how is it looking out there, lisa? >> hi, matt. it's chilly. most of the precip has ended although the national weather service has advisories to pass on. you see see along the coast, the trajectory of some of the moisture in the higher elevations. that's why we have a winter weather advisory for the santa cruz mountains. snow levels down to 2,000 feet through this evening, and also the big sur mountains down there. so keep that in mind if you are travel. temperatures are much, much colder this morning, around freezing in parts of the inland valley. danville, 33 by the delta, 32 santa rosa. san jose up a degree at 40. overall everyone is two to as much as fourteen degrees colder since the passage of the cold front. you see the good visibility. gusty winds along the coast and higher elevations. it will be chilly right through noontime. this is just the beginning of the cold air that will settle in for christmas and the day after.

highs today in the low 50s under sunny conditions. i'll let you know if we have more rain coming in our future coming up in a few minutes, matt. this morning "star wars" actress carrie fisher is in the hospital suffering from cardiac arrest. she was rushed to the hospital. she's in critical condition and on a ventilator this morning. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the details. >> carrie fisher's brother, todd, tells our sister station she suffered a heart attack aboard her united airlines flight from london as they approached lax. >> we have a nonresponsive passenger. nurses are assisting the nonresponsive passenger. >> passengers aboard started tweeting what they saw. another actress was sitting nearby. "don't now how else to process this but carrie fisher stopped breathing on the flight home. hope she'll be okay." >> the pilot called for help

the attorneys said they don't respond to litigation. the attorneys to the landlord did not respond to the request for comment. in an interview only on abc7 news, tony chaplin vows he will support the man who got the new cleve position. bill scott was named the new chief earlier this week. we have the exclusive interview with the outgoing interim chief. >> it is really a tough job. you know, you go from incredible highs to incredible lows and back up again. >> it's been seven months since tony chaplin was tapped by the mayor ed lee to be interim police chief. a 26-year veteran, a police cop who rows through the ranks. in his tenure as top cop, he was instrumental in getting the use of force reform policy enacted. there have been no scandals under his watch. a long stalemate with an armed man barricaded in this chinatown apartment ended without

we have more details on the jailbreak that sparked a huge manhunt. two broke out of the santa clara jail last month. they were all eventually captured. our media partner, the mercury news, reports a former police officer, noah winchester, tipped off jail guards about suspicious sounds he heard from a nearby jail cell. winchester is in jail facing unrelated sex charges. in a statement, they did not de deny they were tipped off about the noises, but he said there was no evidence anyone helped them break out. she said internal affairs is investigating. if you haven't finished your christmas shopping, you still have today. last night bay area malls were packed with people buying the last minute gifts. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. >> for the most part, it's pretty smooth. you just have a mission in mind what you want to do and get in and get out. >> he was taking a break on a mall bench.

like many others, but the suspect didn't get away. two clerks were hurt in the attack, but one was back to work last night. a teenager accused of trying to rob them is in police custody with a lesson he will never forget. we have the story from hayward. >> reporter: royal market is a local institution. that's why neighbors are so disturbed about what happened tuesday night. >> we are just thrilled they are okay. >> the robbery attempt was captured on store surveillance video. the gunman enters in with the pistol drawn and has it in the back of the clerk's head. but take a close look at the video. he's so fixated on getting to the cash, he's completely unaware the clerk's brother is sneaking up behind him. in a flash he grabs the gunman and wrestles him to the floor. during the struggle the gun goes off once and possibly twice. from another angle you could see the gunfire. one brother is wounded in the hip. the other suffers a hand injury, but they managed to take the gun away from the would-be robber and pummel him with it.

neither brother was seriously hurt, and the only damage was a bullet hole in a nearby space heater. the owner of the store did not want to be interviewed, but he said nothing like this has ever happened in the 15 years he's been in operation. he said his employees are heroes, and this neighbor agrees. >> you know, i'm very, very pleased they are okay and amazed they had the composure to do what they did. >> the 16-year-old suspect was treated for his injuries and booked into juvenile hall. the two clerks were treated and released from the hospital and one of them is already back to work tonight. in hayward, eric thomas, abc7 news. check out the arsenal the police found in the north bay. they sent us this picture showing eight knives, a couple rifles, a throwing star and a medieval weapon called a mace. all the attempts were on a man they arrested thursday night who tried to break into a plant nursery on highway 116.

he was accused of shooting the lock on the building. he's in jail this morning. a truckload of uber self-driving cars paraded through the streets of phoenix last night, giving the governor another chance to take a shot at california. they arrived thursday a day. he told uber officials, california may not want you, but we do. he said his state is everything california is not. >> i think this is a sign of arizona being a welcoming place, not only to people but businesses. we are a low tax, light regulation involvement state. plus we try harder. we want to grow our economy. uber stopped its self-driving fleet in san francisco wednesday after the dmv said the cars were not properly registered. a new law starting on january 1st changes the rules about children and car seats. kids under age 2 will be required to use a rear-facing car seat. the law, signed by governor brown earlier this year, stems from the results of a 2007 study

showing the rear-facing car seats reduced the likelihood of injury in a car accident. when a child is placed in a rear facing child safety seat, it's the much safer than having the child facing forward. if you have a collision that child is less likely to fly forward inside of your vehicle. >> and children who weigh more than 40 pounds or who are more than 40 inches tall will be exempted from the new rule. >> starting today parking lots at both end of the golden gate bridge will be closed. it's a a move to ease backups that happen on weekends when drivers line up trying to find a place to park. bridge officials recommended this. heads-up if you ride bart. trains are on a holiday schedule from now to january 2nd. that means all next week instead of running trains on the pittsburgh bayport line every 5 minutes, they will run every 10 to 15 minutes the. and happening today state officials will open more of the

california northern coast to commercial crab fishing between south point and the sonoma-mendocino will open today. and along with a stretch to humboldt county. they were closed because of unsafe toxin levels. what a difference a year makes, right? fresh and affordable crab is flying off the shelves in san francisco. abc7 news was on california street where they were busy filling orders all day yesterday. tony said crab is so plentiful this year, the price is $10 to $49 a pound, lower than previous years. last year was a disaster with algae and weather causing a dismal season. happening today raiders fans will distribute thousands of these post cards to keep the silver and black in oakland. 5,000 addressed to roger goodell will be signed at the game.

authorities believe he recorded it days before he drove this massive truck through a christmas market in berlin. he was gunned down by italian police after slipping through the borders of at least three different countries, crossing from germany into france, boarding a train to italy and then on to milan. >> investigators say he came out of this train station. it was about 1:00 a.m.. at that time. night the there are no more trains going to the town where he was killed. so the question is how did he get there, and why? >> at 3:00 a.m. two police officers on a routine patrol spotting him lurking alone. they found him suspicious and asked for i.d. instead, he pulled a pistol from his backpack and fired, shouting, "police bastards." one officer hit in the shoulder. the bullet piercing his uniform. and the other, a trainee, shooting back and killing the fugitive. there are still questions. did he have accomplices? was he planning to meet someon?

you are head today the mountains, sierra nevada. even our local mountains. you can still see moisture headed over the coast. the higher elevations mainly but still a system to push through the bay area. that will bring the colder air. want to take you down to southern california where, boy, it's a mess down there. in the low 40s with the rain-snow mix in the desert there. if you are traveling to the south or expecting anyone, it is going to be pretty dicey moving up through the central part of the state. so as we get back here locally, notice the pinking here around big sur. this is the rain changing over to snow. so the snow levels continue to lower throughout the day. down to around 2500 feet. the national weather service has put up a winter weather advisory. good idea to download our app. you will get the push alerts and you can see where the inclimate weather is. until 6:00 here locally, also in the mountains until 10:00 looking at snow, perhaps another couple inches on the way to the sierra nevada, the west slope.

globe-trotting christmas trip to give presents to children. this post office in finland gets around half a million letters and wish lists each year. it gets up to 32,000 letters a day as christmas gets closer. our letters to santa are taking a back seat to letters some children wrote to planet earth. >> i'm sure some wore the santa hats in the bay area just to stay warm. >> the cold air is moving in, and with it the moisture along the most. a winter weather advisory for the santa cruz mountains. highs today under sunny skies, low 50s palo alto. it's definitely cool but the overnight lows could be around freezing. notice the highs stuck in the 50s but the lows in the low 30s or upper 20s in the valleys. we get warmer during the week but notice we are dry looks like right on through the end of the year. that's good news. we are well above normal, of course, in rainfall. >> thank you, lisa, and thanks for joining us on the abc7 mornings. i'm matt keller in for chris
