good morning to you. i'm erielle reshef in for diane. >> and i'm kendis gibson. it is turning out to be a very busy mlk. we're going to start with several breaking news stories. first one overseas. a deadly plane crash overnight. a boeing 747 went down in kyrgyzstan just short of the main airport. a new image shows a large section of the aircraft stuck inside of a home. >> more than three dozen people are dead. many of them killed in their homes when the turkish cargo jet went down in a residential neighborhood. abc's dragona jovanovic has been tracking the latest developments. >> reporter: the initial finding is the pilot has missed the runway because of dense fog and the majority of the dead were from the village dacha-suu where the plane, it was a turnish cargo

plane flying from hong kong en route to istanbul via bishkek, the capital of kyrgyzstan crashed around 7:30 24 morning. >> overnight the american planemaker in a statement boeing expressing condolences and that a technical team they say is on standby to provide assistance in that investigation. and there is more breaking news on this side of the world. the shooting this morning, we're being told at a nightclub in mexico in an area packed with american tourists. >> the shots rang out early this morning in playa del carmen at a host hosting a dmn festival. local media are saying at least four people are dead. many more injured. one person we talked to at the scene at that event said most of the people inside that event were americans. we'll continue to stay on top of that breaking story. back here at home president-elect donald trump is ranting on twitter just days before taking office sounding off against civil rights legend john lewis and cia chief. >> trump also scrapped a planned visit to the new african-american museum in

washington, and it's not clear how he plans to spent martin luther king jr. day. meanwhile, trump's approval ratings for his transition performance remain historically low at 44%. that's compared to 83% at the end of president obama's transition and 61% for george w. bush. >> abc's lana zak has the latest from washington for us. lana, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and erielle. president-elect trump was supposed to be here in washington, d.c. today celebrating martin luther king day at the new national museum for african-american history, but given his dust-up, transition team sources at least say that there were planning difficulties that made it impossible for him to be here so he'll remain in new york city. it's martin luther king day and the president-elect is fighting with a civil rights leader. >> that's not right. >> reporter: congressman john lewis told "meet the press" he didn't see president-elect donald trump as a, quote, legitimate president. >> i don't plan to attend the inauguration. it would be the first one that i miss since i've been in the congress. >> reporter: mr. trump called

lewis, quote, all talk, talk, talk, no action or results. but lewis risked life and limb to bring civil rights change to america, and now at least 24 democratic members of congress say they will not attend inauguration, many citing mr. trump's words against mr. lewis as their motivation. but lewis is just one of several targets of trump's ire over the weekend. >> i think mr. trump has to understand this is more than being about him. it's about the united states and national security. >> reporter: after cia director john brennan's critiques on fox mr. trump tweeted, quote, was this the leaker of fake news and after another "snl" skit poked fun at the president-elect -- >> 20 million people will lose their health insurance. i mean, people could die. >> listen, i'm about to be president. we're all going to die. next question. >> reporter: he tweeted "saturday night live" is the worst of nbc. president-elect trump, he has had the ability to defend himself according to his vice

president-elect. he's saying that today, but the other part of it, too, kendis and erielle, is the number of protests we expect here in washington, d.c. all week they're supposed to happen with a capstone event saturday. d.c. has increased the estimates from 200,000 now to 400,000. >> more protests than any other inauguration has had. thank you, lana zak in washington for us this morning. the president-elect is now offering what sounds a lot like universal health care as thousands rallied to save obamacare, trump told "the washington post" his plan to replace the health care law would include insurance for everybody, even those who can't pay for it but he did not reveal any specifics of the plan that appeared to conflict with the views of many republicans. preparations for inauguration day are in full swing. the bands got a chance to try out their songs for friday's festivity, and members of the military served as stand-ins for the president-elect, the soon-to-be first lady melania trump and the future vice

president and his wife. they walked down the steps of the capitol and also took part in a mock swearing in ceremony. >> abc will be there for the real thing providing nonstop live coverage of the inauguration of donald trump as the 45th president all day friday starting at 7:00 a.m. eastern time. president obama admits this has been an unusual transition and one of the areas of sharp disagreement has been over israel. the outgoing president insists that allowing a u.n. vote that was critical of israel was the right move. obama told "60 minutes" that the jewish state is pursuing a policy unlikely to lead to peace. >> the pace of settlements during the course of my presidency has gotten so substantial that it's getting harder and harder to imagine an effective contiguous palestinian state. >> as for the president-elect, president obama is warning people not to underestimate him and to make sure that our democratic institutions remain in place.

ice storms are making travel a misery, frankly, for so many people across the central plains states. >> i want to show you this crash involving three tractor trailers in central nebraska closing the busy interstate 80 for several hours. luckily, no one was injured. a kansas state trooper avoided injury barely when an oncoming truck slid and overturned. the officer swerved onto the shoulder then went back to help the truck driver. so, here's the situation this morning. there are winter weather alerts again this morning with significant accumulations expected in oklahoma, kansas, nebraska and iowa. accuweather's paul williams has been tracking the forecast overnight. good morning. >> good morning, erielle, kendis. we literally have another atmospheric river of moisture that is going to gush right along the west coast with an intense low pressure system to the north that will open the door for another round of tremendous amount of rainfall as well as snowfall for this week.

flooding, rain, excessive mountain snow, high winds and travel threat on a major scale covering the west coast and really the rocky mountain states and pulling its way more towards the east, and speaking of the east, another snowstorm in the middle of the country. kendis, erielle. >> thanks, paul. this morning biloxi, mississippi, hopes to end a holiday controversy. on friday biloxi's twitter feed announced offices would be closed for great americans day. since 1986, the third monday in january has been the national martin luther king jr. holiday. biloxi officials say a 1985 ordinance established great americans day to honor dr. king and others including confederate general robert e. lee. today the city officially changed its observance to match the federal holiday. and as the legacy of dr. king is honored across the country today, including in biloxi, his daughter has posted a moving tribute. this photo showing bernice king at her father's memorial tweeting, happy birthday, dad, i miss you.

in addition to participating in a service project for dr. martin luther king jr. today, president obama will also welcome the world series champion chicago cubs to the white house. >> the president extended his invitation to the team just after they beat cleveland in november. no one can forget this moment. expect plenty of good-natured ribbing, though, given that the president is a chicago white sox fan. >> exactly, he grew up on the south side, but his his wife is a cubs fan, grew up on the north side. >> house divided. >> coming up, the incredible reunion, a girl kidnapped as a baby meets her parents for the very first time. plus, an admission from samsung about its cell phones that burst into flames. what the company is now saying caused the problem coming up. and clear the floor

while i was on a combat patrol my c in baqubah, iraq,nned out. a rocket-propelled grenade took my arm off at the shoulder. when i came home, i felt alone. my family was around me, but i couldn't talk to them about what i'd seen and what i'd done. i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat,

watch this space and you'll see the scary moments for athletes and fans. they're running for safety in the czech republic that crashed and it just opened and the governor called the construction sloppy. you think? all 80 people inside managed to escape without any injuries. from the outside take a look at this. you can see the extensive damage. back in this country and to maryland, baltimore mourners have gathered to remember the six children who were killed in a house fire last week. the victims were honored with candles, balloons, songs and a lot of prayers. two of the children who survived the fire have been upgraded to good condition. but their mother remains in the hospital in critical condition. new developments in that scandal surrounding samsung over its cell phones. an internal investigation has said what caused some samsung galaxy note 7s to catch fire. sources say the company found that faulty batteries were to blame.

newborn together. >> the person she called dad for 18 1/2 years is not a dad. >> reporter: dna testing uncovering the truth, alexis was, in fact, baby kamiyah snatched. from a florida hospital in 1998. this morning, 51-year-old williams is behind bars facing charges for the kidnapping. meanwhile, manigo says he had no idea the child he was raising was taken from someone else. eva pilgrim, abc news, walterboro, south carolina. >> eva will have more on that incredible story later on today on "gma." police in suburban chicago are under new scrutiny this morning following some newly released dash cam video that shows officers from the city of evanston forcefully arresting a man suspected of driving a stolen car. the officers can be seen hitting the man and ordering him to the ground. that man, a doctoral student, at northwestern university tells them the car isn't stolen. it's his. >> on the ground. on the ground. >> this is my vehicle, sir. i was trying to stick something

on the roof. >> okay, i have evidence. >> when we tell you to get down, you got to get down, man. >> yes, sir. >> i mean, really. even after realizing they had stopped an innocent man, police arrested him for disobeying orders. he was acquitted and is now suing the police department there. a former pro wrestler star jimmy "superfly" snuka has passed away. he was known for his dives off the ropes. he was inducted into the wwe hall of fame 20 years ago but just earlier this month he achieved another sort of fame, he was ruled incompetent to stand trial for the 33-year-old murder of his girlfriend because of dementia. snuka was 73. it was an unusual scene last night inside the dallas cowboys stadium. fans who hadn't left just yet were told to shelter in place because of a raging storm outside. >> there were even tornado warnings. eventually they were allowed to leave. highlights from the game itself, that was torture for them to have to stay there. we get those highlights now from

2:00 a.m. police resnded to the address many times. about 700 calls linked to the business since 2012. from everything starting with disorderly conduct to an assault on a police officer. there was also a deadly shooting outside crogan's last summer. brown was shot and killed in august after getting into an argument. while a lot of patrons are sad to see crogan's go, neighboring business owners are relieved. >> we've had troubles at crogan's. signs have been broken and beer bottles and things like that in front of my studio. it's going to be really nice not to have that. >> crogan's announced on a facebook invite it is holding a farewell celebration next sunday. the city made it clear it has specific ideas for what walnut creek should be and crogan's no longer fits the narrative. the par
