good afternoon, everybody. happy new year. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama daetz. we are going to begin the day with the weather because it is cold and more rain is heading our way this week. this is a live look at mt. tam where you can see the trees swaying a little bit in the breeze. it's kind of hard to see with that little bit of cloud cover out there. >> it is cloudy out there. looks a little gloomy. people enjoying the day off at san francisco's pier 39. they're all bundled up dealing with the chilly weather and a little bit of rain. wasn't enough to keep the umbrellas out but that is going to change pretty soon. >> check this out, the snow came down pretty hard overnight in napa county. this is along highway 29 at the summit of mt. st. helena.

let's head right to spencer christian for a look at our forecast. >> we've got snow levels down to about 2,000 feet. that will be the situation tonight overnight. right now on live doppler 7 we're looking at patches of mainly light rain but up in the north bay i it's a bit more widy scattered. it's heavier near hillsburg and eastern sonoma county, up around mt. st. helena area it's quite active there. let's take a look at our storm impact scale. a significant storm is on the way. it will hit us mainly tomorrow. we'll see windy conditions in the afternoon and evening. the commute will be a messy one. generally rainfall totals range from half an inch to 2 inches. starting at 6:00 this evening as we get later into the evening hours, we'll see more snow developing up in the higher elevations of northern sonoma county, parts of mendocino county, lake county and pockets of rain becoming more widespread across the entire region. by 5:00 tomorrow in the morning

as the morning commute gets under way we'll see more widespread rainfall. generally light to moderate. by mid-afternoon we'll be getting pounded with lots of moderate to heavy rain as indicated by the yellows and oranges here and it's just going to be a mess going into the afternoon and evening commute. expect downpours, ponding on roads, winds gusting 20 to 40 miles an hour. as we look at the rainfall totals for the seven days ahead, santa rosa will get about 5.65 inches of rain we project over the next seven days, which is actually more than one-third of san jose's average annual rainfall. it's going to be wet. i'll have more details a little bit later. larry. >> to say the least. thank you, spencer. the wet, cold weather brought snow to some bay area peaks. this is video from mt. hamilton this morning. elissa harrington was at the south bay mountain where lots of people were out enjoying the snow. >> reporter: at first glance it might look like the sierra, but this is the bay area. snow fell on mt. hamilton in santa clara county overnight.

>> beautiful. it's beautiful but cold. >> reporter: caltrans closed the road to the top. the lick observatory shut down for the day too. that didn't stop some people. >> i'm not used to it but i could hardly feel my hands. >> reporter: dming domingo sant his family came up any way. they took the opportunity to have a rare bay area snowball fight. >> we were supposed to go to lake tahoe but something happened, but we have like a lake tahoe here. >> i'm stoked on it, very excited. >> reporter: matt brooks works at the observatory. like many employees, he lives on the mountain. >> the snow started last night. i've got some guests here. we weren't really expecting it. woke up, looked outside and everything was covered in snow. >> reporter: the chilly change of weather a surprise for his friends visiting from arizona. >> we came to california not expecting snow, so my feet are wet and i'm pretty cold but this has been pretty cool. >> reporter: we've seen a mix of

rain and snow flurries throughout the day. you can see it's sticking to the trees and to the ground turning this part of the bay area into a winter wonderland, a pretty special way for some families to start the new year. on mt. hamilton, elisa harrington, abc 7 news. >> chains are required in the sierra. these are the conditions along the highways up there, taking a look at that. several inches of snow have fallen. chains are required on interstate 80, highway 50. conditions are blustery and the highway patrol is reminding drivers to be extra cautious. >> to keep track of the snow and the rain where you live, download the abc 7 news app. you can see live doppler 7 and be sure you ep able the push alerts so you can get breaking news updates. the couple at the center of a kidnapping vallejo police once called a hoax took to social media to share what they continue to endure. >> in september matthew muller pleaded guilty to kidnapping

denise huskins. denise and her boyfriend were preparing to deliver victim impact statements but now will have to wait a bit longer. melanie woodrow is in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: the sentencing has now been moved to march, two years after the kidnapping. despite the fact that he pleaded guilty and vallejo police apologized to denise and aaron in letters, the couple says they continue to be harassed. kidnapping victim denise huskins says in the new year, her past continues to haunt her. are you that horrible, lying woman who faked her own kidnapping, reads part of a stranger's message huskins posted to facebook. the message threatened physical violence and is too vulgar to show here in its entirety. vallejo police initially called the kidnapping a hoax. >> miss huskins has plundered valuable resources away from our community. >> reporter: but police got it wrong. in september, matthew muller pleaded guilty to huskins' kidnapping. after reading the stranger's

message, huskins said she went into what she calls a ptsd episode of terror, writing all i did was survive and i was criminalized for it. we are trying to do the right thing and let the system do its job, but here we are starting our new year hoping for a more positive future but confronted positive futith hate and ignora. on his page, her boyfriend, aaron quinn, writes denise endured unimaginable horrors. nevertheless, she conducts herself with love and grace. she's my favorite person and unquestionably my hero. according to court documents, muller's sentencing was pushed back to march because he needed additional time to prepare. huskins and quinn will speak at muller's sentencing. in a letter recently submitted to the judge, a man who says he knew muller in the marine corps writes i have always felt that matthew muller was a round peg, struggling to fit into a square hole. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. family and friends of a couple who disappeared after leaving for big sur before christmas are increasingly

worried today. owe 85ia hannah gonzalez and brian fernandez were last seen in north hollywood. olivia's sister got a text message saying the couple was about two hours from big sur. three hours later both brian and olivia's phones were off. ten days later, there's still no word from them. flyers have been passed out asking for help in finding the two. a 19-year-old driver is facing felony dui charges after a deadly car crash in santa rosa. police say the teen was intoxicated when she plowed her car into a tree on mountain hawk drive near branch owl place around 11:00 last night. 18-year-old mi kala costeca who was in the front passenger seat died at the scene. the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries an then placed under arrest. two people are in the hospital after their car crashed in vallejo today. this happened when the car exited from interstate 80 onto westbound highway 37 around 10:00 this morning. fire crews carefully removed the two people inside.

both had suffered life-threatening injuries. the cause of the crash under investigation. the road appeared to be slick but it was not raining at the time of the accident. a 15-year-old north bay man is in jail after police say he shot another man in the chest with a flare gun. it happened during a fight at a sausalito laund romatlaundromat. brian hagan attacked the victim and then took off. officers found him nearby at a marina. the two know each other. the victim is expected to be okay. bail is set at $50,000. a dog in florida mauled three people and went on a rampage against police after the animal was dressed in a sweater that he apparently did not like. the pit bull mix named scar face, bit the 52-year-old woman who put the sweater on him. it then attacked her husband, who tried pulling the dog off of her. then the couple's 22-year-old son was attacked. he tried stabbing the dog in the head and the neck. police used a tranquilizer gun, a taser and bean bag gun on the

dog before finally catching it. a lyft driver in southern california was viciously attacked over a parking space. a driver stopped at a gas station in santa ana friday so that her customer could make a purchase. a man yelled at her for the way she parked. the driver admits she parked crookedly. she apologized an moved her car but the man continued his threatening behavior. >> turned around and saw that he was backing up. i thought he may be backing up into my car because he was being so irrationale. >> why would i want to take you? >> are you videoing me? >> ow! >> she said the man punched out of one of her teeth. detectives are looking into the attack and have asked that gas station for their surveillance footage. a day off turned into a day of cleaning up as abc 7 news showed you yesterday. a main break sent water and gravel down a hill and into homes and businesses. 43 customers were affected. today restoration crews and homeowners were busy cleaning up

and assessing the damage. east bay mud crews replaced ten feet of pipe and said corrosion or ground movement may be to blame for the water main break. coming up, the niners are officially searching for new top brass. >> i apologize for a 2-14 season. >> what owner jed york wants in a new head coach and general manager. plus the illness on the rise in colorado. it was likely caused by legalized pot. and the house hunters who have no interest in buying. they're breaking in and doing much more than just stealing. let's take a look at traffic at 4:10 on a monday afternoon. as you can see, a lot of people have the day off so pretty light in san francisco on the skyway. both directions looking really good at this hour.

2-14 team. >> today, tomorrow, whenever. >> reporter: inside we had jed york, whose family did own the team, explaining his reasons for firing trent baalke and chip kelly but not firing himself. >> i own this football team. you don't dismiss owners. >> reporter: what jed york said today sounded a lot like last year after he fired jim tomsula. >> this isn't acceptable to me. it's not. like our fans deserve better than this. >> reporter: and it sounded like the year before that after he fired jim harbaugh. >> i can't look backwards. we need to look forward and doing everything we can to get this team back. >> reporter: by instilling a winning culture, he said, by hiring a general manager and head coach on the same page. with pages from this year's playbooks in trash cans in the locker room, one can only wonder who he will hire and from where. >> everybody is [ bleep ] off. everybody is embarrassed. but, again, he's the boss.

the workman who took the talent and put it together. no! harbaugh was the guy with the secret sauce. he was the one with the magic. he was the guy that created the winning culture. they were riding piggyback on harbaugh, not the other way around. they still haven't figured it out. the niners have gotten worse every single day since jim harbaugh left the building. jim tomsula was an embarrassment. chip never had a chance. my concern going forward is that jed has shown he's not capable of hiring the right people. he does not know what to be looking for here. what the niners should be doing is hiring a veteran nfl name with credibility and have that person first select your general manager, then the coach. they said today they're not even sure what order they're going to hire in. again a mistake. jed's job should be writing checks and staying out of the way. that's it. instead, again, he said he's not sure whether the coach or the gm will be hired first. this is history repeating itself. it's just the same cycle over

and over. maybe the niners do get lucky and find the right people. but when you're going on four head coaches in four years, that's a failure of ownership. that's at the very top. that's where the problem is. but as jed in one of his most honest moments said today, owners do not get dismissed. owners get to keep owning. so we'll see how it plays out. but this is not that desirable a job. this and buffalo are the two least desirable openings out of six presently in the nfl. so good luck. let's hope they get it right this time. meanwhile the raiders -- >> would you outline that and send it to the 49ers? >> listen, we've been saying the same thing for how many years already. they don't want to listen to me. i wasn't born into the family. you can watch the silver and black kick off wild card right here on abc 7. the raiders traveling to houston to take on the texans. that's saturday, 1:30 p.m. right here on abc 7. all right, checking on some other news, crab may soon be off the menu in the bay area as our

fishermen's strike is affecting supply. abc 7 news was at pier 47 as fishermen gathered to discuss a work stoppage north of bodega bay. fishermen in san francisco and half moon bay have decided to stop crabbing as a sign of solidarity. antonelli's fish market have run out of crash and are cancelling orders. some doctors in colorado say the legalization of marijuana is leading to a rise of an uncommon illness. it's a syndrome called chs. emergency room doctors are seeing an increase which can be caused by consuming large amounts of marijuana. >> now we're seeing more people who are smoking marijuana heavily and we're seeing they're having this cyclic vomiting. we're huputting the two and two together and it's the marijuana use causing this nausea and vomiting. >> doctors say too much is not a good thing. marijuana advocates don't

recommend large amounts but stand by what they say are the medical benefits of cannabis. well, los angeles is considering a ban on adults at city parks if they aren't accompanied by children. l.a. councilmember mitchell ferrell proposed the measure. critics say it's an overreach of government to make it illegal to be an adult in a public space. several bay area parks do require adults to have children present. spencer is back with a look at a very wet weekend. >> we may be required to have umbrellas present the rest of this week. it's going to be pouring sometimes. here's a live look at doppler 7 hd. we have pockets of right rain and showers scattered across the bay area and we'll see the rain become more widespread and less scattered as we get into the nighttime hours. check out this stun viewing from our sister tower camera looking out over san francisco. you can see the clouds getting lower, darker and thicker.

it's currently right around 50 degrees, give or take a degree, in san francisco, oakland, mountain view, san jose, gilroy and half moon bay. this is the view from our east bay hills camera, looking at clouds getting thicker. it's 45 in santa rosa, napa 51, 50 in novato, 49 at fairfield, concord 52 and 47 at livermore. here's our exploratorium camera looking out over the bay and these are your forecast features. we'll see scattered showers with low snow levels tonight. snow levels down to about 2500 feet, maybe a little higher. heavy rain and wind are expected tomorrow and we'll see unsettled weather through the next seven days. that means likelihood of rain. here's the storm impact scale which indicates tomorrow's storm developing overnight will be a moderate storm producing moderate to heavy rainfall. looks like commuting is going to be challenginchallenging, espec late commute tomorrow. we expect half an inch to 2 inches of rainfall across the bay yar from this storm. here's the forecast animation.

by 5:00 tomorrow morning as the morning commute begins, we'll see rain becoming a bit more widespread. generally light to moderate at that point. and then by midday we'll see the rain becoming much heavier, much more widespread. these areas of yellow and orange indicate pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall and that will be the pattern right on into the evening hours. so again the commute tomorrow evening will be a very challenging one. the rain continues into wednesday morning. probably less intense than tomorrow evening's rain but pretty widespread and pretty wet until at least midday wednesday before it starts to taper off a bit. it's going to be windy tomorrow, especially in the afternoon hours. look for gusts generally between 20 and 30 miles per hour. we'll see the winds taper off late tomorrow night. now, let's move ahead to rainfall estimates. by 11:00 tomorrow night we expect rainfall totals to range from about 0.7 down in san jose, over an inch in san francisco and the heavier higher totals up north. 2.33 at santa rosa, 2 inches in

novato. in the sierra a winter weather advisory is in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morning. we expect 5 to 10 inches of snow. gusty over the ridges, chain restrictions likely. then we have a winter weather warning from 10:00 tomorrow morning until 4:00 thursday morning. whiteout conditions are likely over the ridges. winds gusting over 60 miles per hour. by 11:00 wednesday evening we expect 1 to 2 feet of snow generally, maybe more as the snow continues into thursday. overnight tonight look for low temperatures in the low to mid-40s for the most part and our rain chances over the next seven days nearly 100% for most of the period, except only 30% on thursday and about 50% on friday. speaking of friday, we'll skip ahead and show you a little more forecast animation. wet weather saturday and sunday all the way through the weekend. it could be even wetter than tomorrow's storm. so here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. a very wet seven days lie ahead. the only day we might have dry

and his incoming white house press secretary sean spicer on "fox & friends" monday with this clarification. >> he is privy to information that nobody else is. but what i think what he is driving at is the fact that there doesn't seem to be conclusive evidence within the intelligence community. >> reporter: but 17 u.s. intelligence agencies concluded russia was behind the hacking and the top democrat on the house intelligence committee says the evidence is as good as it gets. >> if he's going to have any credibility as president, he needs to stop talking this way. >> reporter: trump's team unwavering, instead questioning the harshness of president obama's recent sanctions against russia, closing two diplomatic retreats and evicting dozens of russian diplomats. spicer now suggesting that was politically motivated, despite some fellow republicans saying the punishment doesn't go far enough. >> we will be working for much tougher sanctions against russia. >> reporter: now, all of this as we learned the russians may have

also targeted the power grid in vermont. malware linked to russian hackers was found there, but right now there is no evidence that the hackers succeeded. live in new york, i'm elizabeth hur for abc 7 news. back to you. the russian hacking isn't the only topic on trump's mind. we understand it's been another busy day for him on twitter. >> reporter: this is true. trump has been weighing in on a range of topics, including the murder rate in chicago. he's still talking about the election also, tweeting that the media outlets said that he was going to lose and he did not and lastly, he also weighed in on reports that north korea was working on developing long-range missiles that could reach the u.s. and he tweeted it won't happen. so, yes, another busy day on twitter for trump. >> thank you, elizabeth. well, president obama will speak to the nation for the last time as president next week. the white house announced today the president will give his farewell address on january 10th.

that's a week from tomorrow. the president won't deliver his address from the white house. instead he'll give it from his home city of chicago. that's also where his presidential library will be located. new details about the suspected shooter in the turkey nightclub massacre that killed at least 39 people. authorities say they have the man's fingerprints. they hope to have his identity soon. and that would help the manhunt to capture him. >> turkish police have released these new pictures of the suspect still on the loose, with isis calling him one of their soldiers. the terror group also claiming the attack was in response to turkish military operations against them in syria. the scene was a nightclub in istanbul, packed with 600 revelers ringing in the new year. and then at 1:15 a.m., security cameras show the man firing outside the club, then storming inside. the shooting lasted seven terrifying minutes. >> we heard something like a gun

shooting. after three, four seconds -- >> reporter: authorities believe the suspect then changed his clothes to blend in with the crowd before getting away. >> all i can say is it's massive tragedy. this is very unfortunate. >> reporter: american tourist jacob raak among the dozens injured returning home to delaware this morning. he told reporters he survived the attack by playing dead. >> i was with nine people. seven of us were shot. >> he's lucky to get out of there. turkish police say right now they're questioning eight people in connection with the attack, but the gunman is not among them and their search for him is continuing. at least 60 inmates are dead after the bloodiest prison riot in brazil in years. public security officials are calling it a massacre. this was the scene outside the prison as family members of the inmates and guards tried to get

a new year means a new minimum wage for many bay area cities and still more increases are on the way. amy hollyfield takes a look at

the issue and the impact. >> reporter: even as the minimum wage goes up across the bay area, the debate over what to pay still rages on. there is support for those who will be making more money. >> it's absolutely necessary. we have so many of our staff that work at the health clinic that rely on us paying a salary to live. >> reporter: there's also concern for those who will be paying it. >> i also know it's hard for employers too. they have to pay rents and there's an issue on both sides. >> reporter: here's a look at the new minimum wages in 2017 across the bay area. san jose is now paying a minimum of $10.50 an hour. it's $12 in san leandro and san mateo, $12.55 in oakland. >> i really think that they're hurting small businesses. it's killing us. >> reporter: insurance company owner reuben rayna says everything is getting more expensive. this is going to force him to shut down one of his locations.

>> i mean i'm happy for these people. everybody needs a break at the same time. but give the business owners a break too as well taxwise and so forth because we're just getting nailed on it. >> reporter: cities are trying to help business owners by gradually increasing the minimum wage. many cities, like san jose, will see another increase in july and another one next january. one bottom line everyone can agree on, life here is expensive. >> someone that makes a salary that's not minimum wage even, it's hard to live in the bay area. so yeah, the cost of living is so high. >> reporter: in san jose, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. in france a new law that took effect in the new year gives workers the right not to check their e-mails during off hours. this law applies to companies with 50 or more employees throughout the country. companies cannot punish workers if they ignore e-mail and other communications when they're off the clock. lawmakers say that law was implemented as a way for companies to respect their

workers' work/life balance. it is time for ask finney. michael finney is here to answer questions sent to him. we start off with some great questions. our first comes from barbara from fremont. she asked our mail is delivered at random times, sometimes not until 8:00 p.m. sometimes it's difrd on sundays. is that overtime? we've also experienced mail theft. should this be our future expectation of the postal service? >> look, there's a lot going on at the postal service. the usps does deliver on sunday now. their high end, they have to compete with everyone else, google delivery and everybody else, so they're delivering on sundy now. as for the late delivery, you're probably getting that because everybody was scrambling during the holiday season in order to keep up. when it comes to theft of mail, this tends to happen street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. when the bad guys figure out no one is around, they'll come through and rip you off. it's important that you report it to the local police who will

then tell you to report it to the postal service. but police need to know so they're keeping an eye out for it. >> a viewer from daly city asks is it worth it to install a solar panel on our house? >> boy, that's a tough one. if you're talking solely about your carbon footprint, then yes, it is a great idea. if you're talking about saving money on your electricity in much of the bay area, you're going to need at least a ten-year horizon, unless you're somewhere like san francisco that is still offering some rebates. so you have to take a look at the rebates, take a look where your house is, what kind of shadowing you have. if you live out towards the delta, you're going to pay it off very quick. if you live somewhere that's kind of shady with trees, it's going to take more time. so it's really house by house. >> depends if you're going to be in that house for a long time. >> that's what you really need to look at. if you're going to be there ten years or more, go for it. kesie asks i just got out of i contract with my current cell

are teaming up to launch the bachelor fantasy league. the official fantasy game experience for the new season. it's available now on abc.com and the espn fantasy app. last year we told you about how he leagues work and the people who say reality tv is more than just a spectator sport. during the day, these women work together at an east bay health care business, but on this night, they're bonding over "the bachelor." >> a little trash talking. >> and they aren't just watching, they're playing along using an online game site called fantasy 4 reality. >> we're judging people's form, how do they go into the game, what kind of strategy they have. much like how we went into factacy football. >> i was secretly really excited to be a part of it. >> fantasy 4 reality is one of several websites offering bachelor fantasy leagues. >> here is where they have all the different points.

>> each player drafts a team of bachelorettes and then gets points based on how they behave, good or bad. you get just ten points for kissing or crying, but lots more for juicier stuff like sneaking over to the bachelor's suite or being sent home early. >> i literally did not see that coming. >> fantasy 4 reality is run by a couple guys in chicago. first it was just for family an friends. then about a year and a half ago, the game caught fire. >> so when i first started, there was like 5, 10 people. now we're in the tens of thousands. >> the team also runs fantasy leagues for other reality shows, but "the bachelor" is by far the most popular. >> i think that the next couple years we'll see it grow dramatically. >> they end of each episode, matt enters all the points and the site automatically updates each person's score. >> you don't have to do a lot of the leg work. >> you have to watch and drink a little wine. >> and it's not just women

and enter the home. >> reporter: police say the burglars have taken things you might expect like electronics and televisions but have also targeted home decor, even taking picture frames off the walls. >> i heard one house, they actually slept in the house, left smoke butts, smotole televisions, appliances, things like that. >> reporter: this realtor knows four agents who experienced the break-ins. keep alarms activated even if the residents have moved out. police even suggest hiring a house sitter and scheduling viewings by appointment only. >> we've heard of agents in other areas reporting these kinds of incidents. i think it's critical that all homeowners have to be on guard for any kind of break-in or criminal activity. >> reporter: livermore police are now processing fingerprints to track down the suspects. i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. thank you for joining us for abc 7 news at 4:00 today.

forced to turn around. good evening, everybody, i'm larry beil in for dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz in for kristen sze. thank you for joining us. now four hours into that flight an unruly passenger threatened that his seatmates -- threatened his seatmates and dared the flight crew to turn the flight around and that flight crew did just that. we'll get more on this story in just a few moments but first we want to turn our attention to the weather. >> yes, and all those predictions about snow in the bay area this week. they were right on the money. highway 29 in napa county very slippery this morning. this video was shot along highway 29 at the summit of mount st. helena in napa county. santa clara county got its share of snow as well. abc 7 news was at mt. hamilton. it was cold and slushy there. the lake observatory was closed. caltrans also closed the road to the summit, but some people hiked up to the snow just to get a feel for it.
