s? xarelto® has you covered. ready or not, here comes the rain. the biggest storm of the season is heading to the bay area. here's what it looked like earlier this morning in san francisco. how much can we expect this weekend? good morning. it's saturday, january 7th. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist frances dinglasan. >> we can expect up to an inch of rain in some areas, like the santa cruz mountains. picking up a lot of rain in the north bay right now. we still have widespread rainfall, especially heaviest in the north bay, with orange and yellow there. and of course, snow in the sierra. here's how it plays out today. by 9:00 this morning, we'll still see some of the heaviest

rain mostly in the north bay, but we'll also see some pop up near antok. and in the next several hours it will continue to rain throughout the morning hours into this afternoon where we'll start to see some scattered showers. and then get ready, rain moves in once again tonight for our next big storm tomorrow. rainfall potentials over the next couple of days range anywhere from 2 inches to 4.5 inches. of course, that major storm, that we're gearing up for tomorrow, i'll tell you all about that and what you can expect and be prepared for some power outages. cornell? >> incredible. frances, thank you so much. berkeley police looking for a man they believe viciously stabbed one person to death and injured another. 24-year-old pablo gomez jr. of southern california is believed to be armed and dangerous. police found a body in a house on ashby avenue after discovering a seriously wounded woman on ridge road. she is listed in stable condition. a motive for the stabs has not

been released. a two-alarm fire two hours ago. firefighters found flames burning through the roof. strong winds swirled smoke around the house making it hard to see. no injuries reported. an investigation under way to determine the cause of the fire. hoping for the best but expecting the worst. residents of the santa cruz mountains are bracing for lots of rain and wind from the coming storm in an area that's already saturated and vulnerable to damage. katy shows us how folks are trying to stay safe and dry. >> seemed like there was so much uncertainty that it wasn't worth waiting around to find out. >> reporter: the equestrian center sits right on the banks of the river. they will move all 70 horses to higher ground. >> '82 was disas trout.

about three foot over your head where you're standing. it gets pretty radical. >> reporter: with just hours to go before the rain starts falling, cynthia rit naur was hoping to fill 20 sandbags to protect her santa cruz home. >> 20 years ago it came down and slowly crept up and got almost up to my knees. so we're not going to do that again this year. >> reporter: the city of santa cruz is providing free bags and sand and encouraging residents to be prepared. >> have plenty of food and water, any essential medicines on hand, have a battery operated radio, plenty of backup batteries. >> reporter: also flashlights and a full tank of gas. officials are asking people to stay off the roads if they can. for its part, the city has had crews inspecting and cleepg pump stations, catch stations and 67 miles of storm drains. humans, horses and homes placing for impact. >> we're hoping for the best but expecting for the worst.

>> reporter: now the waiting game begins. abc news were in ansellmo. the creek looked pretty calm yesterday. locals fear heavy rains could push the creek above its banks and into their homes and businesses. >> the creek extends on anselmo avenue. touchwood, we've been lucky. we've always dodged a bullet. but i kind of have a feeling my luck is about to run out. >> crews rushed to fortify the banks of copeland creek to keep them from overflowing near pengrove. the city prepares for the storm. sergio has the details. >> reporter: san francisco public utility commission crews started assembling and filling these flood barriers, hoping to channel water away from homes in this flood-prone intersection.

>> we're piloting them, still looking at how effective they are. and trying to determine if this is something we're going to roll out on a larger basis. >> reporter: the puc crews will be on call 24 hours a day through the weekend to keep an eye on the barriers. they've also deployed these large vacuum trucks to clear out storm drains that get stopped up. at kansas and marin streets, sandbags are packed and ready for pickup. they'll also mobilize lots of personnel. >> arborists will be out, general laborers to help clear debris if that needs to be done. we'll also have our engineers and street inspectors on call if there's a mudslide or landslide or big sinkhole. >> reporter: to make sure crews get to where they're needed, extra dispatchers are being brought on to field 911 emergency calls as well as 311 calls. they're also opening up extra beds for homeless shelters. go to the city drop-in center at

bryant and 5th street. pacifica, the municipal pier closed around 10:00 last night. it will stay closed through at least until monday morning. they want to keep people safe as the storm gets more powerful. national park officials are concerned the heavy downpours could bring flooding. the park hasn't seen since 1997. all roads leading into the valley park closed sunday to keep people safe. this weekend's rain could dump up to a foot of rain in that area. live doppler 7 will be changing, and you can track the approaching storm with the abc 7 news app. enable push alerts to get advisories sent straight to your phone or tablet. two people at the civic center b.a.r.t. station in san francisco were stabbed with a machete by a man who ran away. it happened just after 8:30 last night. b.a.r.t. police closed the market and 7th street exit after the attack. but the station remained open. the condition of the victims is unknown as well as a motive.

the man who was rescued earlier this week after he was trapped between a b.a.r.t. car and platform has died from his injuries. 31-year-old jeff de la fuente was stuck at the b.a.r.t. station. katy talked with his longtime girlfriend. >> he went to work. >> reporter: an apparent accident during wednesday night's commute is hard for dorothy mack to comprehend. >> the b.a.r.t. station, how do you get pinned. >> reporter: her longtime boyfriend somehow stumbled in front of the train. he became pinned at the waist between the platform and second car. rescuers deployed air bags to push the car off of him. transporting de la fuente to the hospital. conscious and talking. >> the doctor said that he fought -- he fought to stay alive.

he really did. >> reporter: he worked at the b.a.r.t. station as a mechanic, but also drove a cab and made many friends while doing so. >> i just want his family to know he was loved. by many. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. police are investigating. but a spokesman said the death appears to be accidental. >> he was aspiring to be a lawyer. he was scheduled to take the test in february. >> reporter: born in berkeley and reared by a single mother, de la fuente spent part of his childhood in the philippines. his mother plans to bury him there following a local funeral. friends have set up a go fund me page to help with the funeral expenses. >> frances is here. we're tracking the storm. you can call this an epic storm, right? >> we haven't seen anything like this in over ten years. very windy conditions. a high wind warning.

good morning. check it out. slow wet drive for the north bay. the look from the san rafael cam as the rain falls. and will continue for really the next many days, i think. the epic storm hitting the bay area right now. frances will be along to tell us more about that. fresh crab will soon be showing up in bay area restaurants again after the end of a strike that kept the entire west coast dungeness crab fishermen out of the water. $2.87 is now the agreed-upon price. san francisco crabbers were making $3 a pound but say the loss is worth it after the unity showed by west coast crabbers. the problem now with the storm approaching is when to fish. 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick is keeping his promise to donate $1 million to

be out on the street. >> i have to see what we have in terms of proposals and start digging in and getting the work done. >> reporter: sheehy will be sworn in monday by mayor lee and on the job on monday. in san francisco, abc 7 news. firefighters in vallejo had to rescue a man whose car slammed into a power pole last night around 8:00. police say the 22-year-old driver was speeding when he lost control of the car. he lost part of his leg in the accident. officers say alcohol was involved in that accident. the government can be sued for a death in san francisco. the chronicle reports the same federal judge ruled stein le's family cannot sue the city of san francisco. she was shot at pier 14 in july 2015. the gun used had been stolen from a federal agent's unlocked car. her suspected killer is an

undocumented immigrant. the first three victims include two 65-year-olds, one in napa county and the other in solano county. the health department issued a public warning urging everyone who's more than 6 months old to make sure they get a flu shot. the flu virus is now widespread through all nine bay area counties. good morning. you may have heard the rain pounding overnight in santa rosa. we already got over half an inch of rain since midnight. still quite a bit of rainfall through parts of the north bay right now. but winds are also going to be a factor. right now we have winds gusting up to 40 miles an hour in half moon bay, mountain view and almost 40 in san jose. the winds are coming from the south. that's where the storm is coming from. right now, here's a live view of mount tam. raindrops and wind there. san francisco 50 degrees. san jose 52 degrees. we've gotten the least amount of

rainfall in the south bay. the storm impact scale ranks a 2 today, moderate storm, 2 out of 5. we've got the morning downpours and by this afternoon we'll have scattered showers, very windy conditions with 60-mile-per-hour gusts possible in the higher elevations. we're expecting anywhere from a quarter of an inch in parts of the south bay to an inch and a half in some of the heavier locations like the north bay. a wind advisory in effect until 1:00 this afternoon for the areas in yellow, all along the coast and parts of the east bay. winds from the south 20 to 30 miles per hour with 45-mile-per-hour gusts possible. so the concern here, downed trees and power outages, get ready for that. it will be even tougher tomorrow. it's higher in the upper elevations, so high wind warning there where gusts can reach up to 60 miles per hour. that's in effect, and this afternoon for some of the north bay mountains, and also the east bay hills, it continues through tomorrow morning. get ready for the big storm tomorrow. on our storm impact scale, this

ranks ooh 4, a major storm. we haven't seen anything like this in over ten years. the heaviest impact will be between midnight and 10:00 a.m. we'll just get pounded by rain. heavy rain, powerful winds. so we are expecting flooding and wind damage as well. be prepared. other concerns that are high, stream and creek flooding, debris flow over the burn scar areas where we've had some of the recent fires. hydroplaning will be high, so avoid driving if you can. power outages, looking for that as well as the river flooding, that will also be a concern. a flash flood watch takes effect today. stream and roadway flooding for all the bay area. and that continues through tomorrow. then here's how it plays out. the heavy rain moves in midnight. you notice the pockets of red and orange, that's the heavy rain, and it continues throughout the morning hours, into the afternoon. finally, we get a little bit of a break tomorrow night. but there will still be heavy showers around the bay area.

potential rainfall could be up to 10 inches, even a foot in the santa cruz mountains. 2 to 3 inches throughout most of the bay area. up to 4 1/2 around the bay and possibly up to 6 inches in the higher elevations of the north bay. of course, we're keeping track of a couple of rivers that are expected to flood. napa river, st. helena, it will crest tomorrow, 4:00 in the afternoon. it will be above flood stage. so nearby areas will be flooded. gurnsville, the russian river will flood as well. it's expected to crest monday afternoon. it will be above flood stage tomorrow night. moderate flooding expected in the area. get ready for a wet and wild weekend with all the rain and the wind. for today, storm impact scale 2 out of 5. rainy and breezy. tomorrow will be the toughest day we've seen in a while. heavy rain, gusty winds. that is going to be a 4 on our storm impact scale. this is a major storm that everybody needs to be prepared for.

we had snow falling over tahoe indicated by the white and pink. i just updated the rainfall totals since midnight. over half an inch already in santa rosa. almost half an inch in san francisco. you notice in the leeside of the rain, or rain shadow in san jose, only .6. it ranks 2 out of 5. a moderate storm with morning downpours and afternoon showers. windy, gusty conditions up to 60 miles per hour in the higher elevations. rainfall amounts to only quarter of an inch in the south bay, all the way up to an inch and a half through parts of the north bay. over the next couple hours, we'll still see some widespread rainfall, 10:00 this morning, into noon. heavier rain indicaed by yellow. and it will continue. the afternoon, just a brief break before more rain moves in toward this evening. and get ready, it's going to get really wet later tonight into tomorrow, where we have an even bigger storm ahead. cornell?

>> frances, thank you. in florida, authorities may release the motive behind a deadly airport attack. a man who claimed he was being forced to watch isis videos opened fire on people waiting at a baggage claim area. here's more details. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, cornell. local and federal authorities just gave an update moments ago. they say the suspected gunman is cooperating but there's still no clear motive. and terrorism has not been ruled out. investigators say they now know the suspect came to this airport just to carry out the attack. chaos and carnage in the baggage claim of ft. lauderdale airport after a shooting rampage. and this morning authorities are holding 26-year-old esteban sast yag oh for the crime. >> we have not ruled out terrorism. >> reporter: but investigators admit they don't know why santiago suddenly opened fire.

very strong gusty winds in san jose. 39 miles per hour. also in half moon bay. strong gusts throughout the day as well. on the storm impact scale, today's storm ranks a 2. we have downpours during the morning hours. by afternoon we'll see some showers still pretty heavy at times. windy conditions as well. with gusts up to 60 miles per hour. especially in the higher elevations. and rainfall totals will range anywhere from a quarter of an inch to some of the rain shadow areas like the south bay all the way to an inch and a half in some of the north bay locations. even a little bit more in some of the mountains. there's a wind advisory in effect until 1:00 today. winds from the south 20 to 30 miles per hour. but gusting up to 45 miles an hour. the areas highlighted in yellow all along the coast and parts of the east bay, watch for downed trees and possible power outages today. in the higher elevations there's a high wind warning. and this is where gusts can reach up to 60 miles an hour,

above 1,500 feet. that expires this afternoon for the north bay hills. east bay mountains and santa cruz mountains, that continues through tomorrow morning. now, get ready, on abc 7 storm impact scale, tomorrow's storm is going to be a 4 out of 5. this major storm is something we haven't seen in about ten years, or over ten years. so the heaviest impact will be between midnight to 10:00 a.m. we'll just get pounded by heavy rain, and powerful winds. it's going to be continuous throughout the morning hours. flooding and wind damage likely. so get ready for that. and try to avoid driving if you can. here's some of the major concerns. we're looking for stream and creek flooding, that's a high risk. debris flows over the burn scar areas where we've had the recent areas. hydroplaning is likely as well. that's why i suggest avoid driving especially tomorrow morning. a flash flood watch that starts

today. so the areas here in green, which is basically the entire bay area, we're going to look out for streams and roadway flooding, debris flow as well. especially through the santa cruz mountains. and that koits through tomorrow night. here's how it plays out. by midnight tonight, we'll see some of the heavier rain, the orange and yellow. the major storm continues. what you'll notice is the red popping up nonstop through the morning hours, and then continuing past noon into the evening where we finally still see some scattered but heavy showers at times. we're also looking for rainfall to possibly reach a foot in the santa cruz mountains, two to three inches in parts of the south bay, three to four around the south bay. as expected, rivers will be flooded. napa rif above flood stage. we're keeping an eye in guerneville where the river is
