temperatures today mid and upper 50s. increasing clouds. maybe a passing shower tonight. we'll talk about the heavier rain the second half of the upcoming work week. developing news, the chp issued an alert about an endangered and missing child in brooklyn. he was reported missing at 4:30 friday afternoon. tammy martin is driving a blue minivan with a dented rear passenger side panel. if you see them, please contact the oakland police department. developing news out of san francisco. fire crews rescued two people who were skinny dipping in the ocean beneath the cliff house. rescue personnel arrived, one person was in the water and another on the cliff. a naked man was taken away for observation. it's believed the late night adventure was fueled by alcohol.

protests caused the cancellation of a talk by two controversial speakers. conservative comment tailor milo yiannopoulos and pharmaceutical executive martin shkreli were slated to speak on the campus but never got a chance. katy was there. >> reporter: protesters blocked the doors. police tossed them out. nobody got inside. not even the headliner. conservative commentator milo yiannopoulos. >> we came here to have an event that would promote free speech. and we didn't get to have any speech. >> reporter: the 400 free tickets went quick. not just the students. brandon tony james drove in from skrm. >> milo is a rising young conservative star. >> reporter: others did not. >> milo adjusts how everything has to say, to bring people down. it's not what we should stand for as a community. >> reporter: nearly 60 uc police

officers worked to control the crowd. making one arrest for obstructing an officer and battery of a peace officer. organizers made the call to cancel. >> the student adviser, at a certain point the officers' lives became at risk and their school property was at risk. >> reporter: pharmaceutical executive martin shkreli was also scheduled to speak, made it to the venue. >> milo's anti-feminism. i'm pro-feminism. i don't think people know that. i was going to tear milo to shred that he doesn't understand feminism. >> reporter: he took jeers from the crowd and selfies with the curious. >> very controversial in a lot of his opinions are very different than what people like. >> reporter: meanwhile, yiannopoulos posted that he's staying in sacramento and invited people out. a university spokesman said no property was damaged during the protest. in davis, abc 7 news.

in the east bay, our emory vt camera caught this police chase that started just before 9:45 last night. you can see the sheriff's deputies following the car here. even turned off its lights, right there. at one point to try to throw off the deputies. one of the deputies crashed at the maze. no word on any arrests. a 36-year-old woman is under arrest after a crash that killed a man in san carlos. it happened about 6:30 last night. investigators say a woman called the dispatch center to say she hit something but left the scene. the victim has not been identified. they say he had been drinking, though, before he walked onto the freeway. the off-ramp was closed during that investigation but reopened at 10:15 last night. now to the storm watch and good news for people in novato. cal trans opened one lane of eastbound highway 37.

the highway had been closed for three days. video posted by the chp yesterday showed how much the water has receded thanks to cal tran's pumping machines. you can see it's looking much better than a few days ago when the cones were under two feet of water and three cars were stuck there. a castro valley teenager is lucky to be alive but mourning the loss of her best friend. they were headed to castro valley wednesday night when their car hydroplaned and ran off the highway and plunged into the outlet creek. both women were conscious by the vehicle quickly filled with water. only griffin made it out alive. she survived by clinging to a tree 100 yards away from shore for 12 hours through the entire night before swimming back to shore. and flagging down a car. this is what it looked like at the lick observatory yesterday on mount hamilton. there is still snow around from the past few days. the roads could be icy again

traditions about conflicts of interest that other presidents have adhered to, then we've got real problems. >> reporter: he's joining two other colleagues who announced they would not be attending. oakland congresswoman barbara lee issued a release saying in part, i will not be celebrating or honoring an incoming president who rode racism, sexism and seen a phobiaism to the white house. members of congress across the country have announced they're boycotting including georgia representative john lewis. >> i don't see the president-elect as a legitimate president. >> reporter: and concern about his ties to russia. there are key members of the bay area's congressional delegation who will be going, including representative jackie spear and minority leader nancy pelosi. congressman desalnia said he will still be busy.

>> i'll have events with local democratic clubs in lafayette to talk about issues like this, and how they can express themselves legally. >> reporter: so he likely won't even watch the inauguration from home. abc 7 news. be dan ashley will be in washington, d.c. next thursday and friday with live reports on president-elect trump's inauguration. current tesla owners don't pay for electricity to power their cars, but new ones will. the pricing plan for the super chargers, if you buy a tesla after sunday you'll end up paying. katie mar zulo explains. >> this is free electricity right now. eventually they have to charge. >> reporter: most tesla owners we talked to don't have a problem to paid for charging their cars. >> just to do a cross-country trip, it would only be like a hundred bucks anyway. so that's much more affordable

cha. he shot sean moore in the stomach and groin eight days ago after he punched and kicked two other officers. they were called to the home for a restraining order violation. he is in intensive care but is conscious. good news for city college of san francisco. nbc 7 news was at the college last night as school officials formally announced accreditation has been extended for another seven years. the 19-member commission overseeing the college's status had been threatening to shut the school down for the past four years. they appointed to the fiscal management. school officials can't wait to put that behind them and focus on education. >> we want to reach out, we want to bring people back and find new students who have something that they can benefit from here at city college. a certificate, a transfer degree, or even just a class that's going to make their lives better or make them more successful in their career. >> enrollment over the past four years has dropped from 100,000 to around 65,000.

new details this morning about cal and former wisconsin defense coordinator justin wilcox. espn is reporting cal and wilcox have reached an agreement for wilcox to become the bears' next football coach. he was a cal assistant from 2003 and 2005. he will replace sunny dikes who was fired last sunday. wilcox's salary information was not released. a group of employees from a sport shop in concord are called champions of humanity. it starts with a man's obsession-a pair of nikes and ended with an act of kindness. >> reporter: at times the employees of this champs sports store thought they were stuck on groundhog day. almost every day a 28-year-old man would look around the store and ask to try on the same pair of shoes. >> 10, 12 times. just periodically coming in. can i get these. can i try these on.

but he never tried them on. that's the funny part. >> reporter: every time he would stand in line to pay only to leave the shoes at the cash register and walk away, unable to afford them. that's when an employee invited him to try on the shoes one more time. fernando and his co-workers did something out of the kindness of their hearts. they raised enough money to buy him those shoes, and more. one of the employees took the cell phone video of the moment tyree tried on the shoes. >> i gave him the shoes and he tried them on. he was like, how much are they? they're $160. don't worry about it, just try them on. that's when we surprised him. >> reporter: when fernando told him the shoes were his, tyree thought he was kidding. >> he was just like, wow, i'm getting shoes. it was really cool. we knew that he was happy about it. >> reporter: the 28-year-old man was also given a cap, a hoodie and athletic pants. >> it wasn't just me. it was everyone in the champs,

had in the past couple of mornings for some of you. 33 in santa rosa. 37 napa. mid-30s in novato. concord, good morning, 37. finally, we're looking at some pretty nice sunshine up above the low cloud deck. it's going to burn off. we'll see a lot of sunshine. but it's frosty, black ice earlier. we have a weak weather system that will parallel the coast tonight. that could provide a few showers from san mateo, marin, sonoma, napa probably while you're sleeping, waking up to maybe morning mist and drizzle. heavy rain heads our way but it will be brief on wednesday. a break somewhat on thursday. and more rain on friday. i think the successive nature of the system will allow for more drainage and less hydroplaning problems. gusty nds, heavy downpours and lighter rain to start out the afternoon. this is 11:00 on wednesday. as we go through the day, it picks up wednesday night. this is when the winds kick in as well. leftover rain for thursday.

but an all-important break, because friday, had efier rain, but then it seems to clear out late on friday. you add in 30 to 40 even 50-mile-an-hour winds as we go through your wednesday night. and of course, that's what we're worried about with the saturated ground. rainfall amounts anywhere from one to two inches at this point. it will be brief. we will see the heavier downpours. that means we'll get the ruboff which is not a good thing. underneath the sunny skies today, it will be nice. mid to upper 50s. we have temperatures in the sierra nevada going up over the holiday weekend. looking at the teens, overnight lows, low 40s. the problem with that is when the rain gets going here, it's going to start out as rain in the mountains, then change over to snow on wednesday. the accuweather seven-day forecast, sunny first half of the week. second half of the week will be wet. you can track the rain with our abc 7 news app.

geological survey believe a major beneficiary of the recent storms will be the beaches around santa cruz. scientists were in the water yesterday tracking sand being washed down the san lorenzo river. >> reporter: you've got all the dash lines. a couple of the dash lines in there. this is a project that takes scientists working on land, in boats and on jet skis. their mission, to map the massive amount of sand they believe has been washed from the mountains by recent storms down the san lorenzo river to santa cruz. >> when we wonder about climate change and how rainfall may change in the future, how the severity of storms may increase or decrease in the future, that will give us a good indication of how much sand will be entering the system and how our beaches will save and how we can help sustain those beaches. >> reporter: the team believes the recent storms have moved as many as 1,000 to 3,000 dump truckloads of sand to the coast.

using echo sound and gps and light radar, they map movement over time. researchers say with storm track shifting north and rain patterns changing, their work will help coastal communities to prepare for the future. jet skis may be designed for thrills, but mounted with high-tech devices, they can do serious work directed by ground-based team members. >> they're pretty good about telling you where they want you to go. you never get lost. it's the least amount of fun you can have on a jet ski, but it's still a day on a jet ski. >> reporter: it looked like this sea otter was oblivious to the serious work. the scientists will reverify their data, a process that could take several months. abc 7 news. a new detail about a machete attack at a b.a.r.t. station. san francisco police have released these pictures of the suspect. on january 6th at the civic

center station, the suspect slashed the head and hand of a man from southern california, causing severe cuts. now, the suspect is described as being between 30 and 40 years old, about 5'11", 200 pounds. he's considered armed and dangerous. if you see him, don't approach him. just call 911. people in the north bay may be at risk of meng nights after a man died from the infection. melanie woodrow has more about the man who passed away. >> reporter: phillips passed away this past saturday from meng nights. marin health and human services sent letters to approximately 250 people who may have had contact with him, including other soul cycle marin riders where phillips worked out in larkspur. >> you hear meningitis, and think uh-oh. >> reporter: a spokesperson writes, we are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our riders. while the rider did not contract

around discovery bay, antioch, northeastern alameda county, as well as northeastern contra costa county could see flooding here, lasting until 11:30. mount tam, it is sunny. but boy, that fog has been stubborn. 45 in san francisco. going to take some time to warm up. from emoryville, yeah, you certainly have the fog there as well. 33, that's where you've been sitting in santa rosa. novato 37. as well as concord. with 35 in livermore. santa cruz, dropped down to 35 degrees. 58 later today. so cold this morning. with some frost and fog. weak weather system will parallel the coast tonight. that could bring a chance of some light showers from the san mateo coast, into san francisco, marin, sonoma, and napa. then it moves on out. could wake up with morning drizzle on sunday. it remains relatively dry for

most of the forecast. that's into sunday, monday and tuesday. then downpours headed our way wednesday through friday. these systems are quick movers. we'll bring in the storm impact scale. wednesday will be a 2. strong gusty winds. the possibility of some flooding issues. we're so saturated it will likely be runoff and we're also looking at those tree roots, right at the surface. with the gusty winds and the heavy rain, you can see wednesday we're kind of in the thick of it. a break after that system. and then we're looking at more heavy rain as we get into late thursday night, early friday. so all in all, the rainfall amounts could be anywhere from one to three inches. but the wind is something we're really going to watch wednesday night with wind gusts. gusts from 25 miles an hour through wednesday night. and it's kind of unclear at this point the timing, wednesday through friday, but we should know the second half of the week

will remain quite soggy, with additional one to two inches of rain possible through friday. highs today underneath sunny skies after the fog lifts, we'll see 55 in the city. 56 in fremont. upper 50s from palo alto. temperatures right around aerage. if you're headed up to the mountains, overnight lows, wow, just in the teens here. tonight into tomorrow, but afternoons will get a little bit warmer as we head towards the holiday. martin luther king. 41 degrees. and you'll notice that the 40s through tuesday. so this could create maybe some rain initially wednesday in the mountains. then it changes over to snow. here's the seven-day forecast. it's been awfully chilly mornings. a slight chance of showers tonight. we'll look for a nice holiday on monday. wednesday, thursday, friday, looks rainy. >> we'll take those dry days. thank you, lisa. the first two nfl divisional play-offs will kick off later
