millions of already rung in the new year. here in the bay area we're now one hour and counting until 2017. thank you for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler in for eric thomas. the celebrations have been going on all night all over the world. fireworks celebrations lit up the skies above manila. right now an estimated 200,000 people are ready for the big show to ring in the new year here in san francisco. abc7 is live with more.

>> good evening, carolyn. tonight we witnessed something a little different. a political protest as a new year's eve celebration. around 100 people marched down market street. and at one point they shut it down. first this view. there are hundreds of thousands of people gathering to watch the fireworks and they're bundled up. >> reporter: before the crackle of fireworks, the sizzle of bacon draws people. >> we drove out here for this. >> reporter: from where? >> fresno. >> reporter: for a bacon wrapped hot dog. yeah. no, i'm joking. we came for the fireworks. >> reporter: and a moment of gratitude. >> thank you for everything you do for us. thank you so much. >> they protect us and keep our streets safe. >> reporter: others say they're protesting to protect civil liberties, shutting down market

side. the shooting happened moments at midnight new year's day. 16 of those killed were foreigners visiting turkey. and in response new york city's patrol increased patrol. a solemn event to remember this year's homicide victims in oakland. abc7 was at st. columbus catholic church where people prayed for the victims. there were 83 homicides in oakland in 2016. for every person who was killed they place a white cross on the front lawn. today it was time to take them down in hopes for a more peaceful 2017. >> oakland community organization, charities and several other groups with a service to remember those who lost their lives and work toward

changing the statistic for the following year. >> the church also placed a special cross honoring the 36 victims of the ghost ship warehouse fire. they hope a vehicle's broken side mirror helps them find the driver who left the scene after hitting a bicyclist today. the victim suffered a serious head injury. he was struck along columbus parkway around 4:00 this afternoon. he was rushed to a trauma center aboard the medical helicopter. police want to hear from you if you saw that crash. and two massive crashes into southbound i-5 near bakersfield shut down more than 12 hours after they happened. that's because more than 20 cars were involved just north of the highway 99 split. two people died. our affiliate reports both victims were from antika. there was fog at the time of the

crashes. a man is accused of walking into a donut shop in richmond and threatening people with a samurai sword. we have the surveillance video. >> reporter: this happened christmas eve but they just released details this weekend. in the video the man seems to lose his temper. and then pulls out his sword. >> from the security video you can see the samurai sword sticking out of his sweaters. for imphecustomers it was a sho. >> he came in and started going bonkers. >> at first the man hit a chair and then threw it across the donut shop. one of the customers tells him to leave. people driving by started driving 9-1-1. >> the car passing through the area saw a man with a sword. >> reporter: the rampage only lasted a few seconds. he didn't hit or cut anyone but he left damage before walking out of the shop. >> he hit the other display case

right now expelled russian diplomats who worked in san francisco are on a flight back to moscow. they said the diplomats and seven of their family members drove to lax to catch a flight to russia. they'll ring in the new year midair. meanwhi meanwhile, there's no evidence that suggests russian hackers may have breached an american power company. >> reporter: tonight on a tar pac outside washington that russian plane sits waiting as the clock ticks down. 35 russian diplomats and their families almost 100 people in total have less than 24 hours to get out of u.s. already two lavish russian retreats have been shut down.

and tonight new concerns the russians may have also targeted the american electrical system, a code linked to the russian hack found on a laptop. the apparent hack raises questions about the security of the u.s. power grid. the discovery comes as president-elect trump is raising russian president putin tweeting it was a great move for him not to retaliate against the new sanctions saying i always knew he was smart. but even some republican lawmakers disagree. >> to come out and say it never happened and if it did it's not a big deal and we've done worse is a different thing. i hope that tone changes. >> reporter: trump as renied u.s. intelligence and questioned if russia was behind the hacking. now with an interview, trump's new press secretary questions if the punishment fits the crime. in. >> you look at 35 people being

now your forecast with drew tuma. >> we're finishing the final hour of 2016 dry, but there re several chances for showers in the week. a couple of isolated sprinkles. tonight moisture is out and we're clear. outside we go. our camera on the roof looking on the em bar ka. folks are gathered where in a little over 450 minutes there will be fireworks and we'll become 2017. it's under dry skies and high temperatures. the arctic blast next week is on hold. we'll see several storms that create the rather unsettled pattern the next seven days. they'll keep the air north outside of the bay area. right now a mixed bag of temperatures. north to santa rosa, 35. down to 43 in san jose.
