greatest show in democracy has moved on from this spot behind me at the capitol to some of the these inaugural balls as the country welcomes its 45th president. yes, a new era began today as president donald trump was sworn into office. the traditional celebrations under way this evening. even as thousands of protesters take to the streets. >> preserve, protect and defend. >> the constitution of the united states. >> the constitution of the united states. >> so help me god. >> so help me god. >> congratulations, mr. president. >> reporter: with those words, another chapter in american history begins. donald trump becoming the 45th president of the united states, taking the oath of office, then in a 16-minute long inaugural address, sharing his vision for the next four years. >> america will start winning again, winning like never before. we will bring back our jobs. we will bring back our borders.
4:01 pm
>> reporter: before departing washington with his family bound for vacation in palm springs, now former president obama leaving a note in the oval office for his successor. the two then sharing a few moments together ahead of the official transfer of power. >> this is not a period, this is a comma. in the continuing story of building america. >> reporter: president trump getting right to work, signing his first executive orders. before kicking off a day of celebrations. a luncheon in the capitol rotunda. followed by the inaugural parade. police, military and federal agents working to keep protesters from interfering. thousands of supporters lining pennsylvania avenue, honoring the new president. honoring and some protesting. we saw a variety of signs, some
4:02 pm
thanking president obama, others criticizing the new president and others very positive about donald trump. we saw it all out here today. there were many people from the bay area that made this trip to washington for the inauguration. they listened to what president trump had to say as he addressed the crowd today, they watched the ceremony take place, this uniquely american ceremony. i was able to catch up with a number of them. we talked to independents, republicans, democrats, from the bay area to get their reaction on this historic day. listen. >> it's an interesting speech. i think the results are going to be important in terms of execution, that's what matters. >> what did you think of the inauguration? >> i thought it was fantastic. the spirit is wonderful. we're going to make america great again. >> i'm actually very happy that i'm here. we have a new president and he's our president. it's not -- he's not president for half the country or 45% of the country, he's the president of the united states. >> reporter: an interestingly
4:03 pm
that gentleman really identifies more as a democrat, but you heard him say he believes that on this day he's our president, even though he didn't support donald trump and doesn't generally support the republican party. heard a lot of that sentiment from those who attended, even those who were not donald trump supporters, maybe they were republicans but didn't initially support donald trump. maybe some of them were democrats who didn't support the republican party but they came here today to witness history. of cours many others came here to washington to protest what was happening. you heard jeers and shouts during the inauguration ceremony. then afterward, things got rather intense on the streets of washington. more than 200 people were arrested during inauguration protests at the nation's capital today. one limousine, as you saw, was set on fire and the windows of some other cars were smashed. at one point a few protesters used sticks to vandalize a starbucks store and a bank. police responded by using flash bang grenades and pepper spray and attempted to chase down some
4:04 pm
of the vandals. again, roughly 200 protesters arrested today. it did get intense out there on the streets today as it has in many other parts of the country and certainly back home in san francisco. i know you'll be reporting on what happened in the bay area today. but meantime here, as the events at the capitol have shifted now to the inaugural balls going around the city, for the most part the protests have quieted down here in this city so now it's an evening of celebration for those who came here to witness this historic event, the swearing-in of donald trump, the 45th president of the united states. i'll have a lot more here in this hour, so stay with me live from washington. for a moment let's go back to larry and ama. >> thanks, dan. as dan mentioned, there were protests all across the bay area, from san francisco to oakland to the golden gate bridge, and they are not over yet. >> we have team coverage on that part of the story. cornell bernard is in oakland. we begin with melanie woodrow in

4:06 pm
outside a building, protesters say is partially owned by president trump. >> this is day one of standing up for what we believe in and what we know to be true as americans. >> reporter: with signs held high, protesters chanted and sang. >> we're happy and we want to continue to push so that california can lead. >> officers are here just to make sure things are peaceful. we're working very closely with the organizers, we're communicating with them. >> police in my opinion today have been here to protect us and keep people safe. >> reporter: as rain began to fall, some of the youngest ones here sang for light. before officers and protesters made their way to city hall. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> and about a thousand protesters also marched across oakland today. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is live with a look at what happened there. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, larry.

attended. it was a little bit cold but not bad. but if you look back at the record crowds that president obama had eight years ago, nothing close to that this time. certainly a large crowd, but the park service after some controversy yesterday, the park service got out of the crowd estimation business so it's tough to get an exact number. well attended but not nearly what many had anticipated. >> all right, dan, thanks so much. we'll check back with you later on at 5:00 and at 6:00. from the new first lady to congressional democrats, the fashion statements that were made today in washington, d.c. i'm 7 on your side's michael finney. is there help for ending those robo call
