♪ live where you live, thisst "abc 7 news." now at 11:00, we start with an ak you weather alert. live doppler 7 is tracking the new starm that will soak the morning commute. >> and russian river rising. roads are turning into rivers in sonoma county and more wet weather on the way. plus a severe water shortage. the storm busts a pipeline in bay area city and water customers are told to cut back. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm dan ashley. you know the bay area is not getting a break from heavy downpours, gusty winds. we have live team coverage. "abc 7 news" reporter in santa cruz county and sonoma county, two of the areas hardest hit by the latest storm. let's begin with "abc 7

news" meteorologist sandhya patel. >> next in a series of storms is approaching the bay area. take a look, a lot of green on the screen. as we take you into the north bay around santa rosa street level radar, you will notice steady light rain to the north of our santa rosa area near our radar site. you see a lot of hot colors here, this is ground clutter so not heavy rain yet. it will pick up and in marin county, saf raphael, marin wood, you're seeing light steady rain. same around oakland, from ma rind ah to wal net creek see see the rain more skarted from san francisco down towards the peninsula where it is lighter into the south bay where you see spotty showers on street level radar. we are tracking a moist system. we have atmospheric river here and it is heading in our direction. it is a moderate strength storm that arrives tomorrow, brief downpours with flooding with gusty winds with potential of trees and power lines going

down. looking into the morning commute, it will be a slow-going one with pockets of moderate rain and winds increasing. the russian river expected to crest again at 4:00 p.m. wednesday above the flood stage, 36.4 is the forecast, mean moderate flooding. we have a flash looked watch going up that runs until midnight. the north bay, rock and mud slides are possible and a coastal advisory beginning at 8:00 a.m. because of a high tide just about 7 feet combining with localized flooding due to heavy rain. we will be watching for storm concerns. i will be back with a detailed look at that plus your hour-by-hour forecast taking you through wednesday. >> "abc 7 news" reporter cornell barnard continues coverage. >> he is live at the russian river where there has been flooding. >> kristen and dan, it has been raining all night here in

gurnville. the russian river crested leaving many neighborhoods on the south side under water. this is a miniature golf course on drake road. the water slowly receding tonight, but up in the mountains a mud slide forced people from their homes. >> it is a little nerve wracking, keep you up at night. >> reporter: homeowner feared the worse about his home and that's what he got. >> that tree is in the middle of it and it is about to fall. >> reporter: right there? >> yeah. >> reporter: oh, my. >> reporter: a giant mud slide 50 feet wide and two football fields long came crashing down besides his home and on to old mo mon monterio home. his home is red tagged for fear red woods may fall. >> hear the trees cracking, some of the bigger trees fell across it. when the mud would push it would get to a point where it would break and you would hear that and the rocks tumbling down.

>> reporter: the russian river crested at 35 feet, flooding several low lying neighborhoods like drake road. many got out moving cars to higher ground. >> i am scared. >> reporter: flood waters put her backyard under water. she fears more rain will flood her house. >> i say to my relatives, something happen, go up, and sleep in the second floor. >> reporter: in the town of monte rio the russian river is showing its force, submerging homes in its wake, the water slowly receding for now. but when you live here, you don't take chances. >> i have a pan try full of stuff and the freezer. i have a generator and fuel and i'm ready to go. >> reporter: residents are ready for more rain, and it is coming. the russian river expected to crest at 36 feet, as sandy mentioned, on wednesday afternoon. more flooding is very likely. we're live in sonoma county tonight, cornell barnard, "abc 7 news." >> and baug of the rain and flooding, several sonoma county

schools closed tomorrow, including harmony, union, occidental and the gurnsy school district. >> are still blocked after a morning mud slide involving an abc 7 news van. in a split second the van was crushed by rocks, dirt and vegetation as seen in the video shot by a chp officer. our driver driving the van was injured but we're relieved to tell you going to be okay. caltrans has been able to reconfigure the two southbound lanes to give a single lane by pass around the road block. close call. the weekend storm damaged a critical water pipeline in santa cruz. now there's a serious water shortage affecting the entire entire. >> "abc 7 news" reporter katie continues with what it means for the public. >> reporter: dan, kristen, the city is asking people to cut back on their water use by 30% until next monday. they discovered the break this morning. they don't really know exactly how bad it is and they don't

know how long it is going to take to fix it. >> we're looking for a few days of kind of white knuckling it. >> reporter: sunday's storm delivered a double wamy to the water supply. it churned of the river to the point the water is unusable and ruptured the main pipeline that serves as backup plan. >> when these conditions exist we go on loch loma and we lost the connection between the lake and we're down 30% what we can produce. >> reporter: the city is calling it a short-term serious water shortage. not a problem for conservation minded locals like janet find. >> i try to do dishes with less water. >> i plan to cut my use by 30%, because i never stopped using my buckets in the shower anyway. >> reporter: the water district discovered the break after an hours long leak of 1500 gallons a minute. it is not on a major road, which

is in part why it went undetected. at the height of sunday's storm there were 33 roads closed in santa cruz county and there's more rain on the way. >> we expect to see some more slides and maybe slip-outs that will occur over the next week or so. >> reporter: public works plans to ask the santa cruz board of supervisors tomorrow to declare a state of emergency to help get some resources in to repair the roads. in santa cruz, katie marzullo, "abc 7 news." >> thank you. a homeowner faces the job of rebuilding after a large tree crushed part of their house in fairfax. you are looking at the aftermath here following a tree topplin on to a garage along scenic road. that tree also took out pg&e power lines yesterday morning. >> something was out. i didn't know what it was when i first got up. i just, you know -- we have -- that was a big storm. the wind was really blowing. >> it is a difficult road to get out. there are some access issues so we needed to make sure that the

breaking news now from santa cruz. this is new video we just got into abc 7 news room. a woman was rescued from the river just after 10:00 tonight and fierp officials say it is not clear whether the woman fell into the river or if she jumped. the woman complained about pain and hypothermia. the stormy weather obviously making it a dangerous situation. tonight berkley police are

making plans to extradite a cal student in custody in southern california for the murder of a berkley woman. emily aman was found dead on friday. new details from lillian kim live in berkley. lillian. >> reporter: kristen and dan, uc berkley students are still on winter date but getting updates from the university regarding this homicide case since it involves one of their own. >> follow up, has been called. >> reporter: uc berkley students were relieved to learn officers in ber became arrested a fellow student on the run. berkley students say one day before the arrest, pablo gomez jr. stabbed a woman to death on friday after having stabbed another woman who survived the attack, later found on ridge road searching for help. >> not very infrequent, but something of this level, yeah, it is pretty shocking. >> reporter: gomez is a chicano and latino studies at uc berkley

and a fellow at the alliance for climate education. police are not releasing a motive but friends and family of the victim, who they identified as emily inman, say gomez was unknown to her. she was 27 years old, a uc santa cruz graduate who worked as a nature program and middle school science instructor. as for the surviving victim, she is at the hospital in stable condition. >> the fact a student did this, it definitely makes me feel a lot more unsafe walking around campus, especially at night by myself. i think that's one thing all of my friends are talking about. >> reporter: when berkley police bring him to the bay area, gomez faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and murder. in berkley, lillian kim, "abc 7 news." back to our storm watch coverage. a busy day. they were inundated to fix roads and save stranded drivers.

>> were summoned to air lift the driver of a hummer after he was stuck on a rural road. he hoisted him to dry land and he was not injured. a major rock slide closed busy silverado trail in napa county. the slide happened this afternoon and blocked the entire road at pratt avenue as you see from the video. the county recommends taking highway 29 as alternative. yosemite valley will reopen to visitors tomorrow. portions of the national park was closed and employees were evacuated because of the storm. damage to the valley floor was minimal, and it took just a handful of employees today to clean up what problems there were. our abc 7 news viewers have been upset about a historic tree that toppled during the weekend storm. as we told you last night, volunteers at the big tree state park say strong winds and heavy rains were too much for this ancient tree which was a popular tourist atreks since its base was carved out in the 1880s. yeah, hundreds of our abc 7

rainy conditions. in san francisco we are seeing from to the sunset district wet roadways. it will only get worse tomorrow. pacifica, it is light rain, skyline boulevard across 280 into the south bay where we are seeing spotty shadows around campbell, willow glen area and south bay. blue canyon it is switching to sow, about 5,280 feet, and we are expecting the winter storm warning to remain up until thursday at 10:00 a.m. you can see here three to 7 feet of snow expected at the highest elevation, two to 3 feet at 4500 feet. gusty winds mean white out conditions. 126% of normal, which is great news. from abc 7 explorer camera, looking at rain drops on our camera lens from pier 15. in the 50s from san francisco to san jose. a live look from sfo camera, and

this is where tomorrow morning even though the flights are taking off you may encounter major delays due to weather. be prepared. low to mid 50s santa rosa to livermore. it will be bad, no other way to put it, driving it will be rainy and breezy, choppy and wet taking the ferry across the bay. it will be slippery out there so it will be bad. on the storm impact scale it is a two for tomorrow, moderate strength storm, brief downpour expected. watch out for flooding. there's even a chance of thunderstorms. do not leave home without rain boots and umbrellas. storm concerns for stock market, streams and creeks rising rapidly. this is where you will need extra time for the commute. rock and mud slides, river flooding moderate but higher heading into wednesday. tomorrow morning you notice light to moderate rate, at 5:00 a.m. starts to pick up.

by 7:00 it is widespread, as you are taking the kids off to school. at 8:00 a.m. it is will be a rough ride. 10:00 a.m., still pockets of moderate rain. yellows and oranges indicating brief downpours, pinning up for the afternoon and evening commutes. those pops of red are potential for some thunderstorms showing up tomorrow night. that could bring some small hail. wednesday morning still scattered showers going and we continue this theme through wednesday afternoon with another batch coming in wednesday night through thursday. through wednesday afternoon we are looking at areas pick up up from an inch to 2 inches, ben lomand over 4 inches of rain. tomorrow is breedsy, close to 30 miles an hour, but by the afternoon close to 40 mile an hour wind gusts. high wind warning tuesday 12:00 p.m. to midnight. higher elevations could see gusts over 65 miles an hour. lower elevations, 45 mile an hour gusts could take down trees

and power lines. 50s for the afternoon, 40s for the morning. 50s, 60s and the seven day forecast, a two on the impact. we dry out friday and through the weekend and holiday monday is dry.
