ready or not rs here comes the rain. the biggest storm of the season heading to the bay area right now. here's what it looked like earlier this morning in san francisco on van ness avenue. how much can we expect this weekend? good morning, everybody, i'm cornell bernard in for chris nguyen. here's meteorologist in for lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. get ready because it's just beginning. here's a look at live doppler 7 show you the start of this storm. we have wet weather all the way around the bay area and as we zoom in, we'll find heavier weather indicated by orange and yellow just north of bay point into collinsville. you can see over the last few

hours, all the moisture in the clouds heading our way. this atmospheric river is going to bring us a level 2 on the storm impact scale, exclusive to abc7. so, for today, expect downpours throughout the morning, showers in the afternoon, windy with gusts up to 60 miles per hour in the higher elevations and up to about 1 1/2 inches for certain are areas. 7:00 this morning, still very heavy, down pour continuing through the morning hours. we get a little bit of a break as it turns into showers this afternoon but get ready for an even bigger storm tomorrow. >> thank you, frances. in developing news this morning, berkeley police are looking for a man they believe stabbed one person to death and injured another. 24-year-old pablo gomez jr. of southern california is believed to be armed and dangerous. police found a body inside a

house on ash booe avenue. after discovering a seriously wounded woman on ridge road. she is listed in stable condition this morning. a motive for the stabbing has not yet been released. hoping for the best, expecting the worst. residents in the santa cruz mountains are bracing for lots of rain and wind from the coming storm in an area that's already saturated and vulnerable to damage. katie marzullo tells us people are taking proactive approaches to staying dry and safe. >> seemed like there was so much uncertainty that it wasn't worth waiting around to find out. >> reporter: covered bridge equestrian center sits right on the banks of the san lorenzo river in felton. the owners opted to move all 70 horses to higher ground. >> '82, it was disastrous here. where you're standing now was probably about 3 feet over your head so it gets pretty red radical. >> reporter: with just hours to go before the rain starts falling, cynthia was hoping to fill 20 sandbags to protect her santa cruz home. >> ten years ago when it rained,

our whole house almost flooded. it just came down the hill, crept up and got up to my knees. >> reporter: the city of santa cruz is providing free bags and sand and encouraging residents to be prepared. >> to have plenty of food and water, any essential medicines on hand, have a battery-operated radio, plenty of back-up batteries. >> reporter: also, flashlights and a full tank of gas. but officials are asking people to stay off the roads if they can. for its part, the city has had crews inspecting and cleaning pump stations, catch basins, and 67 miles of storm drains. humans, horses, and homes bracing for impact. >> see what happens. we're hoping for the best but expecting the worst. >> reporter: now the waiting game begins. abc7 news was in downtown san asnselmo as merchants and residents braced for flooding.

san anselmo creek looked calm yesterday but residents fear. >> the creek extends itself and touch wood, we've been very lucky and we've always dodged the bullet. but i kind of have a feeling my luck's about to run out. >> in sonoma county, crews rushed to fortify the banks of copeland creek to keep it from overflowing. in san francisco, it's all hands on deck as the city prepares for the storm. abc7 news reporter sergio has details. >> reporter: san francisco public utility commission crews started assembling and filling these flood barriers. they're using them in hopes of channeling waters away from homes in this flood-prone intersection. >> we're piloting them, we're still looking at how effective they are, and trying to determine if this is something we're going to roll out on a larger basis. >> reporter: the puc crews will be on call 24 hours a day through the weekend to keep an eye on the barriers. they've also deployed these

large vacuum trucks to clear out storm drains. at the san francisco public works yard, plenty of sandbags are packed and ready for pick-up. the public works department will also mobilize lots of extra personnel. >> we're going to have tree crews, general laborers to help clear debris if that needs to be done, engineers and street inspectors on call if there's a land slide or a mud slide on a big sinkhole, we'll be there to take care of the problem. >> reporter: and to make sure field crews get to where they're needed, extra dispatchers are being brought on to field 911 emergency calls as well as 311 calls. the city is also opening up extra beds at homeless shelters. anyone looking for those resources can go to the city drop in center at bryant and 5th streets. in pacifica, the municipal pier closed around 10:00 last night. the city wants to keep people safe from high tides, strong swells and gusty winds as the

storm gets more powerful. yosemite national park officials are concerned about heavy flooding. all roads leading to the park's valley floor are closed through sunday to keep people safe. this weekend's rain could dump up to 1 foot of rain on that area. live doppler 7 will be changing and you can track the approaching storm account abc7 news app. be sure to enable push alerts to get advisories sent straight to your phone or tablet. two people at the civic center b.a.r.t. station in san francisco were stabbed with a ma machete by a man who ran away. b.a.r.t. police closed the market and 7th street exit after the attack but the station remained open. the condition of the victims, still unknown as well as a motive. the man who was rescued earlier this week after he was trapped between a b.a.r.t. car and a platform has died from his injuries. 31-year-old jeff de la fuenete

was commuting home from work when he got stuck. >> he gave me a kiss and he went to work. >> reporter: an apparent accident during wednesday night's commute is hard for dorny to comprehend. >> i also use the 24th street b.a.r.t. station and how does someone get pinned? >> reporter: around 6:00, her long-time boyfriend somehow stumbled in front of the train. he became pinned at the waist between the platform and second car. rescuers deployed air bags to push the car off him, transporting de la fuente to san francisco general hospital, conscious and talking. >> the doctor said that he thought -- he fought to stay alive. he really did. >> reporter: jeff worked near the b.a.r.t. station as a mechanic in the mission, but he also drove cab and made many friends while doing so. tonight, they stopped by to create a candle light

leonard they can sue the u.s. government for her death in san francisco. the chronicle also reported she cannot sue the city of san francisco. kate died after being shot at pier 14 in july. the gun used had been stolen from a federal agent's unlocked car. her suspected killer is an undocumented immigrant who had been released from the san francisco jail. the flu has claimed its first three victims of the season in california. 2 t deaths include two 65-year-olds. the state health department has issued a public warning urging everyone to get their flu shot. they say the flu virus is now widespread through all nine bay area counties. well, there was jubilation in downtown oakland and a parade for the warriors, not the golden state basketball team, but the high school football team. abc7 news reporter laura anthony has our story. >> reporter: it's a parade for the warriors, not the highly

very windy conditions, especially in the higher elevations, rainfall amounts will range from 1/4 inch to about 1 1/2 inches for most areas but even more in some of the santa cruz mountains. there's a wind advisory in the yellow areas. we've got winds from the south, 10 to 20 miles per hour, but gusts can reach 45 miles per hour and then look out for downed trees and possible power outages. in addition to that, we have the high wind warning for the higher elevations for the hills and the mountains. it starts today. it starts at 4:00 a.m. actually, just started earlier, ends at 1:00 this afternoon for parts of the north bay, 4:00 a.m. tomorrow for parts of the santa cruz mountains and east bay, so again, winds can reach up to 60 miles per hour above 1500 feet and looking out for the downed trees and power lines. get ready for tomorrow's storm. on the storm impact scale, it's going to rate a 4. this is major. out of 5.

expect the highest impact to be between midnight and 10:00 tomorrow. heavy rain, powerful gusts, flooding, and wind damage is likely. we haven't seen a storm like this in over ten years. so, here are the big concerns. we have possible stream and creek flooding, that's high. debris flows, especially over the burn scar areas where we've had recent fires, hydroplaning likely, if you're driving, try to avoid it if you can. power outages medium and also river flooding a concern. flash flood watch in effect starting today, and this starts at 4:00 this afternoon. it continues through tomorrow. we've got streams and roadway flooding possible, debris flows in the santa cruz mountains, especially, again, over those burn scar areas. tonight, the storm moves in again, and then major by midnight. you'll see more areas of yellow and orange, even some red popping up throughout the morning hours. we're just going to get pounded and inundated with heavy

downpours through the morning hours. then, it starts to break off by the afternoon where we get a little bit of breaks, still some heavy downpours in isolated areas. by the end of the week weekend, we could see 5 to 10 inches or more in the santa cruz mountains, 3 to 4 1/2 inches around the bay, and up to 6 inches in parts of the north bay. also, we're keeping an eye on a couple of rivers that are expected to go over flood stage. the napa river in st. helena will crest tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. flood stage at 16 feet, it's going to go above that to 18.7 feet so nearby areas will be flooded. also in guerneville, we're expecting it to crest by monday so takes a little bit of time for the rain to catch up in the rivers but it will exceed the flood stage monday afternoon, moderate flooding there as well. so we've got a lot in the accuweather seven day forecast. today, rainy and breezy conditions, most of the

downpours will be during the morning hours and still isolated heavy showers in the afternoon. that storm impact scale gets bumped up to a 4 with the major storm tomorrow. heavy rain, gusty winds. monday, lingering showers, and you'll notice it is raining all seven days in the accuweather seven day forecast but the real big concern is sunday, tomorrow, with the storm impact scale of 4 and also on tuesday, we're going to get another big, strong storm. that's going to rate a number 3 on our impact scale. >> incredible. talk to emergency officials yesterday up in the north bay and they said, if you can manage not going out tomorrow, may be a good idea. >> i would definitely try to stay home, get the games out, some movies maybe, and charge your cell phone in case there's a power outage in your area. >> thank you so much, frances. just ahead, it's the wild card match-up for raider nation. wooin

good morning to you. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist frances dinglasan. good morning, frances. >> good morning, cornell. good morning, everyone. get ready for a wet weekend. live doppler 7 showing us widespread scattered rain and showers right now in santa rosa where we see some heavier rain, indicated by the yellow and orange. we just got over 1/10 inch in just the past hour. so that gives you an idea of what to expect and what's to come. here's a look as we zoom out. see all those clouds moving our way. this is an atmospheric river and that's why we're going to get copious amounts of rainfall throughout the weekend. for today's storm, it ranks a number 2, moderate, on the storm impact scale out of 5. expect morning downpours by this afternoon, we'll see some isolated heavy showers, windy conditions as well with gusts up to 60 miles per hour and we can get anywhere from 1/4 inch in

the rain shadow areas to 1 1/2 inches for some north bay locations so in the next few hours, heavy rain indicated by yellow and orange in parts of the north bay. by 8:00, heavier rains in santa cruz mountains. notice that area of red and it continues through the morning hours a little bit of a break this afternoon, but for an even bigger storm heading our way, cornell. >> busy weekend. thank you very much, frances. developing news out of florida now where authorities today may have released the motive behind a deadly airport attack. a man who claimed he was being forced to watch isis videos oemd fire on people waiting in the baggage claim area. abc's kenneth joins us live from ft. lauderdale international airport with more details. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, cornell. this airport has reopened this morning but terminal 2 with investigators say this gunman opened fire in the baggage claim is still closed at this hour. this horrifying and horrific incident, several people were killed, dozens injured, and

thousands of air travelers stranded. chaos and carnage in the baggage claim of florida's airport. and this morning, authorities are holding 26-year-old esteban santiago for the crime. investigators admit they don't know why santiago suddenly opened fire. >> i heard of people just started running down the way and trampling over people and security yelled, everybody hit the floor. >> reporter: that warning, too late for some. this woman was fatally wounded. the urgent calls for help. >> shots fired downstairs. >> reporter: travelers looked on no horror as the gunman let loose a hail of bullets. >> i'm looking at a man and a woman and the man bleeding profusely and the woman who just says, help, help. >> he did nothing but swing the gun and shoot.

>> reporter: as heavily armed s.w.a.t. teams rushed to the scene, the terminal was evacuated. santiago threw down his gun and surrendered to police. >> he was taken into custody by the local police and transported to a medical facility for a mental health evaluation. >> reporter: santiago's aunt in new jersey told media in spanish the ex-army reservist had issues when he returned from iraq a few years ago. santiago has been charged with several counts of murder. he's being held at the local jail at this hour. investigators are also working to figure out why he traveled from alaska here to florida. they're searching through his social media posts and also his military records to try to find a motive. reporting live in ft. lauderdale, abc7 news. abc7 news was at sfo where we talked to several stunned

passengers who left ft. lauderdale and were in the air when they found out about the shooting. six flights to and from ft. lauderdale were canceled last night. if you are headed there today, check with your airline to make sure the flight has not bb canceled. we turn now to president-elect donald trump who was briefed by the nation's top intelligence officials on their investigation into russians hacking of the u.s. election. just hours before that briefing, mr. trump called it a, quote, political witch hunt. abc7 news reporter has the story. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump behind closed doors face to face for the first time with the highest levels of the nation's intelligence community. that classified meeting coming just days after he publicly bashed their findings that russia tried to interfere with the election. >> i also know things that other people don't know and so they cannot be sure of this situation. >> what do you know that other people don't know? >> you'll find out on tuesday or wednesday. >> reporter: tuesday and wednesday came and went with no announcement about what trump really knows.

again and again, trump refusing to accept the findings of the 17 u.s. intelligence agencies. >> they have no idea if it's russia or china or somebody. it could be somebody sitting in a bed some place. >> reporter: in an interview with the "new york times," he called it a witch hunt. hours later, trump sat across from the director of national intelligence and the heads of the fbi, cia, and nsa as they presented their explosive report, concluding, quote, russian president vladimir putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016, aimed at the u.s. presidential election to undermine public faith in the u.s. democratic process, denigrate secretary clinton and harm her electability and potential presidency. we further assess putin and the russian government developed a clear preference for president-elect trump. parts of that report declassified say russia aspired to help president-elect trump's election chances when possible by discrediting secretary clinton and publicly contrasting

her unfavorably to him. after the meeting, trump releasing a statement conceding russia, china, and others are consistently trying to hack a variety of american institutions, including the dnc, but still not publicly accepting russia's interference in the election. trump saying, "there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election, including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines." the investigation opening deep wounds between trump and the intelligence community. >> there's a difference between skepticism and disparagement. >> reporter: but in what is perhaps an olive branch, trump now calling his meeting with intelligence leaders constructive. abc news new york. as the president-elect's team gets ready to take office, first lady official obama is thanking all of her spoers. she got choked up yesterday while delivering her final remarks from the white house as

it's a wet drive on the richmond-san rafael bring this morning for sure. in fact, it's wet all over the bay area. meteorologist frances dinglasan is tracking a series of intense storms heading to the bay area right now. british guards are known for having a stiff upper lip, but watch who happens when a mini-guardsman came to visit windsor castle for his 4th birthday. marshal scott was saluting the soldiers. that was exciting enough, but then one of them came back and smn summoned the admirier for a photo. the guard came back and offered to give marshall and his mom a tour of the castle. pretty cool. san mateo native and nfl super star tom brady is

dinglasan. a very wild, wet weekend ahead. live doppler 7. we've had some heavy rain in santa rosa where just today we've already seen 1/4 inch so far and of course we have light snow falling in the tahoe area but i would avoid traveling there because that snow will turn into rain tonight and just a mess tomorrow. the storm impact scale race a 2 today and this is going to be for today, morning downpours, afternoon showers, windy conditions, especially in the higher elevations, where gusts can reach up to 60 miles per hour. rainfall for most areas will reach about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches. now, today, we also have the wind advisories in effect and i want to show you the conditions right now. it's already gusting up to 31 miles per hour in napa and even over 25 miles per hour in mountain view and in san jose. so there's a wind advisory for all the areas in yellow all along the coast, along the peninsula and parts of the east bays until 1:00 this afternoon. gusts reaching up to 45 miles

per hour. of course we're concerned about the downed trees and possible power outages. in the higher elevations, the hills and mountains, there's a high wind warning where gusts can even each 60 miles per hour above 1500 feet and this will % end today in the afternoon for the north bay hills and not until tomorrow morning for some of the east bay hills and santa cruz mountains. for tomorrow, on our exclusive storm impact scale, we rate each storm 1 out of 5, so tomorro's going aba major storm. it ranks a 4. we haven't seen a storm this big in over ten years. the heaviest impact will be between midnight to 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. heavy rain, powerful, gusty wind, flooding, and wind damage are expected and likely for tomorrow. we're also looking out for stream and creek flooding. these are the concerns that are high. debris flows as well. especially over the burn scar areas where we've had the recent fires. hydroplaning likely, try to avoid driving if you can, especially tomorrow morning. power outages, we expect as well

as river flooding so look out for that. there is a flash flood watch that starts this afternoon and continues through tomorrow. so, we're looking for stream and roadway flooding through the north bay and all along the peninsula and east bay, the areas of green, just avoid driving if you can. that would be a good idea. so, we have the heavy rain this morning, showers and isolated heavy showers this afternoon. then, 10:00 tonight, we'll start to see the rain move in again. here's where we see the major storms, sunday, we'll see lots of areas of orange and yellow, even pockets of red where we just get these downpours and heavy rain. we'll just be inundated and pounded for hours and hours through the morning hours until lunchtime and then in the afternoon, it will start to taper off and we'll get some still pockets of heavy rain, we'll get a little bit of a break for some north bay areas but notice the rain continues and it continues all week long. now, our potential rainfall for the weekend may even reach over

10 inches in the santa cruz mountains, up to 4 1/2 inches around the bay and up to 6 inches in the santa cruz areas. we're looking at river flooding potentially in the napa river, st. helene is going to crust tomorrow afternoon. it will be above flood stage most of the day tomorrow, and here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast, rainy and breezy day today, 2 on our storm impact scale. raining all week, but the big concern is for tomorrow where we have a major storm that's a number 4 on our storm impact scale. just be really prepared for that, and gear up and do whatever you need to do, try not to go outdoors at all if you can. we've got a storm on monday but our next big storm is on tuesday after that. that's also a number 3 and pretty big as well. >> all right, frances, thank you so much. as we mentioned earlier, we have a huge nfl wild card weekend match-up right here on abc7 as the raiders take on the houston texans. coverage begins at noon. david nuno from our sister station, ktrk is live at nrg
