response from the production team as she points the finger at them. good good monday morning and happy new year. i'm ryan smith. >> and i'm marci gonzalez. kendis and diane are off this morning. breaking news, isis is now claiming responsibility for the deadly attack at a nightclub in turkey. >> they say it was in response to turkey's military operations against isis. the popular istanbul club was packed with hundreds of revellers ringing in the new year when the gunman opened fire with a long barrelled weapon. he guns down a police officer and another person before storming the club. when it was over, at least 39 people were killed and nearly 70 wounded. many of them foreigners. >> american jake raak was among the wounded. he was in turkey vacationing with friends when he was struck in the leg. security cameras catching the seven murderous minutes. bullets ricochetting in the

the gulf coast and that is not the only trouble spot. accuweather's paul williams is tracking it all for us this morning. good morning, paul. >> good morning ryan, marci. right now we're bracing for the worst of the worst in the deep south. severe thunderstorms and the threat of actual tornados and that's precipitated by this low pressure system that's going to track towards the northeast and dig into the moisture coming out of the gulf. the combination will make for widespread rain showers throughout the southeast, mid mississippi valley region and up towards indiana. rain is going to range between two and four inches in some areas so we're bracing for a chance of flash flooding. slippery conditions throughout the ohio valley region, pockets of rain throughout the mid-atlantic, slippery conditions for monday. then when we take a look at tuesday, the northeast is covered by this inundated amount of rain that's going to cause big-time travel delays from bangor down to richmond. marci, ryan? >> thank you, paul. the tournament of roses parade is held each year on new year's day unless the year begins on a sunday.

a grim milestone in chicago as a deadly year ends with 762 homicides. that's the most in two decades and more than in los angeles and new york combined. police blame much of the violence on gangs and illegal guns on the streets. meanwhile, three people were killed and 16 others wounded during the first hours of the new year. and seven people were injured in a drive-by shooting on new year's day in miami. police say the victims including three teenagers were standing outside of a home when someone in a car pulled up and opened fire last night. a 17-year-old is in critical condition and the rest of the victims are in stable condition. police are still searching for the suspects. later today, the ntsb is expected to arrive in texas where two small planes collided mid-air. it happened saturday at a small airport about 35 miles north of dallas. three people died all aboard the planes. one plane's wreckage came down in a storage facility, the other on a road. both planes were on visual

20-year-old olivia gonzalez and her boyfriend, 21-year-old brian fernandez told their families they were traveling from their north hollywood homes to big sur about 300 miles away, saying they would be back home by christmas. >> i am about to break if i go home today and don't find my sister. >> reporter: the last clue to their whereabouts, a credit card in one of their names swiped at this general store and gas station about 70 miles away from their destination. >> it's nerve-racking. it's nerve-racking to have to come out here and talk to people in the town and see their expressions. >> reporter: both families hoping to hear from them soon. >> i'm just hoping that they're just two young adults that wanted to be off the map for a little bit and enjoy the scenery and that they'll come home. >> reporter: kayna whitworth, abc news, los angeles. and apple is being sued over a fatal car crash in which a driver was allegedly distracted by facetime. moriah modisette died in the

texas crash on christmas eve of 2014 after another driver crashed into her family's car. the driver reportedly told police that he was using facetime at the time of the wreck. the family alleges that apple failed to install a feature that could have prevented the driver from using the app while driving. apple is not commenting and has not yet filed a legal response to that lawsuit. the new public works commissioner is vowing to fix that broken sewer line that's created a major sinkhole and forced the evacuation of 22 homes near detroit. the commissioner says some of the families may be able to return in a week. the sinkhole was caused by an 11-foot sewer line that clogged and collapsed. while many of us were part partying or watching new year's celebrations on tv, someone in california was hard at work on new year's eve. he changed the iconic hollywood sign to read hollyweed. >> a male suspect was recorded on surveillance video about 3:00 in the morning. he modified the 40-foot high
