combat. i'm ama daetz in for kristen sze. >> a man stabbed a would-be robber to death at 144th avenue. elissa harrington has the latest on the story. elissa? >> reporter: dan, both the suspect and victim were stabbed in this violent robbery attempt. police say a man in his 30s was trying to protect his own life when he grabbed his attacker's knife and fought back. they are not releasing any names but we know that the victim is recovering at the hospital in a serious condition. san leandro police say it appears the victim of an attempted robbery killed his attacker by fighting back. >> it appears to be a justifiable homicide. >> reporter: lieutenant ron clark says the victim wrestled away the knife of the suspect and stabbed him to death. this happened near heath park. a neighbor who did not want her face on camera heard screaming

and called 911. >> because he was like, help me, help, i'm going to die. help me, help me. i heard two guys fighting. and that's when they came and one guy was like on the floor and the other guy was -- they were telling him to put the knife down. >> reporter: this all started around 12:45 a.m. police say the 22-year-old suspect was hiding, looking for someone to rob when a man walked by talking on his cell phone. the suspect approached him, demanded his phone and wallet and stabbed him multiple times. the victim tossed his wallet and ran but quickly realized he was being chased. >> so the suspect catches up to the victim, the victim turns and in some sort of a fight manages to take away the knife and stabs the suspect in self-defense, we believe. >> reporter: both men were taken to the hospital. only the victim survived. the alameda crime lab processed the scene. both the victim and suspect lived in the area but did not know each other. this case will now be handed over to the district attorney's

office. elissa harrington, abc7 news. the morgan hill man accused of attacking his neighbor with a baseball bat is charged with premeditated attempted murder. 47-year-old mark webber turned himself into the police last night. weber had two confrontations with his next door neighbor on december 9th. it all may have started with a dispute over a dog. the victim was taken to the hospital with major injuries. weber faces life in prison if convicted. concord police say felony sexual assault-related charges have been filed against a 15-year-old student in de lasalle. he was kept in custody while the investigation continued. a woman who plunged off the highway guided rescuers to rescue her. she was stuck after her car plunged 75 feet into a wooded

area. she led the firefighters north of black road by honking the horn and talking on the phone. they found her nearly nine miles away from where she said she was. the vehicle was wedged between trees and she just could not get out. the driver was eventually turned over to the chp on suspicion of driving under the influence but she's okay. san mateo sheriff deputies have arrested 64-year-old man of san ma te'o for a deadly hit and rund. the victim is a 32-year-old chicago resident crossing the road at 9:00 p.m. when an suv hit and killed him. woo faces felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges. police in san leandro are looking for the people who drove a jaguar connected to a store called thrift town. there's glass and damage everywhere. employees told us it's not the first time a car has ran into the office. they say the intersection of

162nd avenue at 14th street is dangerous. despite the damage, the store was opened today. passengers on a jetblue flight arrived an hour later at sfo from new york this afternoon and it wasn't because of the weather. a family was kicked off a plane after a man confronted president-elect trump's daughter ivanka. sergio quintana has the story. sergio? >> reporter: that confrontation happened just before the flight left new york and what's interesting is that trump and her whole entourage were sitting in coach on jetblue when they arrived here at sfo they got a little bit more of a v.i.p. treatment. jetblue flight 415 approached the terminal but before the passengers could deplane, ivanka trump and her entourage met the secret service detail awaiting on the tarmac. >> if i was security, i wouldn't take the chance either but he didn't yell.

it wasn't a screaming fight. none of that happened. >> she was calm. she was trying to distract her kids and she was really calm. >> reporter: according to the trump transition team, her husband and jared kushner and their children are headed to hawaii for a holiday getaway. they were approached by a man holding a child. his husband tweeted about the confrontation saying, "jetblue kicked us off our flight when a flight attendant overheard my husband expressing displeasure about flying with trumps." he has since deleted his twitter account. and then jetblue said, "if the crew determines that a customer is causing conflict, the customer will be asked to deplane especially if the crew feels the situation runs the risk of escalation on the flight." this isn't the first time that the trump family has elicited reaction on a plane. last month, a trump supporter made fun of hillary clinton supporters after the election as a delta flight from pennsylvania was about to depart. he was not removed from that plane but has since been banned

from any future delta flights. as for the two men kicked off the jetblue plane this morning, the airline says it made arrangements to put them on the next available flight to san francisco. at sfo, sergio quintana, abc7 news. our meteorologist drew tuma is here to give us our forecast. >> there is massive cloud cover off shore. that's our next storm system and it will be a moderate storm. on a storm impact scale, it's a 2. moderate to heavy morning rain, wind gusts 20 to 40 miles per hour and a chance of thunder and even small hail. the morning commute, if you have to go to work tomorrow morning, is going to be a slow go. it will be windy with the wind gusts going 20 to 40 miles per hour. going hour by hour, we show you the rain moving through and also a significant snowstorm brewing in the sierra. all of that in the forecast

coming up. >> thank you, drew. see you shortly. a fire forces people out of san jose. ten people lived in a one-story house. four people were visiting. three dogs survived but one died in the fire. firefighters took about half an hour to bring the flames under control. and then went beyond the call of duty really to make sure the family had something to celebrate. >> the firefighters that were here this morning pulled a lot of christmas presents out of the house because they have protective gear, they could go back in. so they saved some of the presents. how many, i don't know. but they did save some of the presents. >> the cause is still under investigation. the family told firefighters there may have been an electrical problem. flames also swept through a santa rosa warehouse last night causing heavy damage. firefighters arrived soon after 8:00 p.m. to find smoke pouring out of the back of the north bay service restaurant warehouse at west 9th street. santa rosa fire department posted this video. the business pumps out grease traps across the region. the fire appears to have started

in a pile of rags used to maintain the equipment. code complaints are spiking in the city of oakland nearly three weeks after the fire at the ghost ship warehouse that killed over 30 people. the city received 21 code enforcement complaints about people living in illegal or unpermitted spaces compared with just two complaints in the two weeks before the deadly fire. it's not just live/work space coming under increased scrutiny. omnicommons, which you're seeing here are reporting surprise inspections from officials and the department has changed its wording about inspections and deleted calling for annual inspections and say when inspections occur, they should take place approximately every two years. uber has moved its self-driving car pilot program to arizona and the governor of the grand canyon state is

well, the silicon valley is hungry with a workforce for solid computer science and as a result, the college board reported in 2016, fewer than 1% of high school students in the state took the a.p. computer science exam. education reporter lyanne melendez talks about the disparity. >> reporter: filling positions in computer science or pogramming isn't happening fast enough in california. proof of that is the incredibly low percentage of high school students who took the a.p. exam in schools. >> less than 1% of all high school students took the computer science exam and for students from underrepresented backgrounds, it was a lot lower than we would have expected. >> reporter: the kapor center wants to bring more technology to students of color and yet

found 65% of students in california had no access to computer science courses. as a result, according to the college board, today just over 4800 high schools nationwide offer a.p. computer science. more schools have a.p. english literature, even a.p. psychology is more popular. jeremy is with code hs, training thousands of teachers nationwide. >> i think a big part is the exposure to computer science classes. if you can take a course in middle school or an intro course in high school, you've built up a lot more interest. >> that's why san francisco unified decided to start engaging students earlier. in the spring, ten 11 schools will participate in the pilot program in computer science. this is what silicon valley companies told the district two years ago. >> we had to make it a new basic skill and start at a very young

age and give it and make it available to every student. >> reporter: the goal is to make computer science a regular subject, just like math or science. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. two bay area schools have been awarded grants. one school received $381,000 and another $393,000. the grants will help explore the pay for success feasibility study in which taxpayer funds are only spent at the government's concrete measurable outcomes aren't achieved. u.s. park police were concerned when they found an abandoned van on ocean beach along the great highway in san francisco this morning. they found the driver on the roof of a nearby preschool. san francisco police tracked him down after a break-in was

reported. the man was out on a felony no bail warrant, it turns out. officers realized he was the same guy who left the van on the beach and was violating his probation. they took him into custody. well, volunteers at the hunger program in east palo alto have been giving out food and toys to families in need as we approach christmas. they say they won't turn anyone away. smelly woodrow was there as one woman says her christmas was made. >> reporter: lydia rodriguez can't help but wave at the camera. she says she was happy. >> the goodies. >> reporter: she's picking up food for her seven children. six boys and one girl. >> very busy, yes. very, very busy. >> reporter: the hunger program has been feeding families in need during the holidays for decades. >> it means a lot to the community. there are a lot of people struggling with housing and some

woodrow, abc7 news. all of the rain and wet soil continues to cause problems forestries. crews chopped up a huge tree and it fell on the bridge above san anselmo creek. the road had to be closed but reopened this afternoon. not all dead trees are going into the wood chipper. these two were chopped down for good reason. they died and were in risk of falling. they went into a creek at the samuel p. taylor park. the logs will create deep pools in the creek keeping the temperature cool and allowing fish to spawn. well, it's been a long and productive year for a robot from the monterey aquarium research equipment. the rover just broke a world record for the longest seafloor

the cool spot checking in at 49 degrees. out on the town later on tonight, no weather issues. it's not too chilly. we stay dry at least through the midnight hours. a mixture of stars and clouds and temperatures slowly falling mainly into the upper 40s. you look at overnight tonight, the temperatures, yeah, we're holding in the 40s but you can see the bright colors and it's indicating downpours will be arriving in the early morning hours on friday. so the storm impact scale, bring it on back tomorrow, it's a 2. it packs a little bit of a punch, especially in the morning. moderate to heavy rain, first thing on your friday, gusts 20 to 40 miles per hour and the chances there, it's a slight chance, but a chance for a rumble of thunder and even seeing small hail. let's go hour by hour for you. watch the time stamp at 5:00 on friday morning. the rain arrives with isolated downpours. that's the yellow you're seeing on your screen and that will continue through 7:00 in the morning and that's why the morning commute will be especially slow as the storm system moves through bringing

those downpours. even by 10:00, we are dealing with pockets of downpours. in the afternoon, isolated showers. cooler air moves in just north of ukiah. higher elevations are not out of the question that we could hear reports of a few snow flurries. 7:00 on your friday evening and the activity is really winding down as we approach the midnight hour, we expect the storm system to begin to exit our region. as it does, it's going to pull in some much cooler air. future track temperature shows you friday morning it's not that chilly, mainly in the 50s. behind that front, once it crosses, it drags cool canadian air here. friday evening, temperatures drop like a rock and you feel a lot of 30s to round out your day on friday. below average. showers move through and mainly mid-to low 50s are the name of the game as we end our work week. future rainfall, probably half an inch of rain. where the downpours set up, likely closer to an inch of
