>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, december 18th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey carolyn, good morning to you. the cold air is firmlien trench. ed across the bay area and we are colder than yesterday morning. look at live doppler 7. it's clear. current temperatures, plenty of them in the 20s. 28 novato, santa rosa, livermore. san francisco and oakland a little warmer at this hour. it's freezing in morgan hill and danville with 31 in concord. so the freeze warning until 8:00 this morning for the interior valleys of the north bay, east bay and south bay. and the frost advisory right here from san francisco where it is just slightly warmer to the

bay shore. so throughout the early morning hours in oakland it will take some time to warm up. you see the temperatures there and a live look outside from sfo where the it is certainly cold. there won't be delays due to weather, but we will look for the temperatures to still stay in the 40s by noontime. we will talk about when we break this cold snap and a look into the holiday weekend coming up >> thank you, lisa. in sonoma county, both lanes of the road at fox hunt lane remain closed this morning. they have been shut down since about 10:30 last night. this after an acy road in northeast santa rosa may have caused a pickup truck to crash, knocking down a power pole and wires. pg&e is working to fix that pole. five customers are affected by the outage. they should have their power back on in the next half-hour. the county trucks that spread sand on the road about 1:00 this morning. no injuries have been reported. the chp estimate the lanes will

be closed to traffic until noon. as lisa said, some of us are waking up to freezing temperatures in parts of the bay area. some local residents made the best of the frigid temperatures last night, while others barely escaped the danger which winter-type weather can bring. alyssa harrington has the details. >> reporter: it was a frozen themed birthday party for alexia. fitting for temperatures in the 30s, which could dip to 29 degrees overnight. >> she's ten years old and it's freezing out here! >> these people embraced the chilly weather at the ice rink, listening to holiday music. >> it is cold! >> this one-year-old and her family just moved to the bay area from los angeles. >> we have about four layers on and we went and got our winter hats.

>> this tree toppled on a home. it knocked out power and put a hole through the living room. >> we heard a huge cracking noise. sounded like an earthquake. >> janet was inside with her daughter when the tree fell. they are okay but it crushed their car and badly damaged their home. the tree sits along the creek, which is not her property. she wants the city or the county the to take responsibility. >> they are very old, they are diseased. there's termites in them. you can hear them sway when it's windy. we've been worried about them falling on our house for a long time. >> people in the neighborhood have called the city to complain about the trees long before this happened. she's grateful they are all safe but she's worried it's only a matter of time until another one falls. alyssa harrington, abc7 news. >> in southern california today an arborist will check out a

tree that fell on to a wedding party, and killing a woman. they were paying picture when the tree came crashing down. it happened in a park in whittier which is east of l.a. a four-year-old girl is in critical condition with head injuries. the others have scrapes and bruises. witnesses heard a loud crack and then were shocked by what they saw. >> i could not even know where it was, and i looked. and then i see people walking and running and i see people screaming. i get out of the car and i go running, and i went to see and it was a lady with this little baby. >> experts say the tree may have been weakened by the drought, and the recent heavy rains caused it to fall. abc7 news has confirmed thursday's rain has caused a sewage overflow in oakland. abc7 news was at jack london square where signs are up

warning people to stay away from the bay. east bay mud is wait on tests that should come back later this week to make sure the water is safe. and east bay mud spokesperson said every time it rains, aging sewer pipes that are cracked, rain gets in. they are under a fed aral order to be replaced. a family is displaced after fire swept through their home early yesterday morning. investigators say it started in the garage. quickly reached the attic. and spanning across the duty-story house on bay park circle. a mother, a father, their two adult children woke up to smoke and escaped along with the dog. the daughter drove to the nearest entire station to get help. >> it was pretty chaotic trying to get a handle on it. the down-sloped houses are particularly dangerous to firefighters, but the destruction, yeah, it was

massive, especially on the back side. >> the family has been trying to salvage what they can from the home. they are staying with friends and family over the holidays. investigators say the fire was an accident. they have not yet identified the cause. daly city police are investigating that city's first murder of the year. it involved a case of domestic violence. investigators believe 23-year-old ariana hatami was killed by her boyfriend, fredrik tran, who is in jail this morning. sources tell abc7 news that the two have had a history of domestic violence, even before things went so tragically long yesterday morning. >> reporter: friends industry ariana hatami as a kind, sweet and lovely young lady, and they worried about her boyfriend, be fredrik tran, who goes by

freddie. they said he had slapped her before and then called police for a case of domestic violence. >> they believe it could be blunt force injuries to her upper body. >> police found her badly hurtin' side the apartment she shared with tran. medics rushed her to the hospital, where she died. tran was arrested on the spot. >> that is sad. yeah, i can't believe a guy would throw his life away like that. >> ariana hatami moved into the neighborhood two years ago when she start aid tending san francisco state. she also worked several part-time jobs. those who lived nearby can't believe what's happened. >> it's shocks because nothing like this happened. >> you don't know what goes on behind closed doors. you don't. that's someone's daughter, that's someone's son. friends. both were workers. >> tran was booked into the county jail and is being held without bail. abc7 news. a collision between a

vehicle and a pedestrian happened yesterday. it was canyon and blue heart drive in san ramon. about 7:45 last night. one man was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. a skateboard can be seen at the scene. so far investigators are not confirming if it's related to the accident. the driver did stay and cooperate with police. blitz are looking for a gunman who fired multiple shots on city streets last night. at least one car was hit but so far there are no reports of any injuries. it happened on curtis street and bancroft way, shell casings could be seen on the ground, as well as broken glass. police believe the car windows were shattered by the bull with let's. there was at least one other shooting last night at university avenue and bore street. happening today, an oakland church is putting on a four-hour news it cal event to honor

people who have died this year, including the victims of the ghost ship fire. some of the survivors of that warehouse fire two weeks ago will perform at chapel of the chimes. they plan to play music for their lost friends and band mates. parking is limited so people are encouraged to take public transportation or carpool. the free musical gathering begins at is 1:00 -- at 11:00 this morning. the ghost ship fire prompted a giveaway to members of the community. abc7 was in oakland yesterday as a group of local artists handed out 100 fire extinguishers and 100 smoke detectors. they made sure everyone knew how to use them. the artists want others to stay safe in their warehouse spaces. >> we really need to get through now is we are working as a group where we can get great things done rather than individual art spaces or artists or maker spaces hiding and trying to do their work on their own with

their own limited resources >> the mayor's office partnered with local fire protection company bay city to provide the equipment. the ghost ship building equipment in the building but there were no sprinklers or detechtors. last night a film was expected to bring 200 people to midsummer studios. the 3,000 square foot warehouse has hosted concerts and other events motorly without obtaining permits. as you know the oakland fire a that claimed 36 lives happened at an unpermitted music show. now many events without approval have been shut down. it's definitely cold outside. >> oh, burrr, yeah. 20s, 30s. it's frosty out there with

the past five days. in san francisco there was some healing holiday cheer. abc7 news was at st. francis memorial hospital for a burn survivor's party. all the children got presents from santa and mrs. claus, who arrived in a fire truck. the fire department has partnered with the hospital to reunite survivors with their caregivers. >> there's always posttraumatic stress. and the anxiety that comes with it. and actually being together with people who have had similar experience is very therapeutic and it's also therapeutic for my staff to see them heel ♪ jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way ♪ >> live music, casts and food were part of the festivities. in placer county a deputy

had to step in to stop a crime involving a couple of coyotes. sheriff's department posted this video showing the coyotes chasing a limping bear across highway. the bear ran off safely and another deputy went to find the bear to make sure it is okay. it's a winter wonderland in the high sierra. look at all this snow in yosemite national park. the national park service posted this picture of the med the area recorded 32icches of snow with the last storm. >> good morning. it's colder this morning and temperatures will drop further. sun doesn't come up until after 7 and numbers will probably drop right until then. live doppler right now. it's a clear morning. good visibility as we look

outside. with the clear sky, the light winds, optional radiational cooling, it's warmer in san francisco. the only place that's sooler. san jose 33, gilroy at 28. half moon bay at 37 degrees. and from sutro tower right now look at all the 20s. 28 santa rosa, livermore. and 29 in napa. concord at 31. so at 5:00 we can expect temperatures probably to come down another 2 degrees or so. any records perhaps around novato, san rafael. we have to get down well into the low 30s and mid-30s for oakland and gilroy to break any records but it's certainly cold out there. record or no record, 4 degrees colder in hayward, 10 degrees colder in napa and 6 degrees colder than it was in this hour yesterday. we will be looking for the coldest morning are the season with us right now and freeze

warnings and frost advisories taking us through 8:00 this morning. looks like we will be dry for the first day of hanukkah, the 24th and christmas day. beyond that, though, the last week of the year looks like we could see some more rain. as we check out the numbers the next couple he have hours, taking it until 8:00 in the morning, and we are still in the 30s. pretty cool out there. as we go through the 9:00, 10:00 hour just in the 40s. by noontime we see temperatures, most temperatures still in the mid-to upper 40s. so starting out colder, the temperatures lagging behind a bit, and with he will be slightly cooler in some spots today across the state. freezing in the sierra nevada. looking at just some low 50s in monterey. 64 in los angeles. that looks like the balmy spot in san diego, as well. just to give you an idea, the arctic cold front that blasted through the midwest yesterday, continues to press eastward. so it's going to be tough traveling here along the eastern seaboard.

and temperatures are going to plummet after today along the east coast. in oakland, temperatures dropping a bit before sunrise. 39. then notice the 40s as we get through the 11:00 hour. high today similar to yesterday in the low 40s. how about the lows? santa rosa below freezing, and by monday night into tuesday, just a little bit warmer. so highs around the bay fairly often form. around 50 at the coast. san francisco near 50. a lot like yesterday. accuweather seven-day forecast, another frigid morning this morning and frosty spots again tomorrow. looking at the milder air arriving tuesday. the first day of winter on wednesday. still have a slight chance of shower on thursday. mainly well north. and looking dry for friday into hanukkah and christmas eve. the last forecast model trended dry for the last week of the year. and now it looks like we will see more rain. >> that's good. >> yeah. >> but i wish it weren't so cold. >> i know. >> thanks, lisa.

temperatures drop even a, further hour by hour. as we get started this morning the freeze warnings still in effect and the frost advisory for the next two and a half hours. it is 28 degrees in livermore. 28 in santa rosa, novato. this is where we have freeze warnings and napa at 29. morgan hill 32 degrees, as well as fremont. now that is cold right by the bay there. 33 san mateo, san francisco and oakland. feel pretty balmy at 41 degrees. so a freeze warning continues for inland valleys. and we will see temperatures likely drop another couple of degrees. our frost advisory until 8:00 and we are certainly near freezing in some of those locations. but your forecast throughout the rest of the day calls for the cool weather to stick around. so 20s to 40s this morning. the sun is up at 7:20. highs once again low to mid-50s. we get some cloud cover in here, get a wind shift, and that

should allow for slightly modifying overnight lows. we will detail it for you coming up. >> thank you, lisa. yes, it's cold here, but winter weather back east is making for miserable conditions this weekend. slick roads across and major accidents, and killing at least 11 people. this is just the first blast of a nasty storm system. abc news reporter ariel has the story. >> millions of americans are in the frigid grip of a cold weather system sprawling from the midwest to the northeast. >> i'm prepared, i have all my gear on, a couple layers on. but snow, ice, freezing rain turned highways deadly. in baltimore a gas tanker truck overturned, and plunged off i-95 and burse. cell phone video capturing the moment it went sliding across the slick pavement, tipping over and exploding. it looked like an auto graveyard with 70 cars across the scene.

and in virginia 30 vehicles were caught in a chain reaction crash. at man's body was found near the scene of the crash, believed to be a victim. and i-40 as covered in snow and ice. about 40 vehicles involved in this crash. salt trucks did their best to keep the ace at bay but even roads that look safe can be treacherous, black ice making for some scary spinouts. many events were cancelled. but the bitter weather can't kill the holiday spirit. >> it's pretty cool that there's snow before christmas. >> temperatures are plummeting across the central u.s. as a blast of arctic air moves in. windchills expected to reach 30, even 40 degrees below zero in some places. ariel, abc news, new york. >> and venezuela, chaos and protests prompted the president

to postpone the elimination of some of that country's currency. yesterday there were fires, yelling, pushing and shoving from passionate demonstrators who are against the plan to take away the country's largest paper bill. the 100 note went out of circulation friday before new bills were available at banks and atms. 40% of vends waillans do not have bank accounts so they found themselves unable to pay for food, gas or christmas gifts. the president decided the bank note would temporarily be restored january 2nd. similar protests are going in in india where there's a plan to remove some of their currency from circulation by the end of this month. the surgeon who created the life saving heimlich maneuver died. dr. henry heimlich died yesterday at a hospital the in cincinnati. he was 96 years old. his son said heimlich suffered a

heart attack earlier in the week. heimlich was director of surgery at a jewish hospital in cincinnati back in 1974 when he devised the treatment for choking victims that made his name a household word. more than 2,000 people gathered yesterday at an ohio state university auditorium. they celebrated the life of john glenn. a former astronaut, fighter pilot and senator died last week at the age of 95 with. >> first-year doctors could soon be working 28 hours straight. a private group that oversees figures training has proposed those longer shifts. right now first-year residents are restricted to 16-hour

shifts. that restriction put in place five years ago because evidence showed exhausted doctors were putting patients and themselves in danger. one trial shows interns who worked more than 24 hours straight made 36% more serious medical errors. some surgeons say current limits than force residents to leave at critical times during a surgery, which they say is even more dangerous to patients. tesla wants to make sure some electric car drivers don't hog the network of charging stations. the palo alto company said anyone who leaves their car sitting at a super charger station after it's fully charged will have to pay 40 cents per minute to leave it parked there. a recharge is free to tesla owners. tesla's app will tell you when your car is about to be charged. elan musk said the so-called idle fee will be charged only if

all chargers at the station are full it can be hard to tell when elan musk is joking, especially when his wild ideas have helped transform the auto industry and space travel. while stuck in traffic in l.a. yesterday he made comments about tunneling through the earth. people aren't sure if he's serious or not. musk tweeted traffic is driving me nuts. i'm going to build a tunnel-boring machine and start digging. it will be called the boring company. it's what we do. i'm actually going to do this. he mentioned digging tunnels before. he said you could have layers of tunnels under cities to alleviate congestion. if you check his twitter profile, he now has tunnels, yes, tunnel the, listed in his description. in theory tunnels could reduce traffic and greenhouse emotion missions and could be good practice for burrowing on mars.

windshield before i took off. it took some time to really thaw out. so the coldest morning. the season is right now with freeze warnings and frost advisories for the next few hours. not sure if we are going to have that tonight because we will get a bit of a wind shift. wind coming straight out of the north. it should be more westerly in the days ahead. we will add cloud cover to it but we will stay dry through hanukkah and christmas. looks good to get out and get things done. oakland for today looking at temperature, they are right around 40 right any. it's going to stay that way. we won't bump up until about 9:00 and then by 1:00 there you go, 50 degrees. 52 should be the high. let's look at san francisco. for the week ahead. average highs 57. 53 today. but you will bump up right on through the middle of the week and then you will cover around the mid-50s as we go through the holiday weekend. lots of numbers to pass on. overnight lows near freezing,

another frosty one, but temperatures modifying and finally as we look at santa rosa you will be below freezing again. another night tonight. highs once again very uniform from the upper 40s to the low 50s. the accuweather seven-day forecast temperatures coming up maybe a couple degrees tomorrow. it's really not until tuesday and the first day of winter wednesday when we will see temperatures and feel like they are back to normal. maybe a passing shower in the northern mountains on thursday. if you are headed to the sierra nevada, no travel delays through the holiday weekend and that's a good thing because the week after that, last week of the year, looks like we could see some more rain and snow. >> and winter officially starts this week, right? >> it's been feeling like it, right? >> yes. >> thank you, lisa. the "star wars" universe has expanded with the release of "rogue one: a star wars story," a star wars story. jonathan bloom sat down with the director and the cast to talk

>> hang today, all sorts of hollywood characters will be taking over the streets of downtown san jose. thousands of runners and walkers dressed as santa or palace clause or other holiday favorites are expected to take part in the fifth annual santa run silicon valley. it is the christmas in the park tradition in san jose. the 5k run-walk starts at 3:00 at the intersection of santa clara street and the boulevard. a kids reindeer run to be the younger ones, ages 2 to 7, starts at 2:00 this afternoon. up next on abc7 mornings at 6:00, the chilly weather continues this morning throughout the bay area. a north bay road is shut down for hours. ice could be to blame.
