28th time seeing each other on saturday but on this thursday we say good morning. another round of sweeping immigration changes expected from president trump after he signed off on his signature promise, to build a border wall. >> the president talked about his immigration policies in a one-on-one with abc's david muir. his first network interview since taking office. the newly signed executive orders clear the way for construction to begin on the wall almost immediately. increase border patrol forces and penalize sanctuary cities. president trump has a full day heading to philly to address a gathering of republican lawmakers before returning to washington where he's expected to sign another executive order. that one limiting u.s. refugees. >> that was one of many topics the president covered in his interview with david but also offered a bit of reassurance to undocked immigrants who came to the country as children. >> are you going to direct u.s. funds to pay for this wall? will american taxpayers pay for

the wall. >> ultimately it will come out of what's happening with mexico. we'll start those negotiations relatively soon and we will be in a form reimbursed by mexico. >> they'll pay us back. >> absolutely, 100%. >> when does construction begin. >> as soon as we can. >> i want to ask about undocumented immigrants here. they're protected as so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers. the children brought here by their parents. should they be worried they could be deported? anything you can say to assure them right now they'll be allowed to stay. >> they shouldn't be worried. they are here illegally. they shouldn't be worried. i do have a big heart. we'll take care of everybody and have a strong border and a solid border. >> mr. president, you told me during one of the debates you would bring back waterboarding and a hell of a lot worse. >> i want to keep our country safe. i want to keep our country safe. >> what does that mean. >> when they're chopping off the heads of our people and other people and chopping off the heads of people because they

happy. >> mexico's president is now responding to the executive action on the border wall. he took to twitter last night declaring again that mexico will not pay for any wall. he said he rejects the u.s. decision and sources say he's now considering canceling a white house meeting with president trump set for next week. mayors of sanctuary cities say they will not be bullied by the trump administration over a threat to pull funding and continue to refrain from holding undocumented immigrants beyond their jail terps or denying bond at the request of federal authorities. boston's city hall was covered in red, white and blue as a same boll that all are welcome. >> all that said in addition to that executive order restricting refugees the president is also expected to sign one focusing on america's role in the united nations. >> abc's stephanie ramos is live in washington with the details on both of those policies. good morning. >> reporter: diane, kendis, good morning. the president confirms he is about to sign an executive action suspending some immigration into the u.s. now, this would be a temporary

ban from certain countries, no word on what countries it will include but trump has been considered a suspension of refugees from iraq, iran, libya, somalia, sudan, syria and yemen. during his interview with david, trump says it will not be a muslim ban. >> it's countries that people are going to come in and cause us tremendous problems. our country has enough problems without allowing people to come in who in many cases or in some cases are looking to do tremendous destruction. >> reporter: the other executive action on the table would drastically reduce america's role in the united nations. a report says there will be at least a 40% decrease in funding from the u.s. toward international organizations. the president has been critical of the u.n. in december calling it a, quote, club for people to have a good time. this all comes as the gop gathers in philadelphia for the annual congressional retreat.

lawmakers say the top agenda items are repealing obamacare and reworking the tax code. protests are already under way in the city. trump arrive there is around noon. british prime minister theresa may will also speak at the retreat today. she'll then head to washington where she'll be the first world leader to meet with the president tomorrow. kendis, diane. >> of course, the other big question, who will the president name to the supreme court? he now says he will release that name next week. so looking forward to that. stephanie ramos live from washington. stephanie, thanks. now to the ongoing gun violence in chicago. last night six people including a 12-year-old were injured in a shooting. >> witnesses said the gunfire happened at a memorial for another victim of violence and claimed that was in retailation for yet another shooting. on tuesday the president tweeted about what he called chicago's horrible carnage. david asked him about that. >> if they are unable to fix it, that's when -- >> so far they have -- it's been going on for years and i wasn't

president. what's going on? so, all i'm saying is to the mayor who came up to my office recently, i say, you have to smarten up and you have to toughen up. >> and addressing a tweet that the president sent about sending the feds to chicago, sean spicer, the press secretary, says the president was referring to providing federal resources to chicago's struggling law enforcement but didn't provide specifics. >> we'll have much more of david's interview including what was in that letter left by president obama on his final day in office. that's a little later on this half hour. also this morning, we are celebrating the life and the legacy of mary tyler moore who passed away after a long illness. >> she is remembered for her pioneering tv roles. first as laura petrie, the wife of an ad man played by dick van dyke and her emmy winning character on the "the mary tyler moore show" that inspired a generation of singing working women. >> the opening sequence of that show is now considered one of the greatest moments in

television history, that famous toss of the cap was actually a last-minute suggestion from the director as mary tyler moore explained to diane sawyer in 2002. >> so whose idea was it to walk out in the middle of an intersection and do that? >> well, there was a man who was directing the opening titles and it was so cold, it was in the middle of january here. it was so cold that lips weren't moving, you couldn't form words and he said, you know what would be a good idea, mary, go out in the middle of the intersection and take that tam off and throw it in the air. it was so cold i couldn't protest. the words weren't forming so i did as i was told. >> probably happy about that. and that hat was a gift from a family member that was actually her hat and in her personal life mary tyler moore was a passionate advocate for juvenile diabetes and protecting animal rights. no word yet on funeral plans but we'll have more later on in this half hour. >> a memorial statue marking that signature move in minneapolis for her. still ahead the big change

another blast of winter weather for much of the midwest with more snowfall for the upper midwest and great lakes region. at times blowing and drifting snow may lead to whiteouts and that snow will likely be followed by much colder temperatures. and breaking overnight, crews are battling a massive fire at an unfinished apartment complex near seattle. at least two firefighters have been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and residents in nearby buildings are being evacuated. they're being urged to avoid

that area and the cause is still unknown. the dow opens above 20,000 for the first time after reaching a market milestone. that record fueled by strong earnings reports and optimism over president donald trump's pro-business policies. the dow jumped 156 points and opens today, 20,068. the s&p 500 and the nasdaq joined the dow in closing at all-time highs. a mumps outbreak in spokane, washington, now has spread to 90 people. health officials say at least 50 of those infected were actually vaccinated for the mumps. hundreds of students who have not been vaccinated are now advised to stay home or ordered to stay home, that is, as students are now being urged to get their vaccinations as well. health officials expect the number of cases to spread in the coming days. facebook is changing its trending topics feature in an effort to fight fake news stories. among the changes all users will see the same topics instead of those personalized by their behavior. and to keep fake news from trending, an article's headline and publisher will be shown. when we come back, the woman missing for days has been found

that struck you most? >> there were numerous lines, so well written, so thoughtful, so thoughtful. and in the drawer, you know, put in the drawer, which is accustomed, but i doubt too many of them were written in this manner. in fact, i called him and thanked him for the thought that was put into that letter. >> i have to say i have looked at a lot of those presidential letters that they have left for the next president. >> right. >> that one looks a lot longer than the ones that i have seen. >> it was long. it was complex. it was thoughtful, and it took time to do it, and i appreciated it, and i called him and thanked him. >> was there something he said in that letter that surprised you? >> well, i think nothing that surprised me, but it was stated beautifully but that i'm representing a lot of people, and i'm carrying on a very important tradition and just do a great job. he wants me to do a great job.

>> and when trump was asked what keeps him up at night, he said, it is terrorism and the economy. an update on a story we told you about yesterday around this time. a woman who had been missing in los angeles has been found alive. 28-year-old laura lynne stacy hadn't been seen since sunday. her phone was found about 30 miles away monday morning, and her car was located later in a remote desert area. she was found by police walking on the side of freeway. so far no word on the reason for her disappearance. in tennis now the williams sisters are heading to their ninth head-to-head grand slam final. 36-year-old venus earned her spot in saturday's australian open title match by beating another american. and look at the excitement on her face. then serena williams set up the all williams affair with a dominating victory that just took 50 minutes. serena has beaten her older sister in six of their eight previous grand slams. it'll be a fun day in australia for the americans. >> if you're their parents, who do you root for?
