spoerks person just confirmed the news # 0 minutes ago, telling abc news the 92-year-old is being monitored and resting comfortably at houston methodist hospital. they say he's expecting to go home soon. the elder bush has been hospitalized several times over the last few years. the latest stint was in portland, maine, last summer. he is the oldest living former president and we will monitor this story and bring you updates. developing news in the east bay. police investigating a homicide this morning after a man was shot and then crashed his suv into a house. the victim died at the scene. everyone inside the home is okay. police are now searching for a shooter. it happened on east 13th and simmons street shortly after #:30 last night. police say the victim is a 27-year-old man from martinez. in castro valley, up to seven people are out of their home this morning after their

house caught fire. firefighters responded and when they got there, a car was on fire in the driveway and the house was burning. we have reached out to alameda county fire for more information. three storms are moving in over the next five days as some parts of the bay area are still drying out. >> abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in the north bay for us. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning. you can see they still have sandbags out from the last round of storms. they're ready to go again and it's already raining this morning and we know this is just the beginning. this isn't the only place where you're going to see sandbags up here in the north bay. they also are lining fairfax. it's a common sight up here in this area that was saturated from the last round of storms now. they are bracing for more-hope for the best and prepare for safety. >> a home is -- it's your home, but it's only stuff. >> i was pretty nervous and feel that way about the upcoming week

live sent straight to your phone. president-elect donald trump is going to meet today with new york governor andrew cuomo, a sitdown he hopes will help build new bridges and airports in his state. mr. trump attended a diplomat dinner last night. he said people are predicting record crowds for his his team is posting ads on facebook and twitter encouraging supporters to turn out. a california man is in the hospital with third degree burns. he set himself on fire outside of trump hotel in washington, d.c. you can see the video shows the fire still burning after paramedics rushed him to the hospital. a source tells "the washington post" that the man is 40 years hold, that he used a lighter and slernt to start the fire. he was muttering trump's name. the trump inauguration is drawing a record number of protests both in washington and here in the bay area. thousands expected to participate in so-called sister women's marches in the bay area

friends and supporters in the bay area are reacting to president obama's decision to commute the sentence of chelsea manning. here's abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian. >> she's so gentle and so intelligent and sensitive and just a wonderful human being. >> reporter: for the past seven years, ms. wrightman has worked hard to get her friend released from prison. that's why she started the chelsea manning support network. >> i was really worried about her where i thought to myself, there's so many years she's facing in prison, how is she going to get through this. >> reporter: manning who went by bradley until 2013 was sentenced to 35 years for espionage, theft, and computer fraud. those at electronic frontier foundation call the charges overreaching. >> we're glad that chelsea is going to get out but it doesn't save the underlying problem that the computer fraud and abuse act is ripe for abuse by prosecutors. >> reporter: manning got the longest sentence ever for

the june attack that killed 49 people and accused of lying to fbi agents. her uncle calls these charges ridiculous and says that she didn't know what happened until she talked to her husband after the shooting. >> she called him, i don't know, called him or text him. he told her, didn't you know what's happened? she told him no. he said, i love you, baby, and hung up. that's what she knows. >> the city of orlando released these photos from inside the pulse nightclub after the massacre. s.w.a.t. teams broke down walls to gain access tomato. new this morning, alameda has adopted the resolution at about 12:15 this morning. the move comes in the aftermath of president-elect trump's promise to crack down on illegal immigration. under the resolution, police will not make mass arrests based on immigration status. also, city employees will reject requests to registerer anyone based on religious beliefs.

in the mid to upper 40s. we'll take a look at that heavy rain that's going to be pounding us this afternoon and evening and the next two storms coming up. let's find out if we have any issues this morning on the roads. they are getting wet. they sure are. kind of surprisingly here we're off to a quiet start, no incidents on the boards right now. we do have some lingering overnight road work so the brokaw road scheduled to be closed for construction work until about 5:00 this morning and as mike mentioned, just some scattered showers there in the south bay for now. little bit heavier here in the novato area and for the moment, anyway, highway 37 is open, both directions, between atherton and 101 and i am watching that closely, though. if we get those heavy downpours this morning, we could see that have to close again because we have waters lingering right off on the shoulders there. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see rain coming down. flip those wipers on and drive for conditions. we'll take a look at drive times coming up. still to come on abc7

we're watching that breaking news out of italy. several large earthquakes hit central italy this morning. let me show you exactly where those are. the first one was a magnitude 5.3, followed by a 5.7. we have seen very large earthquakes there. the aftershocks continue right now all in that same central area. it's the same area that was decimate bid a quake last august. this, in fact, is amatrice, the quake that killed 300 people and destroyed many building. the good news is that this time around, so far there are no reports of any casualties but we'll be watching for updates. >> good to hear. thank you so much, jessica. b.a.r.t. plans to start a pilot program next monday that will guarantee parking for car poolers at one of its east bay stations. riders who car pool to the

dublin pleasanton station will be guaranteed parking spots until 10:00 a.m. it's part of a pilot program to better utilize parking spaces. scoop users will need to schedule a ride to the station by 9:00 p.m. the night before for morning service. new details, san francisco's mooup transportation agency is going to allow parking in medians on weekends near dolores park. this pilot program allows drivers to parallel park along the medians between 14th and 18th streets. many people already do this when they're going to churches in the area. the new law legalizes the practice on friday night, saturday mornings and all day on sunday. it's expected to start in february or march. mountain view say a housekeeper may be responsible for robberies in the area. sandra cuoto was hired through thumb tack.com. she was caught when one of her employers noticed something was wrong. katie marzullo has the detailed. >> reporter: a mountain view woman woke up one morning last week to find cash and belongings

missing. she went to bed with all the doors and windows locks. >> she knew that the only person who had access to her home was her housekeeper. >> reporter: mountain view police arrested 3-year-old sandra qcuoto but it was only just beginning. >> this individual had been connected to several home burglaries we were investigating. >> reporter: police say she also worked in san jose and the east bay. people we talked with in mountain view said it would be hard to trust a stranger in their home. >> that's scary and that's the stuff that i thought about when i was making a decision, which is why it was so easy to just say, well, i'll go with the people who have been cleaning my parents' house. >> reporter: word of mouth. >> for sure. and honestly, it's worked out very well. >> reporter: to protect yourself, mountain view police recommend getting referrals when hiring a housekeeper. also, they say be sure the person is insured, licensed, and bonded and it's always good

practice to lock up valuables and cash. officers did recover some stolen property from cuoto's home. they ask anyone who hired her to contact them. in mountain view, katie marzullo, abc7 news. from "7 on your side" now a san francisco woman has one a $400,000 settlement after being forced out of her home because of a huge rent increase. her landlord raised her rent from $2,100 a month $6,900 a month. she had to move and decided to sue. the trial would have started in a week but she decided to accept the settlement. she told us that she is happy but knows that so many others are facing the same struggle. >> i've been just watching the immense amount of greed in this town and not -- not every landlord is bad, but some of them are. >> she had just completed treatmented for breast cancer. the landlord's attorney says the settlement includes no acknowledgment of liability or

wrong doing. raiders quarterback derk carr is credited with helping police track down on amber alert victim. he retweeted this alert. carr has 247,000 followers on twitter so that gives him a wide audience. police say the 3-year-old ended up getting found safe. on sunday, lieutenant chris bolton tweeted his thanks to carr. it appears the secret to sharing local missing child info is a retweet by an nfl quarterback. it certainly helps. mike, where's the rain? >> the heaviest is moving through san francisco, across the bay bridge, into alameda, you can see hercules and it's right across the richmond-san rafael bridge right up 101 to novato and 37 just getting reopened, possibly getting flooded once again at least temporarily this morning. now it reaches almost all the way down to the san mateo bridge. there is some light rain and a

lesser chance of some light rain right now on the dumbarton bridge. you can see the rain rolling through san francisco right now. this is that initial push we talked about yesterday. we'll have heavier showers, wind and even the possibility of lightning and thunder as we head through the afternoon and evening hours. scattered showers linger tomorrow and more storms for friday and saturday. here we are heading through the morning hours and we'll focus most of our attention to the north after this initial wave pushes through. you can see the moderate to possibly heavy rain up in the north bay while the rest of us are getting a return to the wet weather at noon. it mainly stays until the north ban bay until 4:00. exiting the bay by about midnight and just some scattered showers left over for the morning commute tomorrow. here are my biggest concerns moving forward. we're going to have power outages possible, i'll show you the wooind in the next weather, ponding on the roadways and stream and creek flooding. still have a moderate storm friday and sunday.

and that breaking news, take a look at live images coming in from houston where the flood waters are waist-high at this point. they are still rising, and i actually want to point out this here on the left of your screen. take a look at that bus. we just saw a few moments ago, people being rescued from bus, and they had to be walked out of that area, including the bus driver has to be saved. several people were pulled from the water there at a nearby mcdonald's right now so we are watching those rescues during the commercial break before we came back to you and several

cars are stuck there with the water all the way to the top, and we are going to be watching this video, watching the live images that come in. i'm turning around video for you so i can show you those rescues that just happened during the commercial break and we'll get those images to you here shortly. but i'm watching this carefully for you at the live desk. certainly dealing with tough weather there. rain coming down hard in the last two hours. reggie, back to you. i was watching those pictures earlier. it's pretty astonishing. more problems for palo alto based theranos. according to the "wall street journal," the medical testsing start-up has closed down its last remaining blood facility in scottsdale, arizona. the lab reportedly failed an inspection in september. the closure was not announced until the report was released. earlier, theranos announced another round of layoffs. last year, it closed its other blood testing lab in california. thousands of lowe's workers will be out of a job. the home improvement retailer

says it's restructuring and about 2400 full-time employees will be laid off. lowe's employees were told that the changes will better align store staffing with customer demand. in business speak, that just means sales are likely down. the company will give severance pay and out placement resources. lowe's still plans to add up to 20 stores in each of the next three years. if you're searching for a new job, the san francisco post office is hiring. they're looking for mailmen and mail women. that sounds odd. postal delivery people. it's also hosting workshops to make the application easier. you'll learn how to prepare for the entrance exam and thousand apply online. the workshops will be held at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. the other will be in redwood city at the red morton community ser. a postal carrier? what's the non-gendered version of that? is that right? postal carrier? >> absolutely.

>> it's 4:55. let's talk about storm impact scale, 2, 1, 2, #, 2, 1. today's 2 means it's a moderate storm and that is going to bring us moderate rain this morning, ponding on the roadways possible this morning and a few power outages. our winds will start picking up at 11:00 in the north bay, 1:00 for the rest of us. hang out, gusting 40 to 50 miles per hour. the rain will get as far south as fresno and also the snow as far south as yosemite but from 10:00 this morning to noon tomorrow, 12 inches above 5,000 feet, 2 feet above 7,000 feet. it's going to be tough sledding up there. and almost feeling too good to be true for the commute this morning. quite a bit of rain out there for most drivers this morning, at least going to have to flip those wipers on a few times. you can see that on live doppler 7. quite soggy across the bay bridge. no major delays but you can see

some of the heavier rain moving in under those street lamps and here's a look at lawrence expressway, maybe a sprinkle or two, but overall, the south bay looking quite a bit dryer than the rest of us this morning. this is something that may interest most parents out there. there is a new free app on the market that can help you protect your child from getting sick at school. it is called sneez and this is how it works. parents anonymously enter their child's school and grade and then self-report the sicknesses that are circulating, the symptoms their child or classmates may have and this allows other parents to see what bugs are going around on any particular day. the app is crowd sourced so its accuracy improves with the amount of users. >> i really think a community could change the status of their health if they were really, really committed to this app, because as a community, we would be so out in front of illnesses. >> a mom of 10-year-old triplets actually helped design it.
