good morning, it's saturday, january 21. i'm cornell barnard in for chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at the weather and it is wet out there. here's meteorologist lisa argen. hey, lisa. >> hey, cornell. good morning to you. we are in between storms so we're going to look at the heavy downpours this morning and right now, live doppler 7 indicating we have a solid shield of rain from central and southern marin county over into the east bay, further to the south, you can see a little bit of that yellow right along the coast, and from concord through martinez, 680 into san leandro and oakland. light to moderate rain and further to the east over the hills we have a rain/snow mix but we've had some heavier rain from belmont, redwood city into palo alto right now so take care if you're headed out on the roadways. you can see around mt. hamilton, some of the pink there and this is where that levee has breached and we have a flood warning and flood advisory right on through monday.

so, a flood warning for the entire bay area as we get into a pretty strong fold front that's headed our way tonight with gusty winds. i'll detail the entire outlook for the week ahead coming up. well, today is the first full day of donald trump's presidency. it was a historic and busy day and night for the trump family. it was both pomp and circumstance and getting right to work. people from across the country, including many here in the bay area, are in d.c. to protest today in today's women's march. as many as 200,000 people are expected to participate. organizers say they want to tell the new administration that on day one, women's rights are human rights. >> personally, i've been waiting for a place to plug in, in some universal way, in some national way. >> some protests yesterday turned violent. others celebrated and are looking forward to the new -- to the change president trump is promising to bring. hundreds of those witnessed his swearing in ceremony at the u.s.

capitol, capped off by three official inaugural balls. dan ashley has details. ♪ i did it my way >> reporter: a new era ushered in with some old traditions. president donald trump and first lady melania trump made the rounds. >> preserve, protect, and defend. >> the constitution of the united states. >> the constitution of the united states. >> so help me god. >> so help me god. >> congratulations, mr. president. >> reporter: the 45th president of the united states was sworn into office, then shared with the cheering crowd his vision for the country. >> it's going to be only america first. >> reporter: former president obama is now on vacation in palm springs after moving out of the white house, leaving a note for his successor and these words for the american people. >> this has been the privilege of my life.

>> reporter: and though protesters clashed with police in the streets of the nation's capital, it did not stop the work from beginning or the thousands of supporters from lining pennsylvania avenue for the inaugural parade. honoring the new president. the president had a few comments about the weather on his big day. >> the crowd was unbelievable. i looked at the rain, which just never came. you know, we finished the speech, went inside, it poured, then we came outside, the helicopter scene was an incredible scene. and then amazingly, it rained, and then we went out. it's like god was looking down on us. >> reporter: donald trump also signed his first executive order for federal agencies to ease the burden of president obama's sweeping health care law. it comes after congress voted for a full repeal of the affordable care act. he met a lot of people from the bay area who traveled 3,000

miles to be in washington. one man from orinda has this message to those who did not support the president. >> they need to give him a chance. america needs change. he's going to bring change. some of it they'll like, some of it they may not like but they've got to give him a chance. i think he'll be a great president. >> reporter: of course all of those who came here to protest president trump have a different message that they want to tell the nation, that they are watching and they expect president trump to look after their interests as well. for newly sworn-in president donald trump, this will be his first full day as the 45th president of the united states. capping off, really, an interesting celebratory day here in washington filled with just tremendous events and i think everyone who came here to celebrate the inauguration left happy. those who were here to protest also got their voices heard. in washington, dan ashley, abc7 news. well, today, thousands of

people in 600 cities worldwide are expected to take part in those women's marches, the major ones in our area are planned in oakland, san francisco, and san jose. protest marches took place last night as well. abc7 news reporter katie utehs has more from oakland. >> we are here to help facilitate your march but you need to move eastbound on the sidewalk towards the plaza. >> reporter: a tightly corralled march of several hundred people circled downtown oakland. >> people are angry. people are frustrated. people feel like their government hasn't heard them. >> reporter: oakland police lined the streets as local attorneys observed. >> we're here to make sure that people get their chance to protest peacefully and we're hoping to help people protest and yet avoid being arrested. >> reporter: a diverse crowd bouncing from one police line to the next. >> everything's been peaceful. i would describe it as tense at times, but peaceful. >> i can resist. >> reporter: an open mike event earlier in the day garnered large, emotional crowds. >> i'm a veteran.

i served. i served in the united states navy. you know, but if i was in the service today, i would go awol. i would not serve under him. he does not belong in the white house. >> reporter: the socialist alternative is organizing for the trump administration. >> mass movements are going to be necessary to stop trump's attacks. >> reporter: police arrested three people, two for vandalism with a marker or spray paint, one for resisting arrest. in oakland, katie utehs, abc7 news. well, protesters also had last night in san francisco. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana was there and has the story. >> reporter: police estimate more than 2,000 people marched through the streets of san francisco. many in this crowd couldn't participate in other demonstrations through the day, so they braved the cold and rain to be present here. >> everyone's committed, even though it's uncomfortable. it's going to be a lot more uncomfortable with th government, the new government. a lot more uncomfortable than rain and wind. >> reporter: this is a coalition

of groups with varying causes, yielded in their opposition to the new president and his administration. >> so whether it's women's rights, gay rights, climate change, labor rights, almost every issue you can think of, for some reason, he's appointed cabinet ministers who are in opposition to those issues. >> reporter: along with some of the many progressive issues, there are also people here concerned about basic issues like science. one group is a team of post-doctoral researchers. >> they're really concerned that, you know, the work that they're contributing for american science is, you know, might not happen that much longer if the funding isn't there. >> reporter: many here say they've never felt so uncertain about their national government, and this day of protest may be the first of many to come. in san francisco, sergio quintana, abc7 news. three people were arrested in a protest in san jose. jason green with the bay area news group captured these pictures downtown. we have the routes mapped out for today's planned women's

marches in the bay area on our website, abc7news.com. so you can see if they will impact where you live. now to our storm watch coverage. in hollister, people who live near pacheco creek evacuated once again. the office of emergency services keeping a close eye on the forecast and the level of the creek this weekend. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has details. >> reporter: from sky7, you can see the homes on lovers lane underwater again. >> approximately 21 to 22 residences, 22 homes, that were directly affected by the flooding. those residents were evacuated. >> reporter: some people had to be rescued. the problem was twofold. rain sent the river over its banks and -- >> the original levee that did break was widened. it doubled, approximately, in size. >> reporter: a specialist with the company tacsat networks took this drone video and created 3d images that show the break. >> that levee has been

creased to about there. >> reporter: at the height of the evacuations, about 20 people took shelter at the veterans memorial building in hollister, including children. >> we brought some toys in and the kids are having a good time. but everybody's kind of quiet. >> reporter: the red cross will be providing cots for anyone who needs to spend the night. >> with the additional rain, it's almost impossible to predict how much further the affected area will grow to be. >> reporter: a mandatory evacuation order is still in place. in south bay, a mudslide took down two large redwood trees, knocking out power to some residents in the santa cruz mountains. happened just before 11:30 last night. one homeowner says he heard the trees cracking but thought it was thunder. when he went outside, he found the trees down in the road. luckily, nobody hurt there. pg&e is working to restore power to one customer in the area. and all lanes of highway 17 in los gatos back open this morning after this tree fell. some drivers were stuck on the freeway for hours as crews worked to clear the debris.

chp reopened the lanes just after 1:00 this morning. and get ready for more rain on the way. >> it's raining right now and we're sort of in between systems so this is a look at the san mateo bridge where you've had some heavy downpours the last hour. and more is on the way before a bit of a lull before the last and final system heads our way late tonight. so it's in the 40s and 50s, breezy and foggy in spots. we will get a tiny break to hopefully clean up. i'll detail the time line for you in just a few minutes. also next, coming out of the shadows. see where republicans gathered to celebrate the inauguration here in the bay area. and the legal battle over who actually owns the num for

well, a peaceful anti-trump demonstration brought thousands to san francisco's golden gate bridge yesterday morning. participants formed a human chain. organizers said it was to show that unity is the strongest bridge of all. abc7 news reporter ely is a shows us more from the event. >> reporter: as president donald trump was sworn into office, thousands in san francisco gathered on the golden gate bridge and linked arms. this was not called a protest, but instead, a show of unity. >> all the reasons why you're unhappy or all the reasons why you don't like the results, it wasn't about that. it was about goodness coming together. >> we're trying to show that

love trumps hates and we're stronger together and you don't get anything by violence. >> reporter: video from sky7 shows roughly 3500 people forming a human chain that nearly stretched the entire span of the bridge. >> love, love, love. >> reporter: the peaceful anti-trump event, called bridge together gaelden gate, was organized as a performance art piece. >> i hope that those of us with this kind of attitude can group together and make political change to make it a more inclusive country. >> reporter: you'll notice a lot of protesters wearing the color purple. they tell me this is symbolic of both party colors mixed together and stands for anti-bullying. zain grim is skeptical of the new president and his promise to make america great again. >> i think it's pretty great right now. and i think the people who were here at the demonstration also believe that it's a great place right now. and we don't need him. >> reporter: the event closed several parking lots, including the one by the welcome center and vista point.

they have since reopened. in san francisco, elissa harrington, abc7 news. port of oakland will resume normal operations today following a union protest against president trump that caused headaches yesterday. it began yesterday morning when numerous long shore workers didn't report for work. that caused one shipping terminal to close. vessel operations were also suspended for a time. truckers were backed up for hours. >> what hurt us is one of the terminals closed down. we got a lot of loads over there that we couldn't get done today. >> long shore union workers have been vocal opponents of president trump. wasn't all protests yesterday. abc7 news was in santa rosa at the flamingo hotel where republicans came to party. >> well, republicans are thrilled to be able to come to a room where they can all talk and not be abused. >> that defensive attitude from the winners was also present earlier yesterday. republicans at this inaugural watch party didn't want the media to come inside, saying they feared retaliation from

their neighbors. there was some minor confrontations between some uc berkeley students and the student republican club. hundreds quickly filled sprawl plaza for an anti-trump rally yesterday. abc news reporter lyanne melendez was there. >> hey hey, ohio, donald trump has got to go. >> reporter: berkeley high school students marched to cal in a show of solidarity with students already protesting. >> the only way we can get through these next four years is with support and love. >> reporter: didn't have the intensity of other uc berkeley demonstrations seen in previous years. still, students seemed to show the same commitment towards helping multicultural groups. >> and most importantly, it's to give them the strength and the encouragement and the support that's needed to go through the trump years. >> reporter: some faculty also came to support students. >> i'm very concerned about what i'm seeing, both in terms of the language, the visual symbolisms. >> we will bring back our

orders. >> reporter: those words heard through a bull horn were spoken by president trump and played over and over but uc berkeley college republicans. its members say they wanted other students to know they are here. at one point, both sides exchanged words. >> they're unhappy, but with the outcome of the election, but you know, here we are, january 20, new president, let's move forward. >> all of my friends have been personally attacked by his comments about women, about muslim americans, about immigrants and it's just disgusting to me that this hatred is allowed to be so open. i am not going to allow it to happen. >> no trump, no kkk, no fascist usa. >> reporter: students left the campus to march down telegraph avenue, keeping demonstrations nonconfrontational. at uc berkeley, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. massive women's marches are planned today across the bay area. download the abc7 news app and enable push alerts so that you'll know if these protests turn violent or impact traffic. good saturday morning to

you. we have several areas of downpours right now. here's live doppler 7, and as we take you into the north bay, you'll notice this yellow cell here right around highway 12. scattered showers down around 121, sears point, american canyon, and further into the east bay from berkeley, 580, wet weather for you over into oakland and just pushing out of san francisco right now, danville, it's wet for you and also over the higher elevations, walnut creek, showers ending. san ramon, 6680, looking pretty soggy and some rain/snow mix in the higher elevations. you can see another cell poised to move in along the coast here north of pacifica. as we get through the morning hours, we're going to see a bit of a lull in the activity before the next and final round of heavy rain comes our way. chain controls until the sierra nevada, mid and upper 20s now with the snow and we do have a winter storm warning until monday morning, 2 to 4 feet above 4,000 feet so you're not really going to get there at all so don't attempt it.

some very dangerous conditions through monday. we're talking anywhere to 3, maybe 5 and 6 feet in some of the higher elevations. so, temperatures in the 40s and 50s right now. we do have fog and a breezy atmosphere with a high surf warning. these waves are very dangerous from sonoma all the way down to monterey upwards of 30 feet in some spots right on through sunday. so, the rain, there's going to be a lull this afternoon. and then, for late tonight, into sunday, we are looking at a very high likelihood of ponding, flooding for the streams and creeks, power outages, and also around the russian river, the napa river, san anselmo creek, down around hollister, and those debris flows in burn scar areas. that's why the national weather receivers has issued a flash flood watch right on through sunday evening. the entire bay and an urban and small stream flood advisory could be posted as well. most of the heavy rain happens through the overnight hours. so, looking at the high wind watch for the entire area here

with southerly winds 40 to 50 miles an hour, but upwards of 50 to 60 miles an hour along the coast so it's a 2 on our storm impact scale. but this is a very strong system, so as we go through the afternoon, we get that nice break, but here comes the lighter rain. look what happens by 7:00. a band of heavier rain but it's really after 11:00 into the wee hours o. morning where we're going to see the winds in excess of 30 and 40 miles an hour so here's the front. look at the color coding here. pushes across the bay and then we get a nice lull into your sunday. so, here's the overnight hours, here's the front. the oranges and by about 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. it should be passing through the south bay. so there's our little bit of a break and then more showers, maybe a thunderstorm, once again, we know this routine, right? right on through your sunday. so, looking at rainfall amounts of about 1 3/4 inches, half moon bay and with highs today of scattered showers, mid and upper 50s, boy, it's been a long time until we see a success of some

dry days but they're going to be on the way. the accuweather 7 day forecast with a 1 today, a 2 tomorrow, heaviest rain and wind overnight and then if you download our app, you'll have those alerts which are multiple and probably some flood warnings as well. so this will be the last one. >> just got to get through until tuesday, right? and if you are traveling, just be careful and don't go to tahoe. put the trip off until next week. the snow will be there waiting for you. just ahead, what's that they say about imitation?

well, a bay area woman almost had her car taken away from her by authorities over a parking ticket. the ticket didn't even belong to her but everything she did to convince the citation company of that didn't really work so she contacted "7 on your side's" michael finney for help. >> reporter: susan cole loves her mini cooper. she even customized it to show off her british pride. the vanity plate on her car also fit the british theme. >> wee jam jar is british cockney for small car. >> reporter: the plate came off her previous car, which was also a mini cooper. she sold that in june. susan received this delinquency notice from the citation processing center for an unpaid parking ticket for that very same car she had already sold. >> i sold it june 23, and i got citations -- two citations sometime the end of july that

happened july 7. >> reporter: she had this release of liability which clearly showed the car had already been sold when the ticket was received. >> the citation company didn't seem to accept it because they sent me another citation with information about having problems with renewing my license and possibly impounding the car. >> reporter: in all, she said she received four notices of delinquency. the original $45 fine had doubled to $90. >> they just kept sending me a new citation. >> reporter: that's when she called "7 on your side" and we reached out to the dmv. the dmc contacted the stanford department of public safety, and the citation was cleared. we contacted the citation processing center in newport beach, but it didn't get back to us. we also asked stanford about whether or not it has any checks and balances on the processing center and how the center is pad. the university declined to answer. susan says no matter what

west of i can'tville and over through hercules, light rain, countriesington and berkeley over there orinda, highway 24, but heavier cell there. right north of hayward this morning. dub l dublin, you're getting some rain as well as south san francisco right on palmetto avenue there. looking at some pretty good downpours around san bruno and into mt. hamilton, a rain/snow mix so this is in between storms. we have some flooding occurring down by the levee break north of hollister, so this will likely be with us throughout the next day and a half as the next system queues up offshore and that's not until late tonight and we'll detail all the advisories in just a few minutes. well, as you know, the united states as a new president this morning. after a day of celebration and protest, america again looking at washington, d.c.. here's a live look from near the washington mall where hundreds of thousands are expected for today's women's march.

meanwhile, the new president will start to unravel the work of his predecessor. abc news reporter lana zak has more from washington. >> reporter: good morning, cornell. for the first time today, donald trump wakes up in the white house. and now with all the celebrations over the countdown clock is ticking on his first 100 days. ♪ i did it my way >> reporter: as frank sinatra's "my way" played, president donald trump danced with first lady melania. in the course of three inaugural balls -- >> we are going to do great things for our country. >> reporter: the nation's new first lady made her first remarks. >> i'm honored to be our first lady. we will fight. we will win. and we will make america great again. thank you. >> preserve, protect, and defend. >> reporter: a campaign promise now a presidential mission statement. >> this is for general mattis. >> reporter: one of the first acts as president, making

official defense secretary james mattis and homeland secretary john kelly. and while there at the resolute desk where president obama created obamacare, president trump began to repeal it. while in the streets, more than 200 protesters were arrested after violence broke out. today, women from across america plan to march. organizers hope this protest will send a different message. and it's right here on this street behind me where yesterday president trump marched in pageantry that today we expect more than 400,000 women to march in protest. reporting from washington, lana zak abc7 news. the national parks service twitter account has been suspended until further notice after apparently retweeting anti-trump posts. one retweet, which has since been taken down from their page, compares photos from president trump's inauguration to former president obama's back in 2009. nearly 2 million people attended

obama's while officials estimate 700,000 to 900,000 would attend mr. trump's. officials are investigating if the account was hacked or if the retweets were intentional. a person of interest in the shooting of a man at a protest at the university of washington in seattle last night has turned himself in. officers are questioning that person about the incident. the 32-year-old victim is in critical condition this morning. people gathered to protest against far right commenter milo yiannopoulos when the shooting happened. right now, up to 400,000 participants are in the nation's capital for the women's march on washington. peninsula congresswoman jackie spear will be taking part. here she is donning that pink knit hat that many participants will be wearing. similar marches will be taking place in more than 600 cities worldwide. a rally begins in washington, d.c., at 7:00 a.m. our time with

the march starting at 10:15. the white house has a new version of its website, including, we the people petitions. the first petition calls for president president trump to return his tax returns. there are nearly already more than 115,000 signatures. it needed 100,000 by february 19 for it to receive a white house review. well, this morning, former president obama and first lady michelle waking up in palm springs as private citizens. yesterday, their vacation was delayed a bit because the weather was so bad in the desert, the plane was diverted to land at march air reserve base in riverside. the obamas plan to spend a week in palm springs. this is an image former president obama looking through the helicopter window, no longer called marine 1. white house photographer pete sousa captured obama's final farewell to the white house. cecilia vega has more. >> after eight years in the

of building america. >> reporter: and a promise for the future. >> i promise you i'll be right there with you, all right? god bless you. thank you, everybody. yes, we did. yes, we can. god bless america. >> reporter: one more climb up those steps and then a final wave. cecilia vega, abc news, washington. breaking news out of mississippi this morning. at least four people have been killed after a large tornado touched down early this morning in the city of hattiesburg. the tornado left behind a trail of destroyed homes, collapsed buildings, downed power lines and residents trapped in their homes. the mayor has signed an emergency declaration for hattiesburg. the city's twitter account says firefighters are going door to door to rescue people. developing news out of italy this morning. at least 16 people were killed after a bus carrying hungarian

students slammed into a highway barrier and caught fire. the students, all teenagers, were returning to budapest from a school trip to france when the crash happened. officials say 39 people survived, 26 of them were injured, some seriously. one person has life-threatening condition. it is unclear what caused the bus to crash. a superior court judge has barred the operator of lefty o'douls in san francisco from removing any more memory hello bill yeah from the iconic hoffbrau. yesterday, the battle over who owns the name also continued in the courtroom. a trademark infringement lawsuit was filed against the landlord by the operator, contending he owns the name, lefty o'douls, but the landlord says he owns the name. still to come on abc7 mornings, amid all the celebration in washington, d.c., it was also moving day. from the moment the obamas walked out the door yesterday, a team began readying the white house for its new residents. and here's a live look from the golden gate bridge. yeah, it is rainy out there.

good morning to you. here's live doppler 7 and we've got scattered showers around the bay area. taking you into the north bay where santa rosa picking up some heavy to moderate rain there. sonoma, lighter rain. highway 1 by marinwood in san rafael, light showers, over towards concord and walnut creek, few scattered showers and this is a heavier cell right to the south of dublin around 580, so be careful out there in westward street level, south san francisco, just about to pull out of san bruno here and then further to the south, mt. hamilton, it's been wet and the higher elevations, it's chilly, that's why we have a dusting, a mix precip and as we get down to monterey, more scattered showers offshore so these will begin to be fewer and far between as we go through the afternoon, but we still are looking at chain controls in the sierra nevada with our winter storm warning right through monday morning, 2 to 4 feet above 4,000 feet for the west slopes and we will be looking at even greater amounts
