back to work and back to school tuesday. that breaking news, though. severe weather blamed for at least five deaths in south. >> a tree crushed a mobile home in southern alabama, killing four people inside. three other people escaped without injury. >> we want to show you the live radar. the severe storm system moving eastward. throughout is -- the south. across alabama and florida and into the panhandle. tennessee, georgia, and the carolinas not spared. janai norman with more. >> reporter: tornadoes, flooding, and deadly storms. sweeping across the southeast. >> we're just asking everybody to stay in. >> reporter: blaring winds, upwards of 60 miles per hour, blasted through cities south of dallas, hurling debris and tearing down powerlines. >> we have a big dent right here. >> reporter: in parts of mississippi, the winds overturning a tractor trailer and ripping up this roof. the same system packed six inches of rain. heavy downpours turned yards into ponds. >> i want you to see this.

it is completely submerged. it is not passable. >> reporter: and drenched parts of alabama facing a flood emergency. law enforcement asked residents to stay inside. and were forced to rescue some of those who didn't listen. >> this is a fine example as to why not be out. because then we have a vehicle submerged in water at this time. >> reporter: in rehobeth, alabama, four people were killed when a tree fell on their mobile home. the threat for tornadoes lingered over southwest georgia and the florida panhandle, where authorities found a car partially submerged in water and say a man drowned nearby in floodwaters. janai norman, abc news, washington. >> janai, thank you. let's get the complete forecast from accuweather's paul williams. who is tracking everything for us. paul, good morning. >> good morning, diane, kendis. those same tornadoes and severe storms now shifting and beginning to ravage the carolina coast. we're looking for gusty thunderstorms in north carolina, south carolina, going into portions of georgia. but really begin to lean more

toward the north and possibly targeting central portions of virginia. please keep in mind, we're looking for another round of strong winds. between 50 to 70-mile-per-hour winds. and then, toward the north, more cold weather sinking from the north to the south. kendis? diane? >> thank you, paul. in the meantime, also breaking overnight. thousands of airline travelers stuck in long lines. they arrived here in the u.s. only to be delayed by a customs computer outage. that meant these long lines snaking through many of the nation's busiest airports. irritating travelers. as you can see there at the heart of that video there. they just wanted to get home. after their long holiday trips. chaos and backups at airports across the country. from l.a.x. to new york's jfk. frustrated flyers. jammed into long lines. >> the lines were completely chaotic. there was no system to who got through fast and who had to wait two hours. >> reporter: overnight, passengers, many of whom are coming off flights of ten-plus hours, waiting several more hours to get through customs.

>> they herd you into one line. then they herd you into another line. then they herd you into another line. it was chaos. >> reporter: u.s. customs and border patrol confirming a computer outage affecting airports nationwide on one of the busiest travel days of the year. abc news aviation analyst john nance. >> the fact that this is one of the busiest travel days of the year, including international travel, also probably augers well for the fact that the system can get overloaded. consequently, if there's going to be a time for it to break down, not only is it the most inconvenient, but probably the most likely. >> reporter: plenty of passenger photos showing the disorder. the luggage at washington-dulles airport piling up. >> this is ridiculous. this is the luggage getting squished. >> reporter: the long lines snaking through the country's busiest airports. in atlanta. and this scene in miami. tempers flaring as people begin to lose patience. some travelers taking it in stride, including carlos. giving a thumbs up with a sea of people behind him.

everyone had a reason to give a thumbs up when the computers finally came back online. after four hours, mind you. the officials say national security databases were not affected. and they don't believe the outage was malicious. police have in evidence this morning in the search for the gunman behind the nightclub massacre in turkey. they say this is the face of the killer. he's seen here walking through istanbul. and then again, getting out of a taxi after the shooting that left 39 people dead. they also have fingerprints. and say they're close to identifying him. at least 12 people have been arrested in raids. and isis has claimed responsibility. calling the attack a response to turkish action against its fighters in syria. and the 115th congress will be sworn in today. it's the most powerful republican-led congress in two decades. here's a live look at the capitol building in washington. where it will all happen. republicans are vowing to unravel eight years of president obama's democratic agenda. starting with repealing and replacing his signature health care law. with a hefty majority in the

house and the senate, the gop is looking to target the tax code, regulation, and rules on the environment. >> but the first agenda is to pay the light bill. >> they're going to. yes, we hope. a little bit of darkness in the shot there. with no advance notice, the house republicans have voted to gut the office of congressional ethics, sparking outrage from democrats and watchdog groups. the independent ethics office was created to investigate allegations of misconduct by lawmakers. but it would now fall under the house ethics committee, which is run by lawmakers. the full house is expected to vote on that change today. donald trump is insisting north korea will not develop a nuclear weapon capable of reaching the united states. trump tweeted, it won't happen. but he didn't clarify exactly what he meant. the post came after kim jong-un said his country is in final stages of preparations for the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. hinting that a test was imminent. still ahead, a baggage handler becomes an accidental stowaway. hear how he called for help

when i came home, i felt alone. my family was around me, but i couldn't talk to them about what i'd seen and what i'd done. i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, but i'm okay. martin luther king jr.: we hold these truths to be self-evident -- that all men are created equal. john f. kennedy: the torch has been passed to a new generation of americans.

sentencing phase of his trial. on wednesday, jury yors will decide if dylann roof will die or spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2015 church massacre. dylann roof will represent himself and his attorneys will serve as stand-by counsel. now to a strange and ultimately deadly tragedy in amarillo, texas. four children died from an accidental pesticide poisoning. neighbors remembered the victims in a candlelight vigil monday night. six others remained hospitalized overnight. after being exposed to the lethal gas. here's what happened. fire officials say a chemical reaction occurred when someone tried to wash off a pesticide that had been sprayed under the house to kill rodents. at least 120 pieces of debris may be connected to the private jet that vanished over lake erie near cleveland last week. multiple recovery teams have been searching the lake for bodies and the plane over the weekend. authorities have confirmed that a bag that washed ashore sunday belonged to one of the plane's passengers. six people were on board the plane, including the pilot, his wife, and two sons.

returning now to our breaking news. deadly storms across the south. this is new video just in from georgia, where heavy rain and winds have clearly take an toll. many trees have been knocked over or have fallen over. they're damaging dozens of homes and other buildings as well. >> as you can imagine, roads will be wet in the southeast, ohio valley, mid-atlantic. slippery roads in the northern midwest and run into snow as well in the western mountains. if you're flying, airport delays are most likely in washington, philadelphia, new york, boston, and san francisco. while we're talking about fly, united airlines is looking into what could have been a fatal incident. a baggage handler got trapped inside a plane's cargo hold. zblots of questions still need to be answered. shortly after the flight took off, airport workers in charlotte realized a baggage

handler had somehow become locked inside. they immediately called the faa which contacted air traffic control at dulles. >> it's going to be an apparent baggage handler locked in the baggage apartment. >> we need a police report. >> they want to make sure the person involved in an employee and not a stowaway. >> we're going to work it as a security incident till we can, i guess, get some confirmation as to who he is even though he's in trade dress for a ramper in charlotte. flight crew doesn't remember seeing him or anything like that. >> the cargo hold luckily was apparently pressurized chrks ray loud him to survive a flight that reached 27,000 feet. and we'll have much more on this invebl story later on "good morning america." at the stroke of midnight new year's eve. mariah carey was trying to figure out what happened. police were watching times square closely.

it is ranining outside. >> really wet. and it's going to get more intense as we head throughout the afternoon and evening. right now, we have some moderate showers on the dunbar bridge around palo alto. so coming out of the snow, could be a little wet right there but you can see light rain all through the morning commute. in fact, it's showing up on our shorer. we'll have light rain becoming heavier around noon. heavy rain and breezy conditions

4:00 and 7:00. how about that commute? >> talk about a reality check. everybody who's been off for a couple weeks, i've got live doppler 7 on top of our traffic maps and there are some heavier areas around fremont just south of there and heading out to the central valley as well. not coming down too hard at the moment but we're already starting to see a line in those cash lanes and you can see that road spray kicking up as well so just slow down and use caution. we'll take a look at some drive times coming up next breaking news out of san francisco. you can see video of the burned objects outside this church near 18th street and south vanis avenue. the fire was set around 1:00 a.m. the items that were burned belonged to a homeless veteran is and howard says he was targeted because he's been trying to stop car blaerz in that area. no injuries there. there is some damage to the church. >> heads if you want you're commuting over the golden gate bridge. prepare for a big back-up.

>> there are only t lanes this morning going southbound. amy is live for us with the issue today at the bridge. amy. >> reporter: hi, good morning. it looks good now, so truly, the early bird is going to get the worm. going to get rewarded. no back-up yet, but we expect that to change and that it should be a rough commute coming from marin into san francisco and that's the direction you're looking at right now. we are in marin county looking into the city. this is the traffic going in and the problem's going to be that they are used to having four lanes during the kmorng commute. this morning, they're only going to have three. here's a look at what's the blame. the movable median barrier is broken. they don't know why. so they can't convert and change the current three lanes to four like they usually can. they hope to have it fixed by this afternoon, so hopefully you'll have a norm evening commute, but what a rude awakening back to real life after all the
