good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson on what's starting out to be a very busy morning on "world news now." protesters swarming the uc berkeley campus to demonstrate against a scheduled speech by the editor of the conservative news outlet breitbart news. that speech was suddenly canceled when some protesters turned violent breaking windows, hurling smoke bombs. the scenes in berkeley overnight. negotiations underway to end a day long hostage crisis at a maximum security prison in delaware. inmates took four corrections workers hostage and later released two of them. a federal judge dealt an apparent blow to part of president trump's immigration ban ordering the government to allow people holding immigrant visas from the seven nations listed in the ban to be allowed into the u.s.

protesting a scheduled speech by my low yiannopoulos. police decided they couldn't guarantee safety and canceled the speech and evacuated him from the building. abc's alex stone is there with details. >> reporter: the protests in berkeley started long before breitbart editor milo yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak. in the late afternoon, his supporters and opponents started rallying on campus. fires were set on campus and fireworks were lit off. police called in help from other bay area police departments as windows were being broken and officers being pelted with rocks and flaming objects. >> we're very happy that this fascist yiannopoulos was run off by the community for determined equality. we will not tolerate hate crimes and violence. he's a fascist. berkeley did not welcome him.

>> reporter: police tried to control the crowd, officers holding tear gas launchers warned protesters to leave but they refused to go. yiannopoulos's speech was canceled. a similar event canceled near uc davis. some of the protest serious claiming his rhetoric is hateful. he called into fox news as the protests were unfolding. >> violent protesters caused me to be evacuated this evening preventing me from giving the last speech in my tour which was supposed to be exactly about this problem. >> reporter: he took to facebook writing the left is the absolutely terrified of free speech. alex stone, abc news, los angeles. >> all right. we'll continue to follow the

developments there on the west coast. we talk politics now. president trump talking tough blasting australia's prime minister for what he calls a dumb deal. >> according to "the washington post," the president got into a >> i'm not going to comment on these reports of a conversation. australians know me very well. i always stand up for australia in every forum. >> so according to that "washington post" report, an angry president trump ended that phone call abruptly. it was supposed to be an hour long conversation but ended after 25 minutes. and he told turnbull he had spoken to several other world leaders by phone that day. and that their conversation was

by far the worst. so i think it's off to a good start there between the two. this was another tweet from the president last night. iran is rapidly taking over more and more of iraq even after the u.s. has squandered $3 trillion there. earlier and without elaborating, the national security advisor mike flynn said the u.s. was officially putting iran on notice. flynn's warning comes after recent iranian missile tests and other actions considered provocative by the administration. the white house says a range of responses are right now being considered. there's a political face-off on capitol hill rolfing all of trump's cabinet nominees. many haven't yet been confirmed. one of them in particular is facing criticism from both sides of the aisle. mary bruce has the details. >> reporter: trump's billionaire pick to lead the education department could be the first confirmation casualty. >> i cannot vote to confirm her. >> reporter: two republican senators, susan collins and lisa murkowski now saying they won't vote for betsy devos, both citing her lack of experience.

this all looks yummy for the normal humans that eat this stuff. >> this is the basics. this is the basics of super bowl, wings, dips, sliders, you can't go wrong but you definitely need some spice. start with the wings. my spice agent in this recipe is tabasco sauce as well as cayenne pepper. they're great. they're easy. i love the combination of cumin. there's a lot of different things, ginger powder, as well. >> on a scale of 1 to 10, how hot. >> probably an . probably like an 8. when you've got cayenne and tabasco sauce. >> you're not going to be taste anything else. >> tabasco sauce is flavorful. gives you really good flavor. we've got some sliders going on here. hawaiian pork sliders. i've done two variations, the typical burger sliders, ground pork and season it accordingly. you'll see the recipe online.

i've also done basically this is smith feed's seasoned carnitas. they're preseasoned and you just pop them in the oven real quick. and you can make the sliders with this, as well. on the sliders, ham as well as, as well grilled pineapple. >> so there comes a hawaiian aspect. >> exactly? when you have the pork it, kind of gives it a little cuban sandwich type of feel, pork and ham. >> with the pineapple almost makes it healthy. >> exactly. grill your pineapples, yeah, right. put that on your stove top grill and get account good caramelization going. >> that sounds good. >> chili. this is a little different type of chili going on here. what i've done is i've made a delicious turkey chili. get my recipe online. i've stuffed them in like little bread rolls. you can basically cut out the middle and stuff your -- >> there's nothing in there.

tillerson will also have to handle deteriorating relations with mexico just five days after the mexican president canceled a visit to washington. >> but most pressing might be iran. the president has tweeted iran is rapidly taking over more and more of iraq even after the u.s. has squandered $3 trillion there. that followed a warning to iran, as well. abc's martha raddatz with more on that. >> reporter: the security adviser came to the white house podium unexpectedly, and took no questions, but his message to iran was blunt. >> as of today, we are officially putting iran on notice. >> reporter: general flynn's warning came after iran's test of yet another ballistic missile and other provocative actions including high speed approaches to u.s. warships. >> iran continues to threaten u.s. friends and allies in the region. >> reporter: while flynn blasted the obama administration for what he called an inadequate response to iran in the past, the white house did not specify how they would hold iran

accountable now, saying just that they are considering options and will take appropriate action. they didn't put a military option on the table but they didn't rule it out either. what mike flynn really did was let iran know there is a new sheriff in town and he may not be pulling a gun out but he's got one in his holster. martha raddatz. >> the president is also taking a hard line with australia, reportedly slamming the prime minister during a phone call, then taking aim again on twitter a few hours ago. according to the "washington post," he tore into the prime minister malcolm turnbull over a deal struck by the obama administration that would allow refugees to resettle in u.s. the president accused turnbull of trying to export "the next boston bombers to the u.s." when asked to comment, turnbull was tight lipped. >> look, thanks for your inquiry but i'm not going to comment on these reports out of the united

a scheduled speech by controversial breitbart news editor at uc berkeley abruptly canceled after protests are turned violent. hundreds demonstrated peacefully for hours and then some broke away throwing smoke bombs, setting a bonfire and breaking windows lashing out against milo yiannopoulos. he's an alt-right conservative and a vocal donald trump supporter who has been called a white supremacist. no word on any serious injuries or arrests so far but kept authorities at berkeley on guard for several hours. 76 protesters have been arrested at the dakota access pipeline. authorities say the demonstrators refused to leave the camp set up on private land. the company building the pipeline wants a judge to seal or redact sensitive documents. there are some concerns the information could be used by someone looking to damage the pipeline. and negotiations are under way to end a hostage crisis at maximum security prison in delaware. that unfolded yesterday morning

when inmates took four corrections department workers hostage, prompting a statewide prison lockdown. two of those hostages have since been released but two still being held. inmates told a local reporter they're concerned about the treatment and the leadership of the united states. the military is confirming civilians were killed during sunday's raid in yemen. u.s. central command is also investigating reports that children may have been among the casualties. navy seal william ryan owens was killed. three others wounded. central command says the possible civilian casualties may have been caught in an aerial gun fight battle. the president and his daughter ivanka travelled to delaware to honor william owens. the 36-year-old was a member of seal team six. his remains arrived at dover air force base. the illinois native enlisted 19 years ago. the chief special warfare operator earned three bronze stars for heroic services.

he was on his 12th deployment. and ivanka accompanied her dad to delaware because the first lady is in new york. despite some speculation that melania trump might not move to dc, her staff says she intends to live at the white house after the school year ends. the first lady is showing signs of her larger role in the east wing hiring a chief of staff, we're told who will be in charge of day to day operations of the first lady's office. so with all of that news going on, it's tough to remember that we're closing in on the super bowl. >> that's right. >> there is that. the patriots and falcons aren't the only ones getting ready for sunday's big event. >> gaga has been fine tuning her performance. from high overhead yesterday. we got a glimpse of some work being done on the stage. >> okay. so that's the stage right there. >> uh-huh. >> the video was shot by another helicopter from our station ktrk. after awhile, they shut the stadium roof so our prying eyes couldn't see what was going on. >> boo, we want to know. >> but we can tell you the main stage will look black. >> that's breaking amazing

considered provocative by the administration. white house officials say a range of responses are right now being considered. the president is also coming down hard on australia, reportedly blasting the prime minister during a phone call, then doubling down on twitter overnight. according to "the washington post," the president tore into prime minister malcolm turnbull over a deal that would allow mostly muslim refugees to settle in the u.s. the "post" reports that the president accused turn bull of trying to export "the next boston bombers to the united states." the president left no doubt about his position sending out a tweet late last night that said, do you believe it, the obama administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from australia. why? i will study this dumb deal. no doubt there will be a lot more about that a little bit later on today. a key member of the president's inner circle is under fire this morning. some democrats are urging the removal of chief strategist steve bannon from the national security council. the democrats are angry because all of this stems from bannon's

own words and controversial view of the world. abc's cecilia vega with more. >> reporter: the white house pressed about president trump's chief strategist and his controversial views on islam. last year, steve bannon said this. >> it's pretty dark here in europe right now, but there is something actually much darker and that is islam. >> reporter: bannon the former publisher of that alt-right news site breitbart is now seen as one of the most powerful people in the white house. "usa today" reviewed dozens of hours of bannon on the radio unearthing comments like this. >> to be brutally frank, i mean, christianity is dying in europe and islam is on the rise. let's talk about that. >> reporter: the white house trying to distance the president. >> steve bannon can be heard on recording saying islam is a dark religion. not a religion of peace. a religion of submission. does the president share his chief strategist's apparent beliefs on islam? >> i think the president has been very clear that his number one goal is not to target any one religion, but places and areas where we believe there is an issue.

political agenda remains deeply troubling." cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. and new overnight, homeland security secretary john kelley has revealed the timetable for the controversial border wall with mexico. general kelly joined texas governor greg abbott for a tour of the texas, mexico border and tells fox news he wants that wall finished within two years. the secretary and governor abbott discussed border security and trade with mexico. kelly met with state and federal law enforcement agents. the widow of the pulse nightclub killer will remain in federal custody. a judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation of noor salmon before deciding what she can be set free. prosecutors say salman knew her husband was watching an isis videos leading up to the attacking that left 49 people dead and 53 others injured. her lawyers insist she had no advance knowledge of that shooting. and engine trouble forcing this jumbo jet to make an emergency landing in one of the most remote parts of canada. the swiss air flight from zurich to los angeles landing at this
