stphaoeufrplt steady rain is falling. good morning, everyone. i am carolyn tyler, and thank you for joining us on this sunday, january 22nd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist, lisa argen. >> the cold front pushing through the north bay right now and you can see the rain ending in parts of sonoma, but, boy, we have heavy downpours in the east bay between san leandro and oakland. and around fremont looking at wet weather with the gusty

winds, and redwood city and poor drainage here around san mateo county, and we are looking at urban and small stream flooding likely here, and so do be careful as we go through san jose, and we are looking at more heavy rain. and we have a flood warning until 7:45 this morning, and you can see for a portion of penngrove here and also around hollister look at a flood warning right on through theafter noon. so we're still looking at a winter storm warning in sierra, and the winds gusting from 25 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour along the coast. so the wind advisory, flooding going on and the rain ending this morning through 8:00. we will look for gusty winds throughout the mid morning showers, and we will track the rest of the wet weather for you in just a few minutes. rough surf churned up by the storm turned deadly for a

paraglider. he fell into the ocean just off of pacifica. >> reporter: he had been riding the air currents along the beach until he dropped into the surf. >> for a while, the surf was so high we couldn't get to him. >> complicating the effort to get to him was the beach accessory pair, and the concrete slabs that they were pouring had massive cracks making it unsafe to use. the currents dragged the man north to a narrow beef so bystanders tried to pull him out. >> they tried six or seven times

to grab him and the parachute, but the current kept snatching him right out of their hands. >> once we were able to get to him he was wrapped up in his lines, and weights, and we could not budge him. >> eventually they cut him away from the shaout, and he was pronounced dead on the scene. just before sunset, some people walked along the waterfront to take picture of the swells as they crashed into the pier. in pacifica, abc 7 news. across the bay area, the country, the world, hundreds of thousands joined together for the women's march. this massive crowd in san francisco from civic center, plaza, to justin herman plaza was among the demonstrations. >> passion and power filled the

streets of san francisco, as thousands marched for many reasons. >> the people united. >> some simply felt compelled to be here. >> it's a pivotal point in history and i want my girls to be part of what is going on and to realize they matter. >> many in the crowd feel the nation's new president is not inclusive for everybody, and things will change for the worse, and that's why nancy pelosi marched. >> we will fight if they try to overturn the affordable care act and immigrants rights and the women's right to choose, and so much is at stake. >> it was all about unifying in a time of uncertainty. >> so i am here to be with everybody else that wants to stand for human rights. >> human rights activist and folk singer, baez, shared a

similar sentiment. >> we need to be kind when kindness is out of the forefront. >> what is top of mind for so many here is the desire to show the next generation of women that their voices will be heard. >> we obviously support standing up for what you believe in, and i think this is that exactly. in the south bay, an estimated 25,000 people marched from city hall to plaza chavez, and sky 7 shows us the size of that crowd yesterday morning. >> it's not about trump, necessarily, and doesn't matter who won this needed to happen. >> standing up for the rights of women and insuring that we have affordable health care qualities, and people are committed and we are very united and it's an incredible concept. >> people cheered and held up signs, and some even cried. in oakland, an estimated 60,000

marchers took to the streets, and they spread throughout downtown. abc 7 news reporter has more. >> reporter: the smallest of marchers expressing mighty opinions. >> why are you marching? >> to respect women's rights. because i don't want him to make a war and i don't want him to make a wall. >> i'm marching because i want me and everybody else to be equal. >> some fear that's not the direction president donald trump is taking the country. >> i am terrified, for the first time in my life, about the leadership of this country. it isn't right. >> the women's march is a national and even international movement. >> there are millions of people marching not only in america but all overt world and at the end of the day, that's what it's all about, it's about us standing up for our rights.

>> crowds packed the streets of oakland. >> i could cry all day because i love women so much and am so happy to see everybody here, so it means hope. >> freeways and bart lines jammed as people tried to join the rally. >> it makes me personally feel like i can conquer anything. >> echoed by the massious. a rally at civic park yesterday morning that featured speakers and sign making. in santa rosa, a large crowd demonstrated downtown with signs that said we stand for women and tweet less, and the city had to

shut down some of the streets during the rally yesterday afternoon. and police estimated more than 5,000 showed up for the march, and they say everybody was peaceful, and well organized and there were no arrests. droves of protesters turned out in cities across the u.s. los angeles estimates 750,000 people participated in the women's march there. chicago, boston, atlanta, and just a few other cities showing solidarity to promote human rights and gender equality. the global impact was larger than organizers predicted and it's estimated at least 2.5 million people in nearly 700 cities worldwide took part in yesterday's demonstrations. it all started in washington, d.c., organizers estimate half a million people were there, and this world-wide event grew from one facebook post from a grandmother in hawaii, and

celebrities, politicians, including california's newest senator. >> part of what makes us great is we are a nation that was founded on certain ideals. founded on the ideals that were spoken in 1776, that we are all and should be treated as equals. >> a side by side comparison shows a larger crowd yesterday than at trump's inauguration on friday, and it should be noted that some streets around the national mall were closed on friday. we saw a lot of those women here marching in the rain. >> that's right. it held out for most of the day, but we're looking at the front pushing through the north bay, and still gusty winds and flooding issues down and around the san mateo region, and belmont and san carlos, and here's a look outside although you can't see much.

welcome back, everyone. 5:12 on this sunday morning. this is a live look from the emeriville camera, and you can see it's raining there. it's a stormy sunday in many places bay area wide today. lisa along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. sky 7 was above a devastating crash in santa clara county

yesterday, and vehicles collided on highway 152 east of gilroy, and that collision so forceful it ripped the car in half and started the fire in the cabin of the truck and at least one person died and investigators have not said what caused the crash. in alameda county, two cars crashed sending one into alameda creek. the driver of that car was killed. sky 7 was over niles canyon road in sunol where it happened before noon yesterday. rescuers had a difficult time locating the car, it started flowing downstream after entering the water. none of the people in the other car were seriously injured. san ramon police are looking for a man they say robbed a gas station last week, and the department posted this video on facebook, and they say this man robbed the chevron gas station near the intersection of san ramon boulevard and bullenger

county road, and the man told the clerk he had a weapon though none was seen and no word on how much money he got away with. president trump started his first day on the job mending fences and attacking a familiar foe. this is the same intelligence community he accused of leaking damaging information about him during his transition. yesterday mr. trump said he stands behind them and then he attacked the media, accusing the press of intentionally misstating crowd sizes at his inauguration. >> i get up this morning and i turn on one of the networks, and they show an empty field. i said, wait a minute, i made a speech, and i looked out, and the field was -- it looked like a million, million and a half people, and they showed a field where there was practically nobody standing there, and they said donald trump did not draw

well. i said, it was almost raining, and the rain should have scared them away and god looked down and said we are not going to let it rain on your speech. >> well, former cia director, outgoing director, john brennan, called trump's comment self agrandizment. the walk for life headed to justin harmon plaza, and hundreds believe abortion hurts women and want to see it come to an end across the country. >> we are definitely fueled by our faith and also fueled by our love by our neighbor, and we came out of here for our neighbor. >> life matters and it's important. >> people came from all over the u.s. to attend yesterday's rally. yesterday's women marches in the bay area not only affected traffic, and the demonstrations

affected businesses, too. the usually bustling strip of merchandisers along berkeley was unusually quiet for a saturday. >> a lot of customers that are politically involved and they are doing the march and it's taking business away from 4th street in general. i am really proud for these women and it's time to get politically involved, and it's just that now is the time. >> some shops in oakland either closed early or did not open at all because of the women's march there. the office of emergency services is keeping a close eye on the creek in hollister. video from sky 7 yesterday shows the flooding that forced dozens of nearby residents to evacuate again on friday. firefighters rescued nearly two dozen people from flooded homes and just about everybody is back in their homes this morning, and officials say the problem is two-fold, and all the rain

sending the river over its banks and the original levee that broke earlier this month widened to nearly double its original size. and in the sierra the latest storm bringing a look at avalanche danger, there's a lane closed earlier last night and traffic creeping through. chains are required east of plaster county to the nevada state line and are required on highway 50 from west of meyers, and placer county wants people to voluntary evacuate because of the high avalanche risk through tomorrow. good morning, everyone. we are starting with the heaviest rain, and doppler 7 looking at redwood city around highway 82 and 280. you have good downpours around palo alto, and further south

around boulder creek and scott's valley, and it's coming down hard. over to the east in union city, 880 in hayward and fremont, looking at good downpours and up towards ma rauga and 680. and then it latents up around vallejo and westward around marin county, and the front is going through sonoma, and they have flood warnings throughout the morning hours due to the excessive runoff, so the good news is that the first part of the front is pushing through the north bay and we will begin to see the rain temporarily come to an end. take a look at this satellite picture. there's the area of cold front already pushing through and the winds will dial back, but did you see that? a lightning strike. that's what we are going to get into this afternoon. heavy downpours with thunderstorms and small hail possible. still a thunderstorm warning, so

nothing is changing here. still the amounts are excessive in terms of snow, and we already had a couple feet, an additional two feet likely, and temperatures this morning in the 50s, and it's a mild atmosphere, and still ahead of the front for most of you, and the winds are gusting to 43 miles per hour in oakland, and look at mountain view, 30, and san jose, 35 miles per hour. lighter winds to the north and a high surf advisory until 3:00 tuesday. the winds have calmed down a bit but the surf remains high, and swells 4 to 17 feet. a flash flood watch through the afternoon for ponding, and rapid rise on the creeks and streams, and so far doing good and we have not seen a significant flooding around the bay, and still have heavy downpours out there for most of you, and we are looking at still the concerns for the trees down and perhaps some of that low-lying

flooding. as we go through the forecast hour by hour, that's the front, and by 8:00 it pushes through. is there a break? not for all of you, because by 9:00, 10:00, the rain comes back, and by 2:00, another line of some pretty heavy rain pushes through. this is what could contain the hail, heavy downpours and the thunderstorms and maybe even lightning, and by 4:00, we're still looking at rainfall. we get a few breaks by late in the day, and we're looking at the gusty winds really going with the front throughout the morning hours, and then they will dial back. that's the one good piece of news is that we are looking at not only the winds dialing back, but the rain temporarily. so we add up this morning's rain and we go through the rest of today and we an inch and a third down in the south bay. you want to know when you can put the umbrella away? not tomorrow. tomorrow's a active day, but the

she books connecting flights with at least 12 hours between them. a new study finds gun violence in pg-13 movies has more than doubled since 1985. a pg-13 rating stands for parents strongly caution, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13, but according to the study movies targeting america's youth has more gun violence than r-rated films, and parents are urged to talk with their kids about the violence they see on the screen. and then the going out of business party on the last day of operations. it's closing its doors for good after dealing with public complaints including disorderly conduct and an assault of a police officer, and on facebook the owners say they are

we are in for a wet and windy sunday. the storm is rolling through the bay area, and this is what it looked like in san jose earlier this morning. what areas will get the most rain today?

welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half hour with a look at the weather with meteorologist, lisa argen. >> doppler 7 showing the heaviest rain on the peninsula and the east bay and south bay and the cold front is pushing through the north bay, and we show you as we go in closer how rainy it is right here, around hayward, and highway 84, and these downpours are coming down pretty good with localized ponding and flooding on the roadway, and the summit, morgan hill looking for heavy rain, and it extends southward through gilr gilroy, and over into the east bay from danville to san ramon, it's very rainy. and mill valley, san francisco, looking at a little lighter return, and some scattered showers as the winds are backing off as the front pushes through, but it's not through the entire bay area, and you can see where the winds gust in oakland to san

jose, and that's where we have the downpours and still the storm pounding the bay area. on our storm impact scale, it's a 2. the rain ends through 8:00 and then heavy downpours with a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. carolyn? >> thank you. as we showed you at the top of the hour, hundreds of thousands of people took over washington, d.c. and cities all over the world, including several here in the bay area. the marchers and demonstrations were aimed at showing donald trump they are watching and won't be silent. abc news reporter, stephanie ramos, joins us live from washington with more. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: carolyn, good morning. so many people descended here on d.c. for the women's march, and the crowd too big to walk to the white house, which is less than a mile from here, but a lot of the marchers saying they wanted to send a massive message to the current administration that they

are not going to be silent. >> this is what democracy looks like. >> reporter: a battle cry heard from hundreds of thousands of people. >> we will resist any e sexist policies that come our way. >> a lot of people have anguish and worry about what is going to happen. >> women, men and children taking to the streets from coast-to-coast. >> we can whimper and wine or we can fight back. me, i'm here to fight back. >> reporter: boston, san francisco, and even as far as london and around the world, and that emotion felt by celebrities, and all standing up for civil rights and human rights. >> we march today for the moral core of this nation, against which our new president is waging a war.

>> and president trump was able to stay away from the march, and sean spicer disputing crowd size on inauguration day. >> photographs of the inaugural proceedings were framed in a way to minimize the enormous support that it gathered on the national mall. >> all while marchers on president trump's first day in office vow to remain united for the next four years. outside of the picture, the numbers don't lie. d.c. and metra staff says close to half a million people hopped on a train to head to the capital and the crowds topping the numbers of those on inauguration day, and the marchers say this was just the beginning. >> thank you, stephanie. president trump took to twitter in the past hour to respond to the women's marches, and he tweeted watched protest

yesterday but was under the impression that we just had an election. why didn't these people vote? celebs hurt cause badly. yesterday mr. trump was busy on his first full day in the white house? he attended a prayer service at washington national cathedral in the morning before paying a visit to the cia. reporter jim acosta shows he offered an olive branch to the intelligence community. >> it was down to business for president trump as he faced the same intelligence community he accused of leaking damaging information about him. >> there's nobody that feels stronger about the intelligence community and the cia than donald trump. >> instead of focusing on the previous attacks by trump, but instead he took swipes at the news media. >> we had a massive field of people.

packers and falcons and patriots and steelers today in the championships, and we will have that here on abc 7, and have a great day. good morning to you. we have a flash flood watch throughout the afternoon, but you want the rain to end a little bit, and it will for just a little bit. here's live doppler 7. you can see the cold front pushing through the north bay and that's where the end is raining and the wind is lightening up. the rain is coming down good. this is over in pleasanton union city in fremont. san jose sunnyvale and pal alto, and along the peninsula things are lightening up through san carlos and san mateo and belmont, and still looking at good rain around stanford. and it's wet and it's windy, and in the north bay things are really beginning to quiet down.

the winds are dialing back and the rain is lightening up, and for the next couple hours, we will notice things are changing a bit as a cold front is pushing through the bay area, and behind it is cold and unstable air, and a classic feature that will give a threat of thunderstorms today and reinvigorate that unstable atmosphe atmosphere, and more heavy downpours and a chance of thunderstorms. with the winter storm warning going through 4:00 tomorrow, we're still looking at the snow accumulating in feet, anywhere from one to two additional feet through south lake, and incline could pick up another 10 inches and another 15 inches around blue canyon. we are looking at still some mild air out there, and as we go through the rest of the day the winds are going to really dial back, and from the north bay you will notice they are light but gusty into the east bay and south bay. a high surf advisory has been replaced with the warning, and

yesterday the waves were up to 30 and 40 feet in spots, and the swells are at 14 to 17 feet, so still dangerous and the possibility of flooding and ponding on the roadways, and drainage is poor in many spots around the area, and winds kick up through 10:00 and then this should be lifted. look what is ahead for the rest of the afternoon. the front moves through in the next couple of hours, and then a slight breakthrough 8:00, and then as we get into the afternoon, and this is what could provide the hail and the downpours and the lightning and some very gusty winds here right on through the afternoon. even though the front moves through, we have a unstable environment. by 11:00, a few spotty showers. high temperatures today in the mid and upper 50s with the heavy downpours, and then tomorrow morning notice we are not out of the woods yet, we still have the area of low pressure offshore, and then by monday morning, your
