back to work and back to school tuesday. that breaking news, though. severe weather blamed for at least five deaths in south. >> a tree crushed a mobile home in southern alabama, killing four people inside. three other people escaped without injury. >> we want to show you the live radar. the severe storm system moving eastward. throughout is -- the south. across alabama and florida and into the panhandle. tennessee, georgia, and the carolinas not spared. janai norman with more. >> reporter: tornadoes, flooding, and deadly storms. sweeping across the southeast. >> we're just asking everybody to stay in. >> reporter: blaring winds, upwards of 60 miles per hour, blasted through cities south of dallas, hurling debris and tearing down powerlines. >> we have a big dent right here. >> reporter: in parts of mississippi, the winds overturning a tractor trailer and ripping up this roof. the same system packed six inches of rain. heavy downpours turned yards into ponds. >> i want you to see this.

it is completely submerged. it is not passable. >> reporter: and drenched parts of alabama facing a flood emergency. law enforcement asked residents to stay inside. and were forced to rescue some of those who didn't listen. >> this is a fine example as to why not be out. because then we have a vehicle submerged in water at this time. >> reporter: in rehobeth, alabama, four people were killed when a tree fell on their mobile home. the threat for tornadoes lingered over southwest georgia and the florida panhandle, where authorities found a car partially submerged in water and say a man drowned nearby in floodwaters. janai norman, abc news, washington. >> janai, thank you. let's get the complete forecast from accuweather's paul williams. who is tracking everything for us. paul, good morning. >> good morning, diane, kendis. those same tornadoes and severe storms now shifting and beginning to ravage the carolina coast. we're looking for gusty thunderstorms in north carolina, south carolina, going into portions of georgia. but really begin to lean more

toward the north and possibly targeting central portions of virginia. please keep in mind, we're looking for another round of strong winds. between 50 to 70-mile-per-hour winds. and then, toward the north, more cold weather sinking from the north to the south. kendis? diane? >> thank you, paul. in the meantime, also breaking overnight. thousands of airline travelers stuck in long lines. they arrived here in the u.s. only to be delayed by a customs computer outage. that meant these long lines snaking through many of the nation's busiest airports. irritating travelers. as you can see there at the heart of that video there. they just wanted to get home. after their long holiday trips. chaos and backups at airports across the country. from l.a.x. to new york's jfk. frustrated flyers. jammed into long lines. >> the lines were completely chaotic. there was no system to who got through fast and who had to wait two hours. >> reporter: overnight, passengers, many of whom are coming off flights of ten-plus hours, waiting several more hours to get through customs.

returning now to our breaking news. deadly storms across the south. this is new video just in from georgia, where heavy rain and winds have clearly take an toll. many trees have been knocked over or have fallen over. they're damaging dozens of homes and other buildings as well. >> as you can imagine, roads will be wet in the southeast, ohio valley, mid-atlantic. slippery roads in the northern midwest and run into snow as well in the western mountains. if you're flying, airport delays are most likely in washington, philadelphia, new york, boston, and san francisco. while we're talking about fly, united airlines is looking into what could have been a fatal incident. a baggage handler got trapped inside a plane's cargo hold. zblots of questions still need to be answered. shortly after the flight took off, airport workers in charlotte realized a baggage
