american jake raak who said he pretended to be dead. >> it's a massive tragedy. this is very unfortunate. >> reporter: we met an 18-year-old who was at the club with six of his friends. he told us there was chaos as constant gunshots rang out. people stampeding, crushing each other. many jumping into the waters next to the club. isis has now claimed responsibility for the attack saying it was their soldier that carried it out because of turkey's military actions against the group in syria as well as the fact that this club was hosting what they called christians celebrating their holiday. the sad irony is almost all of those killed here were muslims. alex, thank you. there are new details in another isis attack. a suicide bombing in baghdad that killed dozens. they detonated a pickup truck at

building until a minute after midnight. but once inside the hard work was done. the safes were all open. quite a heist there. a man allegedly stole a flatbed tow truck and got more than he suspected. it came with a police car. police spotted the stolen truck and gave chase. but one of their cruisers became hooked on the truck. the police car with the officer inside was dragged across the state line into new york. the suspect faces charges in two states now. and police in buffalo are facing some intense questioning after using a controversial method to subdue a suspect. the cops say the man was wielding a butcher knife and threatening officers with deadly force. it was caught on video. linsey davis has more. >> reporter: an investigation is underway after this video was posted on facebook live of a police officer intentionally plowing into a man with his suv. at first the suv reverses then accelerates forward. the man tries to run away but is rammed by the suv. it happened in buffalo, new york on saturday afternoon.

trying to figure out how someone flew in a plane's cargo hold. those are some of the top stories on this tuesday, january 3rd. we say good morning to you on this tuesday morning. breaking news, the deadly extreme weather into the south that claimed at least four lives. >> you can see the system is sweeping up into georgia and the carolinas and across the florida panhandle into other than georgia. >> four people were killed in southern alabama. a tree crashed into a home. that storm system tore through texas and louisiana yesterday knocking over trees and damaging buildings. we have more. >> reporter: these are the winds, some near 60 miles per hour that tore through cities south of dallas cutting the lights.

drivers taking cover at this gas station hit by falling pieces. >> we just got hit by roof. >> reporter: here in mississippi the same severe weather system brought six inches of rain in a few short hours to parts of alabama. >> it is not passable. >> reporter: the jackson, alabama police department says they're dealing with a flood emergency. they're now having to rescue drivers who didn't listen. >> this is a prime example as to why not be out. because we have a vehicle submerged in water at this time. >> reporter: the rain and screaming winds brought traffic at airports to a stop. this family was stuck in the sky circling houston. >> we circled a long time and dealt with him crying longer on the plane. >> reporter: in pensacola, more than 30 homes were hit over the weekend. the winds knocked down large trees. >> we have a big dent right here.

>> reporter: over houses and cars. >> abc news, atlanta. and as steve mentioned, there is more severe weather ahead for the south. >> our folks at accuweather have been tracking it. good morning. one quick note about those severe storms. we're expecting for another round of that. understand, we have much cold air that's pushing behind this, but ahead of that boundary, warm air in florida and moisture that's also in abundance. the combination of the two especially at this time of the year poses a real challenge because of the diverseness between the air masses. we're looking for showers and flooding going into northern florida. this is the zone of severe thunderstorms possibly supercells only a step below tornadoes and widespread flooding and rain causes flooding. cold temperatures dropping 10 to 20 below normal. >> all right.

our thanks to paul. we have other breaking news overnight. the failure of customs systems at some of the country's busiest airports. >> they resulted in long lines just as so many travelers were returning from holiday vacations. airports were affected in new york, south florida, and washington dulles. >> there were also problems in boston. passengers weren't thrilled. >> we're just trying to get home. a six hour flight and stand in line for almost two hours. they herd you into one line and then another and another. it was just chaos. >> there was no system to who had to wait. >> at least when you're on your way to vacation, you're looking forward. when you're on your way home, you want to get home. >> and these are international travelers. they've been on flights at least four to five hours. >> and the outage was four hours.

officials say national security databases were not compromised, and they don't believe the outage was malicious. now to washington d.c. the congress is getting sworn in and the house has a controversial vote on its hand. the house republicans voted to gut the office of congressional ethics sparking outrage from democrats and watchdog groups. it was created in 2008 to investigate episodes of misconduct. it's now under the house ethics committee run by lawmakers. the full house is set to vote on the change later today. and president obama is heading to the hill tomorrow to meet with democrats in an effort to shore up his signature healthcare law. they're hoping to find a way to keep republicans from repealing the law. nancy pelosi is hoping people take a look at how it improved their lives. donald trump was busy on

twitter. he chimed in on everything from chicago's staggering murder rate to north korea's potential missile launch. mary bruce has more. >> reporter: after ringing in the new year after his annual bash in florida, the president-elect is back home in trump tower and back on twitter. weighing in on the surging murder rate in chicago. tweeting if mayor can't do it, he must ask for federal help. a record setting 762 murders last year. with 18 days until his inauguration, trump's taking another victory lap tweeting various media outlets and pundits say i was going to lose the election. wrong. it all came together in the last week. and he's complaining about a new book on the election saying they used the worst cover photo of me. the big question, what will trump reveal about the russian hacking? >> i also know things that other people don't know. and so they cannot be sure of the situation. >> what do you know? >> you'll find out on tuesday or

mary bruce, abc news, the white house. more than 100 pieces of debris may be linked to a jet that vanished. they have been searching the lake for bodies as well as the plane since the weekend. authorities confirmed a bag that washed ashore sunday belonged to one of the passengers. six people were on board that plane including the pilot, his wife, and their two sons. in texas now four children are dead after an accidental chemical gas poisoning. they say a chemical reaction occurred when one person tried to wash off a pesticide that was sprayed under the house. monday night neighbors gathered to remember the victims. officials say six others who were hospitalized are not out of the woods yet. a reality tv star used a gun to scare off three people she claims were trespassing at her home. it was captured on security cameras. kenya moore says she has a right to protect herself. moore, a former miss usa is offering $1,000 reward to anyone who can identify the alleged trespassers.

and check this out. that's a leopard. it injured at least 20 people during this incident. eventually wildlife officials subdued the animal. the u.s. financial markets reopened after the weekend. they ended an otherwise outstanding year with the dow short of the 20,000 mark. the dollar ended the year strong and appears to be staying that way heading into the new year. and spacex is hoping to start 2017 on a better note. the company plans to resume flights as early as sunday with planned launches for several satellite launches. the company says it knows now why one of the rockets exploded in september. and they figured out how to prevent it from happening again. the launch needs approval from the federal aviation administration.

on new year's eve hear what the pop diva is saying about who really dropped the ball in times square. it's tuesday, january 3rd. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this morning. >> good morning, hi. >> good morning, how are you? >> happy new year. >> happy new year to you. >> i was so excited so start things off. are you okay today? >> i'm okay. >> we're starting with breaking news for travelers out there entering the u.s. getting a bit of a nightmare at some of the country's busiest airports. here are some time lapsed videos showing a long line of passengers. >> and heated exchanges in miami. it serves more international flights than any other in the u.s. it was a scene of chaos. the result of what's called a

nationwide customs processing systems outage. >> other airports were washington, dulles, and fort lauderdale. and other others. customs agents had to access national security databases and all travelers were screened during that outage. >> what happened here? i spoke earlier with our aviation analyst. >> reporter: the problem here is that everything gets delayed because you're not just looking at one computer screen. there's a delicately interlaced system. when it works it gives them a tremendous amount of information of who is on the flight, who is coming in, who is in front of them. when they last entered, all these different pieces of information, and without that interlaced system, they have to get certain parts of it produced on paper, for instance, the list of people inbound on a particular flight or from other sources, so they're probably not having any problems with doing

all the normal things that are done. it just takes twice as long at least, sometimes three to four times as long. it gets to be a pretty big deal if you have a global industry and are used to zipping through using the global entry machines. those won't be working and so now everybody is going through the regular lines which, themselves are delayed. you could be looking at an additional hour or two before you get out of the airport. this means that anybody with a domestic connection may well be in trouble. the global entry is one of those systems that has to depend on the main interlaced computer capabilities of cbp. if they go down, if the whole system goes down to any extent, the machines that give you the capability of coming in with global entry will probably go down too. right now this is guess work. we don't know for sure, but more than likely the inconvenience was not only for regular passengers going through the

regular chutes but also those with the enhanced inspection programs, global entry being one, to where they can kind of clear themselves. so far there's no indication that sabotage could be involved. of course, until the final post mortem is done, it's premature to declare it, but more than likely, this being a very closed system, it's highly unlikely there's a system with sabotage or somebody accessing the database from outside. the fact that this is one of the busiest travel days of the year including international travel also probably augers well for the fact that the system can get overloaded or at least has been used to a great extent at a higher level than you would normally have during a normal week. consequently if there's a time for it to break down, not only is this the most convenient, but it's probably the most likely. >> our thanks to john nantz. >> can you imagine?

they say this is the face of the killer. he's seen getting out of taxi after the shooting that left 39 people dead. they have fingerprints and say they're close to identifying him. at least 12 people have now been arrested in raids, and isis has claimed responsibility calling the attack a response to turkish action against fighters in syria. donald trump is insisting north korea won't have a missile capable of reaching the united states. he says it won't happen. it happens after kim jong-un said preparations have reached the final stage, hinting that a test was imminent. and the president-elect's team is walking back his comments when he suggested he was about to reveal new information on the russian hacking allegations. sean spicer said when trump mentioned knowing things other people do not know, he was simply talking about sharing his own conclusions.

seeped into the mobile home after an occupant sprayed the pesticide to kill rats and mice beneath the house. the family members complained about the smell. the man told officials he sprayed it with water causing a chemical reaction creating that deadly result. when they arrived, rescue crews smelled the chemical. nine firefighters hospitalized as a precaution. >> for them to go all at once is a tragedy that hit home. >> reporter: it is one of the most commonly used agricultural pesticides and it's one of the most common causes of poisoning. unfortunately, there's no known anecdote. matt, thank you. now to sports and a somewhat unusual coaching move. less than a week before college football's national title game.

motor vehicle but did not install it. and never warned users of the potential dangers. >> apple could have prevented the death of this five-year-old girl on christmas eve if this technology had been used. >> reporter: we reached out to apple for comment, but the company does not comment on pending litigation and has not filed a legal response to the lawsuit. >> i believe they'll take the position that to the extent anyone is responsible for the injuries caused by this lawsuit, it's the actual driver of the car and not their product. >> reporter: linsey davis, abc news, new york. the attorney for the driver released a statement saying in part, the family is confident after all the facts are brought out in court that it will be shown that the use of a cellular device did not contribute, and he did not commit a crime. it was simply an accident. >> a lot of people will be watching that case. coming up in the next half hour, the midair face off between an airline passenger and the crew that took an ugly turn.

alex was right there. >> reporter: new images of the man being hunted by turkish security forces. the chilling video of the suspected terrorist who hasn't been publicly identified. walking through a central square in istanbul, at one point smirking. he's believed to be the one who started firing in a nightclub on new year's. he then raced inside and over the next seven minutes coldly murdered at least 39 people. in this image he appears to be taking off his jacket. sources telling us they believe he changed in order to help in his escape. he's later seen wearing lighter clothing. then they suspect he limped in order to blend in. from the club appearing to take a taxi under half a mile away. he walks away slowly. in his wake, a massacre. dozens were wounded including an american jake raak who said he

pretended to be dead. he left instant bull. >> it's a massive tragedy. this is very unfortunate. >> reporter: we met an 18-year-old who was at the club with six of his friends. he told us there was chaos as constant gunshots rang out. people stampeding, crushing each other. many jumping into the waters next to the club. isis has now claimed responsibility for the attack saying it was their soldier that carried it out because of turkey's military actions against the group in syria as well as the fact that this club was hosting what they called christians celebrating their holiday. the sad irony is almost all of those killed here were muslims. alex, thank you. there are new details in another isis attack. a suicide bombing in baghdad that killed dozens. they detonated a pickup truck at

a market packed with day laborers. the bomber pretended to be someone looking to hire the workers. back in this country donald trump is weighing in on chicago's staggering murder rate, the worst in two decades after the city ended the year with 762 homicides trump tweeted if the mayor can't combat the violence, he must ask for federal help. he's referring to president obama's former chief of staff. and house republicans voted to gut the house of congressional ethics. the independent ethics office was created in 2008 to investigate allegations of misconduct by lawmakers. it now falls under the house ethics committee run by lawmakers the full house is expected to vote on the change today when the new congress gets sworn in.

and travelers arriving from overseas were greeted by long lines at u.s. airports because of a customs computer outage. it could not have come as a worse time with so many passengers returning home from vacation. airports across the country were affected. agents instead used alternative procedures to screen those entering the u.s. it took much longer than you usual. they had access to the national security base. so that was maintained. officials say don't they believe it was malicious. computers are online after being offline for four hours. severe storms are tearing across the south. they are being blamed for four deaths in alabama. here in louisiana no one was inside this camper when it was flipped over. possibly by a tornado. no deaths or injuries were reported in louisiana or mississippi. >> the storm system is moving east bringing the potential for more damage as well as misery. >> let's get more from paul.

the safes were all open. quite a heist there. a man allegedly stole a flatbed tow truck and got more than he suspected. it came with a police car. police spotted the stolen truck and gave chase. but one of their cruisers became hooked on the truck. the police car with the officer inside was dragged across the state line into new york. the suspect faces charges in two states now. and police in buffalo are facing some intense questioning after using a controversial method to subdue a suspect. the cops say the man was wielding a butcher knife and threatening officers with deadly force. it was caught on video. linsey davis has more. >> reporter: an investigation is underway after this video was posted on facebook live of a police officer intentionally plowing into a man with his suv. at first the suv reverses then accelerates forward. the man tries to run away but is rammed by the suv.

it happened in buffalo, new york on saturday afternoon. sheila woodard shot the video on her cell phone. >> i thought they were going to either taze him or tackle him. >> reporter: an attorney says there was another officer whose life was being threatened by the suspect who was wielding a 12-inch butcher knife. >> the officer perceived a risk, and it was unorthodox, but it worked. there's always other options, but buffalo at least as of when this happened does not carry tasers. >> reporter: police say the man had suicidal tendencies. they have not identified any of the men involved. the police officer is on the job. the man hit is said to have suffered an ankle injury. now to iowa and a high school kid who lost his wallet and has now been reunited with it four years later. >> four years later. here's the wallet.
