4:00 pm
he's had so many hours now, virtually 15 hours to make an escape and get far away from the bay area. it was not a sheriff's office vehicle, by the way, but the agency it belongs to no one is saying. the vehicle was stolen about 2:00 this morning shortly after deputies completed combing through the woods with dogs. it's not known how he got inside the sedan or whether he knew it was a law enforcement vehicle. there were no guns inside the car, that's an important point. notice, this is the vehicle or what it looks like. it's a 2009 silver malibu similar to this, california license plate 3qwi051. they are hoping someone will spot the vehicle and its driver seen here in a surveillance photo taken during at the b of a branch in scots valley. >> the suspect has determined to be very determined. you know, he's been willing to brave the elements, brave the terrain, and so, you know, it's
4:01 pm
a challenge, but it's a challenge that we hope to meet and bring him into custody. >> reporter: the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. he's accused of robbing that bank of america branch yesterday. enough time has elapsed after stealing the law enforcement vehicle that he could be virtually anywhere, so the hope is that someone in the public will spot that silver malibu and possibly it could be even captured on video somewhere or possibly even a license plate reader. we're also told that this particular unmarked law enforcement vehicle did not have a police radio in it. it also did not have gps. that is why they're saying they'll have to cast a much wider net because the distance from the bay area, the travel time could be quite great now. we are live at the sheriff's office in downtown san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. things obviously just got a lot more complicated for police, but this all began with a bank robbery around 10:00 yesterday morning at bank of america. around 2:30 police say the
4:02 pm
suspect stole a car from the redwood estates area. police started their pursuit on highway 17. they shot at the suspect but he got away on foot. then the suspect was seen overnight near aulder croft heights and locust drive. classes at lexington elementary school were cancelled as a precaution. david broke the story about the stolen car on twitter this afternoon. a reminder to follow us on twitter and the new abc 7 news app for the very latest breaking news. san francisco police are looking for a man who tried but failed to rob a bank near fisherman's wharf this week. police say he ran away from the bank just before 5:00 yesterday evening. he handed a bank employee a note demanding money and indicated he had a gun but never showed it. the employee did not comply and the man ran away. a man shot by san francisco police made his first court appearance from a hospital bed by phone to face charges of
4:03 pm
assaulting an officer. police body cameras captured the confrontation with shawn moore at his home on capital avenue. a neighbor had complained about moore banging on a wall. police used pepper spray and batons before shooting moore. san francisco's public defender has openly criticized the police for shooting moore. moore remains in the hospital because of complications from surgery after he was shot. twice in one week vandals have hit the contra costa christian schools with the same stunt. someone has been doing doughnuts on the school soccer field right before the season is about to begin. >> melanie woodrow is live with the story. >> reporter: walnut creek police were just by this field for a second time after learning that this has now happened twice. meantime the teams that play here are looking for a new place to play. >> why? why do they do this? >> reporter: that's the question the middle school soccer players and administrators want an
4:04 pm
answer to after someone tore up their soccer field right before the start of the new season. >> this isn't cool. >> reporter: the head of school says students were particularly excited to play on it this year because the field was renovated in august. >> we came in and brought in new soil, planted some seed, kbro d improved the irrigation system. the field was in better condition than it had been in years. >> reporter: the field is so bad they can't even hold practice on it. >> it was probably going to be a lot of fun and then this happened. >> reporter: not once, but twice. school administrators noticed the damage tuesday morning and then again this morning. >> it looks like somebody came back out again last night and drove up on our field and tore it up again. it looks like trying to have a good time spinning some doughnu doughnuts. >> reporter: perhaps not thinking about how their good time would take away from these kids. >> to see the field completely trashed and nobody can use it, it's frustrating. >> unfortunately we can't play here and have to go somewhere else and probably spend money
4:05 pm
when we already have a field that just got wrecked. >> reporter: the head of school says it does have security cameras but they didn't reach far enough to capture video of anyone. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. we're getting a new look at a pair of chp helicopter rescues this week in the bay area. wednesday morning crews responded to an injured hiker in sonoma county. the woman hurt her foot and was unable to walk. later that day the chp was called to mt. tam where a pa paraglider had crashed into the north side of the mountain. both the hiker and paraglider are expected to be okay. we'll start with live doppler 7 on this sunny friday afternoon. we've got clear skies all over the bay area, just a beautiful day. almost spring-like or winter-like overnight. this is blue sky looking northwestward from our sutro tower camera. 58 at mountain view, san jose and gilroy both check in at 59 degrees and a cool 55 at half moon bay. check out this view, just
4:06 pm
beautiful. from mt. tam looking out over the bay and over portions of san francisco. it's 59 in santa rosa, 61 at napa, novato at 59, 60 apiece at fairfield and concord, 56 at livermore. here's a view of the evening forecast. we'll have clear skies all the way through. the sun will set at 5:28. temperatures inland will drop into the 40s at that time and we'll see 40s everywhere by 8:00 p.m. by 10:00 p.m. look for temperatures to reach into the upper 30s between 10:00 p.m. and midnight. so we'll have a very chilly start to the day tomorrow but milder in the afternoon with lots of mild afternoons to follow. i'll have the accuweather forecast coming up very shortly. orinda officials are moving forward with plans to repair a sinkhole that's closed a road more than two weeks. today they looked over bids from contractors to fix the problem on miner road. the series of storms had them just keeping the site stable since the cave-in. a break in the weather is allowing the permanent repair to
4:07 pm
begin. those living in the area are coping with the detours and traffic. >> the neighbors have been absolutely phenomenal. actually this weekend, a neighbor right here adjacent to the sinkhole brought us some cookies and has just been phenomenal, so it's nice to have a nice relationship with people that you're putting out. >> that sinkhole is on a bridge that's 98 years old. if the weather allows, they could have a target date for reopening miner road by the end of next week. in lafayette, crews are still working to cut up this massive tree that crushed a home in burton valley. we showed it to you earlier this month when it came down. the father and son inside got out okay and say they will rebuild. crews tell us they have been working for five days now and they're not done yet. affordable housing, it's a real issue for most university of california students. >> at cal, the university is considering a plan to add housing and has identified nine new locations, including people's park, which is owned by
4:08 pm
the university. lyanne melendez has more on why it may be controversial. >> reporter: absolutely. when talking about developing or possibly developing people's park, the university, uc berkeley is well aware it needs to tread lightly. but as we all know, housing is needed not only here at cal, but at the other ucs. the entire uc system will add 2500 california students by next fall. that's in addition to the ones that have already been added. >> and it's consistent with the university's plan to grow california undergraduate enrollment by 10,000 students over three years. >> reporter: to accommodate them, all campuses have had to or are in the process of building more housing. >> as a result, the president has put together the housing initiative, and this housing initiative will bring an additional 14,000 beds by 2020. >> reporter: nowhere is the need
4:09 pm
more apparent than at cal. uc berkeley has the lowest percentage of beds for students of any campus, with 22% for undergraduates and 9% for graduate students. systemwide the number is 38% for undergraduates and 19.6% for graduate students. while cal is in the process of building more dorms, it has identified nine sites for new student housing, including one at people's park, which is owned by the university. but people's park has a history. this mural depicts the may 15, 1969, riots when a student was shot by police. there is a big homeless community. the university has been cautious about moving too quickly and is asking for discussion and input from the public and the city of berkeley. >> i see an environment that is like really truly for everybody. there's like community gardens here and stuff and people play basketball. it looks -- i mean it's just a really a place that serves a lot of different people, a lot of different needs.
4:10 pm
>> reporter: the lack of affordable housing is an issue at cal. leon strodder commutes from richmond because he can't afford to live in berkeley. >> i pay about $1,000 a month. if i have the same size house here, it would be $3,000 a month. >> reporter: uc berkeley plans to present its housing plan to the regents in march. lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. president trump has signed a new executive order intended to keep, quote, radical islamic terrorists out of the u.s. this as he's starting to speak with interntional leaders. we'll tell you about his weekend plans to talk with russian leader vladimir putin. plus -- >> reporter: thousands have come to the nation's capital for the march for life. i'm lana zak in washington, d.c. i'll have all the latest details coming up. and let's ride. for the first time in more than a decade, public ferry service returns to berkeley, but this one might not be for everyone. 7 on your side's michael finney is taking your questions on twitter and facebook.

tomorrow's the day besides video games. every day is a gift. especially for people with heart failure. but today there's entresto... a breakthrough medicine that can help make more tomorrows possible.
4:13 pm
tomorrow, i want to see teddy bait his first hook. in the largest heart failure study ever, entresto was proven to help more people stay alive and out of the hospital than a leading heart failure medicine. women who are pregnant must not take entresto. it can cause harm or death to an unborn baby. don't take entresto with an ace inhibitor or aliskiren. if you've had angioedema while taking an ace or arb medicine, don't take entresto. the most serious side effects are angioedema, low blood pressure, kidney problems, or high potassium in your blood. tomorrow, i'm gonna step out with my favorite girl. ask your doctor about entresto. and help make the gift of tomorrow possible. marchers from around the country gathered in the nation's

4:15 pm
to avoid comparisons to the women's voice on saturday. >> that voice might have been shut out last week, but pro-life is pro-woman. >> reporter: the president did not attend the march but tweeted, quote, you have my full support. and he has already taken symbolic action in a recent memorandum. >> a long standing policy to ensure taxpayer dollars do not fund abortion services overseas. >> reporter: but minority leader nancy pelosi cautions that abortion rights will not be rolled back without a fight. >> what they're doing is making it more dangerous so people can't spend their own dollars in the exchanges to have access to reproductive rights. >> reporter: 69% of americans say that they are opposed to the repeal of roe versus wade but i've been speaking with anti-abortion rights marchers who have come here symbolically between the supreme court and the u.s. capitol and they say that they are optimistic. reporting that outside the supreme court, lana zak, abc 7

news. the movement for california to secede from the united states is picking up steam tonight. >> this is interesting. california's secretary of state has given the green light for a group to take the first step in the political process. >> kristen sze is here with more. >> i want to show you the yes, california, website. just this afternoon they put up the online petition that could lead to calexit, so take a look here. if you sign on the dotted line right there, if you sign on it, it is going to mean that you want to repeal the party of our state constitution that declares californian inseparable part of the u.s. that's what that would mean. now, if the petition gets, let's say, 600,000 signatures or so in the next six months, it qualifies for the november, 2018, ballot. and if voters say yes, then in 2019, they vote on the question should california become its own country. a new reuters poll shows one-third of californians support the idea. >> our message of trying to
4:17 pm
establish a progressive republic on the western shores of north america is heard and received in the bay area and supported in general. >> now, that's the leader behind this drive. interestingly, louis marinelli is a former conservative turned progressive that now lives in russia. progressives are wary of president trump's positions on everything from women's rights to immigrant rights, but also trump supporters, like peter teal, who's on the record saying that california and the nation are better off apart. so what do you think? i have posted the question on twitter for folks to take a look and join the conversation. i've gotten about 413 votes so far. 62% of you saying secede and 38% say stay. so that's where things stand right now. we invite you to join the conversation. lrry and ama. >> thank you so much, kristen. former state schools superintendent

a check on our weather. might we have a nice sunny weekend? >> it may happen. we're going from the extremely chilly weather of the early morning hours to the nice mild spring-like weather of the afternoons. here's a look at live doppler 7 and it is a nice spring-like afternoon right now but temperatures will be dropping rather sharply after the sun goes down. this is the view of the golden gate bridge where skies are blue and traffic is flowing. it will be a chilly start tomorrow morning. we'll see milder days in the afternoon through monday with rain returning the middle of next week. here's a look at our forecast animation overnight. notice a patch of low clouds near the coastline. we'll see some low clouds and fog beginning to spill through the carquinez strait and delta from the central valley but won't affect much of the bay area, just a path through the central part of the region. by 9:00 tomorrow morning we'll see the fog disappearing giving way to sunny conditions and milder weather. it's going to be downright cold in some spots, starting in the

north bay valleys where low temperatures will drop to 31 at santa rosa, 32 in napa. over in the inland east bay we'll see lows in the low to mid-30s. a low of 35 at san jose. around the bay we'll see lows right around or just above 40 degrees. tomorrow's highs will soar, if you will, up to 60, 62 degrees in the mildest locations. even on the coast we'll see 60 degrees tomorrow. as we look ahead to monday, which will be the warmest day in the forecast period, look at the projected highs for monday or compared with the average highs for monday's date, january 30th. you'll see san jose is 6 degrees above average high on monday and, let's see, the warmest spot, santa rosa, 11 degrees above the average high for the date so pretty mild weather coming our way. we've got rain coming our way the middle of next week. a storm will rank 1 on the storm impact scale. 9:00 wednesday night we'll see
4:21 pm
the rain becoming more widespread into thursday morning and then the storm intensifies and on thursday it will rank 2 on the impact scale accompanied by winds ranging from 20 to 30 miles an hour and up to an inch of additional rainfall going through thursday and into friday. so we've got some quite wet weather coming our way toward the end of next week. let's get down to the accuweather seven-day forecast. this weekend is looking nice, sunny and mild. tomorrow marks the beginning of the lunar new year, the year of the rooster. it gets even milder on sunday and monday. even on tuesday as clouds increase it will still be mild but rain arrives on wednesday, a storm ranking 1. stronger storm on thursday and showers and rain lingering into friday. storm ranking 1 again on friday. >> thank you, spencer. well, the ultimate in puppy love. check out this dog sharing her new babies with her foster mom. it's a great story in just a few minutes. and abc news will bring you
