in the santa cruz mountains, a bank robbery suspect who shot at police and broke into a woman's home last night is now on the run. police say residents need to know that he could be armed and dangerous. good morning to you, i'm reggie aqui. >> i'm natasha zouves. abc7 news reporter matt keller has been tracking this search all morning long. he is live for us in santa clara county. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. here's some advice for deputies for residents liing here in the santa cruz mountains. stay indoors, lock your doors, turn on all your exterior lights and if you see something suspicious, call 911. here's the latest update from deputies that came just before 2:00 a.m. it is a tweet. let me tell you what it says. suspect still at large. seen in the area of aldercroft heights and locust drive. officers were in the santa cruz mountains with their guns out looking for the suspect. it all started yesterday morning around 10:00 when a man robbed a

bank of america in scotts valley. police chased him on highway 17 when he crashed near redwood estates. a scotts valley police officer fired at the suspect. the highway was shut down and the massive man hunt began. just after 10:00 last night, they got a call from a woman on weaver road saying a man armed with a knife was inside her home and had taken off in her van. >> he fled the area, democrats responded upon receiving the 911 call. and he fled from the van and is currently on foot. where an active search is going on to locate the suspect. . looks like we just lost audio, but let's get over to mike nicco for a check of the forecast. >> hi, everybody. here's the big story weather-wise. we've got high clouds. that's it. look at that. live doppler 7 is quiet this morning, other than the cloud layer that i overlaid on top of it.

take a look from the roof camera, you can see the beautiful lights all the way to the bay bridge. there's an issue. i had to scrape some ice this morning, you may have to also. 45 here in san francisco. total sunshine, a nice day to sit outside at lunch. there won't be quite a breeze and if you're in the sun, that 51 to 55 will feel warmer than that. upper 50s at 4:00 and then 42 to 49 at 7:00. we're going to take a look at some spring-like temperatures coming our way next. here's alexis. good morning, mike, and yeah, not too much happening in the traffic center this morning either which is of course the way we like it. we do have a backup through the bay bridge toll plaza, but no different than any other day when we have had those metering lights on since about 5:27 this morning so one of our few areas that really isn't friday light. and a quick check of drive times. great through the walnut creek area, southbound 680 and then if you're continuing to highway 13 just nine minutes. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, just 33 minutes, you're in the yellow. we will certainly take it. closer look at the south bay coming up. and as alexis just

mentioned, 580 is rolling again after a big rig fire left a headaches for almost 11 hours. abc7 news was there when caltrans crews removed the charred debris from the freeway just a short time ago. the truck caught fire around 6:30 last night after a crash, then reignited several hours later. the back of the truck was filled with dhl mail and packages. it's not clear what happened to the mail that was damaged. president trump has some choice words for people who sneak into the u.s. intending to bring harm. mr. trump was responding to a question about border security on a national interview show. the president said his administration will have extreme vetting for people coming to the u.s. he didn't elaborate on what that would look like. the host then compared extremists to nazis and the president responded like this. >> they had evil with uniforms on. >> that's true. this is different. >> we have evil that lurks around the corner without thedown foorms. ours is harder because the people that we're going against, they don't wear uniforms.

they're sneaky, dirty rats. at 9:00 this morning our time, president trump will meet with british prime minister theresa may. she becomes the first world leader to visit the white house since the inauguration. after that, the two will hold a joint news conference that's expected to begin at 10:00 a.m. our time. when it starts, abc news will bring it to you live and we will stream it for you as well when our i don't go. the trump administration is canceling any remaining advertising urging people to sign up for obamacare in the final days of the sign-up period and this could have an impact since a lot of people wait until the final days so sign up. the health and human services department said et spend more than $60 million this year to support open enrollment. hhs says the pullback is an effort to cut costs. trump hotels wants to expand to san francisco. we'll wait and see if this actually makes it through what can be a pretty daunting city approval process. also, as you know, the president has been threatening to deny

funding to san francisco because of its sanctuary city status and all of this has some city supervisors already angry over anything that comes up trump. mr. trump has a business with a san francisco footprint already, the company owns part of 555 california, which is formally known as the bank of america center. supporters of california becoming a separate nation can start collecting silgt these need to get cal exit on the ballot. the proposal would repeal part of the state constitution that declares california an inseparable part of the u.s. more than 585,000 voter signatures need to be collected by july 25 to get the initiative on the november 2018 ballot. if it passes, there would be a statewide election in 2019 for voters to decide if they want california to be its own country. niles canyon road between fremont and sunol is going to be closed again tomorrow because crews plan to resume their search for jayda jenkins. she's a missing tracy teenager whose car crashed into alameda

creek on saturday. investigators say she may have been able to get out of that car. they found personal belongings, including clothing, that had been washed downstream. that section of niles canyon road is going to be closed tomorrow from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 680, 238, and mission boulevard are suggested alternative routes. san francisco is trying a new tactic now to cut down on all those car break ins. new signs are going up in high traffic tourist areas like this one. to remind people to remove valuables and lock their cars. the city has installed 30 so far. the hope is that the signs will prevent a known san francisco problem. baseball season isn't too far off. and the as have their chance to meet some of their fans. >> absolutely. tomorrow, the as will host their annual fan fest. fans can get autographs, snap those photos with the players, and the as world series trophies. there will also be a kids

it's 6 sln 15 now. in texas, criminal charges against a mom and her two teen daughters are being troped. this after pretty stunning video from the arresting officer's body cam. the mom called for police to report her neighbor choked her 8-year-old son after catching himlessering. this is the response from the

arriving officer. >> why don't you teach your son not to litter. >> it doesn't matter if he did or didn't. >> why not? >> because it don't. it don't. what you mean? >> this is what happens next. her daughter tries to intervene and then the officer is seen throwing both of them to the ground. police dropped the charges against this family already, but their lawyers say the family wants the officer fired. the officer is still undergoing additional training right now. he was disciplined for ten days. all right now to an issue our whole news room was talking about this morning. high heels in the workplace. a woman was sent home without pay for not wearing heels in her office. >> unbelievable. nicola thorp says she was shocked. she was told to go home after showing up to her new job at a global accounting firm in london because she went to work, how dare her, without a minimum 2 inch heel. >> i was there for all of about ten minutes, when a male colleague said, well, he's wearing flat shoes.

the toll plaza but once you make your way into san francisco, we are looking average there. no issues to report. drive times looking good here too. southbound 101, san francisco to sfo, if you've got a flight this morning, just ten minutes. northbound 880, another 14 for you and northbound 101, also in the green at about 12 minutes. we will take it. mike nicco, i'm thinking maybe some folks are seeing your forecast and playing hooky today. yes, putting on the running shoes, heading out, doing hiking today, out on the water. you'll have not only today but the next several days as the storm track, you can see that bright white cloudiness is going to head north this weekend, leaving us with look at this gorgeous sunrise developing over san jose and the south bay right now. it's about 34 degrees. sunny and nearly seasonal highs today, building warmth,ing the peak monday with san jose one of those areas nearing 70 degrees. cooler and wet, yeah, winter returns wednesday, thursday, and friday.

today, 59 in palo alto is our warm spot. we'll have 56 in antioch, livermore, concord, and san francisco for our cool spots so a narrow range once again. tonight, temperatures in the low to mid 30s inland, more tule fog, more frost, more potential for black ice, mid 30s to low 40s around the bay shore and out to the coast. we do have a storm coming in, light one for wednesday and thursday on our storm impact scale. rainfall estimates about 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches, breezy conditions but not expecting much damage. until that rolls in up in the sierra, look at that, temperatures not 40s and 50s sunday, monday, tuesday, and then rain and snow wednesday and thursday. back here at home, 60s still around the bay saturday, everybody sunday and then look at that monday, 62 to 68, cooler conditions begin tuesday and then wednesday and thursday, that's when you need to get the umbrella ready. so with all that snow up in the sierra, excited to bring alexis back in with the toyota tahoe report. yeah, and you know what, mike, we still have our ridiculous base totals too. and we've got some pretty decent driving conditions. so, especially if you're heading up right now, this early on

this fire broke out on the roof of a 27-story hotel in florida overnight. flames were seeing coming out of the top of tampa bay marriott. a pile of debris left by workers just ignited. hotel employees tried using fire extinguishers but it didn't work. fortunately no one hurt here but

scary for hotel guests who evacuated. they were allowed back in after an hour and a half. more problems for airbnb in san francisco. according to socket site.com, complaints related to airbnb more than doubled last year. in fact, more than 600 complaints were related to illegal short-term rentals were filed with the city. that's up from 250 the previous year and just 150 in 2014. all right, it is time to ask finney and this morning, caitlyn from walnut creek has a question about prom dresses. >> she spoke to us. eastbound side back open. that westbound side remains closed. chp on the scene there in atherton helping with some of that traffic control and i am seeing some slight delays approaching that. i know it's tough on those surface streets. possibly as soon as tomorrow, they'll be able to get that back open. depends on the water levels and they are pumping 24/7. we will take a look at the central valley commute coming up. in the santa cruz mountains, a massive man hunt continues for a bank robber who's been on the run since yesterday morning. police say a man robbed the bank of america in scotts valley. officers chased him on highway 17 until he crashed his car near redwood estates. an officer fired at the suspect. it is not known if he was hit but he did get away. police say a woman called 911 last night reporting a man with a knife had broken into her home and stole her van and some clothes. officers say it is highly likely that is the same man and he is considered armed and dangerous. the search has lasted through the night. so far, air forcofficers have n him.

good news if you take 580 through the east bay. 580 is rolling again. a big rig fire led to big headaches. abc7 news was there when caltrans crews removed the charred debris from the freeway about an hour ago. we're talking about an 11-hour closure here. the truck caught fire around 6:30 last night. after the crash, it reignited several hours later. we're waiting for an update now on the driver's condition. we know the dhl truck was carrying mail and packages until the back. it's not clear what happened to those items. now to the president's first 100 days. president trump and russian president vladimir putin are scheduled to have their first conversation assistant mr. trump took office. a senior white house official confirms the two will be speaking on the phone tomorrow. and they say national security is likely to come up in this conversation. both have expressed a desire to improve troubled u.s./russian relations following sanctions issued by the obama administration. u.s. intelligence agencies believe putin ordered the hacking into the 2016 election to help get president trump into

office. and today, the president will meet with british prime minister theresa may, the first foreign leader to visit the white house since the inauguration. may, who moments ago laid a wreath at arlington national cemetery, has this to say about vladimir putin. engage but beware. the prime minister and the president have greatly different opinions on torture, nato, and trade. may is currently negotiating her nation out of the european union. many business owners in the bay area are already balking at president trump's new way to pay for a border wall. he's proposing a 20% tax on all mexican imports. we talked to the owner of a berkeley taqueria who says it would put her under. one example? the cost of avocados. it came some from chile, some from mexico but majority from mexico and they were $100>> reporter: and with a 20% statistics. >> can you imagine? $120. no. just no. no. it's not fair. it is not fair.

late yesterday, the trump administration stressed that the import tax is just one of several ideas to raise money to help build the border wall. fear and frustration in san francisco this morning after a surprise visit from i.c.e. agents at a nonprofit that helps immigrant families. agents showed up looking for a convicted sex offender who wasn't there. you can see this picture was taken outside of a building belonging to the good samaritan family resource center. agents thought the sex offender was living at this apartment complex. in a statement, an i.c.e. spokesperson said the i.c.e. officer spoke with an individual who directed them to the correct address, which was actually next door. >> the i.c.e. police coming to a family resource center inquiring about individuals, it just seemed inappropriate. >> they struck fear in our community. and that's not good. >> the agents quickly left and made no arrests. sources tell abc7 san francisco police did not know about i.c.e.'s plans but now the chief is trying to get to the bottom of it.

an autopsy later revealed she did not die from that fire. she had injuries consistent with murder instead. st. john had been living alone after her husband's death in april. investigators want to speak to this man, captured by security cameras, he was walking to a car near the woman's house. the man was driving a 2011 to 2013 toyota corolla sedan similar to the one you see on the right. friends and family of the berkeley couple found dead inside their apartment earlier this week are going to hold a memorial service tonight. the memorial is going to be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the ed roberts campus. valerie and roger morash were found dead on monday. autopsies have been completed although the cause of death has not been determined. undocumented immigrants, deportation and crime all hot button issues here in the bay area. and especially in the wake of the kate steinle shooting. now officials are criticizing similar policies in texas after a complex crime spree that happened there. authorities busted 17 colombian

nationals in an elaborate burglary ring. it spanned several counties. two of the then had been previously deported for ties to terrorism and other crimes, but they managed to find their way back into the u.s. texas officials believe the federal government's policies towards undocumented immigrants who commit crimes are too lenient. you may remember the undocumented immigrant who shot and killed steinle had been deported five times before the 2015 shooting. happening today, a planned showdown over rent control in richmond. residents plan to rally in support of tenants while city leaders are defending rent control. it went into effect on december 30. now community is trying to protect 20,000 tenants. today's rally is scheduled to start at 12:30 at the county courthouse in martinez. the richmond-san rafael bridge lane addition is moving right along. here are a couple of changes you're going to notice soon. tomorrow morning, temporary concrete k rails are going to be

installed in the east and westbound lanes to protect workers and starteding monday, the on and off ramps to main street and san rafael are going to be temporarily closed overnight in the eastbound direction. the project to add a third eastbound lane on the bridge is expected to be completed in the fall. all right, let's talk about those cooler temperatures just about everywhere except for parts of the north bay and san francisco. that's why we have some frost developing in our inland neighborhoods but not down not south bay. so maybe close as you get up in some of the deeper valleys. some of the cooler neighborhoods at 36. san jose is about 38. 36 in redwood city right now. freezing cold in livermore at 32, novato 35, alameda and san francisco, 47. here's the way today plays out. slow warming trend continues, just a couple degrees warmer, probably won't even notice it, 56 to 59 being dav

mountains. the all-out search happening there for a dangerous bank robber. >> abc7 news reporter matt keller is there with the latest on this search. matt? >> reporter: reggie and natasha, things got really intense overnight here in the santa cruz mountains. deputies believe this bank robbery suspect broke into a woman's home and then stole her van at knife point. he is still on the loose, and he is considered to be armed and dangerous. now, check out this video of the deputies just shortly after that happened. they had their guns out, and they are looking for that suspect. now, this is a picture of him here. this was taken inside the bank of america in scotts valley when he robbed it around 10:00 yesterday morning. police chased him on highway 17. he crashed near redwood estates. scotts valley police officer fired at the suspect. the highway was shut down and the massive man hunt began.

latest update from the sheriff's office came at around 2:00 this morning. suspect was last seen in the area of aldercrof heights and locust drive. the good news, highway 17 is open in both directions this morning. good news this morning if you commute between the east bay and san francisco. >> yeah, a new ferry service is launching this morning from berkeley. abc7 news reporter elissa harrington is at the berkeley marina. >> reporter: if you're sick of getting stuck in traffic or taking b.a.r.t., there is a new way to get from berkeley to san francisco. how about on a boat. this new ferry service launches today. this is for the first time in more than ten years that ferry service will be offered between the berkeley marina and the city. it leaves here for a 20-minute trip where it will dock at pier 1.5. a private company kaulted tideline will operate these ferries. at this point, they will only

run one day a week, on fridays, with two trips during the morning commute and two evening trips. unlike other ferries with vessels that can carry a few hundred passengers, this boat is much smaller. it only holds 40 people. there is wi-fi on board, tvs and beverages. a one-way ticket is $8. i did check and the 7:30 is already sold out, but there are still tickets available for 8:30. reporting live in berkeley, elissa harrington, abc7 news. it's been nearly two months since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire if oakland. survivors and victims' families are finally beginning to receive part of almost $1 million. a foundation called gray area is going to distribute checks this week for the $900,000 they collected. 400 claims have been filed. it turns out most of them have been frauds. the mother of fire survivor sam maxwell just found out that she is going to be getting a check from gray area. >> the frustration with time is

not as much a problem for me because sam is some place safe. if i was trying to use the money right now, i would be horribly frustrated and i would probably be pretty ticked off. >> now, her son is still in the hospital in a san francisco burn unit recovering from his injuries that were suffered during the fire. the red cross tells abc7 news that it will send out their final relief checks from the additional $800,000 it collected. a bill has been introduced to establish a new gender option in california for people who do not identify as male or female. state senator scott wiener was one of two democrats to introduce the bill. the new marker is called non nonbinary and it would allow transgender residents to apply to change their gender on state identification documents. despite enormous opposition on campus, breitbart editor milo yiannopoulos will speak on berkeley's campus on wenlz.

in a letter to students, the school said it is defending the right of free expression. the controversial far right editor caused mass protests editor caused mass protests earlier this month at uc davis. that talk did not go on as scheduled. ucla and uc santa barbara have also canceled planned speeches by yiannopoulos. you may remember he was also permanently banned from twitter for his part in a targeted racist and sexist harassment campaign against leslie jones. uc berkeley looking for more space to turn into student housing including this space, peoples park. that's the site of the historic bloody thursday protest in 1969 and several other protests. according to the daily cowl, there are a total of nine locations the university is now looking at for additional housing. the daily cowl also reports the housing plan for peoples park would provide 200 to 350 beds for undergrands.

volkswagen customers say the automaker is not going a good job buying back the cars involved in the emissions cheating scandal. the company rigged hundreds of thousands of cars to give low emission ratings. volkswagen promised to buy back any tampered cars. they blame delays on an overwhelming volume of requests. about 400,000 owners have asked the company to take back their vehicles in just the first three months. facebook is using new hardware to make their accounts more secure. so the company says you can now register a security key, which is a usb drive, to your account. and that key will let you lock your account until you use the device. the key protects you from phishing and let's you, they say, log in quickly. facebook says they can be purchased through a company called ubico and starts at $18. the warriors will be well represented at the nba all-star game next month. >> klay thompson and draymond green will join steph curry and
