where a bad crash blocking several lanes on southbound 280. >> let's get to matt keller live at the scene. matt? >> reporter: good morning. this is really interesting. this is a first time i have ever seen this. they brought out tow trucks not only for the vehicle here and brought a tow truck out for the engine sitting here in the middle of the southbound lanes of 280. we have also learned new details of the last time i saw you. chp says this was caused bay wrong way driver. now they're trying to figure out the red car or another vehicle that was driving the wrong way and ended up being a head-on

collision. chp thought it was a possible fatality. firefighters heard the victim in the red car scream out. >> i can tell you what a fire captain said. they got here and heard the lady in the red car screaming, they took it as a good sign. she is still alive. seeing the injuries on the car, you don't expect that. that's a good thing. >> reporter: yeah, that woman still had serious injuries and taken to the hospital. she collided head on with the gray vehicle. another vehicle involved. the driver of that car is okay and was checked out and left the scene. the driver of the gray vehicle taken with a serious ankle injury. broken anxiousing l. two southbound lanes are open. chp said they expect to be out here for about another hour. it is really cold out here. as all the firefighters were working to get the scene clear and now up to the tow truck drivers to get this engine and red vehicle off the freeway so they can open up all of the

could have because we have numbers below freezing navajo, plenty of sunshine and high clouds. notice that 62 degrees. san jose at 5 degrees bf average. jessica? >> thank you. a gunman is still on the loose this morning after killing a former marine monday night in oakland. it happened right around brook dale and 35th avenues. police say 23 kristopher killian was visiting friends and killed. neighbors say the area is usually safe and quiet. one resident we spoke with who doesn't want his face shown describes what he heard. >> four shots. evenly spaced. pause. about four more shots evenly spaced, pause. about eight shots evenly spaced. keep my eyes open a little bit more in and out of the house but no. pit's -- those things happen. >> killian's sister set up a go

since the original disaster when a giant asphalt truck slid down the hill into the garage. >> reporter: work was an attempt to fix the damage. as the truck driver unloaded materials from the heavy truck, the ground gave way and the truck flipped. police blocked the street from traffic. the 70,000-pound truck spilled fluid and oil on the steep hill. they got the truck back up on its eels. the driver of the truck was not injured. as for the beers -- >> i'm going to be glad when 2016 is over because it hasn't been a very good year. >> reporter: they're looking forward to moves past this in the new year. sausalito, abc 7 news. as donald trump plans his transition to the white house, he had a slight problem at his new york home. look at that video. people running out of there.

trump tower in manhattan evacuated yesterday because of a suspicious package. a bomb squad checked out a bag left unatepided. turns out it was full of toys. the president-elect was at the florida estate during incident and where the president-elect sent this tweet. slamming president obama. he said, quote, president obama campaigned hard and personally in the very important swing states and lost. the voters wanted to make america great again. this tweet is in response to a recent interrue of mr. obama saying that he would have won a third term if he had ran again. meanwhile, president obama and japan's prime minister wrapping up a historic visit to pearl harbor. the nation's leaders laid wreaths and scattered petals. this is the first joint visit for both nations. president obama said it demonstrates the power of reconciliation and even enmips can be allies when war comes to an end. last week, a personal piece

this morning, we are hearing from the family of actress carrie fisher known for playing princess lei in "star wars." she went into cardiac arrest last friday while aboard a flight. her younger brother todd spoke publicly of her sudden death. >> we have just seen her pull out so many times and survive so many things that there was no way to talk. i hope people don't think our silence is more than just praying for the best. we have really been close our

whole lives and it's a very strange place to be looking at the world without her. >> carrie fisher was 60 years old. 5:13 now. police in arkansas obtained a search warrant for an amazon echo hoping that it might reveal evidence in a murder investigation. police searched the device and asking amazon to hand over voice recordings. the echo itself doesn't store user questions but amazon's server certainly do. police think that the suspect activated it and recording may solve the crime. amazon declined to comment on the specific case but released a statement saying the company will not release customer information without a valid and binding legal demand. today's first look, a tragic end for actress and instructor who went missing on the way to christmas dinner. >> police say they found the

46-year-old's body in the stolen car and they have a suspect in custody. abc has the details in the gma first look. >> reporter: in the first look, the search for answers after a yoga teacher is found dead. 46-year-old trisha mccawley's body early tuesday in d.c. she was a beloved instructor. >> she was just a very inspiring person. >> reporter: and a long-time actor. appearing in the 2006 film "step up." she was last seen sunday afternoon. police immediately issued an alert for the person believed to be driving the car. 29-year-old adrian dwayne johnson apprehended nearby. the body found in her car. now, johnson charged with theft, simple assault and her murder. as the community mourns. and coming up at 7:00 a.m., more on the investigation. with your gma first look, abc

news, new york. and this morning, police in gilroy want help tracking down a burglar who stole presents of a family's christmas tree. video shows the man in the home on spencer court in gilroy on december 15th. after rummaging around, he took off with two presents and the burglar disconnected the security camera but it had already been downloaded to the family's server. call police if you know anything. 5:16. happening today, staff will demonstrate how trees are recycled. officials remind residents to put them out on trash day. you need to remove the stand and the decorations before putting it out. curbside pickup begins january 2nd and continue through the 14th. to ring in the new year, cal train with additional trains and free rides on new year's eve. starting 8:00 p.m., they stop charging fares for passengers. and the agency also adding four

two transported with serious injuries. takng up three lanes and debris and vehicles moving by so we have the far right lane and exit lane open at the moment. not a terrible backup. you can stick to 880 northbound and then head south on 87 or 101. i want to take you to the central valley. westbound 580 before north flynn road. a fully engulfed vehicle fire. i'm not sure if this is onlooker delay or a lane blocked. down to 6 miles per hour past the interchange so definitely expect some stop and go traffic heading through the area. and bart, we have a developing problem here, as well. fruitvale station, a disabled train. we're up to a 20-minute delay now. bart says they're single tracking around the disabled train and it is empty. an update on all the stuff in a few. right now the forecast with lisa. good morning. >> good morning.

despite the high cost of housing, there's a survey finding san francisco is the best in the country for college students. the american institute for economic research used nine criteria in the survey including youth unemployment, diversity, rental costs and presence of arts and entertainment. san francisco study states offers a favorable economic climate and strong opportunities for work after graduation. this is the call that put warriors fans in a bad mood on christmas. we are hearing from kevin durant after the nba reviewed the final play of the game against the cavs. so many people have talked about. the league says durant was fouled, should have been awarded two free-throws and that could have given the warriors the win and durant lashed out at if league not the refs when asked about it last night. >> the refs didn't lose us the game. we could have been better. i think it's [ bleep ]. the nba, the nba throw the refs under the bus like that.

breaking news for an hour now on interstate 280 in san jose. >> a nasty crash blocking several lanes still. matt keller gathering new details. he joins us live. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning. behind me is the crash scene. i'll show you what's happened to the vehicles. they're down here on the right-hand side of the southbound lanes here of 280. they were able to get the red vehicle and its engine off the road here and working on cleaning up 280 and getting the debris off the road to open up all the lanes. let's show you new video we shot since we last saw you. a tow truck hooking up an engine in the middle lane of 280 and on to the bed of the truck and about 30 feet away, another tow truck picking up the vehicle where that engine came from. chp said it was a head-on crash caused by a wrong way driver. they believe the volkswagen was going northbound in the

southbound direction. and the driver had serious injuries and taken to the hospital. driver of the gray car involved had a severely broken ankle. another vehicle involved. the driver is okay and checked out and left the scene. we're here with the sergeant. are we going to be kicked off the freeway in a minute? >> five-minute warning. >> reporter: you're expecting all lanes to be open? >> within five minutes, i need you to move so we can open the lanes. we won't let you get run over. >> reporter: we appreciate that very much. as you know, we heard, we got the five-minute warning. back to you in the studio. >> great news for commuters this morning. >> sure is good news. hoping by 5:45, 15 minutes from now we should have all the lanes back open. not a terrible backup right now. at most about three quarters of a mile of heavy delays there but as they continue and closer to reopening, hopefully not having a major issue, especially since

covering carrie fisher's death. this is an incorrect camera shot. the earthquakes struck after midnight, there we go. four minutes apart in nevada southeast of south lake tahoe. a third measured 5.6. just after 1:00 a.m. the shaking felt in the central valley. one abc 7 news viewer reported feeling it in san francisco soma neighborhood. no reports of any damage. and now on to the death of carrie fisher. from hollywood to the bay area, "star wars" fans paying tribute to her. she passed away after cardiac arrest late last week. she was 60 years old. fans left messages for fisher at lucas films campus. fans say that they were inspired by fisher playing the princess in the "star wars" trilogy. >> part of our generation. part of what you were brought up with. it's nice to show that little bit of respect. >> there was no movie out there

with a woman that had, you know, something. right? that was going to star in an action-packed movie. and so she was my idol. >> idol for many for feminism and honesty. san francisco's roxie theater will screen a movie of hers on new year's eve. >> she was such an icon. obviously, we'll follow the story for you throughout the day. also tracking new details on a rash of sick calls of muni. >> more than 80 employees called in on a single day and could be an ongoing problem. news reporter amy hollyfield has more. >> reporter: yeah. new report from the city controller's office says muni has a problem with employees calling in sick and that's impacting taxpayers and customers. passengers on the buses and trains according to the report workers calling in sick costing the agency $42 million a year in

leave pay. the rate of absenteeism second highest in the city out of the ten largest departments and there's 132 focus groups and said that some employees said they take sick days because the vacation requests aren't approved and the report has some recommendations. here are a couple of them. among the suggestions to hire someone to track the absences. also, to strengthen the agency's reward and recognition program for its employees. and then finally, establish an absence management policy. these absences, of course, affect the riders. last week, they canceled rooutds because so many people had called in sick. we'll be asking passengers this morning for reaction to this report.% live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. a san francisco judge has rejected a bid to block a new use of force policy which would prohibit officers from firing at

certain control holds. the san francisco police officer's association filed the lawsuit. they were seeking to block the city from implementing this new policy. well, the union said the city had engaged in unfair labor practices by refusing to bargain further on the policy and talks eventually reached an impasse. city attorneys argued the policy was a managerial decision, not subject to union negotiation. new this morning, oakland mayor said violent crime is down 5% in the city includes murder, manslaughter, robbery and rape. the mayor says that the year is third consecutive year that violent crime decreased in oakland crediting the drop in part to operation cease fire with police, prosecutors and community leaders offering support to gang me believes. sky 7 was above burlingame after a man was killed on cal train tracks o. officials say a northbound train heading to san

francisco hit a man who was trespassing. it happened near howard avenue yesterday. buses took passengers around the scene until southbound tracks reopened and there were delays of about half an hour. it's the 12th cal train related death this year. a husband is prime suspect in the stabbing death of his wife on christmas eve. officers arrested marco arrias on saturday remaining at the santa clara county jail. police found his wife suffering from at least one stab wound responding to a 911 call on north 10th street. she died after being rushed to the hospital. happening today, a former east bay drug dealer serving 35-year sentence will be released thanks to president obama. 48-year-old darryl lamar reed had the sentence commuted in august. reed was 20 years old when he was found guilty of distributing crack and cocaine in 1990. he was a kingpin in oakland's

drug trade as part of the reagan era's war on drugs, he got a stiff sentence of 35 years in prison. we talked with a former county deputy district attorney. he said he's shocked and that reed should stay in prison calling haim major player in the dug trade. a former versace employee in livermore is suing the company claiming racial discrimination. the lawsuit alleges a training manager at the outlet store gave him a code to say when african-american customers would walk in. the man is of mixed ethnicity and said he told management he was african-american and then fired two weeks later missing some pay. >> he's making the allegation that what happened to him happened to a whole class of people. and so, he would have to prove that. >> versace is denying the allegations saying they does not tolerate discrimination. good morning to you. wednesday morning.

deja vu with frosty temperatures in the east bay, north bay. 30s again. peninsula and south bay. san francisco and the coast, sitting mild. mid to 40s to mid-50s and 30 sa taro sa. 32 concord, brentwood, livermore. it is cold. but we are going to see temperatures come up 30 degrees. high clouds. upper 50s from san francisco and in our inland east bay you will be on the cooler side. compared to the low 60s. so those inland temperatures taking a little bit more time to warm up and then getting into tomorrow, little warmer. how about mid-60s in the south bay and also in the north bay? but by friday, a few high clouds beginning to cool off. let's plan your new year's eve starting noontime in the mid-50s. partly cloudy skies and cooler by late friday and then 4:00 p.m. still chilly conditions. we're keeping the rain away. 8:00, though. mid-40s and by midnight, low to mid-40s. bundle up.

welcome back. we have some breaking news just coming in. officials say a 40-year-old man has been detained in connection with the deadly berlin truck attack. german prosecutors say the man's phone number was saved in the phone of the man believed to have driven the truck. he died in a shootout with police near milan last friday. 12 people killed and 56 others injured when a stolen truck slammed into a christmas market last week. 5:44 now. today two suspects in a deadly stabbing at a hayward target on christmas eve are expected to appear in court. 22-year-old and 25-year-old are accused of stabbing this man, tyrone griffin to death. the 36-year-old victim leaves behind four children. grifb's girlfriend said he encountered two men in the toy department in target about the music playing in the store. the two men were arrested a short time later. griffin's mother said he spent sometime in prison were a
