hit the pole and then people were just scattered everywhere. a witness describes the panic when a car plows into a crowded bus stop in san francisco. good afternoon. i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashly. ama and larry are off today. we'll begin with developing news in san francisco. sky 7 is over the scene where a car careened into a bus stop in san francisco's chinatown at stockton and clay street. >> several people were seriously injured, and in that section of stockton street is still shut down right now. we have live team coverage both on the victims and exactly how the crash happened. >> we begin with abc 7 nuts reporter vic lee at the scene. >> we want to start by looking at surveillance video at the scene. people running towards the bus shelter. look at the top left corner of

the screen. slowing down the video so you can see a car plowing into that bus stop and people from a nearby market rushing in to help. what are you hearing there? >> well, it was a chaotic very -- i mean, it was a fluid situation here. you know, couldn't have happened at a worst time. this part of stockton street, the 800 block of stockton street is still closed and no word on when police will reopen it, and behind me you see the bus shelter and the car that's in it. as i said, it was a terrible scene here. lots of people shopping. lots of people going to restaurants and walking on the block and suddenly this terrible accident happened. >> he hit the pole and people were scattered every sfwhoor tom was one of many, many witnesses to this horrific accident on stockton street near clay in the thick of chinatown just near the height of the lunch hour.

12:45 in the hour. the gray toyota crashed into a bus shelter. somehow that vehicle veered and hit another. another vehicle and subsequently hit the muni structure. >> reporter: this man saw the whole thing. >> the car just rushed off. as fast as it hit the garbage can and there was a bus stop there so the car was at the bus stop >> reporter: car apparently side striped a parked mercedes and struck the white knee stan before plowing into the bus shelter. tom was right in its path. he was lucky he wasn't hit. >> i saw the car coming and i said that's it. end of my day, you know, and got lucky that he kept riding towards the pole. >> reporter: aaron peskin who represents chinatown happened to be nearby. in fact, he helped load one of the injured into an ambulance. >> many of them on the ground

and bleeding. there's blood all over the sidewa sidewalk, pretty horrific scene. >> reporter: nine people were injured two critically and police say five suffered moderate injuries. police were interviewing this person after it happened and a person who was seen getting in and out of the car which hit the bus shelter. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> and our team coverage continues with abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley live at san francisco general hospital. what can you tell us about the victims? >> all right which have a new word here there might be step injured. we are confirming that five of them were brought here to sf general by ambulance. four of them women and wan man and their range in sages from their 30s on up into their 80s. a spokesperson for zuckerberg sf general says four are in serious condition and one is still being

evaluated. the injuries are what you would expect after being struck by a vehicle multiple fractures and victims are being analyzed for internal injuries as well. . they are all in a lot of pain right now but the good news is their vital signs are good so it looks as though they are likely to survive this crash. four women and one man here in the hospital and of course we'll keep you updated on the condition in the afternoon news. reporting live, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> thank you, and we first told but this accident with a push alert from the abc 7 news app and can you get news updates as they happened. just download the abc news app and enable push alerts. >> flamed ripped through a wrecking yard reducing hundreds of cars to charred shells. abc 7 was in richmond moments after the fire started spewing as you can see thick black smoke that can be seen for hours and it prompted a shelter in place horde. abc 7 news reporter laura ant i?

there live with the late on the investigation with how this happened, laura? >> reporter: hi, dap. investigators still don't know exactly what caused the fire. it could be something as simple as all the rain water getting into a car battery. in the meantime thanks to the high winds today. the smoke dissipated really quickly and zshau all this fire fighting many foam behind me. the thick black smoke could be seen for miles and the flames were designed by hoses on the ladder trucks to consume them. >> woke up the whole neighborhood. and neighbors woke to loud popping sounds as the auto wrecking yard at the richmond parkway. >> paint and the gas tanks exploded and it's really shocking. >> reporter: big el challenge of the fire with this with the smoke and wind is the community actually because the vehicles, they are already, you know, dismantled obviously. this is a young yard.

>> the multi-agency response included crews from the nearby chevron refinery which supplied the foam that eventually put the flames. teams from contra costa county haz-mat and the u.s. environmental protection agency were all on scene to assess the aftermath including potential contaminants in the smoke. >> you get particulates in the smoke and products of combustion, dioxins and things that happened when the components in a vehicle and lots of modern vehicles can burn when they pre-douse these things. >> reporter: though not mandated by law officials first visited the deal auto wrecking yard in march, owner cited for two violations both abated by may. laura and the any, abc 7 news. >> an alert went out to residents downwind from the fire to shelter in place. residents as far as the northern el cerrito, and city officials

time, but no one was hurt. one of the hardest hit areas from the storm san anselmo, one of the hardest hit homes. a massive tree came down around 10:00. as you can see it, just crushed a car port and several cars as well. people nearby band together to help the family affected by the damage. >> we have much less concerns than our neighbor dozen right now and we'll make sure they are okay and will go to work. >> reporter: the marin county sheriff's office says the public safety dispatch area took 1,100 calls during yesterday's storm. aches 7 news was in flowment as penally crews worked to restore thousands of powers and we spotted this worker fixing a streetlight on peralta boulevard. there's currently no significant outages. overnight about 3200 customers across the bay area were in the dark. a well traveled blank between silicon valley and santa cruz county is partially closed right now. yesterday eats heavy rain caused

the asphalt to give way. look at the huge sinkhole. this is what locals call old san jose road. these slides are pretty common on the stretch of road and in the santa cruz mountains but they are dangerous. if the driver is not paying attention, their vehicle could easily plunge more than 300 feet down tomorrow socal creek below. part of this highway will be closed on monday after a large rock slide in that area. trees, mud and rocks fell on to the lanes south of wooden valley road. krnz says 121 will be closed between vichy avenue and wooden valley and suggest using highway 128 as an alternative. >> what a difference a day makes. live doppler 7 showing sunny skies across the bay area after

a big storm that has now departed the bay area. rainfall totals over the last 24 hours and notice the shift between the totals in the south and the totals in the north. san jose half han inch and palo alto under half an inch and napa 2.5 and kentfield 5 inches, over 4 at st. helena and now we're dealing with the big chill 24-hour temperature change shows it's 7 degrees cooler right now in "the new york post"a, half moon bay and 8 degrees cooler in mountianview and livermore. the biggest chill has yet to settle in. tomorrow morning we'll experience the coldest air of the season so far as many locations will see low temperatures in the 20s and low 30s. be sure to protect plants, pipes and pets because this is going to be really, really cold. i'll give you a look at the seven days ahead in a few minutes. dan and kristen? >> thanks, spencer. coming up at 4:00, housing sgleers those who fear they may be everdict following the ghost

some people livings in oakland fear evictions and red tagging of warehouses following the ghost ship fire tragedy and dozens of them gathered today for a community meeting with city officials and tennants rights groups. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> these people who are coming in purchasing land to make $3,000 condos is criminal. >> reporter: meeting hosted by attorney john burrel was met with residents who fear widespread evictions. >> we're not counting on the city. >> reporter: concern about evictions come after the ghost ship warehouse fire. 36 people were killed inside the artist live work space. >> the reaction from the city and property managers has been so swift. >> reporter: representatives from legal service groups includes a defense center all right. >> we don't have -- it's like

mountianview and 50 at half moon bay. it's a bit breezy on top of mt. tam and currently 54 degrees and 50 at novato and 54 at fairfield and concord at 53 and livermore at 51 is and view the from our rooftop cameras, blue skies over the bay and these are our rfrmt forecast features. colder mornings saturday through monday. bright, brisk and dry over the weekend and there's a slight risk of showers on thursday. a look at overnight lows. it's going to be really, real cold in our inland valleys. lows will drop into our upper 20s. we'll see low 30s right down to the freezing mark at livermore and perhaps down 31 and morgan hill and mainly upper 30s to about 40 right around the bay. we also have a freed warning in effect from overnight from midnight to 8:00 a.m. to virtually all inland areas of the bay area. we're talking about a dangerousry cold snap here with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s

in the darkness of night rescue cruise pulled a trapped man to safety and he was stuck on a cliff for hours overnight screaming for help. officials say he was 1 b 100 feet down in wet and windy conditions. here's what he had to say as first responders checked him out. >> absolutely. i mean, i'm sure he was happy. i was told that he might have been down there for a couple hours. >> he's not seriously hurt. rescuers say the man may have tried to climb down the cliff

when it got stuck. >> stormy women dangerous for two women in. almonte. they were stranded in a landmass in the middle of the san gabriel river. they were stranded when water levels rose quickly in the river and the deputies also rescued a dog and a litter of puppies stuck with the women. now parents might like this more than their children. there's an effort to toughen restrictions on young drivers in california. assemblyman jim fraser of oakly wants to require new drivers to hold a provisional license until age 2 is. the current age is 21. the bill would prevent teenagers from driving between 11:00 a.m. and the 5:00 p.m. where studies show they are twice as likely to be involved in a fatal crash. south san francisco is lowering the speed limit where the speed limit is 40. peloton city is throwing to 35. all other areas have a

e here are the stories making headlines at 4:30. a driver slammed into a bus stop in san francisco today. we'll show you that video. ten people were injured and two critically. it happened at stockton in sacramento during the lunch hour. reporter amy hollyfield took a picture of the foam used to put out a fire in richmond today t.burned more than 220 cars. there it is. it almost looked like snow out there. nobody was hurt. wand reporter wayne freedman reported the storm has passed but only for some of us following yesterday's heavy rain. wayne shows us the long road to recovery for some north bay residents who homes and cars are

karen travers, abc news, washington. well, oefrp seas evacuation efforts are on hold once again in war-torn east aleppo. trying to get the rebels out of the besieged area accused them of firing on convoys and not letting the wounded out of their towns. so far about 8,000 civilians have been evacuated. however, reporters say efforts to get much-needed supplies into that region from turkey are just not going well. >> we've also seen what felt like a never-ending row of relief vehicles. 18-wheeler trucks and flatbed trucks and filled to the brim with relief supplies and only a small trickle of those supplies is making it through across the syrian boarder. >> they have also reached a stalemate and draft resolution calling for independent monitors to oversee the evac still on hold after russian objections. moscow was concerned about the 11th time would take observers

into the weekend with round 2 of the arctic blast bringing cold air into the most of the country while here on the west coast california drives out as the door moves to the rockies and the midwest. lauren lyfter, abc news, los angeles. >> nearly 85% of the residents of corpus christi, texas, are still being told do not drink or touch the water, all because of a chemical leak from an asphalt plant on wednesday that contamenated the water in a city of 325,000 people. the city has worked quickly to folks as well as warning them boiling the tap water will not make it safe. >> right now it looks like 15% of the city has water that's still flowing. there's still a big issue out there. we've got a lot of warnings coming. >> city officials below a back flow incident at an industrial property called an asphalt emulls firing to be injected into the city's water system.

they believe that between 3 and 24 gallons of the chemical indolin a86 got into the system. >> uber has no plans to comply with state regulations on self-driving vehicles. california's dmv says the cars are illegal and should not be tested on san francisco street and mayor ed lee is demanding they remove them from the city. uber's vp of self-driving tech said the regulations don't apply because the vehicles are not autonomous and instead they require active human control like tesla's autopilot feature that's in all tesla vehicles. >> we have a person sitting in the driver's seat. they are the vehicle operator and there's a person next to them looking amount what the system is doing and trying to confirm that everything is going well and they have been able to override and take it on the vehicle all the time. >> video shows an uber

self-piloted vehicle running a red light in san francisco. uber said it was actually human error and the driver has been suspended. wrael, as you may know about france, labor strikes are fairly common there, but people are starting to take notice of a walkout by workers at the eiffel tower. a scheduled one-day strike has stretched into its fourth day due to disagreements with management over staffing and pay. a lot of tourists have found themselves caught right in the middle including these newlyweds from mexico. >> our photographer came all the way from mexico to make our pictures and they screwed up all of our plan right now. we need to look for new locations. >> 140 workers affected by the strike are also demanding more input into decision-making alternate iconic landmark. a group of "star wars" "star wars" fans is really, really committed. >> yeah. no question. what they endured that has claimed them the title of super "star wars" "star wars" fans.
