a good wednesday morning to you all. we begin with president trump taking the first step toward building a mexican border wall. >> today the president is visiting the homeland security department where he's expected to take executive actions from funding that wall to a temporary ban on immigration from certain muslim majority countries. >> this comes after he moved to resume construction on two controversial pipelines. abc's stephanie ramos has the latest from washington. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. yeah, president trump is on a roll seeping executive actions and he's moving toward more policy changes today. today, president trump plans to crack down on immigration. >> we will build a great wall along the southern border. >> reporter: it's a familiar campaign promise and tweet. abc news has learned that trump's executive actions will move to suspend immigration from many middle eastern countries and he's also expected to direct

funds for the construction of a wall along the southern u.s./mexico border. california governor jerry brown promising to defend his state's laws on immigration and fight any moves by the trump administration. >> we will defend everybody, every man, woman and child who's come here for a better life and has contributed to the well-being of our state. >> reporter: days into his presidency, mr. trump whipping out the pen again to sign a few different directives. hours after approving the controversial keystone and dakotas pipeline project, protesters showed up outside the white house. >> we will build our own pipeline. we will build our own pipes like we used to in the old days. >> reporter: the president coming under fire for sticking with his comments that 3 million to 5 million voted illegally in the election making him lose out on the popular vote to hillary clinton. >> the president does believe that. he has stated that before. i think he stated his concerns of voter fraud. >> reporter: but there is no

proof and even elected republicans don't buy it. >> i've seen no evidence to that effect. >> reporter: the white house does not plan on investigating the alleged fraud. even trump's lawyers seem to contradict the voter fraud claims. in court filings they objected to a post-election recount in michigan writing, all available evidence suggests the election was not tainted by fraud or mistake. kendis, diane, back over to you. >> head scratcher. stephanie, thanks. the leading contender has emerged to fill the supreme court seat. >> he is judge neal gorsuch currently sitting on the 10th circuit court of appeals. the colorado native is 49 years old which would make him the youngest nominee for the high court in about 25 years. it is expected as early as next week. they're hoping a vote will come soon on tom price. democrats pushed price on how the republicans will replace

obamacare. price said the goal is affordable health care that's accessible to every american, but he didn't provide details. price was also asked about the president's comment that a plan would come after his confirmation. >> will you comment that no one will be worse off. >> what i commit to, senator is working with you and every single member of congress to make certain we have the highest quality health care and that every single american has access to affordable coverage. >> that's not what i asked. >> it got heated. congressman price faced questions about his fa pharmaceutical stocks. mick mulvaney is taking heat over a financial problem he called a mistake. there are calls for him to now be disqualified because he failed to pay more than $15,000 in payroll taxes for a baby-sitter. the south carolina congressman says he discovered the problem while preparing for his hearings and he has since paid those taxes. president trump is railing

against the soaring crime rate in chicago after being criticized by the city's mayor for debating the crowd size at his inauguration. >> the president threatened to send in the feds if chicago doesn't fix the horrible carnage going on. mayor rahm emanuel and the chicago police department have expressed the willingness to work with federal departments. and abc's david muir will have the first interview with donald trump since being sworn in. a one-hour special tonight 10:00 p.m. eastern, 9:00 central. to the weather now and a powerful storm finally moving off the east coast. radar shows just a few showers over new england now. that come -- the recovery is what we're dealing with. a 60-foot tree will have to be removed from this house. someone was asleep in that house at the time but luckily managed to escape without injury. meanwhile, a snow alert in effect in the plains states, plows were on the streets of sioux falls, south dakota and the radar also shows parts of iowa and minnesota facing some

snow. and this is the same storm that brought some heavy rain to california. it is now expected to bring a foot of snow in some places. still ahead, legal cargo from cuba arriving in the u.s. for the first time in 50 years, what was in that first shipment. a missing mom and two kid, there's a desperate search for the family that began after a fire destroyed their home. plus, the dramatic moment a skier loses control and goes over a cliff. what happened next.

an officer and the driver both suffered minor injuries in that crash. the guy in the truck was then arrested for allegedly driving while on heroin. another piece of impact video here. this skier's run down the mountain was going so well, it was actually beautiful. great powder, enjoying all that fresh powder and then, yeah, he flew off the cliff. wait for it. impact. thankfully he reports he didn't even have a bruise but he says he spent five hours searching for his lost ski. eventually he found it and he skied off the mountain. >> that's the downside of being in all that powder. right? >> yeah. >> it doesn't hurt when you fall, but it takes assemble the yard sale afterwards. new details on the water crisis in flint michigan. the city's water no longer has lead levels that exceed federal limit, but residents are still being warned not to drink it. that's because lead tainted pipes still need to be replaced which could take up to a year. the crisis in flint has been tied to lead poisoning in children and the death of 12 people from legionnaires' disease. minnesota governor mark dayton says he plans to finish

out the final two years of his term despite a cancer diagnosis. dayton told reporters he's battling prostate cancer just hours after collapsing during a televised speech to lawmakers there. now, doctors say his collapse wasn't actually related to the cancer diagnosis. dayton will be advised on a cancer treatment plan next week. and "dancing with the stars" co-host erin andrews has revealed a battle with cervical cancer. in an interview with "sports illustrated," the nfl sideline reporter says she was diagnosed last summer. andrews then had surgery and had to miss two tapings of "dancing with the stars" but she did not miss a single football game. andrews said during her ordeal, quote, sports were my escape and she said she told the doctor, i am not missing the super bowl. >> it's important and it is on fox for them. so, the first legal shipment of goods from cuba to the u.s. in five decades has arrived at a south florida port. the shipment was a special kind of charcoal known to be especially clean for burning. it is used in pizza and bread

a dramatic water rescue in floodwaters around boston. a public works employee carried the driver of that school van to rescue, to safety. the water was deep enough that it poured into the van when the woman tried to open the doors. roads could still be slippery in new england today. heavy snow will be a commuting challenge from the dakotas all the way to wisconsin. >> should be a relatively good day to fly except in the delta hub of minneapolis. police in virginia beach believe a mother and her two children who went missing last week are in danger. >> 29-year-old monica lamping, her 7-year-old son and 9-month-old daughter haven't been seen since saturday. that night she went on a blind date with a man known only as chad. the next day her house caught fire even though though one was home and lamping's mother now says she wants answers. >> nobody ever thinks they're going to be sitting in this spot and nobody ever wants to be.

we just want those babies found and we want her found. >> such a sad story. a missing and endangered alert has been issued for her and her children. police say they have images of a car bearing her license plate in norfolk early sunday morning. a woman who recently moved from colorado to california has been reported missing in los angeles. her roommate says 28-year-old laura lynn stacy hasn't been seen since sunday. her 2005 acura also went missing. police say a car matching that was found in a remote desert area last night. an arizona man breaking his silence about the difficult moment when he killed a driver who was attacking a state trooper at the time. thomas yoxall got emotional at times as he spoke to reporters. his voice actually shaking a little bit, his eyes filling with tears. he said he had little time to think when he came upon the

wounded trooper being attacked. his slhead being slammed into t pavement. >> to me there was no choice or opportunity to think about it within my mind rationally. i responded the only way i know how to respond and that's to act. and i may have acted heroically but i don't consider myself a hero at all. >> well, he says the shooting brought up some difficult emotions but said he would take the same action in the future. the trooper is still recovering from his injuries. and look at this frightening crash. this would be a passenger train with more than 80 people on board. basically cutting a fedex truck in half. it happened over the weekend in north salt lake city, utah, amazingly no injuries and just getting the video now. ice and snow caused the railroad crossing gates to malfunction. the search is on for a missing red panda at the zoo in norfolk, virginia. zookeepers realized sunny wasn't in her enclosure on tuesday morning. they have been using geothermal

comes up, they're going to send more resources out here on the bay. check out this picture of the missing man. hispan he is described as a 32-year-old san jose resident. a call came in just after 4:30 yesterday. two people were in the water. men low fire found one man. he said he looked back and saw the kayak up side down and no sign of his friend. more than a dozen rescue boats and two helicopters were sent out here. drones were used to search the shoreline. we've been in contact with his girlfriend and she say says he n incredible man and she's asking for prayers. it shows the temperature here at 37 degrees. obviously very cold here. very cold in the bay. time is a major factor in this search. reporting live, matt keller abc7 news. president trump h
