and her siblings when a really strong wave came in and dragged them deeper into the ocean. that is when mom and dad chased after them and as they tried to rescue them, they too got swept into the ocean by this strong wave. you see that there are people there working with the little girl. she seems to be unconscious. a triathlete, carlos, happened to be training on the beach, saw what was going on, and single handedly was able to rescue all five members of this family. >> wow. >> so the little girl we see seems to be in the worst condition but everybody had to be rescued? >> it turns out that he's also training to be a lifeguard. >> just think about that. like literally when it comes down to it, there's only one person that could have saved that family. a triathlete who lives in the

ocean and also just so happens to be a lifeguard. >> especially because there weren't any other life guards on duty. so had this guy not decided to go out training that evening. >> the whole family. >> this could have been a different story. as they continue working with the girl, we see suddenly that her stomach starts moving and then there's a moment when you realize she's back. >> wow. you hear her now too. oh, wow. the president-elect and his family are waking up this morning at blair house, the president's guest house. it's right across the street from the white house. marci gonzalez takes us step by step through the events on tap. >> reporter: good morning. it all gets started just hours from now. donald trump and his wife will start their day with a prayer service followed by coffee or tea at the white house with president obama and the first lady, and then the president-elect and the president will ride together here to the capitol for the swearing in ceremony. officials in washington d.c. are planning for 800 to 900,000 people to be here to watch as donald trump takes the oath of office becoming america's 45th president. then obamas will leave for vacation as the pageantry here continues and finally the inaugural balls and the celebrations expected to continue well into the night.

>> our thanks to marci gonzalez in washington. at a preinaugural ball thrown by indiana, mike pence was emotional reflecting on his roots as a hoosier. >> it's been a dream come true for him. pence described the transition to his new role and called it bittersweet and promised to bring his hoosier common sense to washington. >> the past years we've had the incredible privilege to serve the people of indiana as governor. words cannot describe the honor and the gratitude we feel for having the chance to lead the state we love. >> he managed to recover and got it together joking that as exgovernor of indiana he's unemployed until he takes his own oath. >> he could always get obama care if he gets health care in

the meantime. >> in the meantime thousands of people took to the streets in washington and new york to protest the coming trump administration. protesters clashed with police in riot gear in washington. some were seen setting small fires in the streets. police used pepper spray against some of the crowd. meanwhile at least 64 democrats expect to boycott the inauguration. >> and then there's the weather. >> let's look at the forecast in d.c. as well as other trouble spots. thanks and good morning. unfortunately we're tracking wet weather for the presidential inauguration. notice the temperatures later today climbing into the upper 40s. that is some good news. we're not concerned about any frozen precipitation. this is all rain. but, again, rain in itself will likely create travel delays here for the d.c. metro along interstate 95.

then as we bounce out to the west coast, also expecting big wind packs due to heavy flooding rains and heavy mountain snows. and look at this. heading toward the weekend, we are concerned about numerous thunderstorms that could turn violent and severe along the gulf coast. back to you. all right. justin, thanks. other headlines in the overnight. chaos in australia this morning. that's where a man deliberately drove his car into a crowd killing at least three people. 20 others were injured in the attack that reminded many of the deadly truck attacks in germany and france last year. so far police say this morning's attack in melbourne where the australian open is taking place right now is not linked to terrorism. the mexican drug lord el chapo is in the united states and will appear in federal court. he arrived under heavy security and was taken to a new york city lockup.

the u.s. treasury described him as the most powerful drug trafficker in the world. >> back in the incoming administration. as donald trump takes office, the prospective members of his cabinet are embroiled on a showdown on capitol hill. >> yesterday trump's pick for treasury secretary was on the hot seat. mary bruce has the details. >> reporter: nominees barrel through capitol hill, and donald trump offering his support with this bold declaration. >> we have, by far, the highest i.q. of any cabinet ever assembled. >> reporter: but the confirmation hearings are growing testy. treasury secretary nominee getting a grilling. steve mnuchin confronting accusations he profited by foreclosing on vulnerable homeowners.

a spotlight on his hotel. sean spicer dismissed the issue. >> the idea that he's going to his own hotel shouldn't be a shocker. it's a beautiful place. i encourage you to go there if you haven't been by. >> the hotel could prove to be the first clash between his business interest and the presidency. there's a clause barring elected u.s. officials from deriving benefit from it. democrats are already pushing for that lease to be cancelled. hillary clinton is somewhat low profile after the election. she will be there for the swearing in ceremony she hoped would be her own. we learned she will be about five yards from trump as he takes the oath of office. >> once he becomes president, trump is expected to sign a series of executives starting as early as today. >> rick klein has more on what the new president is immediately facing as he tries to make good

on his signature promises. >> reporter: getting inaugurated is easy. governing is difficult. the first 100 days are littered with problems. he is going to start with the campaign promises. look for him to deliver early and thoroughly on repealing and replacing obama care. and the border wall. that feeds to his second big priority. he has to watch his right. he needs to start giving on the conservative promises early. he needs to start reigning in the budget and deliver on a supreme court nominee that the right gets behind. that's how he solidifies his base. and then watch his left. president trump is going to try to reach out to democrats and pick them off for other priorities including a giant infrastructure package. he's going to enrage some in his party when he does it. that's part of what he's trying to achieve. there's people rooting for his failure. he's going to have to walk a tight rope in the first 100 days. >> needless to say, a lot on his

plate. remember to stay tuned to abc throughout the morning for coverage. >> our live coverage of the inauguration begins at 7:00 a.m. eastern time. >> we should note this is the end of an era as well. president obama making history in his final hours in the white house by commuting sentences for 330 nonviolent drug offenders. that brings the total number of clemencies to 1700. more than any president in the nation's history. he also set a one day record with the 330. he reduced sentences for hundreds of inmates including chelsea manning. the president started his project back in 2014. it was all aimed at shortening drug sentences that he viewed as severe. >> el chapo guzman is now in new york. he'll appear in federal court today to face trafficking and other charges. the leader of what's described as the world's most powerful drug cartel arrived in new york

under extremely tight security after his extradition from mexico. jack riley who helped bring the case against guzman says this is a milestone for u.s. law enforcement. >> i was on the job for 32 years. this is the best day of my life. he's responsible for more deaths than al qaeda or bin laden ever. this is a great day for the good guys on both sides of the border. >> guzman escaped twice. this was in 2015 caught on surveillance video. law enforcement officials say it won't happen in the u.s., he'll be watched around the clock. overseas the search for survivors of an avalanche in central italy. the clock winds down. the avalanche flattened a four star mountain resort.

it trapped at least 30 people inside. the search for survivors is hampered by heavy snowfall and concerns the building itself may collapse. at least two bodies recovered so far. four powerful earthquakes that hit wednesday may have triggered that avalanche. america sees a smooth transfer of power today, but in gambia, not so much. the long time leader who lost the election refusing to step down. the guy who won has taken the oath of office but from another country. now military troops from several countries have been sent in to remove the old leader who once said he could rule for a billion years. no matter what you think in this political season, it is fortunate we have that peaceful transition of power in the u.s. >> just wait. it's not midday yet. >> here's hoping. >> we'll keep this afternoon -- things international for this one. this is like the running of the bulls. it takes place in a small town in spain. >> all those people right there

>> reporter: the dog then seems to go under water. before being rescued. the response to the video swift. peta calling for a boycott to the film. american humane, an organization that ensures animal safety onset hiring an investigator to look into the matter and suspending the safety rep who worked on the film. and the actor who provides the voice for the dog in "a dog's purpose" saying i have reached out to ask for an explanation for the disturbing images. >> reporter: while the movie studio is not commenting, producers saying on the day of the shoot, the dog did not want to perform the stunt so the production team did not proceed with filming that shot. but the stunt seems to have been completed eventually. the production company telling tmz the dog is happy and healthy, but many questioning that troubling video. >> and amblin is conducting their own investigation.
