and today two senate committees are holding hearings on president obama's response to the cyber attacks. james copper is set to testify. new details about the ongoing u.s. military operation in mosul. they say american military advisors have been entering the war torn city accompanying iraqi forces to retake mosul. an air force colonel said they've doubled the number of help. the search for a missing helicopter that disappeared off the coast of san pedro. they reported seeing a helicopter go down in the water. the coast guard said the chopper is believed to have been a two-seater carrying a pilot and passenger. police say there were no distress calls. and police in chicago now have arrested four people saying they tortured a mentally disabled man and then live streamed the video on social media.

consumer behavior. those are some of the top stories on this thursday, january 5th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we say good morning to you. a lot of people asking what's wrong with people after seeing this disturbing attack on a man in chicago that was streamed on facebook live. >> we blurred the video, but we have to warn you, it is very graphic. police say two men and two women held their victim hostage, binding him with duct tape. they beat him, stabbed him, even burned him with cigarettes. brian clark has the details on the investigation. >> reporter: it's sickening it makes you wonder what would make individuals treat somebody like that. >> reporter: a video so disturbing that most of it has to be blurred out. a man beaten and attacked in chicago. streaming the incident on facebook live. >> i've been a cop for 28 years. i've seen things you shouldn't see in a lifetime, but it still amazes me how you still see things that you just shouldn't. >> reporter: four people are in

custody in connection with the video. police say an adult man with mental health challenges is believed to be the victim. he was found walking around the city's west side disoriented. >> he was traumatized fairly good. like i said, it took most of the night for him to calm down enough to be able to talk to us. >> reporter: the video shows him bound. his clothes and hair cut. the people around him shouting, sometimes using racial slurs. >> if you looked at the video, they were just stupidity. >> reporter: brian clarke, abc news, new york. >> charges are likely to come today and could include some hate crimes because of some of the statements said on that tape. the victim was treated at the hospital and now back home with his parents. millions of americans are dealing with a frigid blast of winter stretching across most of the country. a major storm is moving into the mid atlantic. those are crews in north carolina already salting the roads before the snow hits tomorrow night. and snow is falling from the

west coast to northern texas. and in parts of the northeast as well. major roadways are closed including a 50 mile stretch of interstate 80 from northern california into nevada and most of the major airlines are cancelling dozens of flights for today. and it will be 76 in hawaii today. >> that's where we need to go. >> a lot of people will be dealing with the windchill and millions are suffering through sub zero temperatures. >> for more on that and the rest of the forecast, let's go to justin. good morning. >> thanks and good morning. we're tracking a powerful storm west. extremely heavy rainfall along with mountain snow. it's going to be measured in additional feet. that's right we've had a ton of snow with the passes and travel is going to be hugely impacted here along interstate 80. looking at travel impacts today and tonight. snowfall accumulations, 1 to 2 inches for most places along the 95. president obama is embroiled

in a last ditch effort to save obama care. he went to capitol hill to rally democrats to fight any attempts to abolish that health care bill. at the same time mike pence was meeting with republicans promising that donald trump will start working on dismantling the law on day one, but they still haven't said what they plan to replace it with. and president obama is getting classified briefings today on the report he ordered detailing the preelection hacking and president-elect will receive his tomorrow. he is still questioning u.s. intelligence, and even siding with the wikileaks founder who posted the stolen e-mails. more now from abc's karen traverse. >> reporter: trump promised answers about what he claimed to know about the russian hacking scandal. >> i know things other people don't know, and so they cannot be sure of this situation. >> reporter: what do you know that other people don't know? >> you'll find out on tuesday or wednesday. >> reporter: so far no revolutions from trump tower, but the president-elect has had time to tweet.

the intelligence briefing on so-called russian hacking was delayed until friday. perhaps more time needed to build a case. very strange. but u.s. officials tell abc news there was no delay. the briefing was always scheduled for the end of the week. at the same time trump is doing a 180 on fugitive wikileaks founder. the founder saying the russian government played no role in providing those stolen e-mails. >> our source is not the russian government. and it is not a state party. >> reporter: trump quoted him on twitter wednesday. a far cry from what he said about it in 2010. >> you think it's disgraceful. >> reporter: u.s. officials maintain the founder of wikileaks is clueless. >> the russian intelligence services are capable of using a cutout to provide this information to wikileaks. >> reporter: while both republicans and democrats have criticized u.s. intelligence agencies before, trump's talk is raising eyebrows.

>> inside the intelligence community, do they like what they're hearing from the president-elect? >> not at all. they describe an atmosphere of dismay and disgust, and they wonder why their next commander in chief seems to find new ways to humiliate them at every turn. and in california lawmakers have hired former attorney general erik holder to take on the incoming trump administration. they are expecting challenges to california's policies on environmental as well as social issues. democratic leaders of the state's legislature say holder's firm will serve as outside council to help them resist any attempts to roll back their progress. >> a teenager body slammed by a police officer is now suing the city and the police department for $5 million. the cell phone video that sparked national outrage shows the police officer yanking a 15-year-old to the ground. he resigned but a grand jury

failed to indict him. the lawsuit alleges negligence, assault and excessive force. and outside of raleigh, north carolina, a high school resource officer caught on video slamming a 15-year-old girl to the floor has been placed on administrator leave. pending investigation. the teen reportedly suffered a concussion. the video does not show what led up to the body slam, but police say the officer had been responding to two students fighting. there's been an arrest in a hit and run in los angeles that left a man in critical condition. the crash and the get away captured on video. the victim suffered a crushed aorta. there's felony hit and run charges. police say the man was caught in just four days thanks to tips from the public. and now for one of the stories that just makes you feel like a slacker. >> yes. as we are. this is robert. the frenchman just set a new

morning. each party is huddled in their own corner. >> yes, and president obama is urging a number of democrats to stand their ground and defend the key portion of his legacy. while mike pence vowed that dismantling obama care will be donald trump's first order of business. meanwhile house republicans passed a bill at blocking scores of mary bruce has more. >> reporter: president obama arriving on capitol hill rallying democrats to defend his signature health care law. the president huddling with congressional democrats for the first time in over a year. >> thank you. look out for the american people. >> reporter: on the opposite side of the capitol, a different scene. mike pence meeting with house republicans. announcing donald trump is working on a series of executive orders to start rolling back obama care on day one.

>> we're going to repeal obama care and replace it with solutions that lower the cost of health insurance. republicans have been offering those ideas again and again. >> reporter: the republicans have voted to repeal the health care law more than 60 times. they still have not agreed on an terntive. we asked how speaker paul ryan. why no plan to replace it? >> we have a plan to replace it. we have plenty of ideas to replace it, and you'll see as the weeks and months unfold. >> reporter: even with some rank and file republicans are passing the buck. republicans have had years to mull this over. why is there still no cohesion around the best way to do this? >> well, as you know, i've been here 22 years. i ain't in the leadership. >> reporter: not on you? >> right. >> reporter: democrats are openly attacking republicans for having no clear plan. their message? you break it, you buy it, and obama care will become trump care. the president-elect perhaps seeing that too, issuing a warning for his own party

tweeting republicans must be careful in that democrats own the failed obama care disaster. adding obama care will fall of its own weight. be careful. all the people covered by obama care are left wondering what comes next. while a president trump could take executive action as soon as he takes office, he's aware of the political consequences of the fight. republicans are saying they want to phase out obama care over several years giving them time to come up with a comprehensive replacement and ensuring americans don't feel like the rug is being pulled out from under them. thanks to mary. the president-elect has selected a top wall street attorney to head the securities and exchange commission. jay clayton is an expert in public stock launches. the transition team as sec chair, he would encourage investment and provide oversight of wall street.

trump hired a political advisor dismissed by chris christie in the wake of the bridge gate case. he will be trump's deputy assistant and political director. he was not charged in the lane closing scandal. a blast of frigid air is spreading across the northern half of the country and it's causing temperatures plummeting. north dakota is one of the most bone chilling spots. temperatures there won't reach above zero until friday. heavy snow triggered a multivehicle crash in pennsylvania. nobody there was seriously injured. and in the west wind and rain and lower elevations with the snow in the mountains making travel virtually impossible. some state highways in california, oregon and nevada are closed. in chicago police arrested four people following a live stream video that allegedly shows the suspects torturing a mentally disabled man. we have blurred the video.

we'll show you a small portion but we warn you it is graphic. the four people in custody are seen and heard on the video beating, burning, stabbing as well as taunting the duct taped man. police believe the man was held hostage for at least a day and possibly as long as 48 hours. they found him walking around the city's west side completely disoriented. at least 30 more witnesses may testify in the penalty phase of the charleston church massacre trial. a federal jury heard from four victims, family members and white supremacist dylann roof. he insisted he is not mentally ill and once again said he will not call any witnesses in his defense. he could be executed for killing nine members of an historic black church. prosecutors plan to call up to 38 witnesses including two survivors. a chilling new video shows what happened when police responded to a trespassing call at a walmart and ended up in a shootout. abc has the details.

>> reporter: it started with a call from this arizona walmart. someone trespassing, but it turned into a shootout right out of a movie. police releasing multiple angles of video showing what went down that april morning. officers talking with the suspect watch. the man suddenly opens fire. hitting officer joshua three times. once in the face. officer daniel caldwell taking two bullets of the vest. the force sending him through a display. watch as he rolls and comes up firing ultimately killing the suspect, mitchel oakley. officer peblo survived walking out of the hospital to a standing ovation. he says he feels lucky to be alive. 2016 saw law enforcement fatalities at their highest level in five years. >> when you walk out the door, you never when it could be your last. >> the officer has nerve damage on his face is on leave. officer caldwell is on active duty. and they are being called heros.

macy's is making headlines. they say they're cutting more than 10,000 jobs moving forward with its plan to close 68 stores nationwide including some high profile and even historic locations including its store in downtown minneapolis. it first opened more than 100 years ago. the retail giant blames online shopping and a change in consumer habits. not to be outdone, a llama is claiming it moment in the spotlight. it got loose in georgia. unlike the emu, someone claimed the llama. the owners showed up after the animal was cornered. the llama was just going on a run for taco bell.

how cool how cool is this? this is mexico volcano blowing its top off. the fire volcano is erupting sending smoke and ash nearly 5,000 feet into the air. the volcano is located in the western part of the country. the activity is increasing since october, in some cases erupting several times a day. in mexico city emotions erupting over a 20% hike in gas prices. the mexican president defended the controversial move to end government regulation of gas and diesel prices.

james clapper is set to testify. new details about the ongoing u.s. military operation in mosul. they say american military advisors have been entering the war torn city accompanying iraqi forces to retake mosul. an air force colonel said they've doubled the number of advisers providing support to troops on the front line. the search for a missing helicopter that disappeared off the coast of san pedro. passengers on a cruise ship reported seeing a helicopter go down in the water. the coast guard said the chopper is believed to have been a two-seater carrying a pilot and passenger. police say there were no distress calls. and police in chicago now have arrested four people saying they tortured a mentally disabled man and then live streamed the video on social media.
