face tough questions on everything from conflicts of interest to race relations and russia and trump is raising concerns with his latest hire, he looked in the family, his son-in-law landing an official white house position. abc's karen travers has more from washington. karen, good morning to you. >> good morning, kendis and diane. it is going to be an incredibly busy day on capitol hill as lawmakers get their first chance to question donald trump's cabinet nominees. now, the pace of this confirmation process has been very fast. but republicans say they want trump to have as many senior positions filled as possible on day one. donald trump's cabinet picks gearing up for a grilling. on the hot seat retired marine general john kelly tapped to be secretary of homeland security. and alabama senator jeff sessions, trump's choice for attorney general. sessions' hearing could be confrontational. 35 years ago he was rejected for a federal judgeship over allegations he made racist remarks. charges he forcefully denies.

state we're learning new details about the ft. lauderdale airport killings. abc news learned the suspect initially planned to fly to new york city on new year's eve. he canceled his reservation and made his first court appearance monday. his ex-girlfriend's daughter offering an apology to the victims' families. >> my deepest condolences to the innocent people who lost their lives and/or were injured. my heart's warm effort sinceres go out to their friends, families, my mother's brothers and sisters. >> he's due back in court next week. and the suspect in the ambush-style shooting of an american diplomat in mexico is back in the united states. the victim was shot and wounded while in a car friday captured on surveillance cameras. investigators are still trying to figure out the motive but a preliminary investigation found the suspect an american med student has mental health issues and also media reports the shooting was related to visa

being blamed for last month's deadly chair lift dent in colorado. the chair carrying kelly huber and her two daughters struck a support tower at a resort near denver. all three fell 25 feet into hard packed snow. huber was killed and her daughters injured. witnesses say the lift was constantly getting stuck in the days prior to the accident. a long and bizarre car chase across los angeles finally ended early this morning. the man drove erratically and at varying speeds, sometimes shouting and gesturing out the window. he also threw clothing and other objects out the car and fired shots as well at the police who were pursuing him, and they were very patient, but then sharpshooters in suvs were called in, and those big vehicles were used to box in the car, and he was arrested peacefully. big changes are ahead for yahoo! if verizon goes through with the deal to purchase its web holdings. it would say good-bye to its ceo marissa mayer, co-founder david phyllo and four other board members. the remaining would be called altaba while verizon is expected to continue using the yahoo!

now, authorities are trying to determine if the driver passed kardashian's exact movements to the gang of thieves. well, the makers of a popular memory supplement are facing fraud charges. federal rag laters and new york's attorney general say the makers of prevagen are falsely advertising it as a memory booster, and it has no scientific backing to support that claim. the company insists its product works and calls the federal trade commission a lame duck agency. a new alert about detecting breast cancer. a controversial new danish concludes that one in three women with breast cancer detected by a mammogram are treated unnecessarily. the study found that the women had slow-growing tumors that didn't need treating because they were essentially harmless and researchers followed thousands of danish women for more than a decade before coming up with these new findings. we have some new video to

that's where the best radar returns are right now. let's take a look at our day plan as we look from our roof camera. so a slight tapering at 7:00 but by noon, the storms become stronger, the winds become faster, heavy downpours this afternoon and even some thunder possible in brief, even heavier downpours during the evening hours. i'll go over the watches and warnings coming up next. >> lehere hees a look at the hey rain in the east way, this is the bay bridge toll plaza, just pour if anythi pouring if you look under those street lamps. the hydroplaning, a serious issue this morning. and taking you down to highway 17, santa cruz mountains, we still have the one-way traffic control in effect there in those southbound lanes. the northbound side still blocked by the landside so basically they're splitting that southbound side. and a mess for people near the russian river this morning, the rise in water has flooded

homes and cars. >> abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is on her way to guerneville. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning. yes, and it's raining here and on our route here in marin county, hard to imagine guerneville getting more rain. here's what it looks like, what we're expecting to find when we get there. the russian river did crest yesterday at 35 feet, flooding several homes, threatening many more. we also saw a mud slide that happened there and met a hom homeowner who had to leave his home and it has been red tagged. >> we're going to at least red tag it for a couple of days until it starts to dry out and then see what they're doing. it's hard to tell. it's all so soupy. >> reporter: homeowners have evacuated because of the threat of trees falling, of mud slides and also the flooding and many tell us they're dreading more rain. theyre
