and tomorrow, at this time, we will have a new president. donald trump will have been sworn into office. and president obama's term in office will be over. tonight, all around the city, very busy day. not only for the republicans who have gathered here, but for the protesters who have gathered to make their voices heard. and the security forces, getting ready to protect hundreds of thousands of people who will be outside the capitol and lining the streets. this was a ball we attended not far from this location, with a number of republicans from the bay area, who have never been to an inaugural ball before. they were awfully excited to be here. what would you say to women of color? men of color? men of different -- people of different ethnic backgrounds or sexual preferences who feel that donald trump's presidency threatens them. what would you say?

>> donald trump's presence doesn't threaten anyone. they may feel that way. but i think it's because of, you know, the mainstream media or the large cable network media. i would encourage them to listen to donald trump. he has asked americans on several occasions to give him a chance. give him a chance. he wants to be the president for all americans. >> reporter: the number of republicans here who traveled from the bay area to be here for this celebration. and inauguration tomorrow. perhaps the biggest event of the night, the donors' dinner. president-elect trump reminisced about his election-night victory. and told the crowd, he outworked anybody who ran for office. he praised his nominees for the cabinet positions. >> we have a cabinet, i believe, the likes of which has ever been appointed. there's never been a cabinet

like this. the other side is going absolutely crazy. >> reporter: that speech capped a busy day. earlier, he had a somber moment with vice president-elect mike pence, as they placed a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. and he spoke to hundreds of people who gathered at the lincoln memorial for the inaugural concert. the two-hour event included a big firework show. he told the crowd he was elected because people want real change. and he is confident he can unify the country. but not everyone is convinced of that, clearly, including a bay area blogger i spoke with, who explained why he came to be here. >> i'm here as a protest, obviously. i'm dressed -- the only people he is going to be taking care of is people like him. he doesn't know working people. >> reporter: and you're convinced of that. >> absolutely. he started off with $14 million.

that's not working hard. that's starting off at the top. >> reporter: he is one of many protesters. hundreds, maybe thousands who have come to washington. everyone hopes that nothing happens that put anyone in harm's way. they plan to be local tomorrow. at the inaugural itself, and as the parade moves forward. security here is tight. and there's concern there could be problems. there's a lot of controversy and a lot of anger surrounding this inauguration tomorrow. by and large, the city is celebrating tonight. what an interesting night. this late at night, it's 2:00 in the morning here. and president obama is spending his final night in the white house. president-elect trump is spending the night at blare house across from the white house. and tomorrow night, donald trump will be the 45th president of

the united states. we'll have live coverage, of course. but for now, in washington, dan ashley, abc 7 news. >> thank you. law enforcement across the bay area are assuring people they are ready for inaugural protests. we go to oakland to see what's being done there. >> reporter: that's for sure. many businesses and companies here in oakland, taking no chances tonight. boarding up windows on broadway because many have been targeted before. and tonight, inauguration eve protests have begin. this group of protesters marched many are survivors of violence, who fear the incoming trump administration. >> i look at trump coming into office. and i remember the fist of the man that hit me. >> reporter: police officers surrounded headquarters. but the demonstration was peaceful.

earlier, another march was headed to city hall. members of oakland's interfaith community worry many will be left without health care if donald trump repeals the affordable care act. >> access to health care is something that my community has fought for for decades. >> reporter: the mayor says oakland will protect those fearing deportation. >> we have a sanctuary city. we will work to protect the undocumented. >> reporter: oakland police says it's ready for giant post-inaugural demonstrations for friday and saturday. all available officers on-duty. vandalism will not be tall tolerated. >> e with want to have a safe place for freedom of speech. >> reporter: businesses taking no chances. boarding up windows in case things get out of hand. including this kaiser hospital facility. this is where you work?

you hope it doesn't get vandalized? >> yeah. that causes headaches for everybody. >> reporter: for many, a new chapter in free speech. >> many oh other events are scheduled for tomorrow and saturday, but in secelebration. organizers are not advertising events because they don't want to be disrupted. >> reporter: juan hearn tez is in washington, d.c. for the inauguration of donald trump. during the campaign, he was attacked at a trump rally at san jose. he says it is great to be celebrating a win with friends. >> we can be out and proud. and over there we can't. >> reporter: len duncan has organized a viewing party in the south bay. >> it's people that are so happy, ecstatic is the word, about trump's win.

end of the school year. we go live in the newsroom with why they're closing. lisa? >> reporter: the diocese wants to revamp its elementary school system. they say staff was spread too thin. enrollment numbers were low. and things weren't working out too well. that's why they want to roll out a new model. parents night for a closed door meeting. tonight, they learned their children's beloved school is one of five schools set to close at the end of the school year. >> i was surprised. and i'm sad, too. i loved this school. >> reporter: many students went home with this letter, which explain the reason for the closures. the diocese spokesperson insists the consolidating the 12 elementary schools into 7, will allow for a new model. >> we believe it will be a

success. we've not seen any diocese that's tried this where it's failed. they've all been successful. >> reporter: but parents and students alike are worried. >> i feel kind of sad because i kind of don't know if my friends are going to the school that i will go to next year. >> i'm saddened because this school has turned my child around. she's become a straight-a student. >> reporter: the closures will impact 640 students and 90 staffers. teachers will be given priority consideration at the other schools within the diocese. uber has agreed to pay $20 million to settle a lawsuit over driver compensation claims. uber claims drivers in san francisco earn more than $74,000 annually. but according to the complaint, less than 10% earn that much money. president obama in his final
