>> and i'm ama daetz in for kristen sze. seven months ago 49 people died and dozens others were injured when a gunman attacked the orlando nightclub and opened fire. >> now this morning in the east bay fbi agents arrested the gunman's wife. >> leslie brinkley is covering this developing story from where the arrest took place. leslie. >> reporter: good evening. this is the rodeo home where the fbi raided this morning. noor salman was taken into custody in connection with the orlando nightclub shooting after a seven-month exhaustive investigation by the fbi. 30-year-old noor salman grew up in rodeo and married the orlando nightclub gunman, omar mateen, in 2011 in the bay area. after the biggest mass shooting in u.s. history at the pulse nightclub in june of 2016, her husband dead, salman became the target of an intense fbi investigation. today neighbors say salman was

arrested at her parents' home. >> it was about 7:30, 7:45 when i heard the commotion. >> what kind of commotion? >> like people walking around, car doors slamming and the dogs went off like crazy. >> reporter: salman was booked into the santa rita jail. according to orlando's police chief, she faces charges of obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting by providing material support to a terrorit organization. the chief said in a statement today there is some relief that someone will be held accountable for that horrific crime. the orlando shooter reportedly texted his wife during the attack and she accompanied him on at least one trip to a gun shop as he bought ammunition. salman attorney linda moreno released a statement to abc news saying noor salman had no foreknowledge nor could she predict what omar mateen intended to do that tragic night. noor has told her story of abuse

at his hands. we believe it is misguided and wrong to prosecute her and that it dishonors the memories of the victims to punish an innocent person. a woman left the family home today without comment. >> i think the family should understand that it's not a reflection on them or their neighborhood or how we feel about them at all. >> reporter: noor salman is expected to appear in federal court in oakland on tuesday morning. she would then be transferred to orlando for prosecution. in rodeo, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. dozens of people boarded the celebration train today for a free ride to san francisco and an event honoring dr. martin luther king jr.'s life and legacy. ♪ we shall overcome many riders sang the civil rights anthem "we shall overcome" before hopping on the train. those miles commemorate the historic 54-mile march led by dr. king in 1965 from selma to montgomery, alabama. signs and songs could be

seen and heard in oakland on this day honoring dr. martin luther king jr. sky 7 was in oakland as people filled the streets, hoping to keep alive the dreams of dr. king. this peaceful rally shut down several streets this afternoon. sergio quintana joins us live in oakland with a look at why people marched. sergio. >> reporter: ama, there is a rally that just wrapped up here at lake merritt probably half an hour ago, but this is a day of events that actually started hours ago at oakland city hall. there were lots of young people involved in this march. parents i talked with say they brought their children here to teach them about martin luther king jr.'s legacy and the methods he used to push for change. >> i think that's why we've been stuck the past couple of years is because we've been internetting each other instead of being out here on the ground, out here on the pavement, connecting with each other. >> reporter: from sky 7 you can see the size of the crowd. with the inauguration of donald trump just a few days away, this rally in march took on a sense

of urgency. >> i've been active since 1968 in the height of the vietnam war. i never felt as frightened about democracy and our country and the world. >> reporter: in this crowd of hundreds of people, there were about as many martin luther king signs as there were anti-donald trump signs. some parents made it a point to bring their kids to experience a lesson that cannot be learned online. >> tell me about having the family do it. >> this is what we do. we show up and we stand up and we speak up. >> reporter: as the crowd marched, another smaller group took over a park in oakland. they say they're reclaiming it for the community. the larger group is made up of people with an array of causes, but today they all have a common cause. >> dr. martin luther king represents for us, you know, the very best of what humanity is. >> reporter: they were united in a celebration of a man who remains a beacon of hope for many. in oakland, sergio quintana, abc 7 news. happening now in san francisco, people are setting up

for a free concert with local hip-hop artists to honor martin luther king jr. more radical legacy. abc 7 news was at civic center plaza in san francisco for some last-minute event preparations. concert organizers say their focus is police injustice. the concert begins at 5:30. we'll cover it, of course. events marking the king holiday began this morning. abc 7 news was in oakland where the allen temple health and social services ministry hosted this breakfast. it's called the mlk jr. drum major for freedom celebration. speakers included oakland congresswoman barbara lee, former congressman and oakland mayor and the former chairwoman of the black panther party. a new initiative to form stronger ties between muslims and catholics was launched in the south bay. faith leaders hope it will lead to an ongoing dialogue to address issues that they have in common. david louie is live in san jose with the story.

hi, david. >> reporter: hi, dan. well, we're all one family. that is the message that was shared by muslim and catholic spiritual leaders today at this san jose mosque. they're urging ongoing dialogue in order to foster some common ground as part of a process, not a one-time event. a contingent of catholics marched together to form new friendships in san jose. the spirit of dr. martin luther king jr. serve egd as a key motivation at a time of uncertainly over anti-immigrant and anti-muslim sentiment. >> we see this very much as rooted in dr. king. it's not rooted in politics, it's rooted in our mutual belief of both of our religions. they speak about a unity of human kind, friendship, understanding and dialogue. >> reporter: an overflow crowd of 400 sat together to hear from spiritual leaders, including the bishop of the diocese from san jose and the imams of several

mosques. >> if they want to tap the phones of the muslims, they will be tapping a lot of different people's phones. we're in this challenge together. >> reporter: afterwards, the dialogue began as muslims and catholics became friends. >> a mosque is a place of peace and of prayer and bringing community together and to be able to share in that today is a real privilege. >> reporter: the next step will be quarterly council meetings, peer to peer, among religious leaders, educators and congregations. >> and i'm hoping that we will be able to work together and support each other in the days, the months and indeed the years ahead. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. we are getting a better look today at the impact all our recent rain is having on the sierra snowpack. take a look at these satellite imanginges the national weather service released today. the darker the blue and purple, the deeper the snow. last week meteorologists

reported the drought is basically over in northern california. however, 60% of the state remains in drought conditions. we'll be getting even more wet weather this week. abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma is in for sandhya patel and tracking the rain. >> so great to see those pictures out of the sierra. well get more snow this week. when they get snow, we get rain and that's going to be the case. tonight, though, it's a clear night in terms of precipitation. outside we go, a gorgeous sunset is under way. a live look from our east bay hills camera. tomorrow you will notice a more of a milky sky as our air quality declines, especially in the north bay and inland. so poor air quality is forecasted. that means a spare the air day has been put into effect tuesday. it's legal to burn wood in winter spare the air days. tomorrow, one last day of dry weather and then that storm door gets wide open. this is impressive. wednesday through monday each and every day there's a chance for rain. wednesday is our next chance. it's a 2, a moderate storm on

wednesday, not only showers and downpours but winds will be whipping again in the evening. we'll talk about what concerns we have in that storm system coming up in the full accuweather forecast shall guys. >> drew, thanks very much. the chp needs your help tracking down a person who opened fire on another car in concord. it happened last night on highway 242 between solano way and highway 4 just after 5:00 p.m. of the someone shot at two men inside a black mercedes. five bullet holes at least on the side of the car. the driver went to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. the passenger has not hurt. there have been 40 shootings on bay area freeways in just the past 18 months. the greatest show on earth has just four months left. the ringling bros. barnum & bailey circus announced the show is no longer a sustainable business model. melanie woodrow spoke with one of the performers and is in our newsroom with more. >> well, that performer tells me that circus employees found out

this weekend with everybody else. while animal activists are calling the announcement a victory, others, including feld entertainment, say this is a loss for everyone. after 146 years, the greatest show on earth is closing. >> it is the future until may and then it will be part of our glorious past. >> executives spoke today for the first time about this weekend's announcement. feld entertainment says the show has seen a downward trend inspect attendance over the last ten years. >> last year after we retired the elephants from the touring units, we saw a much steeper drop in sales. >> animal rights activists from direction action everywhere are calling the announcement a victory. >> i really hope society is continuing to move in the way of the future, which is shutting down all industries that are exploiting animals like farms, zoos, labs. >> we stand behind the care that we always give all of our animals. >> a sentiment ringling bros.

surfers protested peacefully against violence on a peach on this dr. martin luther king jr. day in southern california. they gathered in palos verdes estates in south los angeles. >> reporter: chris is making sure everyone who wants to surf here can surf here safely, but it's not the cliffside or the waves he's trying to safeguard against. >> as soon as i got into the water i was surrounded. >> reporter: it's other surfers. >> i had a guy trying to stab me under the water by dipping his knee board under water and shoving the fins back toward my face. as i got back up again there was a guy coming down the cliff in

black face with a bigwig saying i didn't pay enough taxes to be here. >> reporter: so he is inviting anyone to come out to celebrate integration. >> i want to let people know this isn't my beach, this isn't their beach, this is all of our beach. >> reporter: police were here too to make sure things remain peaceful. a lawsuit has been filed against the city of palos verdes estates and a group of surfers known as the lunata bay boys, using violence and intimidation to keep other surfers away. paul lives across the street and knows some of them. >> they're pretty nice guys. i think it's pretty standard surf rules. >> reporter: but a facebook page has also been created to allow those who want to serve there to buddy up and surf in pairs. >> they would always try to chase us off or throw rocks at us, usually do something to your car. >> reporter: things have improved in the last few years and with the police's help, but says days like today help remind everyone that this is a public beach and doesn't belong to anyone or any group.

next year. its estimated marijuana sales in the state could exceed $7 billion by 2020. a bay area company that sells roses online is sending flowers to the inauguration. abc 7 news was in concord where the ceo of roseshire launched his new box set for the occasion that includes ten dozen roses. that's 120 roses per box. the company will send one to the outgoing first lady michelle obama and one to the incoming first lady, melania trump. the roses are all white, as you see. each one includes a message of hope. >> great things never came from comfort zones. so, you know, each one is their own little words, their own little meanings. >> the messages were sent in by customers on social media. the company says it's sending one box to each first lady as a show of respect. i will be in washington, d.c., thursday and friday with live reports on president-elect trump's inauguration.

to come by in the future. the crab season got off to a late start because of acid making crab unsafe for consumption. the study published in global change biology says it is expected to increase acidity along the west coast and in 50 years a third of the crab population could be gone. commercial crabbing in california is worth about $60 million annually, $90 million in peak years. this past summer the national parks turned 100. it seems like we all wanted in on the birthday bash. attendance is on track to surpass 325 million in 2016 alone. at many parks, visitors waited an hour or more in cars to get through entrance gates. others spent the day trying to outmaneuver fellow visitors for parking spots and room on hiking trails. today park admission was waived for the martin luther king jr. day. the next free admissions day is

dense fog to start off the day. future weather 6:00 in the morning this gray shading you see on your screen encompassing a lot of the region. that is that fog and it's going to be very stubborn. by 11:00 in the morning it still wants to linger around the region. so the commute tomorrow going to be a little slower as the fog is with us first thing on tuesday. into the afternoon we go. not as bright of a day on the way as it is today. we'll have a mixture of sun and clouds out there. 53 the high in richmond, the same in san francisco. 57 san jose and 50 the high in antioch. these clouds all ahead of our next storm system moving in on wednesday. so the storm impact scale, bring it on back for wednesday. this is a moderate storm on wednesday, a 2 on the storm impact scale. starts off with light showers in the morning, picks up in intensity in the afternoon and evening. strong winds will accompany the storm in the evening as well and it will accompany a wide range of rainfall. the highest totals in the north bay, lower as you go south. hour by hour we go. watch the time samp in the corner of your screen.

8:00 morning likely some light showers as the wednesday morning commute is under way. the first half of wednesday is scattered showers. not until the afternoon that the storm system begins to pick up. the pops of yellow and orange you see on your screen north of the golden gate by 5:00, that's the heavy rain. it will sink south by 7:00. as it does move south, it's going to lose a lot of energy as is very typical with these storm systems. so by midnight early thursday, it's weakening so less rain in the south bay. potential rainfall on your wednesday. the storm is going to linger for the longest period of time in the north way so 1 to 2 inches of likely. oakland, san francisco, concord an inch to half an inch of rain of the then you go south and that storm system falls apart around livermore, san jose, less in the way of rainfall, a 10th to half an inch of rain. what will be widespread are gusty winds. 2:00 wednesday afternoon beginning to pick up right along the coast. some spots over 40 miles per hour. then in the evening ahead of the

a girl's grandfather is credited with stopping a woman from kidnapping the child at a park in northern california. police say a woman tried to snatch his 3-year-old granddaughter saturday northeast of sacramento. they say the man literally pulled the child out of the woman's arms. that woman, lindsay frasher, is now charged with attempted kidnapping. >> she approached one of the children, called her by a different name, if i remember right, and tried to take her. >> other people at the park held the woman until officers arrived. they say she has no connection to the child. we have new details tonight on a fire that gutted a popular restaurant in alameda. investigators now say the fire caused an estimated $250,000 in

damage to the japanese restaurant. they believe the fire was accidental and started near a drier in the restaurant, but an official cause has yet to be determined. the restaurant has been a fixture for almost 35 years. the owner says the restaurant will reopen just as soon as possible. a neighbor in san carlos reported spotting what appeared to be a mountain lion. it happened just after 7:00 this morning on melendy drive near crestview drive. mountain lions have been spotted in that area before. the san mateo county sheriff's office reminds people to avoid jacquesi jogging alone at dusk or dawn when they're more active. a rescue sure to move you. >> we'll show you why these firefighters are surrounding that pool.
