. >> a deep freeze in the bay area. many people are finding trost frost on their wind shields. >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, december 18th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> i was one of those scraping this morning. good morning, everyone. it's a balmy 46 in san francisco at the airport. that's the good news. but live doppler 7hd picking up on the lack of cloud cover, the radiational cooling. we are almost 20 degrees cooler. santa rosa, novato, napa, where numbers are in the upper 20s. its below freezing in concord, 33 mountain view, san jose, san mateo and los gatos 34. 27 in livermore. we are warmer in oakland. san francisco is not bad.

but look at the temperatures with the 24 hour change. a colder morning for sure for most. that's why we have the freeze warning in effect for the next two years in our inland communities. the frost advisory, as well, continues around san francisco, the bay shore through redwood city, san mateo, fremont and parts of the south bay. your forecast, it will deviate from yesterday and the fact it's colder this morning. by noontime we are still in the 40s this afternoon. we are below average and we will talk about the holiday coming up and the week leading up to it in a few minutes. >> all right. thank you, lisa. in sonoma county, both lanes of mark west spring road remain closed this morning. that's in santa rosa. they have been shut down since about 10:30 last night. this, after an icy road in northeast santa rosa may have caused a pickup truck to crash, knocking down a power pole and wires, pg&e is working to fix that pole.

five customers are affected by the outage. pg&e said their power won't be restored until about 9:00 this morning. trucks spread sand on the road around 1:00 this morning. no injuries were reported. chp estimates the lanes will be close today traffic until about noon. as lisa said, some of us are waking up to freezing temperatures in parts of the bay area. some local residents made the best of the frigid temperatures last night, while others barely escaped the danger which winter-type weather can bring. abc7 news reporter alyssa harrington has the details. >> reporter: it was a frozen themed birthday party for alexia. at walnut creek on ice. temperatures that could dip to 29 degrees overnight. >> she's ten years old and it's freezing out here! >> these people embraced the chilly weather at the ice rink,

listening to holiday music. >> it is cold! >> this one-year-old and her family just moved to the bay area from los angeles. >> we have about four layers on and we went and got our winter hats. >> in oakland, this family stood in the cold for hours after a 175-foot eucalyptus treetop he willed on their home. it knocked out power and put a hole in their living room. >> we heard a huge cracking noise. sounded like an earthquake. >> janet was inside with her daughter when the tree fell. they are okay but it crushed their car and badly damaged their home. the tree sits along the creek, which is not her property. she wants the city or the county to take responsibility. >> they are very old, they are diseased. there's termites in them. you can hear them sway when it's windy. we've been worried about them falling on our house for a long time. >> janet said people in the neighborhood have called the city to complain about the trees

long before this happened. she's grateful they are all safe but she's worried it's only a matter of time until another one falls. alyssa harrington, abc7 news. >> in southern california today an arborist will check out a sway tree that fell on to a woman at a wedding party and killing her. they were taking pictures when the tree came crashing down. it happened in a park in whittier which is east of l.a. a four-year-old girl is in critical condition with head injuries. the others have scrapes and bruises. witnesses heard a loud crack and then were shocked by what they saw. >> he saw the employees. i could not see what it was and then i look. then i looked. and then i see people walking and running and i see people screaming. i get out of the car and i go running, and i went to see and it was a lady with this little

baby. >> experts say the tree may have been weakened by the drought, and the recent heavy rains caused it to fall. abc7 news has confirmed thursday's rain has caused a sewage overflow in oakland. abc7 news was at jack london square where signs are up warning people to stay away from the bay. east bay mud is waiting on tests that should come back later this week to make sure the water is safe. and east bay mud spokesperson said every time it rains, aging sewer pipes that are cracked, allow the rainwater to get in, overwhelming the system. those pipes are under a federal order to be replaced. >> a south san francisco family is displaced after fire swept through their home early yesterday morning. investigators say it started in the garage. quickly reached the attic. and spanning across the

two-story house on bay park circle. a mother, a father, their two adult children woke up to smoke and escaped along with the dog. the daughter drove to the nearest fire station to get help. >> it was pretty chaotic trying to get a handle on it. the down-sloped houses are particularly dangerous to firefighters, but the destruction, yeah, it was massive, especially on the back side. >> the family has been trying to salvage what they can from the home. they are staying with friends and family over the holidays. investigators say the fire was an accident. they have not yet identified the cause. daly city police are investigating that city's first murder of the year. it involves a case of domestic violence. investigators believe 23-year-old ariana hatami was killed by her boyfriend, fredrik tran, who is in jail this morning. sources tell abc7 news that the two have had a history of domestic violence, even before things went so tragically long

yesterday morning. >> reporter: friends describe ariana hatami as a kind, sweet and lovely young lady, and they worried about her boyfriend, fredrik tran, who goes by freddie. they said he had slapped her before and then called police for a case of domestic violence. >> they appear that they could possibly be blunt-force injuries to her upper body. >> police found her badly hurtin' side the apartment she shared with tran. medics rushed her to the sf general, where she died. police arrested tran on the spot. >> that is sad. yeah, i can't believe a guy would throw his life away like that. >> ariana hatami moved into the daly city neighborhood two years ago when she started attending san francisco state. she also worked several part-time jobs. those who lived nearby can't believe what's happened. >> it's shocking because nothing

like this ever happens. >> you don't know what goes on behind closed doors. you don't. that's someone's daughter, that's someone's son. friends. both were workers. >> tran was booked into the san mateo county jail and is being held without bail. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian happened yesterday. it happened in san ramon about 7:45 last night. one man was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. you see a skateboard there at the scene. so far investigators are not confirming if it's related to the accident. the driver did stay and cooperate with police. >> berkeley police are lacking for a gunman who fired multiple shots on city streets last night. at least one car was hit but so far there are no reports of any injuries. it happened on curtis street and

bancroft way. shell casings could be seen on the ground, as well as broken glass. police believe the car windows bullets. there was at least one other shooting last night at university avenue and bore street. happening today, an oakland church is putting on a four-hour musical event to honor people who have died this year, including the victims of the warehouse fire. some of the survivors of that warehouse fire two weeks ago will perform at chapel of the chimes. they plan to play music for their lost friends and band mates. parking is limited so people are encouraged to take public transportation or carpool. the free musical gathering begins at 11:00 this morning. the ghost ship warehouse fire prompted a giveaway to members of the community. abc7 was in oakland yesterday as a group of local artists handed out 100 fire extinguishers and

120 smoke detectors. they made sure everyone knew how to use them. the artists want others to stay safe in their warehouse spaces. >> we really need to get through now is we are working as a group where we can get great things done rather than individual art spaces or artists or maker spaces hiding and trying to do their work on their own with their own limited resources >> the mayor's office partnered with local fire protection company bay city fire protector to provide the equipment. the ghost ship building had fire equipment in the building but there were no sprinklers or detectors. last night a film was expected to bring 200 people to midsummer studios. the 3,000 square foot warehouse has long hosted fundraisers, camps and concerts, mostly without obtaining city permits. as you know, the oakland fire

>> the two surviving sisters of the rose pac have finally settled their dispute and her estate three months after rose pac's death. the agreement allows for her remains to be cremated within a week. the sisters have been arguing over who should be the administrator of pac's estate, worth about $650,000. she died at her home in chinatown back in september. pac's body has been stored at green street mortuary since her funeral. donald trump is taking on

you can watch it on "this week" with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 this morning right here on abc7. if you or someone you know still need to sign up for healthcare, you will be happy to hear the state has extended the deadline to sign up for covered california. last thursday was the original deadline to enroll if you wanted to be covered on january 1st. but because of the last-minute rush to get coverage, insurance officials decided to move the deadline first to yesterday, and then again to tomorrow. more than 67,000 people have signed up for coverage in just the past five days. the exchange's open enrollment doesn't close until january 31st. in san francisco there was some healing holiday cheer. abc7 news was at st. francis memorial hospital for a burn survivor's party. all the children got presents from santa and mrs. claus, who arrived in a fire truck.

cover and no wind. radiationalcology and it's optimal. here are the coldest temperatures this morning. freeze warning in this area of the east bay with walnut creek at 31. 29 danville. and lafayette. 28 pleasanton. dublin. and the rest of the bay area chilling out in the upper 20s. novato, santa rosa, napa. 34 los gatos. right above freezing mountain view and san jose will likely see numbers come down another degree or two. we are holding in the 40s. it's 46 at sfo, 40 in oakland. so much colder this morning. that's due to that cold air mass already in place. highs yesterday just managed upper 40s, low 50s and that's why we have easily bottomed out, slightly cooler this morning. widespread 20s and 30s. hopefully you have brought in the pets and covered the plants, otherwise it's see ya later for

some of the plants because with this temperature, so-called, really things will just get killed off. we are looking at numbers this morning, and very chilly tomorrow. should see numbers maybe a little warmer. not quite sure if the national weather service will bring us another warning or advisory, but this lasts until 8:00. there will be frosty spots for sure monday morning. we are looking dry through the holiday week. maybe a passing shower far north bay on thursday. so regulates show you how and when we are going to modify. this is today with highs very similar to yesterday. we should see numbers 5 degrees warmer than this. so we are getting used to the chill because tomorrow numbers not much warmer. a couple degrees warmer. still off of the averages. but at 54 in oakland, you still need the heavy coat out there. but by tuesday we will see numbers near average. mid-and upper 50s, maybe a 60-degree reading. and we are going to stay pretty quiet throughout the week ahead. numbers across the nation have

been anywhere from 20 to 35 degrees below average. this is not normal for fargo and dallas and st. louis. these are the highs today. 9 in chicago and the frosty temperatures are sliding to the east. so the entire nation encompassed in a really cold scenario. this modifies in the next couple of days. this will be the coldest air getting into monday. 48 degrees today in yosemite with 50 in sacramento. sunny skies from north to south. and in san jose tonight another freezing night and then you are back up into the 40s. highs low 50s for most. the accuweather seven-day forecast looking at another frosty night font. told day tomorrow. milder come tuesday. the first day of winter wednesday. maybe a few sprinkles on thursday. then it looks sunny throughout the afternoon and cold mornings for hanukkah and into christmas. >> people have time to get out there and do their thing because can't blame it on the rain.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, carolyn. good morning. let's start in the south bay where temperatures are awfully cold everywhere. 33 in san jose, it's 30 in campbell. los gatos at 32 and right around the water mill, 36 degrees. the rest of the bay area in the 20s in novato, 29 lafayette, danville. 31 newark. the 30s you see closer to the bay. san carlos at the airport there in the mid-40s. so the freeze warning for another hour and a half for the interior valleys of the north bay, east bay, south bay and the frost warning for the peninsula. and portions of the south bay. the bay shore there with low 30s. the forecast certainly verifying for very cold temperatures. by noontime we are still in the 40s. we will thaw out.

hopefully tonight not as cold but it will certainly be frost thety. we look for the modifying afternoon temperatures in the days ahead. whether or not we see rain, you will want to stay tuned. >> thank you, lisa. yes, it's cold here, but winter weather back east is making for really miserable conditions this weekend. slick roads across the country and major accidents, killing at least 11 people. this is just the first blast of a nasty storm system. abc news reporter erielle has the story. >> reporter: millions of americans are in the frigid grip of a cold weather system sprawling from the midwest to the northeast. >> i'm prepared, i have all my gear on, a couple layers on. >> reporter: but snow, ice, freezing rain turned highways deadly. in baltimore a gas tanker truck overturned, and plunged off i-95

and burst into flames. cell phone video capturing the moment it went sliding across the slick pavement, tipping over and exploding. it looked like an auto graveyard with 70 cars across the scene. and in fairfax, virginia 30 vehicles were caught in a chain reaction crash. a man's body was found near the scene of the crash, believed to be a victim. in new mexico, another multi-car pileup. and i-40 as covered in snow and ice. about 40 vehicles involved in this crash. salt trucks did their best to keep the ice at bay, but even roads that look safe can be treacherous, black ice making for some scary spinouts. air travelers found themselves grounded by the wicked weather, with thousands of flights delayed or cancelled. but the bitter weather can't kill the holiday spirit. >> it's pretty cool that there's snow before christmas. >> temperatures are plummeting across the central u.s. as a blast of arctic air moves in. windchills expected to reach 30, even 40 degrees below zero in some places. erielle, abc news, new york.

in venezuela, chaos and protests prompted the president to postpone the elimination of some of that country's currency. yesterday there were fires, yelling, pushing and shoving from passionate demonstrators who are against the plan to take away the country's largest paper bill. the 100 note went out of circulation friday before new larger bills were available at banks and atms. 40% of the country's people do not have bank accounts, so they found themselves unable to buy food, gas or christmas gifts. the president decided the bank note would temporarily be restored until january 2nd. similar protests are going in in india where there's a plan to remove some of their currency from circulation by the end of

this month. the surgeon who created the life saving heimlich maneuver died. dr. henry heimlich died yesterday at a hospital in cincinnati. he was 96 years old. his son said heimlich suffered a heart attack earlier in the week. heimlich was director of surgery at a jewish hospital in cincinnati back in 1974 when he devised the treatment for choking victims that made his name a household word. more than 2,000 people gathered yesterday at an ohio state university auditorium. they celebrated the life of john glenn. john glenn, a former astronaut, fighter pilot the and senator died last week at the age of 95. joe biden was at the memorial. >> first-year doctors could soon be working 28 hours straight. a private group that oversees

physician training has proposed those longer shifts. right now first-year residents are restricted to 16-hour shifts. that restriction put in place five years ago because evidence showed exhausted doctors were putting patients and themselves in danger. one trial shows interns who worked more than 24 hours straight made 36% more serious medical errors. some surgeons say current limits can force residents to leave at critical times during a surgery, which they say is even more dangerous to patients. >> a rescue attempt in upstate new york was not what it seemed. someone called police saying an elderly woman appeared frozen to death inside a car. officers could not get the woman to respond, so they smashed the window. that's when they discovered it's not a woman, it ends up it's an extremely realistic life-size mannequin that the car's owner used for his job in medical equipment sales.

tesla wants to make sure some electric car drivers don't hog the network of charging stations. the palo alto company said anyone who leaves their car sitting at a super charger station after it's fully charged will have to pay 40 cents per minute to leave it parked there. a recharge is free to tesla owners. tesla's app will tell you when your car is about to be charged. tesla's ceo, elan musk said the so-called idle fee will be charged only if all chargers at the station are full. it can be hard to tell when elan musk is joking, especially when his wild ideas have helped transformed the auto industry and space travel. while stuck in traffic in l.a. yesterday he made comments about tunneling through the earth. people aren't sure if he's serious or not. musk tweeted traffic is driving me nuts. i'm going to build a tunnel-boring machine and start digging.

it shall be called the boring company. it's what we do. i'm actually going to do this. he mentioned digging tunnels before. he said you could have layers of tunnels under cities to alleviate congestion. if you check his twitter profile, he now has tunnels, yes, tunnel the, listed in his description. in theory tunnels could reduce traffic and greenhouse emissions and could be good practice for burrowing on mars. still ahead, a star wars fan turned movie director is living his dream. we hear from the creative forces behind the new film "rogue one." here's a live look from our abc7 mt. tam cam. baby, it is cold out there! lisa will be along shortly with the full accuweather forecast.
