and we do say good morning, everyone, on this monday. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm mara schiavocampo in for diane macedo. a winter storm is battering the western u.s. bringing heavy rain, strong winds and even ice and snow. >> first up take a look at this. you can see the storm moving in from the pacific and affecting parts of ten states. many roads are blocked by flooding and mudslides. the storm toppled many trees in the san francisco bay area including this one in the city's mission district. it demolished the two cars you see there, but there were no injuries. torrential rains and major flooding. a state of emergency on the west coast. rivers rising to their highest levels in more than a decade. the truckee river in northern nevada cresting overnight forcing people in more than 1,000 homes to be evacuated in reno. in northern california, at least three people have died from falling trees and flooded roads. in wine country vineyards underwater.

this drone video showing the swollen napa river. >> to look like this two days into it with a week to go, this is going to be a mess. >> reporter: the waterfalls in yosemite national park overflowing as the merced river hits capacity. it could lead to a massive spillover. officials ordering nonessential park employees to stay out. nearly 50 of them have left to take shelter. >> yeah, i think it's a great thing, what they did. you know, they took care of our safety as a number one priority and got us out of there and i seen what it looks like. >> reporter: the high winds taking out this tourist atraction. the iconic tunnel tree toppling over in the storm. that is just an unbelievable image. >> terrible loss. >> for many people who live right there. we should mention at least four people have died in the western storm and the death toll may rise. yeah, let's get the weather forecast now from accuweather's paul williams. paul, good morning. >> good morning, kendis, mara. looking for major flooding along the west coast. we're actually expecting for

lives to be threateninged as a result of this river of moisture sliding its way into the west coast and we're going to have excessive snow that will be on the other side of the mountainous region, but devastating flooding will ravage throughout north and central portions of california. we mentioned that snow. we're looking between six to even a foot of snow that's going to be on the other side of the mountainous region so looking for excessive snow along with excessive rain and snow is not the only place we're expecting the snow. we're expecting for the snow to spread throughout the north central part of the country not only the northwest but going into montana, into the dakotas, wisconsin, as well as minnesota. kendis, mara. >> all right, paul, thanks so much. this morning, the ft. lauderdale airport shooting suspect makes his first court appearance. it comes as we're seeing new video of that horrifying incident. take a look at this airport surveillance video obtained by tmz. it shows the alleged gunman, esteban santiago,

pulling a gun out and firing in the baggage claim area. police say he emptied his semiautomatic weapon and then reloaded. five people died including 84-year-old olga watering. from marietta, georgia. the great-grandmother was with her husband of 64 years celebrating his 90th birthday with a cruise. he survived that shooting. 57-year-old michael oehme from council bluff and terry andres was from virginia beach celebrating his 62nd birthday with a cruise and shirley timmons, she and her husband of 50 years were joining their family for a cruise. he is in critical condition after being shot in the head. >> so many of those people coming off celebrations and to face such tragedies. all right, we're going to move our focus to overseas right now. further retaliation is likely after a truck attack in jerusalem left four israeli soldiers dead. the three women and a man were run down as they exited a bus at

a popular tourist spot in jerusalem's old city. the palestinian driver was shot and killed by police, and authorities have already arrested members of his family and shut down entrances to the neighborhood where he lived. also in overseas news, a televised statement from north korea this morning saying it is now prepared to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile at any time following kim jong-un's message saying his country was in the final stages of firing an icbm. ash carter has vowed to shoot down any north korean missile that flies toward the u.s. or any of its allies. democrats and republicans are battling over ethics reviews for donald trump's cabinet picks as confirmation hearings get under way this week. >> it'll be a busy week. the president-elect has found himself embroiled in yet another war of words. this time he's going head-to-head with actress meryl streep after she slammed him last night during the golden globes. abc's karen travers has more from washington.

war of words, hollywood and politics, karen. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and mara. this was supposed to be about donald trump's cabinet, but hollywood stole the spotlight. meryl streep was not the only actor to criticize donald trump at last night's golden globes but it is her speech that is getting all of the attention this morning and no surprise donald trump quick with a response. >> donald trump's team taking washington by storm this week. eight confirmation hearings for his potential cabinet. but at the golden globes in hollywood, no love for the president-elect. meryl streep in her acceptance speech for a lifetime achievement award blasting trump as a bully without ever saying his name. >> disrespect invites disrespect. violence incites violence. when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose. >> reporter: streep calling out trump for this moment where he seems to mock a disabled reporter on the campaign trail in 2015. >> i don't know what i said. i don't remember.

>> reporter: in an interview with "the new york times," trump said he had not seen the awards show but was not surprised to face criticism from what he called, quote, liberal movie people and a hillary lover. trump and his team also taking heat from democrats in washington who are raising concerns that several of his cabinet nominees have not completed the standard ethics review process. there are two confirmation hearings on tuesday. on wednesday, five more. a top government ethics official is warning lawmakers the pace of the hearings is putting undue pressure on investigators. eight years ago republican leader mitch mcconnell insisted all obama cabinet picks have their background checks and disclosures in before their hearings. now -- >> so all of these little procedural complaints are related to their

"the new york times" reports vw executive oliver schmidt was arrested this weekend and will be arraigned today in detroit. officials say he played an important role in the effort to hide the emissions cheating. the scandal involves 500,000 cars in the u.s. and has already forced vw to pay $16 billion. fiat chrysler is adding 2,000 jobs at its factories in michigan and ohio. the automaker says it will produce three new jeep models in the u.s. and also move a ram heavy-duty pickup now built in mexico to this country. the total investment, $1 billion. u.s. automakers have been under pressure from president-elect donald trump to keep production here. a google owned company is set to begin testing its self-driving minivans this month. they're actually chrysler pacifica hybrids equipped with sensors and radar. waymo says it will not build its own vehicles but it will instead

the man who did it in custody, and he's american. abc news has learned the alleged triggerman behind this hit on that consular official is an american. mexican officials saying the man you see first stalking then co coolly shooting state department official christopher ashcraft is american zia zafar. the 31-year-old ashcraft survived that assassination attempt on friday. mexican special forces taking him into custody. authorities say you see zafar at the parking garage exit waiting for ashcraft's car. when it pulls up he reaches into that pocket. investigators saying he pulled a 9 millimeter pistol but fired only once before fleeing. according to the mexican attorney general's office ashcraft is now in stable condition and under protection at a local hospital. and later on "good morning america," a closer look at what the surveillance video shows in a live report from mexico. breaking overnight, a

new development into that multimillion dollar robbery of kim kardashian. authorities in paris arrested 16 suspects in that case. kardashian was tied up and robbed of $12 million in jewels by a group of masked men in october. the crooks broke into her luxury apartment she was staying at during fashion week. an assistant coach for the pittsburgh steelers is in trouble following an alleged incident after the team's playoff victory against miami over the weekend. outside linebackers coach joey porter is accused of attacking a doorman at a bar following the steelers win. porter is facing several charges including assault and public drunkenness. so far the team has only said it is aware of that incident. and there's some physical evidence of just how upset one member of the giants was last night after his team's loss to the packers. >> yeah, here's that evidence. that's a hole in a wall near the visitors dressing room at green bay's lambeau field. it reportedly is the work of giants receiver odell beckham jr.
