after days of rain and flooding, the rivers and the creeks around the bay area are finally starting to recede but that does not mean that the trouble is over, by any means. good afternoon, everybody. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama daetz. this is from our east bay hills camera. let's check in with spencer christian. >> i'm happy to say there's not much left of today's storm. you can see we have pockets of light rain and scattered showers, although there have been a couple of brief downpours in the last few minutes but it's all winding down, i'm happy to say. let's go out to the area of the russian river which has had a

flood warning the last couple of days. the river level is receding a bit. we still have a flood warning in effect, however, until 2:48 a.m. the flooding has not ended you about an update on the current levels. the river is just a few inches above flood stage and expected to drop below flood stage in the next hour. a flood warning remains in effect until 2:48 a.m. there's another area we want to focus on between watsonville and las lomas. that expires at 10:15 tonight in that area. 5:00 this afternoon, into the evening hours we see pockets of showers and light rain fade away giving way to partial clearing. so that will be the end of the rain for a while and i'll show you what the week ahead looks like for a few minutes. larry? >> spencer, thank you. all you have to do is download

the abc7 news app. san jose firefighters rescued a man trapped by the fast-flowing water of coyote creek. >> he had been stranded there for two days. we're talking about 48 hours in your car. more than 20 water rescues have taken place since the weekend. >> katie utehs is there to explain the danger that still exists even though the rain has stopped. katie? >> reporter: ama, it's sunny and nice out but the creek is deceptively swift. right now it's moving very fast. this was the scene of the rescue earlier today. firefighters have been working around the clock actually pulling people from floodwaters. sky 7 shows a coyote creek. >> for example, it could move your car across the roadway.

it's a lot of force. it's moving much faster than that right now. >> reporter: a man trapped on a an island created by high water levels yelled for help around 11:00 this morning. he spent the last two days stranded near ranch dry and north mccarthy boulevard. >> his body temperature is probably low. we don't know that. he's being assessed and will probably be taken to a local hospital. >> reporter: he's not the only one that underestimated the storm runoff. >> you saw that? >> yeah. >> that was scary. i went and grabbed you. >> you did a good job. >> reporter: the santa clara county sheriff's office shared the video on facebook. he made the rescue along las gatos trail yesterday. >> reporter: they rescued people all week. >> we took 15 people from the

hollister area out of homes and three or four people from cars. >> reporter: more than 20 people have been rescued and all of them are okay. in the south bay, katie utehs, abc7 news. we're getting a different perspective from the roadway that was washed away over alhambra valley road. the breach is 70 feet wide and 30 feet deep. you can see the drone as it flies into that gap. check this out. the road is closed indefinitely. county public works crews don't know when repairs will begin. >> that's an amazing view right there. highway 37 in novato is still closed today. you can see much of the flooding has subsided but part of the road is still covered in water. the marin county sheriff's department posted this picture

of the dive team and chp helpin to clear cars that were stranded in the water. at least three cars got stuck after trying to drive through the flooded roadways, which they tell you over and over again, don't do that. more than 100 hollister residents are cleaning up. >> the pacheco creek spilled into farmland and backyards. lonnie rivera has a look at how families are dealing with the cleanup. lonnie? >> reporter: yes, larry and ama. this is what people are dealing with today. huge puddles like this. actually, two homes along this street have been red-tagged because they are not safe because of the damage from yesterday's rain and because of no power. but meantime, people are coming together in this close-knit community helping each other recover.

hollister residents carefully traveled through the puddles. there was flood damage after the pacheco creek rose 20 feet flooding farmland and backyards. >> the floors are pretty well saturated with dirty water. the unfortunate thing is, we were remodeling so we had a bunch of stuff on the ground. >> reporter: this is one of the rescuers who willingly took in 18 cows and four horses. >> you couldn't tell how deep it was and rivers were going. we're running around trying to get the cattle and i went in probably hip-deep. >> reporter: she was happy to help out a few neighbors needing a safe place for their cattle. >> there was nothing keeping them between the roads and there were lakes everywhere. i think one of them was killed. >> reporter: the creek backed up from overgrown brush. water had nowhere to go but over its banks into the community. >> it overflowed and there's a lot of debris that may need to

driveway into a wheelbarrow after the river crested, this looked like progress. >> yeah. it flowed around here and hit the curb there and was making a big whirlpools out here. it was fun. i took pictures. >> reporter: did you catch any fish? >> didn't see any fish. it's very muddy, you know, it's like coffee color. >> reporter: ann and her husband figure 15-inch deep water passed through yesterday. even the river that usually flows hundreds of feet away d dabbled at their doorstep. >> this is the price you pay. >> reporter: this golf course has new water holes and bruce mcconnell returned with his little boat today. this is what it is until it won't be anymore until the next time. around here, there's something beautiful about that. wayne freedman, abc7 news.

all of this rain has resulteded in the end of the five-year drought in california. >> the question is, will that last? matt keller has the details. >> reporter: it's raining has been followed by the phrase, we sure need it, for the past five years. however, you can officially say you're tired of the rain. the entire bay area is no longer in a drought. that means the santa clara water district will evaluate keeping its water savings target at 20%. >> all of the indications are very good right now. we are going to be re-evaluating where we are going forward. we are running the models to see how does this look for our water supply into 2017. >> reporter: six reservoirs in santa clara county are spilling. others are above seismic restriction levels and must release water to get below those limits. ground water supplies are getting a big boost. officials saw a significant

increase in 2016, putting levels at the bottom of the normal range with more gains expected in 2017. but even with all this rain, water officials say the recent conservation efforts have really paid off. they are hoping people will stick with the plan, rain or shine. >> we don't know what's around the corner. next year could be dry again. all of those good habits that people have formed over the last four or five years really should continue. >> reporter: santa clara county residents really responded to the calls for water conservation with a 28% drop in use when you compare it to 2013. water officials here will meet at the end of the month to decide if they will stick with that 20% water conservation target. in san jose, matt keller, abc7 news. >> even though the bay area is out of the drought, you can see from this map, much of central and southern california still in a moderate to severe drought. fremont police are

investigating a crash that killed a 96-year-old woman this morning. the car the woman was driving collided with a pickup truck on fremont boulevard and parish avenue. her identity has not been released. the pickup truck driver is cooperating with the investigation. drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident. also in fremont, the mission boulevard offramp to 880 is back open following a hazardous materials situation. it was closed this morning after a pickup truck carrying pool-cleaning supplies crashed into barrels. the chemicals spilled. a caltrans company cleaned up the mess. the driver was arrested on suspicion of dui. it was emotional forks sure. >> emotion running high for fans as the chargers announce they are moving out of town. what it could mean for raiders

chargers' fans who supported this team for 50 years despite this has been a poorly run franchise. in this case, the value of the franchise may increase by a billion dollars but the coach will have to pay a fee to relocate. take that money and put it into a deal in san diego and stay in a place where people love your team los angeles doesn't. they had no nfl team for two decades. now they are going to have two. in fact, they have two really bad teams. the chargers have little fan support in los angeles. but you know who does? the raiders. and l.a. is now officially off the table for them. owner mark davis appears to be all in on vegas. this chargers move shows that the nfl doesn't care about you. it doesn't care about me. the fans, we're all irrelevant as randy moss once famously

on wednesday, a storm is ranking 1 on the impact scale. a stronger storm on tuesday is ranking at 2. heavy downpours, very windy. rainfall totals up to about an inch with that storm. drought monitor shows that the bay area is essentially out of the drought, although we have dry areas in the inland east bay and south bay. for most of the state, conditions are improving but the exceptional drought conditions are down in southern california. 35% of southern california is drought-free. a nice spell of sun. clouds increase on tuesday, heavier rain conditions on thursday. i'll show you when we come back the forecast for the tahoe area. there may not be more snow falling for a while. >> probably okay with that. we have five days to dry out here. >> absolutely. >> thanks, spencer. there was a touching moment today at the white house. >> a grateful nation thanks vice

and here are the stories making headlines at 4:30 after days of rain, flooding remains an issue as water recedes around the bay area. floodwaters in guerneville is affecting the nearby community. flooding these past few days has been an issue across the bay area. as katie utehs tweets, rescuers had to assist a man in milpitas. honda is adding 772,000 vehicles to an ongoing recall related to defective airbag inflators manufactured by takata. this involves 17 automakers. as many as 16 people have died.

the senate is taking up three new nominations to president-elect donald trump's cabinet and russia has been a major topic of discussion. at his hearing today, stanford's hoover institute james mattis calls russia lana zak is in washington. >> reporter: one thing that has remained consistent is questions about russia. questions about russia are now a kind of litmus test for cabinet nominees. >> there's a decreasing number of areas where we can engage cooperatively and an increasing number of areas where we're going to have to confront russia. >> reporter: general james mattis, the pick to head up the department of defense, established himself as his own man, unafraid to take different positions on russia and iran,

she says on january 20th she will instead be organizing and preparing for resistance. she joins a list of at least five other representatives who will not be attending. authorities in baltimore are investigating the cause of a fire, a house fire that left six children dead. the fire broke out overnight in a three-story home in a northeast baltimore neighborhood. those kids, they range in age from 9 months to 11 years old. and they are all members of the same family. the mother and three other children were able to escape. she's in the hospital listed in critical condition as are two of the children. the third child was released. the father happened to be at work at the time. the mom has been identified as katie malone, a long-time staff member of elijah cummings. authorities in arizona shot and killed a passerby who shot a trooper this morning. he ordered the gunman to stop

the attack. when the suspect refused, the passerby grabbed his own gun and opened fire, killing him. the trooper was taken to the hospital where he's in stable condition. the 27-year veteran trooper was ambushed while investigating a traffic accident. the faa is investigating a video that show as drone slamming into seattle's space needle. we're going to pause it for you to point out two workers there. the drone just barely missed. my goodness. the drone's owner went looking for it but space needle security gave it to police. that owner now face as $5,000 fine and nearly a year in jail for reckless endangerment. still to come on abc7 news at 4:00 a. l, a lot of snow cam the sierra. i'm spencer christian from our emeryville camera, that is

snowslide. a woman took this video. pay attention to this kitchen area. because that's the area that's going to get totally obliterated. watch. the explosion of snow will come from the right. wait for it. bam. you see that? in just a matter of seconds, look at that, the whole kitchen is covered. the range, cabinets, everything completely destroyed. you probably want to see it again. i'm going to show it to you one more time without my arrow there. samantha says actually four homes were hit by the same avalanche last night. it will be a while before they can remove all of the snow and board up the home. this follows another dramatic avalanche on tuesday. this was in the alpine meadows area. this is the roofline right there. completely covered in snow. and here's the view from the inside. that same wall of snow, up to 20

feet completely blocking his door after the controlled avalanche. the danger is still considerable at all elevations. look at that. they continue to set off controlled slides. meantime, most ski slopes are reopening. they expect safe conditions this long weekend. larry and ama? >> all of that video is amazing and so is this. a double trailer fedex rig slid down part of interstate 80 in the sierra this morning. this was caught on camera by highway patrol officers who guided the truck sideways down the grade. it happened in nevada county. the big rig jackknifed and the brakes locked up. faced with a decision to wait hours for a tow truck, the driver rolled down the hill going sideways. if you're familiar with drifting, that's essentially what he's doing. it's a form of driving sideways. the highway patrol kept other

cars away and the truck actually made it down just fine. into well, this is one of many trucks that found itself stranded in the snowy conditions in the sierra. it was one of many trucks rescued by the highway patrol. it took the help of two chp expeditions to help this truck up a steep portion of interstate 80. once they were at the top, the driver was cited for not having chains. we have light cscattered showers. most locations receive .02 up to 6 inches. meanwhile, here's your four-day weekend forecast. over in tahoe, if you're headed out that way, light snow early tomorrow morning. it's going to be chilly with highs only in the low to mid-30s. a little milder through the

$250,000 in restitution and pay one year in jail. many of the victims protested when the judge left open the option of community service and home detention. but that request ultimately denied. and tonight, lopez is scheduled to turn himself in to the north county detention facility. 7 on your side began investigating lopez in 2013. he had a false promise he would get their mortgage reduced. we successfully got the attention of the state attorney general's office. lopez is challenging the restitution order which will be heard in march. apple just released a fix for a battery line problem with its new macbook pro. this was uncovered during a test of the new laptop. consumer reports has retested to see if the repair is working and the initial tests have found

for the monks at the holy cross monastery. eric? >> reporter: local traffic can get through here but through traffic is still shut down. folks we're talking about live several miles up this road in an isolated canyon where they rely on landlines. cell phone service is nonexistent. >> still dead. >> reporter: and the phones have been that way since tuesday afternoon at the holy cross monastery outside castro valley. >> it's very primitive. >> reporter: they are used to going without some comforting but no landline out here could mean trouble because there's no cell phone service. >> tough drive out of the canyon five miles to the south if it were open but the road is blocked so you have to go seven miles north to get your cell phone to work so you can call in. >> reporter: sporadic power

outages have meant no power and no way to heat the building in a canyon where it's 10 to 15 degrees cooler than surrounding areas so they are literally praying for return to normal. a couple of miles down the road, rain and swollen creeks helped bring down two huge eucalyptus trees that landed in kathy's front yard tuesday afternoon while she watched horrified. >> heard the crack and then looked up and saw it starting to fall and just kind of ran out of the way. >> reporter: one tree narrowly missed the chickens she keeps and landed a few feet away from her home. she's waiting for the county to come and clear things away. meantime, at&t crews have been working hard to restore phone service. in alameda county, eric thomas, abc77 news. >> you can get the latest news any time with the abc7 news app.
