the united states. he had a very busy day as he arrived in washington. first arriving request his wife melania at joint base andrews. then attending a luncheon with key republicans. moving on to a somber and silent wreath laying ceremony. the president-elect headed to the lincoln memorial for a concert, a two hour make america great again concert. it was billed with a number of performers. the president spoke briefly before a couple hundred thousand people. here's what he has to say. >> it's a movement that began. it's a movement that started, and that's a movement like we've never seen anywhere in the world they say. there's never been a movement like this. and it's something very, very special. we're going to unify our

country. >> a lot of people from the bay area are here in washington to take part in the inauguration, some are here in support of donald trump, and many others are here to protest his presidency, even as he begins his first term tomorrow. there are also others from the bay area, who happen to be here for another reason. and talking about the mayor's conference that was attended by a number of bay area mayors. including sam lacardo of san jose. he came here to meet with mayors around the country to discuss all the issues they deal with at the local level. crime, education issues, budgeting issues and so much more. we had a chance to speak this afternoon on the streets of washington. >> as a region we can show the country that ideological differences don't mean we have to have divided communities. >> would you like to see more of that at the national level? >> we certainly would, but i know there's a different dynamic that works inside the beltway, than at home. and frankly, i'm in local

government, i feel very blessed. >>. >> mayor ed lee was here as well as a number of other bay area mayors. many of them will stay and attend the inauguration. many others were back on a plane. not attending the inauguration. this city is electric and filled with people who are gathering here to take part in the ceremony that will happen right here behind me at the capital among those in attendance will be a number of protesters who have come from the bay area to make sure their voices are heard. i hear that many of these demonstrators are going to be extremely vocal and disruptive as they possibly can. >> i met with one protester from the bay area today, here's what he told me. >> i'm dressed like a billionaire, i don't see why

anyone who wasn't a billionaire would vote for him. the only people he's going to take care of are people like him. >> you're convinced of that? >> absolutely. he started off with $14 million. that's not working hard, that's starting off at the top, you know. >> i understand from a very reliable source that a number of the bay area protesters have ended up with tickets in their hands that will put them close to the stage. they intend to make their presence felt tomorrow all across this city. there is great excitement and anticipation about what is going to happen tomorrow. there is also enormous security. something like $100 million spent on security. protesters will be here enmass. some like stewart who i met are going to be vocal. others may be more disruptive than that. all the security is designed to keep people safe at a very

following that story all day. se joins us live from oakland. leann? >> hi. the diocese has said that there are five schools closing, but they would not give us the names of those schools. we were able to confirm through parents the names of three of the schools. and what could i say, parents are shocked and heart broken. this parent was handed an unexpected letter this afternoon while picking up his daughter from saint martin in oakland the oakland catholic diocese says the school will be closing at the end of the year. parents were notified as they picked up their children and grandchildren. >> it's one of the few schools that's affordable. and this is going to be a great loss. >> they decided to tell parents in a meeting scheduled for this evening. >> i'm surprised because i really like the school.

>> we'll get through it somehow some way. it's a great school. >> in a confidential letter obtained by abc news. the diocese cited the reasons for closing the schools. low enrollment. the diocese says all options have been exhausted. these five schools charge between 4 and $8,000 a year in tuition, low compared to other private schools. at saint martin deporas, over 95% of children receive some form of financial aide. >> good values, good morals, respect and love for one anot r another. >> veronica lives across the street from the school and the school is beloved by the community. >> what will go thereafter the school leaves? >> i hope she can figure out how

to save this school it's a beautiful school. in oakland, leann melendez, abc 7 news. on to the storm watch. a man in the santa cruz mountains won't be able to slide into his hot tub tonight. recent heavy rain eroded the ground. sending the deck down the hill and his hot tub with it. the deck splintered into pieces, there's no word if the tub is salvageable sandia has a look at the forecast. >> you may see more scenes like that repeating tomorrow. especially during the morning hours. we're kind of in a little bit of a break, what you're seeing here is moisture up in the clouds, not all of this is reaching the ground. it's in advance of our next storm, as we go into street level radar, light showers around bodega avenue, d street, definitely pulling back here to

show you the wider perspective tracking the storm that's really going to impact your morning commute. you can see that it is coming in with a lot of moisture, it's going to drop down from the gulf of alaska, as this converges here, we're going with a 2 on our storm impact scale. it will bring heavy rain, winds, big waves, slight possibility of thunder and snow level down to 4,000 feet. tonight the rain approaches by 10:00. it's moving on shore, the worst of it comes through during the overnight as you'll notice into your morning commute. the oranges and yellows indicating the heavier rain will be a clap or two of thunder, the biggest concerns with this, debris flows in the burn areas. ponding on the roadways. power outages, river flooding right now looks low. i'll be back with the hour by hour forecast at what's ahead coming up. >> thank you so much. >> lesley brinkley joins us live from orinda.

lesley? >> the traffic and the commute tonight certainly easier than last night, got a respite from the rain over here in the east bay for much of the day. according to one tree expert i talked to, get ready like you said, for the next 1-2 punch. plenty of toppled trees and other problems throughout the east bay. >> a mudslide took out this fence at highway 24. and runoff from last night's rain is continuing to erode the collapsed roadway here. peering over the abyss, you can see big chunks of striped asphalt with watt irrushing by. nearby is a dangerously dangling guardrail. >> it was a little shocking to see how big it was. and the fact that it's grown. it doesn't look good. >> repairing it could take a year. >> they just signed an emergency proclamation as they anticipate the next storm. >> we'll be braced for winds,

whenever winds are blowing, especially with saturated soils. we'll anticipate potential trees coming down. >> it was roots up in downtown oakland where a huge tree collapsed overnight at 15th and martin luther king, taking down cable lines and absolutely decimating the sidewalk. crews work to clean it all up. over at lake merritt, falling branches took out some of the iconic lakeside lights. one homeowner awoke to a tree crashing through his fence. on the right side of your screen, you can see how it just missed a child's swing in the backyard. next door, the massive acacia toppled a large tree. tree trimming services told her they're booked up until february. more storms on the way ready to turn things inside out. in the east bay, lesley brinkley, nbc 7 news. all eyes are on washington, d.c., tomorrow for the presidential inauguration. it's the start of a new era, and the end of another.

tomorrow's inauguration will be greeted with a peaceful protest at the golden gate bridge. this is a live picture of the golden gate. the event starts at 10:00 tomorrow, authorities are warning of potential traffic delays. thousands of people are expected to march in women's

marches saturday. three major local ones are scheduled in san francisco, san jose and oakland. in oakland, marchers will gather at madison park. they're go up oak street to grand avenue, along the edge of the lake. melanie joins us with advice for protesters and the public. >> we saw a peaceful march out here earlier tonight, law enforcement agencies and the american civil lib ertls union are sharing tips to keep people from getting arrested as they express their first amendment rights. >> property destruction like we saw here in oakland after the election is not a protected form of free speech. with widespread gatherings expected over the next two days, local law enforcement agencies and the american civil liberties union want to make sure people know what is. >> our main goal is to facilitate the freedom of speech everybody has. >> police say as long as people maintain civility.

they should not expect any law enforcement action. they will have representatives, monitoring each gathering. >> we really want to ensure that the rights of the public to express their viewpoints is protected. >> the aclu will be giving out pocket sized guides about your rights when it comes to law enforcement. the aclu recommends having a government issued id on you, to make the process go more smoothly. also -- >> there can be immigration consequences for arrests. think carefully about that. >> snapping photos or taking video of interactions with law enforcement is within your rights. however -- >> if you start to enter the space and start to interfere with what's going on, that's when it can start to escalet. >> you could be arrested for obstruction of justice. law enforcement needs a warrant or your consent to search you.

the california highway patrol has a warning tonight for drivers in the 680 highway 24 area. >> there have been reports of objects being thrown from

overpasses in that area. alyssa harrington spoke with one driver whose car is now damaged. it's a story you'll see only on abc 7 news. >> it was such a scary moment. and i can't -- i can still hear the sound it was awful. >> her shattered sunroof. the glass broken by an object she thinks was purposely hurled from an overpass. >> it was either a rock or some sort of a gun that did the damage. >> churchill was driving home to alamo tuesday. when the object struck the top of her suv. this happened as she drove under the overpass right where highway 24 meets up with 680. >> it damaged the sunroof, it shattered it, and it's -- as i found out a difficult part to replace, it's rather a massive inveens, but at the same time i feel very fortunate and lucky, it could have been so much different. >> officer brandon kariya says they have received between 15 and 25 similar reports since

i will say, the other side is going absolutely crazy. they're going crazy. >> that's president-elect trump talking about how capitol hill democrats are receiving his cabinet nominees. right now, he's at an inauguration eve ball. following a spectacular fireworks display and concert on the national mall. the nation prepares to swear in its next president, many people are reflecting on the current president's legacy. thanks very much. thinking a lot today about what it must be like for president barack obama to spend his last night in the white house. and for president-elect donald trump to spent his first night in the white house. president trump says he will be a unifier, he will bring people together and bring real change.

many debate that. he's already facing a lot of push back from senate's newest members. including camel la harris, who told our sister station she is voting against general john kelly donald trump's choice to run the homeland security department. kelly has gotten high marks from many democrats. harris says she doesn't support him, because he can't guarantee her he will support daca. it allows certain undocumented immigrants who were brought here as children to avoid deportation. >> i asked him repeatedly whether he would honor the promise that our country made to those kids. >> my view was, he was going to be helpful in this issue, we'll have to wait and see.

>> dianne feinstein says she does not announce her positions on cabinet votes. both those senators are on the intelligence committee, investigating russia's role in the election. here behind me, you can see the capitol all aglow, this is where all the action will take place tomorrow as we inaugurate the 45th president of the united states. we take time now to look back at the past eight years. president barack obama entered the white house breaking the color barrier. he took over the nation at the height of the great recession. bay area congressional leaders say that was one of the challenges that president obama overcame in office. >> congratulations, mr. president. >> when he took office, the u.s. was involved in fighting two wars, financial institutions and the auto industry were on the verge of collapse. and millions of americans were without health care. >> i think he's walked into a

situation where one would ask, why would you want to be president of the united states at this time. >> history is going to look back on him as being a transformative president. because of all the progress and change that happened under his watch. >> the president brokered deals to save the auto 12re, and built on plans to upright the financial sector, part of that was helped by the american recovery and reinvestment act. $800 billion in government spending and tax cuts that jump started the economy. >> his legacy is a strong economy. the stock market was around 4,000 at the time he took office. >> overseas, his administration is the one that found and kill ed bin laden.

>> the president smoothed over u.s. foreign relations. >> he did everything he could do to make sure that a country 90 miles away would be able to engage in trade and travel with our own country. >> democrats call the passage of the affordable care act the president's biggest success. republicans dubbed it obama care. >> there are 30 million people that have health insurance today that didn't have it before. 50 million people who couldn't get health insurance because they had pre-existing conditions. >> well, of course, we know the republican led congress is making it a priority to repeal and replace the affordable care act. everything will probably pause for a brief few hours tomorrow as they inaugurate the next president. and then this town is promising

one of the oldest hospitals in san francisco was just hit with the most severe penalty the public health department can issue. it's because the patient died and the state determined the hospital was responsible. the patient was being treated at laguna honda hospital which marked its 150th anniversary last october. in november of 2014, three staff members took several hospital residents out as a group to a movie theater, as they were leaving, a nursing assistant left one patient in a wheelchair when he went to turn on the van. the wheelchair rolled and the

patient fell face first. he had been at the hospital for years for treatment of dementia. laguna honda has already made several changes. they face a $100,000 fine from the state. a new generation of naturalized u.s. citizens may have been created as a result of the november presidential election. several of 50 immigrants who took their loyalty oath today say they take their voting rights seriously in the hopes of making a difference at the polls. >> definitely one of the reasons i applied for citizenship, i'm looking forward to voting in the next election. >> victor is a truck mechanic in san jose with concern about the impact of future immigration policy on his family and others.

he and his wife have two boys, 2-year-old dante and anthony, he was motivated to become a citizen. >> the most important reason is to vote and the second one is to give my family together. >> it's not enough for the latino community to organize and protest, however, as a marine veteran, he recognizes that the president who may have contrary reviews, is the military's commander in chief. >> i could disagree with the way he thinks of immigration and other opinions. but i'm willing to support his decisions. >> a toronto native, he's confident he and his fellow new citizens will use their voting and free speech rights in positive ways. >> these are important things to the united states of america. so i believe -- i strongly believe that these issues will be overcome and the country will
