alan thicke's death, the aorta the main artery from the heart tore and then ruptured. he had complained of chest pains while playing hockey with his son last week. he was 69 years old. those are some of the top stories we're following on this thursday, december 22nd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with europe on the lookout as germany identifies a suspect in the berlin truck attack. >> first of all, a live look at the christmas market that was attacked. it was the center of the carnage. it is reopening this morning as the urgent man hunt continues for a 24-year-old man from the north african nation of tunisia. about's molly hunter joins us live on the phone from berlin. molly, looking at the market there, what's the status on the man hunt? >> caller: good morning, kendis. it's of course thursday. this happened monday night.

anis amri and any other suspects now have more than a 48 hour head start. now, law officials say at least anis amri is armed and dangerous, and they have no idea, and they have not said whether he's still in the city, whether he's still in the country, or even still in europe. now officials and counterterrorism officials across europe are, obviously, working together exchanging information, but at this point, he could be anywhere. >> and, molly, tell us a little bit more about the suspect. he was known to authorities, but they stopped surveillance of him. why? >> caller: that's right, mara. apparently, he was under covert surveillance march to september of this year after a tip was given that he may actually be planning some kind of burglary, some kind of criminal break-in to finance buying automatic weapons for an attack. but what the covert surveillance found was a couple drug deals, criminal activity, and a bar brawl, but nothing that would suggest terrorism, so they stopped surveillance in september.

now, we dee know also from the prosecutors that the latest information exchanged about him between counterter rofism officials most recently in november. he was certainly even after the surveillance stopped, he was on the radar more recently, and police had launched proceedings against this man to bring a criminal case, but, mara, this is shocking. certainly, germany would not be alone in letting someone slip through the cracks like this. they just don't have the manpower and resources. we saw this in brussels as well and paris as well as some of those suspects and attackers were on the radar, but they didn't have the resources to continue to follow the people and follow through. >> so many people they do have to follow. there was a photo that came out the last couple days from a far right leader in germany, angela merkel, provocative, with blood on her hands, and there's people i assume there in berlin and elsewhere in germany blaming angela merkel. >> cleto: that's exactly right,

kendis. the far right in germany, whether it's the afc party, the neo-nazi, the extreme right, is hammering her for. she championed a policy to allow over a million in in the last year, and they said she has blood on her hands. these are her deaths. she'll take a political hit. we saw it play out last night. there was a rally right near the site of the terrorist attack. we had neo-nazis on one side shouting hate slogans that no one should be allowed into germany. and we had refugee supporters on the other side saying they are welcome here. they are clearly nervous this will be politically exploited. this is one asylum seeker will now define all of the refugees in the country. we certainly are looking at really interesting political days ahead and dark days in the country for merkel. >> interesting political days indeed as there's an election, re-election coming up next year. molly hunter with us by phone, from berlin this morning. molly, our thanks. turning back to this country now. federal and local law enforcement authorities have

issued an urgent bulletin amid growing concern that a similar attack could happen right here on u.s. soil. the alert warns that times square could be targeted during the annual new year's eve celebration as a million people gather to watch the ball drop. there's no specific threat, but they are specially worried about lone wolf attacks. donald trump call the deadly berlin rampage an attack on humanity. >> when asked if the attack had caused him to reevaluate his plan on muslim immigration, trump said he was 100% correct. it's not clear where trump stands now on that. he had initially called for a ban on muslims entering the country and later adjusted that pledge to focus on stopping immigration from countries with ties to terrorism. trump held meetings at his florida estate with heads of boeing and lockheed martin to bring down costs. trump criticized both companies with lucrative government contracts for charging too much. boeing is set to build two new air force 1 planes. >> we're going to get it done

online auction to have coffee with his sister ivanka. to mexico, the death toll rising following an explosion. at a fireworks market. some of the youngest victims have been flown to a specialized hospital in texas for treatment. three of the children burned, more than 70% of their bodies. investigators are searching for what might have set off the deadly chain reaction. fusion network reporter rafa fernandez has more on the search for clues. >> reporter: the office is still investigating there. they are being careful not to rush to conclusions, but reports indicate there might have been a nexus of fireworks in the area or just even illegal fireworks that don't comply with safety norms established by mexican law. right now it could be anything from, you know, a short circuit to the heat in the area to someone lighting a cigarette by accident. >> only days ago mexican officials said the market has

been the safest in latin america. moving on now. police officers tell you the most dangerous part of their job is the domestic violent call. earlier this month, two georgia police officers were killed earlier this month after responding to one of those. >> newly released body cam video of one of the cops gives us new insight. abc's gio benitez has that story. >> reporter: the body camera video of a georgia police officer's final moments. nicholas and his partner smith were responding to a domestic violence call earlier this month. you can see the suspect right there down the hall, but he runs off and the officers immediately give chase. as the two officers close in, the suspect pulls out a gun and opens fire, both severely wounded. officer smar tried saving his partner and best friend with cpr until his own last breath. smith dying later at the hospital.

>> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now". we do say good morning to you, everybody, on this thursday, december 22nd. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm mara schiavocampo in for diane macedo. we begin with the international man hunt in the berlin attack. >> looking for the 24-year-old, anis amri is his name, has been on the radar for months, suspected of having ties to islamic extremists. abc's matt gutman is in berlin where the christmas market that was targeted has been scrubbed clean and is set to reopen today. >> reporter: a euro wide dragnet for this man, anis amri tunisia. warning he could be armed and dangerous. according to a german lawmaker, his wallet and id found in the cab of the battered semitruck

after he bulldozed through a crowded berlin christmas market, crushing stalls, killing 11, and injuring dozens more. he was long on the radar of german terror officials. the a.p obtaining this alert going out to international police noting he has used six aliases in three countries. he came to germany in 2015 seeking asylum, but it was denied. officials concerned about his ties to radical islamists and allegations of petty crime. germany then tried to deport him, but he didn't have the paperwork to prove he was tunisian, and so he stayed. according to the a.p., german authorities had him under surveillance until september after getting a tip he was trying to obtain weapons for an attack. police searching this home for refugees where he is believed to have stayed. police aren't saying he drove the truck into the market. that semi believed to be hijacked just hours before the attack as its driver was hauling steel beams from italy to

germany. that driver seen on the surveillance camera in a diner after calling his wife. his dead body found in the truck but no gun found at the scene. the attack challenging merkel for her decision to allow in a million migrants. protected by cordings of police in riot gear, members of germany's far right gathered near the site of the attack. the voice behind me is from a neonazi group, and past this line of dozens of officers keeping the peace, there's a pro-immigration rally that's far larger. in other parts of berlin, a different response to the tragedy, the city's famed christmas markets open once again. crates replacing concrete barriers at the alexander's place market. protection should the unthinkable happen again. intelligence officials say they were conducting surveillance on amri for months, but called it off in september. said they last spoke about him in november. and after that, silence.

not to rush to conclusions. i think it's going to be very hard for top mexican officials to take the fault for this. likely they'll blame it on one of the stands in the market. >> and rafa, some of the victims are being treated here in the u.s. what can you tell u.s. about that? >> caller: well, yes, the first victim arrived today at the shriner's hospital in texas, known throughout the u.s. for burn care and treatment units. and there's three kids, which the governor of the state of mexico said they got 70% of bodies burned, so they are being transferred to the u.s. for special treatment. mexican authorities are hoping the hospitals in the u.s. can accept more. there's reports that there's ten kids overall, maybe more among the 70-plus victims of this incident, so, you know, the first of the victims of the children arrived today, and the hospital might receive up to five or eight according to preliminary reports by mexican authorities. >> quite a few victims there. a lot of people suffering as a result of this. a lot of people also wondering,

this was a popular market, the biggest fireworks market in all of mexico. is there any talk at all of rebuilding at the same spot? >> caller: well, i mean, that's a good question because the market has already been rebuilt in 2005. in 2005, there was another explosion and 57 people were injured, over 70 cars were literally calcimated by the fire and the market got rebuilt again so that people could go back to this industry that's so big in december selling fireworks. i doubt it. i doubt if this time the market will be rebuilt again just because of the -- of how deadly this was. the death toll keeps rising. right now, it's at 32. some people are dying in hospitals, so i think the death toll is still going to increase. i really think this shocked mexico and locals, and it's just, you know, the images on

we turn to the urgent search across europe. police desperately trying to track down a suspect linked to the horrific truck attack in berlin. >> looking for this man, amri ansi, a 24-year-old of tunisia believed to be armed and violent, he arrived in germany last year seeking asylum, but it was denied. officials were concerned about possible ties to islamic extremist. >> amri was under surveillance for months suspected of try to obtain weapons for an attack, an alert obtained by the ap, he used six aliases in three countries. german chancellor angela merkel is facing growing criticism for allowing nearly a million migrants to enter the country. >> here in this country, donald trump condemned the attacks, and suggested he might be going forward with the muslim ban that he proposed during the campaign. >> caused you to reevaluate plans to create a muslim ban in the united states? >> you know my plans all along. proven to be right, 100% correct. what's happening is disgraceful. it's an attack on humanity.

presence in the event. this year, authorities warn there's no specific threats, but they, quote, remain concerned about unaffiliated lone offenders and violent extremists targeting the event, writing they are concerned due to, quote, their ability to remain undetected until operational and willingness to attack civilians and soft targets and exploit increased crowd density to perpetrate a mass casualty event. the bulletin goes on to site the attacks in san bernardino, orlando and nice. it's estimated a million people crowd into this area, times square, a week from now to watch the ball drop. linsey davis, abc news, new york. authorities in mexico say the death toll from that fireworks explosion has risen to at least 33 and it could go higher. distraught relatives gather at the site hoping for news about their loved ones. investigators say lax safety standards may have allowed vendors to display explosives outside the stalls leading to a

deadly chain reaction. new controversy surrounding north carolina's so-called bathroom law. lawmakers were widely expected to repeal the law in the special session. that did not happen. now there's plenty of finger pointing. here's abc's richard cantu. >> the legislature had the chance to do the right thing for north carolina, and they failed. >> reporter: the special session is over, but north carolina's bathroom bill still stands. >> i don't know if you think the public is stupid or we're stupid or who is stupid, but it just does not make sense. passing antidiscrimination laws for six months. the so-called bathroom bill says people can only use the bathroom in public and government buildings that matches the sex listed on the birth certificate. opponents call it discrimination against lgbt people, and supporters say it's about safety. >> we don't have a discrimination problem in the state. >> people just want to use the bathroom they are comfortable with. >> reporter: hb2 cost north carolina big business. paypal pulled jobs from charlotte. the nba moved the all-star game to louisiana, and numerous musicians cancelled concerts there. >> the public consciousness outside the state holds us accountable. >> reporter: it was seen as a way for the state to reclaim its reputation, but ultimately, no compromise, no repeal. richard cantu, abc news, new york. turning now to a new health alert about melanoma. researchers say the deadly skin cancer is killing more americans than ever before. more than 10,000 americans are expected to die from it this year. that's up from the more than 8,000 deaths in 2009. melanoma accounts for 1% of skin cancers but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths. china may get relief from the so-called airpocalypse.

forecasters say nighttime winds will push out the severe pollution that is smothering nearly half a billion people. schools closed, highways shut down and factories and flights cancelled due to improve air quality. officials are investigating whether local government took the right steps to address the crisis. the 11 newest members of the charleston, west virginia police department are a little older than most recruits, and you won't see the grandma units kicking out doors or arresting suspects. >> their mission is to spread love and hugs. all of them have been victims of elder abuse or domestic violence, so they know that everyone needs a lift now and then. >> sometimes i'm not feeling good or i'm feeling low, and somebody gives me a hug, and i'll feel better, and i share my hug with someone else.
