>> the attorneys for the two families also filed lawsuits against oakland and the county. the attorneys to the landlord did not respond to the request gore comment. in an interview only on abc7 news, tony chaplin vows he will support the man who got the new chief. bill scott was named the new chief earlier this week. we have the exclusive interview with the outgoing interim chief. >> it is really a tough job. you know, you go from incredible highs to incredible lows and back up again. >> it's been seven months since tony chaplin was tapped by the mayor edwards lee to be interim police chief. a 26 year veteran, a police cop who rows through the ranks. in his tenure as top cop, he was instrumental in getting the use of force reform policy enacted.

do everything to support him. but it has nothing to do with his job. >> going back to living. >> abc news. there is a jailbreak that sparked a huge manhunt. two broke out of the santa clara jail last month. they were all eventually captured. our media partner, the mercury news, reports a former police officer snowa winchester tipped off jail guards about suspicious sounds he heard from a nearby jail cell. winchester is in jail facing unrelated sex charges. in a statement, they did not regard guards were tipped off about the noises but he said there was no evidence anyone helped them break out. she said internal affairs is investigating. if you haven't finished your christmas shopping, you still have today. last night bay area mauls were packed with people buying the last minute gifts. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. >> for the most part, it's pretty smooth. you just have a mission in mind

p good morning. an armed robbery started out like many others but the suspect didn't get away. two clerks were hurt but one was back last night. a teenager accused of trying to rob them is in police rustdy with a lesson he will never forget. we have the story from hayward. >> royal market is a local institution.

that's why neighbors are so disturbed about what happened tuesday night. >> we are thrilled they are okay. >> the robbery attempt was captured on store surveillance video. he comes in with the piston drawn and has it in the back of the clerk's head. but take a close look at the video. he's so fixated on getting to the cash he's completely unaware the clerk's brother is sneaking up behind him. he grabs him and wrestles him to the floor. during the struggle the gun goes off once and possibly twice. from another angle you could see the gunfire. one brother is wounded in the hip. the other suffers a hand injury, but they managed to take the gun away from the would-be robber and pummel him with it. either broth wares seriously hurt and the only damage was a bullet hole in a nearby space heater. the owner of the store did not want to be interviewed but he said nothing like this has ever happened in the 15 years he's been in operation. he said his employees are heroes, and this neighbor agrees. >> you know, i'm very, very

pleased they are okay and amazed they had the composure to do what they did. >> the 16-year-old suspect was treated for his injuries and booked into juvenile haul. the two clerks were treated and released from the hospital and one of them is already back to work tonight. in hayward, eric thomas, abc7 news. >> all right. we will check out the arsenal the police found in the north bay. they sent us this picture showing 8 knives, a couple rivals a throwing star and a medieval weapon called a mace. all the attempts were on a man they arrested thursday night who tried to break in into a plant nursery on highway 116. he was accused of shooting the lock on the building. he's in jail this morning. a truckload of uber self-driving cars paw rayed through the streets of phoenix last night giving the governor another chance to take a shot at california. they arrived thursday a day. they said uber may want you and

he said his state is everything is california is not. >> i think this is a sign of arizona being a welcoming place, not only to people but businesses. we are a low tax, light regulation involvement state. plus we try harder. we want to grow our economy. uber stopped itself driving fleet in san francisco wednesday after the dmv said the cars were not properly registered. a new law starting on january 1st changes the rules about children and car seats. kids under age 2 will be required to use a rear-facing car seat. the law, signed by governor brown earlier this year, stems from the results of a 2007 study showing the rear facing car seats reduced the hikery hood of injury in a car accident. when a child is placed in a rear facing child safety seat, it's the much safer than having the child facing forward. if you have a collision that child is less likely to fly forward inside of your vehicle. >> and children who weigh more

than 40 pounds or who are more than 40 inches tall will be exempted from the new rule. >> starting today parking lots at both end of the golden gate bridge will be closed. on on weekends drivers line up trying to find a place to park. bridge officials recommended this. all right. heads-up if you ride bart. trains are on a holiday schedule from now to january 2nd. that means all next week instead of running trains on the pittsburgh bayport line every 5 minutes, they will run every 10 to 15 minutes the. and happening today state officials will open more of the california northern coast to commercial crab fishing between south point and the sonoma men seen no line will open today. and along with a stretch to humboldt county. they were closed because of unsafe toxin levels.

air. here's a look at doppler 7. you notice the shower activity is over the water and it is moving from northwest to southeast. so we are looking at a view stray showers around mont the ray. you see santa cruz. but the cold air is spilling in behind the system and that's the why the national weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for the mountains of santa cruz around boulder creek, and also down around big sur. so through 6:00 tonight snow levels down to 2,000 feet. certainly could see maybe a white christmas there. as we look at lake tahoe, still some snow. 19 degrees in blue canyon. avalanche warning here for the greater lake tahoe area. that's in red. and through 10:00 we are still looking at some very icy roads and perhaps anywhere from 1 to . it has been pretty treacherous there. but after this morning things really begin to quiet down and the cold air settles in once again. a live look from emeryville this morning where it is still in the 40s.

napa. 41 fremont. good morning los gatos, 46 for you and temperatures compared to 24 hours ago, 2 to 15 degrees colder. look at san jose. just in the 30s. your forecast this morning, 30s and 40s. still in the 40s by noontime. we are dry. it will be sunny and cool today. but the mornings, oh, boy, they will get even chillier. look for some of that dusting perhaps in some of our local mountains and we will talk further about the holidays and the week ahead coming up. >> thank you, lisa. a warning from the fbi going out across the u.s. isis sent out a hit list of churches and their addresses on social media calling for attacks on places of to warship and other holiday gathering sites on christmas. and authorities haven't identified any specific threats. the warning comes days after a truck drove into a christmas market in berlin, killing 12 people. yesterday the suspect was killed in a shootout in italy. it video showing him pledging his allegiance to isis.

this is time-lapse footage of the incredible process. christmas island is off the coast of western australia. the yearly ritual has been described as one of the wonders of the natural world. great news following yesterday's storms. some areas in the north bay have received double the normal amount of rain for this time of year. the largest reservoir, lake sonoma, is now at capacity. >> and with all the recent rain, much of the region is no longer in a drought. the storms this past week tipped the balance. with five years of drought, 15% of the state, probably the most northern interior is drought free. 60% remains in the three worst drought levels. as recently as september the entire state was at some level of drought. it's great to see. there's still too much red in the picture, but it's great to see the picture from a year ago. >> and we had the el nino last year that didn't help us out too much.

today. the coldest air should come in and settle in by monday night. we aren't going to recover until the middle of the week. so cold mornings. low snow levels. down to 2,000 feet. chilly for hanukkah tonight, christmas. a dry pattern lasts all week long. looking like right on through the end. the. christmas morning check it out. temperatures below freezing in our inland east bay. concord about 32. 36 on the peninsula. san jose, how about 29 up in petaluma? and even on the coast. bodega bay 34 degrees. getting to monday morning, sleep in. it's going to be just as cold. by tuesday, barely much of a change out there. so as we check out the highs across the lake, the grapevine, i-5, it is closed due to the icing conditions. if you are traveling or expecting folks from southern california, it's much more dicey in the southern part of our state than it is in the northern part.
