now at 11:00, a man-hunt for a bank robber. sky 7 overhead as this guy tries to sprint away from the police. he couldn't outrun them. and tonight he is in custody. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil in for dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. three people arrested today and investigators are confident one of them is the criminal who had been evading them for the last day. >> details from katie marzullo. >> reporter: the manhunt actually started yesterday morning in scotts valley when the bank of america was robbed and that manhunt, you'll remember, forced the closure of highway 17 for almost ten hours.

san jose police swarmed the area of mission and 7th streets after spotting a stolen car linked to a bank robbery. a silver chevy taken from a home in the santa cruz mountains that happens to be an unmarked law enforcement vehicle. police had followed the car from downtown to an apartment complex. michael bonnell lives there. he says he heard a loud noise, went outside and encountered police. >> they hailed me to come out past the gate. and with their weapons drawn at me and told me to put my hands up. so of course i did. >> police told him to evacuate the area. people in nearby homes had to shelter in place. police say there were three people in the silver car. they took two into custody without incident. but the third man ran. >> i can't overstate the danger that he posed to the people that live in that complex. >> reporter: the suspect made his way from the apartment property to a neighboring construction site. >> they told us to evacuate everybody on site, police are on site with guns ready to shoot, get everybody out. >> reporter: an officer deployed a taser at one point and the man was eventually taken into custody. at the time authorities didn't know for sure if the men were

involved in thursday's bank robbery in scotts valley, but they knew they had to be cautious. >> they were occupants of a stolen vehicle. and when we challenged them and attempted to arrest him he fled. when we attempted to take him into custody, he resisted. >> reporter: police say the men are being questioned separately as the investigation into the bank robbery continues. in san jose katie marzullo, abc 7 news. we have some breaking news now. moments ago crews rescued a man who fell several dozen feet near those abandoned apartments in pacifica. abc 7 news was at esplanade avenue was he was pulled to safety. the apartments there have been red tagged because they're falling into the ocean. responders say the man got in through a fence and then he fell down the cliff. he appeared to be alert when they hoisted him up. speaking of esplanade avenue, demolition work will start on monday on one of those apartment complexes, sitting right on top of that eroding cliff. you can see how the ground below the building at 310 esplanade has simply vanished. this a look from sky 7.

pacifica officials decided last year nobody could live in the building. crews have already knocked down two other buildings on esplanade avenue. in developing news, tonight there's swift reaction to president trump's sweeping executive order to ban refugees plus people from seven muslim countries. here's what it includes. an immediate suspension of immigration from countries with ties to terror. also a suspension of all refugees for 120 days. however, the order places a priority on allowing christian refugees into the country. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana joins us live with the fallout from this. sergio? >> reporter: ama, churches and other religious groups in the bay area that advocate for refugees are dismayed by this executive order and members of the muslim community say they feel like they're being unfairly targeted. the executive order signed by president donald trump fulfills one of the promises he made on the campaign trail. >> we only want to admit those into our country who will support our country and love deeply our people. >> reporter: the order bans

entry of most people traveling to the united states with passports from seven countries -- iran, iraq, syria, sudan, libya, yemen, and somalia. the presidential order met with swift reaction from the council on american islamic relations. >> if someone is a non-citizen in the united states and they're from one of the seven countries that the trump administration is targeting, we would suggest that they consult with an attorney before any international travel. >> reporter: according to cnn, google has sent out an advisory to employees from these seven countries to cancel any travel out of the u.s. basam rafai with the syrian-american council says he has a friend who has a u.s. green card and is already being affected by this executive order. >> he's of syrian descent and is visiting family in turkey right now and there's a worry he's not going to be able to get back in the united states. >> reporter: the response from california's congressional delegation has been critical of president trump's order. on national holocaust remembrance day senator kamala

harris made a special reference in one of her tweets. "during the holocaust we failed to let refugees like anne frank into our country. we can't let this history repeat itself." now, there is already a legal challenge in the works. the council on american islamic relations is planning a news conference monday to announce a lawsuit against this executive order. larry, back to you. >> all right, sergio, thank you. a bay area businessman is not taking any chance the trump administration might delete years of hard work done by the environmental protection agency. billionaire hedge fund manager tom stier and his non-profit next gen climate are taking steps to preserve the epa's climate change findings. stier copied the entire website and moved it over to saveourepa.com. >> what we're worried about is the yfd a war on truth. that the administration is going to try and suppress information,

ruling protecting a woman's right to seek an abortion. a reminder. stay on top of president trump's first 100 days in office with the abc 7 news app. download the app for free and enable push alerts to get breaking news updates as they happen. part of niles canyon road between fremont and sunol will be closed tomorrow while 100 trained searchers look for a missing woman whose car plunged into alameda creek. 18-year-old jada jenkins was not inside her car when searchers pulled it from the water on tuesday. witnesses say jenkins veered into the creek during a rainstorm last saturday. niles canyon road will close between mission boulevard and main street. that's from 7:00 in the morning until 6:00 tomorrow evening. new at 11:00, residents of san francisco's millennium tower learned this evening that it is safe to live in their sinking and tilting homes. the "chronicle" reports city building inspectors found no life safety concerns. they did discover the uneven settling of the high rise has strained parts of the building's electrical system.

designers expected the building to sink six inches and it sunk 16 inches so far. the mystery of a rancid odor plaguing richmond and surrounding areas may be solved. >> abc 7 news reporter katie utehs tells us about the facility county officials are now citing. >> it's like garbage and decaying bodies. >> it's definitely a more organic rancid smell than your sulfuric refinery smells. >> reporter: richmond has a pungent and perplexing problem. >> we've had patrols of people going out and sniffing the air at all times of the day and night trying to pinpoint the issue. >> reporter: turns out that mysterious odor traces back to this facility where they process compost. it's led county health officials to issue a cease and desist order. >> we feel like they are not operating their facility correctly at this time and we want them to cease bringing in new material. there's still a lot of material on site. >> reporter: republic services processes garbage, recycling,

and green waste from all over contra costa county. inspectors discovered large compost piles that weren't maintained properly. >> it actually started becoming essentially rancid. >> i'm happy to see public agencies were taking things under control. >> reporter: complaints go beyond the 400 filed for odor. the county knows of seven fires at the facility. >> if you don't turn these piles, the opposite of turning rancid, they can actually start automatically catching fire. >> reporter: a republic representative told city council members the order is "unfortunate and unnecessary. according to the "contra costa times." our requests for comment have not been returned. county officials are levying fines and plan to meet with republic next week. in richmond katie utehs, abc 7 news. well, talk about the ultimate perk. the company now giving employees six weeks' paid sabbatical. plus, five decades in film. remembering an oscar-nominated actor tonight.

movie fans are mourning the death of oscar-nominated british actor sir john hurt this evening. hurt's career spanned more than 50 years in film, on tv, and as a voice actor. hurt terrified audiences in "alien" and was nominated for an academy award for his role in "midnight express." the 77-year-old also appeared in the "harry potter" movies. hurt died in london from pancreatic cancer. real estate website zillow

is telling its long-time employees take some time off. on the company. employees who reach the six-year mark can now take six-week sabbaticals. benefits will continue the entire time. they'll get paid for three of the six weeks. zillow tested it last year with some employees. a spokesperson said they came back refreshed and energized. here's a story about an odd couple. they're roommates, and they were born more than a half century apart. >> however, once you meet them, you may not think their friendship is weird. reporter leslie lopez from our sister station in l.a. has the story. >> reporter: bob and chris are unlikely roommates who today share a west hollywood apartment. she's 89 and he's 31. they say they're each other's's best friend. >> i never thought i would have an 89-year-old best friend. but it happened. >> i don't know what to say except it's the best friend i've probably ever had. >> reporter: this friendship began five years ago when chris moved in next door and waved as he passed norma's apartment

window. >> i say hi to everybody. but chris was the cutest. >> one day i came in the apartment and she offered me a glass of champagne. and we've been best friends ever since. >> reporter: over the years their friendship grew. their outings documented on social media with the hashtag my neighbor norma. >> we would have pizza night every friday night. so i would always hashtag my neighbor norma. and it just stuck with people. >> reporter: but most recently norma has been battling cancer and after three months in the hospital she was released to go home but under one condition. she needed 24-hour care. with no family in state and go fund me.com donations running low, chris offered to have her move in with him. >> i think i would have done the same thing for him. i probably would have. but i'm not positive. >> reporter: but now both of their worlds have been turned upside down. but they seem to be loving every minute of their time together. >> the best part about last year was when we got the opportunity
