good morning to you on this tuesday, january 17. i'm reggie aqui. >> i'm natasha zouves. we do want to get straight over to traffic reporter alexis smith. we have a major problem with b.a.r.t. this morning, major delays system-wide, all due to a switching problem at embarcadero. so essentially no trains are able to get by. b.a.r.t. has not been able to give us an estimate on when this problem will be fixed but that is a major delay system-wide. i have been talking to our coworker who got on at rock ridge. he thought it was starting to sound optimistic but he was forced off at west oakland station along with many others so not even coming into afrs yet and boy 240ez platforms are full. i'm trying to get a picture for you. let's check in with mike nicco. >> hi, everybody. couple of concerns as you head out the door. the first of it being fog. it's not as thick as it was yesterday, but there are some

temperatures in our inland east bay valleys and north bay there are getting near freezing so black ice could develop on elevated surfaced. that's the worst of it. the least of it, you're going to have to skriep some ice off your car. look from the exploratorium. no wood burning at all today. it is banned. temperatures through the low to mid 50s through afternoon hours. the ground breaking for the warriors new arena in san francisco is happening today. >> there are still questions, though, about where they're going to play until that arena opens. abc7 news reporter lonnie riviera live in mission bay this morning. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. the ground breaking is private and it will be here for the new chase center here in mission bay's san francisco today at noon. now, the 18,000-seat arena on't be finished until the 2019/2020 nba season, and that's the earliest. so, where will the team play next season? that's in question.

later today, the oakland city council will hold a closed session to discuss extending the team's lease, but just yesterday, the joint powers authority said oakland isn't the only option. the team could be looking to play in san jose. the team didn't say where, but it could be the shark tank, so last night, the game was sold out and here's what a number of people had to say about the move. >> i think the warriors believe they have options to go other places. mainly probably san jose. again, we're not getting specifics. we are trying to negotiate and we want them to stay at oracle up until, you know, we want them to stay forever but obviously they have their heart set ongoing to san francisco so we're trying to keep them as long as we can. >> reporter: meantime, arena opponents plan to continue their fight. they say the mission bay is too congested and they're hopeful the state supreme court will take up their case. the tent behind me is where the ground breaking ceremony is taking place later today and we're hearing kevin durant will

when he bought ammunition. she could face a maximum sentence of liech in prison on the death penalty. "the washington post" reporting that more than 40 democratic lawmakers are going to skip friday's inauguration. >> four of those members of congress are from right here in the bay area. the reasons for mark desaulnier, barbara lee, zoe laugh grin and jared huffman not going ek cothose from a southern california congressman. >> people have not forgotten that he attacked a mexican-american judge, that he attacked a gold star family and now a civil rights icon. i cannot pretend that this is a normal transition of power. >> pleasanton congressman eric swalwell and kamala harris say they will be attended. crews are getting ready in d.c., laying down barriers for the parade, which is expected to last about 90 minutes, which is quite short compared to president obama's inauguration, which lasted four hours. on the west lawn of the u.s.

a benefit concert is going to happen tonight in oakland to help two badly hurt members of the popular bay area band tower of power. david garibaldi is recovering. though bassist mark is still listed in critical condition. they were hit by an amtrak train last thursday as they tried to cross the tracks to get to yoshi's nightclub. fellow band members say the outpouring of love and support has been amazing and they're urging fans to contribute to a go fund me account set up for the two men. tonight's benefit starts at 8:00 p.m. at yoshi's jack london square. the coast guard has canceled a search for a father and son swept into the ocean by a wave along an oregon beach this week. 31-year-old jason dean thomas and he has 3-year-old son were

walking along the beach about 75 miles north of the california state line. a wave pulled both out to sea. the boy's mom saw it all happened and then called authorities. authorities say the waves were especially rough. a girl's grandfather now being credited with stopping a woman from kidnapping his granddaughter at a northern california park. police say a woman tried to snatch 3-year-old child. the grandfather jumped into action. he pulled the young girl out of the would be kidnapper's arms. that person, lindsay frasher, is now charged with attempted kidnap be. >> ms. frasher approached wasn't of the children, called her by a different name and tried to take her. >> other people at the park held the woman until officers got there. they say she has no connection to the child. >> thank goodness for grandpa in that case. breaking news, america's largest retailer has announced plans to boost jobs. >> jessica at the live desk with this new story.

minutes ago but boy, they are in recovery mode now. and that is a major delay system wide so i did just talk to jim, he got on at rock ridge, forcesed off at west oakland station and then got on another train, made it into san francisco. about 32 minutes late so i would say, boy, if you are taking b.a.r.t. this morning, for the rests of the normal morning commute, i would guess we are going to be at about 20 to 30 minute delay. in the meantime, new sig alert. very strong delays through san lorenzo. all lanes are back open an westbound 237 but you're still down to about 17 miles an hour. hollyfield is live at the santa rita jail in dublin. >> reporter: good morning. she is here in the dublin jail but will be taken to oakland today to make that first court appearance. she is being held because authorities believe she helped her husband with that attack in june in that orlando gay nightclub where 49 people were killed. there are two accounts of noor salman. the fbi believes she knew of her husband's plans to carry out the violent attack. she has said she was abused by her husband and she did not know what he planned to do. authorities arrested her yesterday morning and her parents home in rodeo in the east bay. once those charges are unsealed we will know more about how serious the accusations are against her. >> if it's aiding and abetting after the fact as an accessory, the maximum sentence she could receive is up to 15 years. >> reporter: her attorney issued this statement.

noor salman had no foreknowledge, nor could she predict what omar mateen intended to do that tragic night. noor has told her story of abuse at his hands. we believe it is misguided and wrong to prosecute her and that it dishonors the memories of the victims to punish an innocent person. one neighbor in rodeo told us they feel bad for the little boy. reporting live in dublin, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. thank you. new details about the deadly new years nightclub attack innist tan bull. the suspect has reportedly confessed. this photo was taken of abdulgadir masharipov following yesterday's arrest and he is suspected of gunning down 39 people on behalf of isis. authorities confirmed his identity using fingerprints. he was hiding out in a luxury residential complex just outside the city. authorities need your help finding a car burglary suspect who led sheriffs deputies on quite the pursuit last yeek. this is eddie nute, wanted on a

$1 million arrest warrant related to 50 counts of auto burglary. and look at this. that's his car and that's contra costa sheriffs deputies spotting him and chaising him. that pursuit continued westbound and then ended this in dh collision. authorities say nute part of a violent car gang. new this morning, a large oak tree came crashing down on to a busy street in alamo overnight. half the tree fell into the street and the other half fell into a home on livorna road. that lone county worker showed up and started chopping up the tree, cleared the lanes for traffic around 3:20 this morning. the cal student suspected of stabbing a berkeley woman do death is going to be arraigned today. pablo gomez, accused of killing emilie inman inside her ashley avenue home on january 26.

inman's family says the two didn't know each other. gomez is also accused of stabbing another woman at a student co-op living space on ridge road. she survived. after the attacks, gomez traveled to southern california where he checked himself into a hospital and surrendered to police. happening today, protesters will once again take to the streets of oakland over what they see as misconduct by police. they will be rallying against proposed policies by president-elect donald trump. the group showing up for racial justice bay area is gathering in front of oakland city hall at 9:00 this morning. another group yesterday organized a similar protest in honor of dr. martin luther king jr.'s call for equality. meanwhile, the number of democratic members of congress who say they will not be attending friday's inauguration has grown to 40. one of those is oakland representative barbara lee. she spent monday celebrating martin luther king jr.'s birthday and she says she sees no reason to do the same thing on friday. >> when you look at the campaign of divisiveness and bigotry and when you look at the fact that nothing has changed since the

campaign, you know, i don't think that's something that i need to do in terms of celebrating. >> concord democrat mark desaulnier and jared huffman will also not be going. pleasanton's eric swalwell and senator elect kamala harris say they will be attending. abc7 news an codan ashley will be in washington, d.c, on thursday and friday, bringing us live reports on president-elect trump's inauguration. a project to create a third eastbound lane on richmond-san rafael bridge could be finished by fall. initial work is underway. a retaining wall and bike lane is going to be moved to accommodate that expansion and once it's finished, the added lane will only be open during the morning and evening commutes. november is the target month to get it done. happening today, two bay area communities will take up the issue of legalized recreational marijuana and how to regulate the sale and delivery of it. the contra costa county board of supervisors will decide on an interim ordinance to prohibit the cultivation, delivery, or

we still have our commuter alert here for b.a.r.t. riders this morning. so it started with that switching problem at embarcadero station. that problem got fixed just a little bit after 6:00 but boy, we still have a major delay system-wide so i'd say we're looking at another hour or so before we get back to normal. in the meantime, i do have good news for southbound 880 drivers. we had that crash in hayward area. several vehicles involved, at least one had injuries. that was blocking the two left lanes. it did clear just a few minutes ago so all laenz are back open. that's blocked just on the shoulder at this point. 7 miles per hour, 10 miles per hour, that is about 6 miles of really heavy traffic if you are heading towards state route 92 and the san mateo bridge and a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. only lanes moving along sipt, the car pool lanes so those metering lights have been on since 5:32 this morning. we are tracking new developments this morning in that deadly shooting at a ft. lauderdale airport. >> things are moving fast for the subject. >> the shooter had his first

appearance in federal court in florida this morning. he's the man police say you see in the surveillance video from the airport's baggage claim area a week and a half ago. five people were shot and killed. six others were injured. ruiz is being held without bond. the judge the ft. lauderdale has set another hearing, a detention hearing, and it's going to happen at 10 our time today. so we'll be checking the story and get you any updates on our abc7 news app and on later newscasts. broken escalators are a frustration that many b.a.r.t. riders share but b.a.r.t. now says the way we use them is a reason why they're breaking down. down.
