reynolds was sad, emotional, of course, as you would be who lost a daughter at 60 years old, but that night, she was sharp, doing well, and she did actually sleep -- slept in, he said, and then in the morning, though, he noticed she was sluggish and not quite with it, and then around noon was when, you know, he started to notice things were wrong, and that she had said that that quote about missing her daughter and wanted to see her again, and 30 minutes later, she was gone. apparently, a year and a half ago she had a stroke, and she recovered, but she wasn't in great health. she was kind of fragile. something like this just takes its toll, and, i mean, really just heart breaking and stressful, and she couldn't just cope with it. >> she was taken to the hospital, but doctors told todd there was little they could do. tell us about the bond. we see mother, daughter, granddaughter there, and brother all in that photo there.

tell us about the bond, though, between carrie and debbie. >> the two of them so close, which a lot of people didn't notice or known from early writings by carrie fisher about how, you know, their relationship was a little rocky. it was typical mother-daughter, famous mother-daughter, but their bond followed in their professional life. we heard, you know, talking about how reynold's shot to fame at age 19. in "singing in the rain." carrie fisher, 19 when she shot to fame, and they, at the end, were close as close could be. they lived next door to each other. there was basically a compound that they shared here in los angeles, and this hbo documentary we'll see really explores that. it premiered at the cann film festival earlier in the year. people have seen it. i've read about it myself. i have not seen it myself, but we get to see that bond, that special connection, and that's what they wanted to show in the documentary. it was just to show the two of them together, which is apparently a magical thing that

convicted charleston church shooter dylann roof plans to call no witnesses during the penalty phase of his trial. that begins next week. roof plans to act as his own attorney during this phase, even though he could get the death penalty. he said he intends to make opening and closing statements, but no plans beyond that to present a defense. dramatic rescue of three teenagers off the florida keys after the boat capsized. their 22-foot boat took on water two and a half miles into the ocean off the torch key. the boat capsized. one of the boys managed to save his phone and calmed 911. >> lucky there. a marine deputy spotted the teens perched on the overturned boat. their jackets under the vessel. the boys are from orange county, california, and they were on vacation. the authorities say do stick with your vessel, and those kids learned that. >> reporter: took a minute for the boat to go down, but that one of the boys immediately saw the phone, jumped in the water, and held his hand up out of the water and called 911 while they climbed to the top of the boat.

then died tuesday morning. reynolds stayed by her daughter's side until the end then she had to be rushed to the hospital the next day. she was 84. todd fisher said he's comforted knowing his mother loved taking care of carrie. the nearly inseparable mother and daughter now joined together in death. abc news, los angeles. diane, kendis? >> all right. thank you. many people believe reynolds died of a broken heart saying her son said the stress of his sister's death was too much for his mom. >> we go to the medical unit for a look at science behind it, dan, good morning. is it possible to actually die of a broken heart? >> setting aside debbie's situation for now, because it's hard to tell exactly what role that might have played, but we know that losing a child is about the most stressful event any parent can go through. certainly, there are physiological effects to this emotional stress. you have certain increases of

high blood pressure. you have other things happening in the body. now, most of the research done so far has to do with chronic, long-term stress and effect that can have on the heart and the cardiovascular system, but one thing is very clear, obviously debby reynolds was affected by her daughter's death and the timing of this is actually quite coincidental. >> it appears she died from a stroke. what physical effects does that have, then? what brings along a stroke like that? >> well, there's different types of stroke. there's a stroke where you have a block of a blood vessel leading to the brain. there's other strokes as well, and one interesting point about debbie's situation is that she does have a history of stroke. we know that when carrie fisher was interviewing with "people" magazine she mentioned last year her mother experienced a stroke, so already we're dealing with someone who has a history of this particular complication.

could it be that this stress of this event was what kind of triggered that and pushed thing over the edge? it is possible. it's hard to say at this moment, but, certainly, this was a devastating loss. >> the common credo this year is that 2016 needs to go away and that it's taken so many. that being said, if the stress of losing someone can contribute to something like this, how do you manage that stress to try to prevent more tragedy begetting more tragedy? >> well, one thing to mention is that when ever there is a tragic loss like this, if someone experiences something like that, it's not just the immediate physiological effects, but also the way that you react to them. oftentimes when we deal with something this traumatic, we forget to take care of ourselves. there's so many things to deal with and we would be dealing with a situation where we're supposed to take our medications and we forget to or we are supposed to eat or sleep and we forget to do that. all these things have real effects on your health, and if

you're already ailing from something else or if you're dealing with a lot of other things, this can bring to the forefront certain health problems that might have been unnoticed before. >> 2016 has taken so many people, blaming it on the year itself, but, you know, life expectancy is down, a lot of contributing factors, and the people were fairly young. is there anymore useful lesson we can glean from this other than saying, go away, 2016? >> we've seen dozens and dozens of celebrities this year that lost their lives, and some of them, certainly, it's due to what would be called snatch rale causes. then there's other situations where it's not so natural. if there's any reminder here, is that there are sometimes certain things we can do to prevent -- to improve our health and to prevent certain things from happening. in other cases, there's simply things that are beyond our control and we just need to deal with those things as best we

what else do we know at this point from todd fisher about what happened and how his mom fell ill? >> caller: we knew that after carrie fisher had died, debbie reynolds was sad, emotional, of course, as you would be who lost a daughter at 60 years old, but that night, she was sharp, doing well, and she did actually sleep -- slept in, he said, and then in the morning, though, he noticed she was sluggish and not quite with it, and then around noon was when, you know, he started to notice things were wrong, and that she had said that that quote about missing her daughter and wanted to see her again, and 30 minutes later, she was gone. apparently, a year and a half ago she had a stroke, and she recovered, but she wasn't in great health. she was kind of fragile. something like this just takes its toll, and, i mean, really just heart breaking and stressful, and she couldn't just cope with it. >> she was taken to the hospital, but doctors told todd there was little they could do. tell us about the bond. we see mother, daughter, granddaughter there, and brother all in that photo there. tell us about the bond, though,

between carrie and debbie. >> the two of them so close, which a lot of people didn't notice or known from early writings by carrie fisher about how, you know, their relationship was a little rocky. it was tough being mother and daughter, famous mother and daughter. but their bond followed in their professional life. we heard, you know, talking about how reynold's shot to fame at age 19. in "singing in the rain." carrie fisher, 19 when she shot to fame as princess leia. and at the end, they were close as close could be. they lived next door to each other. there was basically a compound that they shared here in los angeles, and this hbo documentary we'll see really explores that. it premiered at the cann film festival earlier in the year. people have seen it. i've read about it myself.

i have not seen it myself, but we get to see that bond, that special connection, and that's what they wanted to show in the documentary. it was just to show the two of them together, which is apparently a magical thing that we have not really seen when they are not on, when they are not performing. just the two of them sharing love for each other, and that's what we're going to see in this. >> so many looking forward to seeing that and getting that glimpse behind the curtain, especially under the circumstances. jason, there's a big outpouring from hollywood. of course in reaction to this. are the responses sticking out to you? >> caller: yeah. i think a couple, as we talk about some of the last of the golden age of hollywood, these people that have really, you know, defined the early years of hollywood, so we get quotes from, tweets from joan collins, who said she's truly heartbroken to hear debbie reynolds died. she was a wonderful friend and warm colleague. william shatner said she was the last of hollywood royalty, breaks my heart she's gone, i hope my grieving was done for 2016, echoing the sentiment a lot of us feel right now, and ellen degeneres saying, i can't imagine what the family is going through this week.

shooter dylann roof plans to call no witnesses during the penalty phase of his trial. that phase begins next week. roof plans to act as his own attorney during this phase, even though he could get the death penalty. he said he intends to make opening and closing statements, but no plans beyond that to present a defense. dramatic rescue of three teenagers off the florida keys after the boat capsized. their 22-foot boat took on water two and a half miles into the ocean off the torch key. the boat capsized. one of the boys managed to save his phone and calmed 911. >> lucky there. a marine deputy spotted the teens perched on the overturned boat. their jackets under the vessel. the boys are from orange county, california, and they were on vacation. the authorities say do stick with your vessel, and those kids learned that. >> reporter: took a minute for the boat to go down, but that one of the boys immediately saw the phone, jumped in the water, and held his hand up out of the water and called 911 while they climbed to the top of the boat.
