if you're hoping for a wet new year, wish granted. green means rain on live doppler 7 and the heaviest of it is still to come be afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm reggie aqui. we are seeing storm impact a lot of parts of the bay area. here is a live look showing stormy conditions there. plenty of gray sky and look at the rain drops on that lens. the story much the same. probably even a little wetter from this vantage point. more clouds and rainmaking for a click commute.

in the south bay we're seeing some choppy waters in santa cruz. pretty windy no matter where you are. all of this, the rain, wind and threat of more to come making a mess if you're in and out of sfo. you can see storm clouds hovering over the airport. we're seeing hefty delays. tracking all of that and what we can expect from the rest of the storm. >> we're on storm watch for this storm. that's going to get heavier as we head into the afternoon hours. let's take a look at our storm impact scale. this one solid number two. it's moderate because of the moderate to heavy rain and the breezy conditions that will develop this afternoon and linger through the evening and early overnight hours that causes some minor flooding during the even commute. a slim chance of power outages. all three of the bridges there. also the golden gate bridge. look what's heading in from the

west. that's the heavier rain that's going to roll in. 2:00 it's going to be up in north bay. it's going to be breezy with moderate to heavy rain from 4:00 to when it peaks at its heaviest at 8:00. that's going to cause a lot of issues even more than we had during the morning commute. that was pretty tough. >> we had quite a few incident this morning. we're not quite back to full volume as far as traffic is concerned. we have a lot of folks and students off for a few more days. live doppler 7. we have widespread mostly light showers for the midday. we have red on northbound 880 before you get to 23rd. that was caused by an abandoned vehicle. chp working on clearing that. looks great through the bay ridge toll plaza right now. the metering lights turned off be 10:00 this morning. it did fill in for a short time. it's back to looking really

clear for the moment. we are seeing light drops. drive times looking pretty good. slight delays southbound 101 across golden gate. >> thanks so much. the real challenge could come during the afternoon commute when people are getting off of work because we'll see more volume in that rain. abc 7 jessica went to the santa cruz mountains to see how drivers are doing so far. hi. >> reporter: it's raining out here los gatos. the reservoir is filling up quite nicely all the way to the top. i want to show you out here highway 17. you can see cars are moving nicely. we're at bear creek road and they are going pretty fast but the roads are slick and wet. can you tell me how the commute has been for you this morning in the rain? >> a little tougher today. after the last holiday week there's like nobody out here. then all of a sudden everyone is out here and slowly because of the rain.

>> you're fellow drivers are behaving this morning. >> so far so good. once i start work, i'll start getting crash here, crash there. >> reporter: happened on mission boulevard between 680 and 880. chp says the car may have slid and spun off the road. the driver was okay. there were handful of minor crashes in the bay area this morning. steady rain fell in freemont throughout the morning commute. that's where we were earlier. i have a reminder to drivers to be careful in the mt. hamilton area. it's fun to play in but can make driving tough. highway 130 reopened a few hours ago. back out here live in los gatos. it's raining and wet and cold out here with the rain blowing sideways but one beautiful thing about the rain, we have the rainbow out here which we wanted to share with you this mid day. it's beautiful and making it a bit more easy to bear as the

rain moves down. it's trickling in right now. you saw heavier rain earlier. abc 7 news. >> where'll see more later for sure. now to an avalanche warning for the sierra today. this is what it looks right now. this camera at heavily mountain resort. avalanche danger will be high from 4:00 p.m. today until thursday morning. it includes the greater truckee tahoe region. it does not apply to ski areas or mountain corridors. can you believe this? wine country getting some of the most significant snow that it's seen in years. we caught up with one group. they drove an hour to get a glimpse and have a snowfall bight. this is the beginning of a week that's expected to pack quite a punch. you can fire up that abc 7 news app. watch live doppler 7 and track the rain where you live.

enable push alerts to get updates where you happen. the golden gate zipper truck is finally back on track. moments ago we got word that repairs are complete after the vehicle that changes the lane configuration doesn't end up working for the first real commute of 2017. amy is live. this is good news. >> reporter: hi. the bridge got a break today. i just got numbers from the bridge district. they say traffic was down 7 to 8% this morning compared to this day. the last couple of years. maybe because then on the years it fell on a monday, not on a tuesday. maybe everyone got snowed in in tahoe yesterday. whatever the case, it was a lucky break and this lane closure did not cause any huge problems. it had all the elements for a miserable commute. the southbound traffic on the golden gate bridge wasn't too

bad this morning. >> it was fairly easy right now. no more complication. it was okay. >> was it better or worse? >> it was normal. >> reporter: we timed the drive at 8:15 this morning. the 1.7 mile long span. the only commuters taking the bus had was a clogged approach. >> a little bit shorter getting on the bridge. took a little more time getting on the bridge. >> it could have been very, very bad. >> reporter: bridge officials were relieved. it doesn't cause more problems. they weren't able to open a fourth lane go into city with the movable barrier because this section was damaged possibly hit by a car. the barrier has been here for two years. officials say they have had few issues with it. >> looks like it's always been here and functioning incredibly well. this is one of the first problems we had with it and seems like it's going to be an easy fix. >> reporter: there is the crew that made the repair. they are exiting the bridge now.

they had to shut down a lane of traffic to protect that crew. it's for safety. that's why you see a bit of back up right now. that will be reopening soon and the very good news is it will all be normal in time for the afternoon commute. abc 7 news. >> thank you for that update. new this midday, ford is cancelling plans to build a new auto plant in mexico and now intends to bring those jobs to the u.s. the ford plant was supposed to cost $1.6 billion. the auto maker will invest $700 million in a michigan factory and will create 700 jobs. that announcement comes as president-elect trump threatened today to impose a border tax on cars that are built in mexico by general motors. new this midday from capitol hill paul ryan has been reelected. this comes after a widespread

criticism and questions from president-elect donald trump about the gop's priorities. abc megan hughes has that story. >> reporter: the 115 congress sworn in and delivering an opening day flip-flop. they planned to weaken the independent office of ethics. lawmakers would have had control over the group. >> the activetives of the oce that unjustly target members of congress and should not be subjected to anonymous complaints. >> reporter: democrats cried foul pointing to the president-elect's campaign promise. >> we're going to drain the swamp of corruption. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump disagreed, at least with the timing tweeting do they really have to make the weakening of the ethics watchdog, their number one act and priority. within hours of the tweet house republicans reversed course. >> i thought it was not the right way to proceed.

new this morning, we're hearing from carrie fisher's sisters and they are talking about their final moments. they sat down with chris, the three sisters shared a father. they were raised by different mothers. debbie reynolds raised carrie. she died one day after her daughter. they talk about being at her bedside in the hospital after her heart attack. >> i sat with debbie and she said to me that she was praying

for more time and she kept saying that she was -- she wanted more time and i knew that if carrie wasn't survive this, that debbie would not. you knew it. >> a private joint memorial is scheduled in los angeles on thursday. we're going to get to the video that so many of you are talking about this morning. if you haven't seen it on social media, wait until you see it. it's terrifying. it show a 2-year-old boy saving his twin who is trapped under fallen dresser. the video is jarring. we can tell you that both boys are going okay. >> reporter: they were being typical 2-year-old twins scrambling up their dresser to exploy but then it tips over pinning little brock under the heavy weight. you can see him struggle and screaming but body jumps right into action. he immediately tries to push the dress you are but can't get it

to move then he tries pushing from the other side. it still won't budge. he surveys the situation and decides to give lifting a shot but that doesn't work either. finally with a big lean he tries to push one more time and somehow manages the strength to move that large dresser and free his brother. >> check that out again. many are now calling him a real life mini super kid. mom says as soon as she saw the video, she bolted the dresser to the wall to make sure it won't happen again. >> what an incredible little guy. coming up, the new details on what may have set the singer up for disaster on the big apple's biggest stage. here is a live look at our tower camera. tracking the rain on the level two storm. when it will really come down on us. stay with us.

time to expand what we talked about. how about the camera. if you're going to be out on the water you can see the waves are kicking up a bit. they are going to get capped. plus the rain will be coming down. increasing rain and wind. that's the first accuweather highlight. rain will diminish for thursday mid-morning to friday. then a weekend soaking and atmospheric river event will develop.

even heavier and longer duration rain is possible saturday, sunday and into monday. you can dress a bit warmer than yesterday. you can see up in the hills about 45. 58 in san ramon. all right. you'll take the rain gear with you but the rain will come downsidown sideways. be careful. what it's seen, why it's so hot is because the snow line is down to about 3500 feet. snow and ice reflects more of the microwave or radiation coming out of live doppler 7. that's why it looks a lot hotter than what's really reaching the ground. we have moderate showers around half-moon bay. these are going to head over to san mateo. that's the beginning of the moderate rain that will develop as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. it looks pretty light. it's increasing from the south. that's where most of the moisture will come up.

that's why we'll have such heavy amounts in such a small time frame. once this low hooks up, that's when we'll see the activity develop. here we are from 11:00 to 1:00. you see mainly up in the north bay, that's where the moderate rain is. 2:00 on you can see it develop everywhere else and it just continues. 6:00, here we go into about 8:00, 9:00, you see a little red in there. that's when it will be heaviest. we'll still have moderate rain until about midnight. the cold front pushes in. you can see it slowly push the moderate rain out leaving us with light rain and a bit of drizzle. the south bay you'll get the rain shadow. then about an inch for the rest of us to two inches in the north bay to two to three inches in the santa cruz mountain. if you're heading into the sierra, it just started.

one to two feet at lake level. already half a foot at 7:00. by the time this ends thursday morning, two to three feet on the slopes and going to be big, fat wet flakes. it's going to get even heavier tomorrow, thursday and a wetter snow mixing with rain for saturday and sunday. that's the seven-day forecast for tahoe. we get a bit of a break thursday. friday afternoon that's when the rain comes in but it's heavy saturday and sunday. moderate rain, windy conditions. maybe a little more damage. need to find some stuff to do inside. we could watch some football games. >> that's true. right here on abc 7. the raiders against the texans. >> or just watch mariah carey videos over and over again. i've watched that meltdown one or ten times. we have details on the blame game that's continuing. ♪ feels like a --
