicious. and the man charged with killing nine people at a south carolina church apparently had other targets in mind, as well. law enforcement agents told the jury that dylann roof said he was just too worn out from the deadly shooting to pursue those other targets. the jury watched his recorded

confession discussing why he ultimately chose to target african-americans at church. >> i thought of a black festival or something like that, but you got security and stuff and wait for the day and you can't do it whenever you're ready. >> investigators testifying today, and prosecutors say polly shepherd, a survivor, will be the witness. the winter weather far from over, people in the midwest to new england are still cleaning up from the massive snowfall of the past few days. detroit had 10.6 inches of snow, 5 inches more than the record. a little more snow is possible today, but now the upper half of the country is preparing for extremely cold temperatures later in this week. some areas of the midwest will see temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below average. even washington, d.c. may not see mercury rise above freezing. the west coast is bracing for a series of storms, which means heavy rain and snow in the mountains.

more now from abc's alex perez. >> reporter: that massive storm making for a treacherous commutes from the great lakes to the northeast. in maine, slick roads turn deadly. at least two dead in separate accidents, including a father who was riding in a jeep with his wife as well as three children when their car collided with a dump truck. >> slow down. that's the best advice i can give anybody. once you break traction, it is not coming back. a snowy emergency in minneapolis sunday, 900 wrecks in one 24-hour period in minnesota this weekends. this sheriff's dash cam capturing the danger on i-35, pickup truck spinning out of control nearly striking a state trooper. many areas recovering from the weekend blast of snow, parts of new york slammed with more than 36 inches. storms have snarled air travel, too. more than 2,000 fights cancelled this weekend, most of them in chicago. cars parked at o'hare covered in snow. and here in chicago, it's only beginning. temperatures expected to plunge and it will feel well below zero this week which means this slushy mess will freeze making conditions even more dangerous.

pilot made the decision to land in new york city. the plane was searched and no bomb was found, but passengers are spending the night in hotels. the international red cross says time is runninging out for the tens of thousands of civilians trapped in eastern aleppo. syria government forces control nearly all the city now with rebels forced into a few neighborhoods. russia, which backed syria, refused a u.s. plea for cease fire to allow the rebels and civilians to leave the city peacefully. and there's new details about the man suspected of blowing himself up inside a cairo chapel during sunday mass. the man seen here in surveillance video has been arrested and beaten by police two years ago after taking part in an islamist demonstration. that's according to the man's attorney. no group claimed responsibility for the bombing. president-elect donald trump will make it official, his top cabinet pick this morning by naming his nominee to be secretary of state. that choice is expected to be rex tillerson.

he's the ceo of oil giant exxon mobil. tillerson already has extensive ties overseas, particularly with russian president vladimir putin. he awarded russia's top honor by foreigners three years ago, and ties with russia questioned by senators who have to approve the nomination. in the meanwhile, donald trump is locked in a testy fight with the nation's intelligence community. their disagreements center on russia's interference in the presidential election. we get more now from abc's brian ross. >> reporter: the central white house fixture for decades, but donald trump now says he will not need the daily presidential briefing once in office. as president-elect, he's only received four of them. >> you know, i'm like a smart person. i don't have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years. >> reporter: it is one more slap in the face for the 21,000

people who work for the cia. >> i think it would be devastating to hear that the incoming president doesn't value the intelligence that will come out of the agency. >> reporter: it follows trump's efforts to publicly discredit the cia over what it's saying about russia. >> they are fighting among themselves. they're not sure. >> reporter: the senior intelligence official tells abc news, he's disparaging and insulting every analyst currently in the intelligent community working hard to protect the united states. forced to choose today between the cia and trump and russia. >> the russians are not our friends. >> the top senate republican backed the cia. >> but i have the highest confidence in the intelligence community and the central intelligence agencies. >> reporter: if the mistrust gets worse, the cia officers could have a hard time trusting trump and his national security team when it comes to russia. >> they could be afraid anything they tell the white house will get back to russia. >> reporter: and it's far from the only controversy facing donald trump.

he had been expected to announce this thursday how he would resolve potential conflicts of interest between running his country and vast international business empire. now team officials say the announcement is put off until next month because trump is too busy picking his cabinet. brian ross, abc news, new york. a soccer player who survived that deadly plane crash in colombia is conscious after waking from a coma over the weekend. helio neto has no memory of the crash. the team in the midst of a cinderella season was heading to a championship. neto apparently asked about the outcome of the game and why he was unable to play. doctors are withholding information about the crash for now until neto is stable. 71 people died in that plane crash, including 19 of neto's teammates. only six people survived. qwest diagnostics suffered a security breach. exposing the health information for thousands of its customers. the company says names, dates of birth, lab results, and in some instances, telephone numbers were hacked.

you can even smell it. the charcoal itself? the charcoal recipe, you do right here in the factory. >> yes. make it right here. >> reporter: a secret recipe? >> family formula. >> reporter: all shades and colors. this is history. doing it this way for more than a hundred years? >> yes. >> reporter: separating the woodblocks from this, the pencils on the right. across the floor, we meet marianne davis, stamping in the company logo and made in the usa. 54 years. you were just a baby when you started. make you proud? >> yes, this is history behind the company. >> reporter: katie says the secret to their success, making the products here. so when the calls come in, they get get their pencils there fast. you're getting orders right now from stores across the america because of the holiday. >> retail stores in america needs them right away, we turn on a dime. >> reporter: you got a lot of calls? >> we got a call from a store that ordered something from china. >> maybe they'll call you first next time. >> reporter: exactly. katie wanted me to try them. i'm from upstate new york, so
