to 48 countries starting with the 2026 edition of the tournament. it makes it more inclusive, they say. those are the top stories on this wednesday, january 11th. from abc news, this is "world news now." hello to you. we'll start this half hour with potentially damaging allegations about secret ties apparently between russia and the president-elect, donald trump. just nine days before he's sworn in. >> the claims are unsubstantiated but are being investigated by the fbi. they accuse his aides of possibly helping in the hacking of the democratic party. trump labeled the story as fake news on twitter. brian ross explains why this is coming to light now. >> we've been trying to verify anything here and the facts we were able to corroborate weren't

there. that one of trump's lawyers met in prague, he said i've never been to prague in my life. operatives of the democratic party have been trying to get this to go public since before the election and even after. it's coming out now because of the briefing last week to president obama and president-elect trump. they were told about some of these allegations as an example of some of the things the russians might do. the point was they didn't do it to trump to underscore the point of the fbi. they thought nothing could be verified but when they came up in the senate confirmation hearings, it became a legitimate story. >> it came from anonymous sources deep inside the kremlin. an fbi official said they were too salacious to not be investigated. and now to obama saying good-bye in his hometown of chicago. >> he walked out to what was a

regular rain beginning to surge along with mild air coming out of the ohio valley region. our thanks to paul. to an incident out of oklahoma city. police are trying to find a man accused of an attempted kidnapping at a wrestling tournament. they're hoping he doesn't do the same thing again. they release video showing the incident. a man putting an 8-year-old in a bear hug and trying to get away with him. the boy was kicking and screaming the entire time before the man eventually dropped him. some best buy geek squad employees have been moonlighting as fbi informants. the payments were made in kentucky over a four year period from 2008 to 2012. a formal relationship, but they said there's a moral and legal obligation to inform about some material. walmart plans to eliminate 1,000 jobs by the end of the

coveri covering the extreme weather in the west, a second major rainstorm battering northern california causing flooding in many areas. some residents had to be evacuated as the russian river overflowed. residents say this is the worst they've seen in years. the river is expected to rise more than six feet above flood stage by tonight. there's also more snow in oregon. another 8 to 14 inches by this afternoon and even more south. workers are using a giant snow blower to clear a highway along the gorge. they say this type of snow is not safe to clear with a regular plow. most schools are closed today in the area. the white supremacist who gunned down church goers in south carolina was sentenced to death. the jury of dylann roof reached a unanimous sentence.

it took nearly three hours of deliberations. he told jurors that life in prison wasn't worth the effort. he said that he plans to appeal and he also faces a state trial. now, dozens gathered in orlando to remember a police officer gunned down in the line of duty. a man hunt is underway for the suspect who allegedly murdered deborah clayton. she was shot after she approached the man. a reward for information leading to the arrest is up to $100,000. the executives of backpage.com are apparently refusing to cooperate in a congressional investigation into sex trafficking. called to testify yesterday about whether the site is running sex trafficking ads and helping to conceal them, the executives took the fifth amendment. >> reporter: backpage.com is denying any involvement in sex trafficking but the classified ad site shut down the adult
