president-elect on russia and vladimir putin. >> if putin likes donald trump, i consider that an asset, not a liability. we have a horrible relationship with russia. >> reporter: a very different tone from trump's pick for secretary of defense. >> mad dog mattis. >> reporter: retired general james mattis declaring russia is a threat. >> i'm all for engagement, but we have to recognize reality and what russia is up to. >> reporter: insisting putin wants to break up nato and america must defend itself. >> we can engage cooperative and an increasing number of areas where we have to confront russia. >> reporter: the general's words welcomed by john mccain. >> i appreciate his expressing his candid views to the committee. >> reporter: do you think the president-elect will take his advice? do you hope he takes his advice? >> i'm supposed to answer that? >> reporter: just one floor up

testifying at his confirmation hearing for cia director, congressman mike pompeo also drawing a harder line on russia than the president-elect. on the dnc hacking, trump's finally conceded it was russia. >> as far as hacking, i think it was russia. >> reporter: and then he said. >> but it could have been others also. >> reporter: but from pompeo, no hesitation. >> it's pretty clear about what took place there about russian involvement in efforts to hack information and to have an impact on american democracy. >> reporter: some republicans concerned about the conflicting signals coming out of the new administration. >> we live in very dangerous times. the last thing i want to do is send a mixed message to putin. >> reporter: the president-elect signalled he's not likely to take graham's advice. >> lindsey graham. i've been competing with him for a long time, and he's going to crack that 1% barrier one day. i didn't realize lindsey graham is still at it. >> reporter: lindsey graham is one of at least three republican senators who say they are undecided on tillerson. he described his relationship with putin as very close and graham says tillerson has to be able to punch russia in the

face. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. >> russia is lashing out at the u.s. after u.s. and nato troops moved into poland. thousands of soldiers with armored vehicles arrived at a polish military base where they will be for several days. this is the first continuous deployment to the area. russia is calling the move a threat to its security. >> reporter: james comey is under scrutiny as a review is under way after the handling of the hillary clinton e-mail investigation. the justice department's inspector general is trying to see if protocol was violated. comey announced he was looking into the e-mails just days before the election. and earlier he had admonished clinton at a news conference while announcing she will not face charges. comey says he made that tough

decision based on bad options while balancing the need for transparency. a week before leaving office, president obama has ended a long standing special immigration policy for cubans. the wet foot dry foot rule allowed cubans to make it to the u.s. soil to stay in the country as legal residents. the u.s. and cuba were working together on the deal as relations normalized. cubans turned away by the united states will be allowed to return home. a member of the first family is now accused of attacking a white house visitor. first dog sunny. he's the culprit. reportedly biting one of malia obama's friends according to tmz which also provided these graphic photos. the 18-year-old girl tried to kiss the dog when she turned on her. clearly, you can see by the photos there. leaving a cut on her left eye. tmz said the teen was checked out by the family doctor who

officers all declining to testify. just hours before the hearing backpage shut down the entire adult services section. replacing the pages with a banner saying the government has unconstitutionally censored this content. >> reporter: some anti-trafficking group said it was a critical tool depended on america's vice detectives to locate and recover missing children. the electronic frontier foundation says the invasive burdensome inquiry into the the editorial practices creates an intense chilling effect for any website operator seeking to define their own moderation procedures for the third party content they host. just as quickly as backpage's adult section was shut down, we found similar ads on other parts of the site, like on the men

>> if the election was held ten days earlier prior to the letter, hillary clinton would be the 45th president of the united states. >> reporter: and just this week comey was asked if the fbi's investigating whether president-elect's team had any contact with the russians during the campaign. >> i would never comment on investigations whether we have one or not in an open forum like this. >> reporter: he was pressed again. >> you didn't say if there's investigation underway. >> correct. especially in a public forum, we never confirm or deny a pending investigation. >> the irony of your making that statement here, i cannot avoid. >> reporter: was there a double standard? was protocol ignored? the inspector general signaling their investigate. >> were you comfortable in your role in the election? >> reporter: he said he'll cooperate and has not to hide and he wants to be transparent. joe biden confirmed he was briefed about the allegations that russia compromised

president-elect donald trump. biden said intelligence officials told them they didn't know if the claims were true or not. however, they were concerned the information might become public and catch them off guard. biden also criticized trump for criticizing the intelligence agency. two people at odds with president-elect when it comes to vladimir putin and his country. trump's pick for defense secretary retired general james mattis minced no words saying that russia is the nation's number one security threat. mattis took particular aim at russian president vladimir putin accusing him of trying to break up nato and unlike mr. trump, mattis said his expectations for cooperation with russia are modest at best. >> i'm all for engagement, but we also have to recognize reality and what russia is up to. there's a decreasing number of areas where we can engage cooperatively and an increasing

number of areas where we're going to have to confront russia. >> and despite trump's skepticism that russian hacking interfered with the election, mike pompeo did not hesitate. he told lawmakers that the hacking was an aggressive action taking by senior leadership inside russia. >> it's pretty clear about what took place, about russian involvement in efforts to hack information and to have an impact on american democracy. >> one more note about defense secretary nominee, the armed services committee in the house and the full senate voted to give mattis a one time exception from the law that prevents former military members from serving as defense secretary unless they've been out of uniform for at least seven years. mattis retired in 2013, less than four years ago. so this was interesting yesterday. did you see this? a lot of people on social media talking about this.
