good morning. i'm erielle reshef. >> and i'm ryan smith. kendis and diane are off this morning, and we begin with that breaking news, a mass shooting at a mosque in canada. six worshippers killed in what's being called a terror attack in quebec city. >> eight people were hurt in the attack. the victims were said to range in age from 35 to 70 years old. witnesses say the gunmen wore ski masks and opened fire on worshippers at the end of the prayer service. two suspects are now in custody. >> two suspects were arrested, and one was arrested here, and the other one was arrested near d'orleans. we can confirm that it's an act of terrorism. >> canada's prime minister has been very vocal in his support of muslim refugees. after last night's attack, he reiterated that support saying diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we as canadians hold dear. well, the new york police

department is stepping up patrols at mosques and other hours of worship here in the city in response to the attack. the mayor reminded all new yorkers to remain vigilant. president trump insists his executive order aimed at blocking people from certain countries is not a muslim ban. >> and protesters are planning more rallies from coast to coast fighting for the immigrants and refugees now in legal limbo, but last night a senior white house official called the ban a massive success story. abc's elizabeth hur has the latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: ryan, erielle, good morning, and, yes, white house officials maintain this is about protecting america, but protesters, well, they're not buying it even taking their fight to the courts. so far lawsuits have been filed in four states and counting. from los angeles to chicago, detroit and new york. outrage on the streets and at airports across the country. >> we are here to make this country with you guys. >> trump's america is not my america.

>> reporter: protesters sounding off slamming president trump's travel ban. lawyers flocking to airport terminals offering free legal help to anyone in need. >> the president's executive order is unconstitutional. it's clearly discriminating against muslims. >> reporter: but in a statement the trump administration fired back saying this is not about religion. this is about terror and keeping our country safe. >> if there are folks that shouldn't be in this country, they're going to be detained and so apologize for nothing here. >> reporter: the white house not apologizing even though the seven countries on trump's list were not involved in a single major terror attack on u.s. soil. some are standing by the president. >> take care of our own first and then take care of others. >> reporter: but thanks in part to intervention from the courts, now there is some clarification. green card holders, lawful permanent residents from the

seven countries being targeted won't be denied entry, but they will likely face extra questions. and now at least 16 state attorneys general are vowing to take action calling this un-american, and legal experts say some of these cases could end up in the supreme court. erielle and ryan. >> looks like the legal battle is just beginning, elizabeth. thank you very much. we are learning new details about some of the travelers stranded by the restrictions. a chemical engineer from iran, who is a legal permanent resident of the united states, was detained when he stepped off a ship in florida after a cruise to mexico. he was released three hours later. and among the travelers affected, a man who had arrived from iran to los angeles on a valid visa to be reunited with his wife. he was forced to fly back to iran, but then a judge reversed that ruling, ordered him returned to the united states. his family is still waiting to see what happens. congressional democrats are coming out strong against the president's ban including senate minority leader chuck schumer. >> he delivered an emotional

statement as he vowed to introduce legislation to overturn the order. >> this executive order was mean-spirited and un-american. >> the koch brothers are reported among the critics of the executive order calling it the wrong approach. according to "the washington post," conservative billionaire charles koch said the nation is facing a moment of tremendous danger with a choice between the authoritarian route or a free and open society. >> and the head of starbucks is taking action in response to the president's travel restrictions. ceo howard schultz says the coffee chain will hire 10,000 refugees over the next five years. schultz says the focus will be on hiring immigrants who have served with u.s. troops as interpreters and support personnel. a u.s. navy s.e.a.l. has been killed in a firefight against al qaeda forces in yemen. the identity of the s.e.a.l. who died has not been revealed. three others were hurt in the

battle. now, the planning of the raid started under the obama administration, but president trump gave it the green light. it was meant to be a secret operation but the loss of life changed that. a major shake-up on the national security council. president trump has given his controversial chief strategist steve bannon a seat on the top committee. meanwhile, the director of national intelligence and chairman of joint chiefs of staffs have been demoted to invitation only status. president trump could announce his supreme court nominee today. abc news has learned that the president has two top choices, federal appeals court judges neal gorsuch and thomas hardiman. a seat on the nation's highest court has been vacant since the death of justice antonin scalia in february. president obama nominated judge merrick garland, but senate republicans refused to hold hearings. some democrats are now predicting a major fight over president trump's nominee. delta air lines says that things are returning to normal overnight after a systems outage. >> the carrier's ceo calling the

situation that began sunday night not acceptable. about 150 flights were canceled and more were expected. a power outage in august led delta to cancel more than 2,000 flights over three days, and exactly a week earlier, united airlines grounded its domestic flights due to a computer outage. >> never fun at the airport when that happens. >> no. well, one brief weather mention, by the way. there is snow falling this morning for a wide swath of the eastern u.s. >> some areas could see a few inches of accumulation. there's also snow for the upper midwest. nearly half a foot in parts of minnesota and wisconsin. well, coming up, how to avoid a phone scam by not saying a word. also, taking over toyota. the japanese carmaker is no longer number one when it comes to car sales. and we're continuing to follow that mosque shooting in quebec. what our terrorist expert says about possible motives. expert says about possible motives.

there is a new phone scam to warn you about this morning, and it's based on just one word. >> yeah, the manner in which you answer your phone could determine whether you become a victim. here's abc's gloria rivera. >> can you hear me okay? >> reporter: the new warning about a scam hooking consumers with one word. when mary kuczborski's phone rang, it was a man on the line. >> and when it came on it was a gentleman, nice voice and he said can you hear me. >> reporter: she dodged the scammer, but the bbb warning the simple con is working. it's that simple? >> well, it can be. >> reporter: here's how it works, you answer the phone, a recorded voice or a live person will then ask can you hear me? if you answer yes, the scammer records it. consumer protection experts says later the scammer will call you

back and claim you owe money on products or services you said you'd buy. protest and the scammer plays back your own voice as evidence you agreed. the scammer then instructs you to pay up via wire transfer, gift card or money order. how much money are we talking about every year? >> well, people lose about $50 billion to scams every year. >> 50 billion. >> 25% of that may be phone scams. >> reporter: if you listen carefully, you can tell some of those calls are a little robotic. experts say the best advice is don't answer calls from numbers you don't know, and if you hear that question, can you hear me, hang up immediately. gloria rivera, abc news, washington. let's turn now to a major recall involving volkswagen's audi brand. the automaker is recalling 600,000 vehicles in the u.s. for defects that could lead to fires or air bag malfunctions. a5s, a5 cabriolets and some q5 crossovers are among those affected and q5s dating

you see they were fishing off galveston, texas, when their boat started taking on water. they drifted ten miles offshore before being picked up. thankfully everyone is okay. hugs all around. there will be clear skies across texas and the entire u.s. roads could be clogged by some mountain snow in the northern rockies. slippery conditions around the great lakes. and if you're heading to the airport, there are going to be weather-related delays in minneapolis. returning now to our breaking news, a deadly terror attack on a mosque in canada. six worshippers were killed when a gunman opened fire. several others were gravely wounded. two men have now been taken into custody. we asked abc counterterrorism contributor and former fbi special agent in charge steve gomez about the attack given the current political climate. >> politics is always at play when you're talking about a terrorist attack. so, in this situation we've got a lot going on politically in the u.s., now in canada, around the world, and so it's always

and ran straight into the tree also knocked down a power line, which is adding to the cleanup time there. crews had to make sure the line wasn't live before they cleared the scene. we have breaking news this morning. iraq is taking swift action in response to president trump's executive order temporarily banning citizens from seven muslim majority countries from entering the u.s. iraq's parliament approved a reciprocity measure this morning that restricts americans from entering iraq. it is not clear yet who that applies to. the president's order imposed a 90-day ban on u.s. travel by citizens of iraq, syria, iran, sudan, libya, somalia and yemen, and a 120-day suspension of the u.s. refugee program. a warning for travelers after impassioned protests at sfo. >> hundreds packed the terminal denouncing president trump's order. amy hollyfield is live this morning. >> good morning, reggie. the protesters have gone ho
