6:00 a.m. on this thursday, january 19. i'm reggie aqui. >> and i'm jessica castro. natasha zouves is off. thanks for joining us. meteorologist mike nicco. >> i like the running start. >> and traffic reporter alexis smith. >> it's hard work over there. >> i was trying to get the radar dialed in on something that was a hot spot this morning, and yeah, i just kind of ran on in here. working busy this time, trying to keep up with the storms and social media and on air here, so let's take a look another what's going on with live doppler 7. you can see some yellows and some oranges out there. some brief downpours. see that thunderstorm northeast of napa? that's moving to the northeast away, but lightning can strike several miles away from the parent storm so stay inside for 10, 20 more minutes until that gets far away. here's a look at what's going on in walnut creek right now and you can see light rain through this. scattered showers through noon, a little bit of a break in afternoon. and then the next storm we start to see some showers develop at 7:00 and it's going to get much heavier tonight. more on that next. couple new problems in east

bay. we've got a crash on both 580 and 880 is unfortunately i know you would take one or the other for an alternate. the one of 580 is near grand avenue and the one or northbound 880 is near oak street so we have the left lane down on 580, i believe just the shoulder blocked on 880. but pretty much an equal back-up there. so you can take that long way, 13 to 24. i'll have more details coming up next. schools across the bay area are planning protests this morning as part of a national day of action. >> students and teachers expected to take part and for more, we go to lonni rivera. she's live in fremont. >> reporter: yes, demonstrations are planned here in fremont, oakland, san francisco, and several other cities this morning. it's part of a day of action called reclaim our schools. students and teachers are protesting president-elect donald trump's inauguration and calling out his support for privatization of public schools. protests have been a common sight for students wanting to

have their voices heard. most of them peaceful, like this one. we saw in san francisco after the election. so, protests are expected to stay on campus. some staging walk in, others holding hands in solidarity. meanwhile, inauguration day tomorrow, also shaping up to be strike day for hundreds of high school students in oakland and berkeley. many are planning to join a protest march to uc berkeley where cal students will be rallying. both berkeley and oak districts are urging students, though, to stay in class. the districts stand to lose thousands in state funds if students don't show up to school. tomorrow, president-elect donald trump is going to take the oath of office and the this morning, washington, d.c., is getting ready for the historic event that is bringing both cheer and controversy. abc7 news anchor dan ashley is in our nation's capital. >> reporter: good morning from our nation's capital where

thousands are pouring in to celebrate and to protest the inauguration of donald trump as the nation's 45th commander in chief. as you can imagine, security for an event of this magnitude is unbelievably tight. trucks filled with sand have been rolled out on d.c. streets as barricades for road closures. today, 3500 law enforcement officers from around the country will be sworn in as special deputies by the u.s. marshalls for duty during the inauguration. this afternoon, president-elect trump and vice president-elect mike pence will attend a replaying at arlington national cemetery. they will then make their way to the lincoln memorial for the make america great again welcome celebration. for those celebrating the president-elect's victory, the night will be capped off with more than a dozen balls and galas. not to be left out, those who oppose the president-elect will be holding balls and gatherings of their own and we do expect many protests as well. we will be here throughout this historic event. follow me on twitter @dan ashley

abc7. in washington, dan ashley, abc7 news. and you can continue watching dan's reports live from washington later today and tomorrow. he'll be following president-elect trump's inauguration of course as well as the protests happening around the city. more rain is on the way in napa county officials expect to see more damage. yesterday, officials declared a state of emergency. it's due to all the infrastructure damage from wave after wave of storms. damage includes mudslides like this one, redwood road collapsed into redwood creek in a recent storm. officials estimate the county will spend $15 million to fix the storm problems that already exist and they expect more will be coming. >> doesn't look like this rain is going to have the impact that we had earlier but because everything is so saturated, even the small amount of rain will probably still cause additional sall slides. will probably still bring trees down. >> a state of emergency allows napa county to access help from other counties, the state, and

the federal government. meanwhile, in san francisco, crews will help knock down loose rocks already in danger of falling on o'shaughnessy boulevard. an unstable hillside forced crews to close it yesterday. the city is worried that it could crumble because of this week's rain and wind. in the south bay, highway 130 is back open this morning after a downed tree forced a closure yesterday. that tree came down near pedro view road. it also brought down power lines. in hayward, it was a similar scene along linfield lane. a resident took this photo and shared it with abc7 news. city crews managed to cut the tree up and cleared it off the roadway. u.s. park rangers will decide later this morning if muir woods will open. they closed the redwood grove due to fears about high winds causing trees and branches to fall. remember you can monitor live doppler 7 any time on our abc7 news app. be sure to enable push alerts to

get weather updates sent right to your phone. former president george bush and wife barbara remain hospitalized this morning. doctors say they should recover. the 92-year-old bush went -- underwent a procedure to clear his airway after pneumonia led to an acute respiratory problem. he is in intensive care. barbara bush was in the hospital yesterday with symptoms of fatigue and coughing after weeks of feeling sick. mr. bush wrote to donald trump saying he was sorry he couldn't make the inauguration, citing doctor's orders. senator dianne feinstein is strongly suggesting she will run for another six-year term. the 83-year-old feinstein told a san francisco radio station she feels she can still help the people of california better than someone new coming in. feinstein is the oldest member of the senate and would be 91 at the end of the next term if she runs and wins. an 18-year-old who was kid napped as an infant may have known her true identity more than a year ago. >> and there's rain in the bay

just had a little bit of a downpour. we've got a little bit of one heading into antioch, deer valley road, all the way towards brentwood, discovery bay. for the morning rush hour, we % have isolated showers, ponding on the roads and still wet from last night. 49 to 51, that's our spread across san francisco right now. little milder this morning. temperatures in the 53 to 56 degree range this afternoon with just some scattered showers. the next storm is going to arrive this evening. i'll show you an hour by hour look at that, number 2, moderate on our scale. here's a look at the morning commute. we edo have a couple issues in the east bay but it sounds like they are in the clearing stages right now so i showed you these about ten minutes ago, northbound 880 at oak street, that's where we had a multi-car crash that was partially hanging over into the right lane. haven't quite pushed that off to the side so you are slow for about a mile and a half. westbound 580 at grand avenue, that one is looking much better. that was a spinout crash we had a vehicle faces the wrong way

approximately a year and a half ago. rohnert park police need your help finding a person of interest involving a mentally disabled woman. the man on your screen at the bottom with the gray hair followed a woman from a food max on rohnert park expressway to her apartment on tuesday. that's where police say the attack took place. he's described as a white male, clean shaven. oakland is delaying its full contract extension with federal monitors for the city's police department. taxpayers have spent more than $13 million on monitors since settling a landmark civil rights case? 2003. according to the chronicle, city leaders now wonder if they're getting their money's worth. they say despite the millions spent on compliance efforts, problems persist within the department. the council voted to extend the contract for two months instead

of a full year. general motors has been hit with a $1 million fine in connection with its ignition switch recall. the feds say the automaker knew its ignitions were a safety issue at least a year before it became public. the fine by the securities and exchange commission is for not having the checks in place to warn gm accountants in advance of a potential recall. federal investigators say better accounting controls would have helped get to the recall sooner and could have warned of the big economic impact. the warriors game at oklahoma city next month just got even bigger. you mad, bro? kevin durant scored 40 points to lead the dubs in the blowout, 121-100 over the thunder. but it was zaz aes hard foul that knocked thunder's point guard russell westbrook to the ground that led to some choice words after the game. >> he hit me on the afford but it's all right, i'm going to get his [ bleep ] back. straight up.

was really rough yesterday afternoon with san francisco bay ferry. today, we've got regular sefrsz, no weather delays. ace rail 1, 3, 5 still on time today and b.a.r.t. so far so good, 53 trains in service right now. smooth commute. let's check in with mike nicco. we've got some pockets of rain but more later on today. >> the pockets we have now aren't nearly as heavy as they were about an hour to two hours ago. now if you're coming in from the central valley via highway 4 through discovery bay or altamont pass, puddlings possibly developing there and scattered showers around the north bay with the thunderstorm continuing to move northeast away from napa. you can see there's not much up stream right now but some more will develop as we head throughout the morning and into the early afternoon hours. you can see san rafael there was wet even though it's not raining right now. and 280 at 17, wet even though we're not saying rain right there either and that's because of the wetness from last night. our next storm is going to be weaker and windy again sunday with flooding potential. our storm will be a 2 tonight.

heavy rain, winds aren't going to be quite as strong as they were last night but we do have some big waves and a chance of thunder and even hail and snow because of the freezing level of about 3,000 feet. brief downpour through about noon and then a little bit of a break with isolated light showers through the evening commute and then as we head towards 11:00, you can see the steadier rain start to develop and really heavy through about 5:00 tomorrow morning. in fact, when we wake up, we could have another about inch or two on the ground. tomorrow at 4:00 a.m. to saturday at 10:00 a.m., so we've got a big window of 6 to 12 inches above 5,000 feet, the passes will be snow bound. 2 to 3 feet above 7,000 feet, gusty winds and whiteout conditions. more snow is headed that way. saturday's not a washout, it's a light storm. sunday is going to be stronger. flooding, wind damage, power outages once again. monday is a light storm and tuesday and wednesday will be dry and several more feet of snow saturday and sunday in tahoe also. can you believe that? >> it is unbelievable. >> tell us how great it is up

there. >> the toyota tahoe report, i've got some really impressive base totals once again. driving conditions not great. so even though we're getting a little break in the snow right now, still trying to clear everything that we get yesterday and we have chains required for most of our highways. squaw alpine, north star, heavenly, 41 to 90 inch base and 89 and 50 chains are required. and i did just check. need to have chains as well. sugar bowl, 70 to 124, about double what it was a week ago, kirkwood base of 100 to 147 inches. chains required all the way around. so safe travels and have fun once you get there. >> no kidding. alexis, i'm going to supplement your tahoe report. look at these new images from the sierra. these pictures were tweeted by nancy bailey on highway 50 at echo pass on the way to south lake tahoe so thank you to nancy. chains are required as alexis just mentioned.

. welcome back. san francisco wants to build the largest public broadband system in the country. with the goal of running fiber into every home and building. the city will soon hire a consultant to lay out the options. according to reports, over 100,000 sf residents don't have access to the internet. the ambitious product could mean lower bills but it's estimated to cost $1 billion to get rolling, plus lawsuits are expected from existing internet providers such as comcast and at&t. time to ask finney. we have a question from karen in walnut creek about buying merchandise. >> she actually spoke to us at an ask finney event in walnut

vallejo and napa and american canyon, one of our better downpours right now. richmond, getting a little busy right there and it is wet but not too much ponding on the toll bridge side there. your 12 hour day planner, some drizzle to showers. they'll be scattered throughout the morning into the early afternoon, little dry by 4:00 and then the next storm tarts to roll in with isolated showers at 7:00. i'll give you an idea of just how strong they're going to be coming up. i want to show you a couple live pictures outside right now. we're moving along okay westbound 80 and nothing out of the ordinary today. metering lights on since 5:28 this morning and i was hoping to show you -- there we go. westbound 580 if you're coming through the tri-valley this morning, that is filling in as well but the heaviest of the rain has pushed through and driving conditions looking much better. those high wind advisories have expired as well. closer look at the south bay coming up. marin county is dealing with several trouble spots this morning after pounding rain. a chunk of the hillside gave way

along oakland avenue in san anselmo. crews worked late into the night last night to clean it up and residents fear it could just be a sign of bigger problems to come. >> it's going to be raining for five more days. you just worry what's going to happen. >> like this is a harbinger or something? >> exactly. yeah. just the start of it. >> the dog there growling in the background. people who live in the neighborhood say there have been a handful of slides in the past few weeks. drivers saw more detours in san rafael. officers closed the northbound 101 exit at lucas valley smith ranch road because of all the flooding. the underpass also flooded and that was closed to traffic. some people are just counting down the days when they can finally see everything dry again. >> i'm really tired of it. my basement's flooded. my house has been flooded. i'm pretty well done. >> who can blame her. for commuters who left their cars in the park and ride lot nearby, it took a little longer to get there. and pg&e crews are working

to restore power following yesterday's storm and here's the update for you. the hardest hit area is the east bay where there are 585 outages. followed by the south bay with 422. the north bay and peninsula have 237 and 235 respectively. only two pg&e customers in san francisco are still in the dark. you'll have our abc7 news app yet? why not? you can get live doppler 7 on the app. make sure you enable push alerts to get weather advisories straight on your phone or tablet. breaking news coming in. more than 20 people are feared dead after an avalanche buried a hotel in central italy and this is new video of one of two people rescued overnight. he was able to text and call authorities to alert him about his location. crews are digging through snow, looking for other people inside. this is criticism is already pouring in about slow response times. apparently it took rescuers two hours to get to the scene after the first call for help.

officials say yesterday's series of strong quakes may have triggered the avalanche. a horrifying video that is coming out of iran. capital city of tehran, this fire killed a number of firefighters this morning. a high-rise tower burst into flames and collapsed while people were watching on live tv. at least 30 firefighters are dead and many more could be buried in that rubble. this 17-story residential building was built in the 1960s. it was one of the first high-rises in tehran. a tv station was interviewing a journalist live on the air when that structure caught fire and we still don't know why the fire started. turning now to the eyes of the nation, washington, d.c., all looking for tomorrow's inauguration. >> security measures like dump trucks filled with sand will be used to prevent any attack as president-elect donald trump is sworn in. by the latest count, 30% of house democrats say they are boycotting the inauguration. his last presidential press

conference, president obama said he wishes the best for his successor and made reference to presidents still to come. >> if, in fact, we continue to keep opportunity open to everybody, then, yeah, we're going to have a woman president, a latino president, sw and we'll have a jewish president and a hindu president. >> aides to the president-elect say he is practicing his inauguration address and that it will be a very personal speech. abc7 news anchor dan ashley is in washington, d.c., and he will have live reports today and tomorrow about mr. trump's inauguration. protests are scheduled to start tomorrow in oakland and around the country over the inauguration of mr. trump. it's the beginning of back to back days of political demonstrations. after the election, protesters broke windows and scrawled graffiti in oakland. something organizers do not want to see this time around. on saturday, the women's march through downtown is expected to attract as many as 20,000

people. >> we talked with a good amount of businesses that actually said that they were going to have a table right outside of their business and cheering us on. >> city officials will activate their emergency operations center and all police days off have been canceled for the weekend. one car dealership along broadway told us they won't board up their windows but they will move their cars inside. and as a result of these protests, b.a.r.t. is expanding its capacity. the agency is going to be running longer trains, ten cars each, beginning saturday. the trains will not be running more often, they'll just have more cars on them. new this morning, another round of recalls involving takata airbags. this time, 13 car companies are recalling 650 to 1,000 vehicles in the u.s. go to our website, abc7news.com, for the full list. the problem is the airbags can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and sending shrapnel everywhere.

16 people have been killed due to this problem. for the first time, the san francisco police department has released body cam video. this is from an officer involved shooting. so here's a part of it. >> get on the ground! get on the ground! [ gunshots ] this happened january 6. 4 #-year-old sean moore was agitated and verbally aggressive while two officers asked him in a calm manner to come down from the top of the stairs. officers tried to subdue the uncooperative moore with their batons and then fired two shots. family members say moore suffers from paranoid schizophrenic. he was hit in the stomach and the groin. the interim police chief says proper policy was used. >> i think there was great restraint shown. as you can hear the officers clearly say, he has something in his hand. they did not default to gun. they used pepper spray, they used a baton. >> photos show the officers'

injuries after the scuffle. moore now faces several charges, including assault on a police officer. if you commute by ferry, then you're probably still talking about last night's ride home. it was a wild ride for some people. >> and get this. you could be in for another round of this tomorrow morning. amy hollyfield is live at the vallejo ferry terminal with some incredible video. hi, amy. >> reporter: hi, reggie. look behind me. see this large cat ma ran ferry? riders tell me this ride is pretty smooth. it's those smaller ferries and we just watched one depart, where you might get the bumpy ride. this might give you second thoughts if you're a ferry rider. look how these passengers were tossed about during yesterday's storm. they had to stop running the ferries and cancel routes because it was so windy and choppy. snacks were falling off the shelves. it sounds like it was pretty miserable. >> it was pretty rough out there. it was kind of like a roller

coaster, wave effect. it was a couple of people out there getting seasick and stuff like that. it was pretty bad. >> they've canceled them a few times in the past but this was extremely rough. i've never seen swells that big out in the bay. >> reporter: well, they ran the buses last night to get those ferry riders home. today is expected to be smooth, not skroer problems for today, but this could happen again tomorrow when we get some more storms, that's why we wanted to show you this video so you can start preparing, deciding whether your stomach can handle that tomorrow or maybe you want to come up with another commute plan. reporting live from vallejo, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. yes, we have a small craft advisory for tomorrow where we could see that happen again. the winds are going to be a little bit lighter than they were last night, though. here's a look at walnut creek, our southbound 680 commute down to 24, looking a little damp right now. in fact frs it's going to be poor for all of us during the

morning hours because of the wetness that's out there and the isolated showers. out and about, have the umbrella handy especially through the early afternoon hours. little bit of a break this early evening. in fact here's a look at some of the showers from sfo, all the way down to redwood city and over towards milpitas and up fremont and in through the sunol grade. so far, no reports of delays at sfo. i checked about ten minutes ago. i'll check again. today, a 1 on our storm impact scale. scattered showers, and again lighter breezes out there. down in the south bay we're about 45 in los gatos to 50 in mountain view and los altos hills. right there in the middle, we have san jose at 47. most of us in the mid 40s to low 50s. 52 to 56 this afternoon. notice the scattered nature of the light and darker greens. that's how light those showers are going to be. yellows, oranges, and reds, they're coming back this evening, hour by hour look at that next storm next. good morning, mike. and overall we're doing okay this morning. we don't have any major issues

second story window. that was the wife. her husband was still inside. >> i saw the fire and the lady hanging like this. i had my sandals and no shirt. i ran out, tried to open the door. i was hoping it was open, you know, open so i could help her. she was already down. >> another neighbor fortunately got that husband out and the couple was taken to a hospital. a third person was treated for smoke inhalation and a firefighter suffered minor injuries. police have released a new photo of a man they say tried to steal a laptop whieg a uc berkeley student was asleep in his dorm room. the victim woke up last friday morning to find this man in his room at the school's international house residence hall. the suspect ran away when he saw the state of the union was actually awake. police say the suspect is in his 20s, about 5'8" with a short hair and a mustache.

holding hands in show of solidarity. live in fremont, lonni rivera, abc7 news. the state has launched a new initiative to allow public schools to receive free lead testing of their water sources. approximately 1/3 of the state's 9,000 kindergarten through 12th grade schools are connected to community water systems. officials say old pipes and rust could contribute to lead leaking into the drinking water, even though the systems are checked routinely. the state water board says additional testing is going to help ensure the water is safe for our kids. crews right now trying beat mother nature. they are scrambling to stabilize this massive sinkhole in grass valley about 60 miles northeast of sacramento. last week's storms caused this mess and now workers are concerned this weekend's storms could exacerbate conditions. just to give you an idea of how big this thing is. authorities say it's about seven stories deep and 250 feet wide.
