owing you that the damage extended beyond campus. they've got graffiti here, damaged atms, also have crews patching up windows that were broken here at this building. also sweeping up. a lot of work to do here. they've been hard at work all morning here. here's what it looked like on campus, some angry demonstrators set fire to a generator. this was outside the student union building. police say there were about 1500 people who turned out last night to protest milo yiannopoulos coming to campus. as protesters calling him racist and sexist. >> we'd like to engage in a reasonable debate, that's one thing but that's not his aim. never has been. he's here to make money off of spewing hate. >> reporter: yiannopoulos's speech was canceled because of the protests. he was safely escorted off campus. the breitbart editor responded by saying the left cannot tolerate free speech. police say one person was arrested. no injuries were reported.

the lockdown that was placed on the campus was lifted late last night so they are expecting to have a normal day at berkeley today. reporting live at berkeley, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. and this video, look at what happens to this woman in the red hat in the middle of an interview. pepper sprayed in the face. she was there hoping to hear yiannopoulos talk and was speaking with abc7 news reporter wayne freedman when that protester reached out and did that. the woman told wayne that she's doing okay. now to the president's harsh words for uc berkeley this morning. >> jessica at the live desk with that story. >> president trump already starting a fire storm this morning, tweeting about last night's protest. here's that tweet. if uc berkeley does not allow free speech and practicing violence on innocent people with a different point of view, no federal funds, question mark, and that no federal funds all in

caps. the question could imply that federal funds for the school would be on the line, but he doesn't elaborate. in fact, the president has been very active on his @real donald trump account this morning but he's moved on to other subjects after this berkeley tweet but this thing is still blowing up. i just checked seconds ago it had 8,000 replies, 11,000 retweets. >> milo yiannopoulos went on facebook live after he was evacuated. he slammed what he called leftist protesters and the police response. >> the police presence did not seem to be particularly aggressive this evening and that's something that i witnessed and that my security detail witnessed. it was a sort of sit back, let it happen approach. i was evacuated really at the first sign of trouble. trouble did get a lot worse after i leave so i think i would have had to leave anyway so this event may never have got off the ground. it seems as though the university and police didn't really want it to happen. >> and we did send out push

he opened fire, wounding that man and the suspect died later at the hospital. neighbors were ordered to shelter in place as the police searched the area for another possible subject. >> it's kind of unnerving with the s.w.a.t. was here and they're telling us shelter in place. >> police didn't end up finding any other suspects. investigators haven't said if the man who was shot had a weapon. this morning, san rafael police are warning residents about a rash of home burglaries. investigators say all of the burglaries happen during the day. the burglars took jewelry, valuables and other easily concealed items. in some cases, they hit multiple houses on the same street. officials are asking residents to be vigilant about vehicles and people they don't recognize in the neighborhood. morgan hill police are warning about a rash of car burglaries. burglars have broken into 20 cars in the past week. here's a post of one break-in.

police are reminding all of us to park in well-lit areas, lock our doors and keep anything valuable out of sight. you will have a chance to weigh in on oakland unifi school district. members want to know the qualities you're looking for in the district's next leader. the board will start taking applications for the job on february 27 and hopes to have the new superintendent in place by may 10. today, of course, is groundhog day and just about ten minutes ago, pungs phil made his prediction. >> i'm on the edge of my seat. >> oh yes. >> through a translator, phil made it clear that he saw his shadow. we are in for another six weeks of winter. i hate to be the bearer of that bad news unless you love winter, and then congratulations. phil saw his shadow 102 times and forecasted an early spring just 18 times, including last year. he is not accurate.

1 to 3 feet above 7,000 feet. if you can see this, places like donner and kirkwood more than 2 feet of snow. back here at home, temperatures running in the upper 40s to low 50s, hang out through saturday. look at the rest of the weekend, which is wet coming up next. i do have an update to the fatality investigation in the novato area. police were able to get the lanes back open earlier than they thought they would so the atherton onramp back open as is the far right lane on the main line so that is good news for the commute through novato but the bad news, a new crash basically in that same area just south of there, southbound 101, solo vehicle crash lost control, hit the center divide and flipped over. that vehicle landed on its wheels and that is partially block the far left lane at this point. wet pavement this morning. here's a look at that through the bay bridge toll plaza. slow down and drive for conditions today. i have two more spinout crashes to talk about. we'll do that coming up.

and we are back. happening today, activists planning a protest at uber headquarters in san francisco and other locations across the country. they're demanding that the ceo cut his ties with president trump. the ceo's part of a panel of business leaders meeting with the president at the white house tomorrow. uber enraged customers after drivers crossed a taxi driver picket line related to the immigration order at jfk airport last weekend. now, their ceo says his working relationship with the president is necessary to fulfill uber's mission. this morning, the trump white house has a brand-new secretary of state. former exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson was sworn in last night in the oval office. already, there are new challenges for the nation's top diplomat. >> reporter: this morning, top u.s. ally australia criticized by president trump on twitter over a deal to resettle some

refugees in the u.s. the president saying in a late-night tweet, do you believe it? the obama administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from australia. why? i will study this dumb deal. but the australian prime minister telling a different story. >> the president assured me that he would continue with -- honor the agreement. >> reporter: according to the "washington post," the president slammed the australian prime minister during a weekend phone call over a deal struck by the obama administration. the post also reporting that the president accused australia of trying to export, quote, the next boston bombers to the u.s. abc news has not independently confirmed details of the call. the australian prime minister will only say the call ended courteously, but beyond that, no comment. so, from iran to australia, the travel ban and mexico, secretary of state rex tillerson, who was just sworn in last night,

certain has his plate full as he reports to work for his first full day on the job today. abc news new york. new this morning, iranian officials are responding to president trump putting iran, quote, on notice for conducting missile tests. in just the past hour, a top adviser to iran's supreme leader said it was use let for the u.s. to threaten iran and that iran didn't need permission from any country to defend itself. the white house yesterday called iran a threat to u.s. allies and said the administration wouldn't stand for it. wells fargo scandal over sham accounts is costing hundreds of laidoff bank workers their severance. in mid-november, banking regulators put a limit on how much wells fargo can pay fired workers. it was intended to curb golden parachute packages. the bank says as a result it hasn't been able to pay severance to about 400 workers laid off after washington imposed the restriction. almost 5,000 workers laid off before november have gotten

their money. richmond is asking residents to weigh in on a plan to shut down one of the city's four post offices. the u.s. postal service says the office on nevin avenue is not needed anymore. a richmond city council member disagrees. tey will accept public comments for the next seven days. oakland rards owner mark davis is assuring vegas officials that other investors are lined up to replace sheldon adelson. roger god del talked about the raiders situation. they have a lot of research to get done if they want to vote on a vegas deal in their meetings next month. >> if we can't complete that by march, we'll deal with that, but the ultimately mat objective here is to make the right decision and i've said it many times before. relocations are painful and you want to be intelligent and thorough and make sure that we do it with a great deal of

sensitivity. >> the commissioner also announced the raiders will play the patriots in mexico city next season. it's the second year in a row the silver and black have been scheduled to play south of the border. the match-up will be considered a home game for the raiders. let's take a look at what's happening weather-wise. >> most areas, it is a lot lighter than it was during the overnight hours, which is kind of what we talked about yesterday. most of us would be sleeping during the heaviest of the rain but if you're traveling through the santa cruz mountains, it's still a bear. look at all that wet weather falling there. but it makes it about as far north as saratoga and then drops off to just drizzle in the south bay. light showers from bay point, brentwood, discovery bay and byron, altamont pass, patterson pass, all those possibly a little wet. here's a look at 80 from vallejo all the way down to richmond and across the richmond bridge. you can see 101 and across 37, i don't think it's heavy enough to cause flooding but you can see a little bit of ponding as you head west toward the toll plaza

in richmond, definitely some rain there. waves of wet weather, breezy all day today, heavier showers return tonight and scattered light showers for the weekend. not a washout. today's storm is going to be a 1 because of the mainly light nature and the scattered nature of the showers, breezy all day, minimal damage, and variable driving conditions. then the south bay may be a lot dryer than the north bay. you can see from 7:00 to 9:00, the yellows kind of go away and we have scattered green all the way through the afternoon into the evening hours and then about 2:00 tonight, just like this morning, through about 7:00, that's when we'll see the moderate rain and more ponding on the roadways for tomorrow's morning commute. we've got a 1 for saturday and sunday but it's exceptionally light rain. i want you to be aware that it could rain at times. the heavier rain will move in monday and taper tuesday. today's the kind of day where we're going to see a lot of solo vehicle spinout crashes, folks driving too fast for conditions and here we go. eastbound 80 at powell, we've got a vehicle that's spinning

out right now, actually, just getting calls in to chp saying it's really going there on the shoulder so keeping an eye on that. as of right now, that is not a blocking situation. also, southbound 101 ramp to tully road was another crash involving a car that lost control, hit another vehicle, sounds like that one is close to clearing and just hearing about a new b.a.r.t. issue, some type of problem on the tracks, ten-minute delay on the richmond line in the fremont and millbrae directions and those problems are around el cerito. next traffic update coming up. right now, there are still at least two correction officers being held hostage at a delaware prison, almost 24 hours after being captured, and i want to show you the scene here that we were watching just a few moments ago. this is at the state's maximum security prison in smirna just a few minutes ago, and authorities now continue to negotiate the release of those two hostages.

today's storm is level 1. that means light rain so keep an umbrella handy and drive safely. track today's storm any time on the abc7 news app. download it now. welcome back. there are new dmv numbers that show that the self-driving cars seem to be improving at a rapid rate. the data counted the amount of times humans had to take control of a self-driving car for safety reasons. google's self-driving car led the way averaging more than 5,000 miles between each human intervention. nissan's self-driving car showed a big improvement and averaged 14 miles per intervention in 2014 and that number now up to 246 miles. the days of getting free access to the tsa's precheck screening program are coming to

an end. the tsa says it's going to significantly reduce access to those who haven't signed up and paid for the expedited security screening program. the agency has been randomly offering some unenrolled passengers access as part of a promotion. it doesn't want the expedited screening lines to get too long so now it's cutting you off. the agency says more than 12 million travelers have already enrolled in the program and these changes go into effect this month. let's than 1/10 inch of rain in walnut creek this morning but you can see 680, whether you're going south or north, it's wet and raining right now. driving is going to be poor with the heaviest rain in the morning. if you're going to be out and about, have that umbrella handy like that smart person, you'll be dodging drops all day and it's going to be wet and breezy if you're on the water. winds will continue until 3:00 tomorrow morning. so far, no reports of downed trees or power lines but it's possible. hydroplane still my biggest concern. high amounts there, trees, moderate, power outages,
