an umbrella. >> yes, you do, reggie. you'll want to keep it all the way through wednesday. let's look at some of the heavier rain. moving across to san mateo and all the way over to hayward right now so that san mateo bridge is about to get a lot wetter. in fact, look at the waves of light, even the few moderate showers out there. that will be the case through the morning hours. and it's going to be breezy as we'll morph over to waves of showers by noon. we'll keep periods of showers going through 4:00 and we'll round out your 12 hour day planner with more showers at 7:00. alexis? noticing a theme there this morning, mike. and yeah, we've got a lot of wet pavement out there, taking a look at the golden gate bridge. if you're coming from the north bay, you look okay at this point, although you do have that wet pavement north of here, though. we've hat several crashes in the novato area so more details on that in a few minutes. highway 4 to the maze, 24 minutes, about 14 across the bay bridge and san francisco to sfo is still in the green. about three pretty significant

crashes working right now. next traffic update coming up around 6:10. new this morning, president trump is threatening to take away federal money from uc berkeley because of last night's violent protests. >> here's what he tweeted this morning. "if uc berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view, no federal funds?" abc # news reporter amy hollyfield is in berkeley with how all this started. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. let me show you the damage that extends further from campus. it didn't just happen on campus. this is on shattuck at center street. the wells fargo here, the atms were busted last night, so were the windows. you can see they have patched those up. here's a look at what it looked like on campus, some angry demonstrators set fire to a generator. this happened outside the student union building. there were about 1500 people who turned out last night to protest milo yiannopoulos. he was coming to campus to speak, but protesters showed up

and called him racist and sexist. >> if he'd like to engage in a reasonable debate, that's one thing but that's not his aim, never has been. he's here to make money off of spewing hate. >> reporter: yiannopoulos's speech was canceled because of the protests. he was safely escorted off campus and later the breitbart editor responded, saying the left cannot tolerate free speech. police tell us one person was arrested. no injuries were reported. they did have the campus on lockdown last night. they lifted that late last night so they do expect classes to go on as normal. reporting live in berkeley, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. and the protesters blamed for sparking the violence last nights are members of a group called the black bloc. they dress in black, hide their faces, often infiltrate peaceful protests and turn them violent using tactics like smashing windows and setting fires. the group identifies themselves as anarchists. they've been around for years,

dating bab to the 1970s. as you just saw, these peaceful protests really got out of control in berkeley last night. the question this morning, was it really necessary, and did this just go too far? look at this video. a man with a bloody nose. he was protesting for free speech last night and believes that it even protects controversial people like the speaker that was supposed to be on campus. >> i think part of free speech is hearing opinions that you don't believe in. >> yes, free speech should be allowed, but where do we draw the line when it crosses into hate speech? >> and berkeley is said to be the birthplace of the free speech movement. >> when milo yiannopoulos finally got to a safe location, he went on facebook live to express his thoughts about last night's protest. >> it turns out that the progressive left, the social justice left, the feminist, black lives matter left, the hard left which has become so utterly antithetical to free speech in the last few years, is

and many other roads in the santa cruz mountains. mudslides and debris blocked roads for hours and sometimes even days. there's a wind advisory in effect through early tomorrow morning. wind gusts may reach 40 to 50 miles per hour. no reports so far from the chp about closed roads right now but clearly we are not getting as much rain as we saw on those storms in january. there was a crash earlier this morning at about 4:30 but that has been cleaned up by the chp. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, matt keller. the battle is starting on capitol hill for the supreme court. neil gorsuch walked the halls of the capital, visiting senators who will decide his fate. back at the white house, president trump urged republican senate leader mitch mcconnell to do whatever it takes to get judge gorsuch confirmed. president trump told senator mcconnell to use what's called the nuclear option. some democrats are vowing to

block him. several house democrats are calling on president trump to remove chief strategist steve bannon from his post on the national security council. in a letter to the president, the house democrats expressed concern about bannon's past political statements and actions. they say, "national security depends on the full understanding that our nation's interests not political administration's decision making." that breaking news right now, a huge search underway for a naturalville police officer that inside of a river while trying to rescue someone and i want to show you these pictures from the search. the couplerland river runs through the area there. i want to show you the latest tweet from the nashville pd saying, we asking for nashville's thoughts and prayers for this 18-year veteran and some more details to tell you that they were rescuing a woman who relatives said wanted to commit suicide. she was actually starting to cooperate with them, but her car

all right, we'll start with live doppler 7. one of oufr hot spots, you can see heading through castro valley right on 580 there and heading up crow canyon, dublin canyon road, ponding on the roadways possibly developing there, hillsboro up to millbrae avenue and on 101 and 280 and moving now to pacifica through daly city and heading over towards south san francisco and 101 and brisbane, also some ponding developing there. windy in areas above 1,000 feet. so far haven't heard of any downed trees or power lines but it's possible.

temperatures, 49, low to mid 50s for most of the south bay, upper 40s to mid 50s for most of us. sfo not reporting delays but they will because it is wet. i'll let you know, @mikeniccoabc7. also know we've got rain the next three days all the way through next week. i'll show you coming up next. taking a look at traffic this morning, we've had a lot of spinout crashes and then in this situation, the vehicle that spun out was hit by several more vehicles so taking you back up to novato, southbound 101 past 37, still trying to clear a crash that involved several vehicles. one of those landed on its side as well so that's the reason why this is taking so long. you've got about a three-mile delay now and you are crawling at just about 7 miles per hour average. also another vehicle went off the roadway, flipped over, westbound 80, blocking that onramp in that area. not seeing any delay on the main line. fremont, southbound 880, another multi-car crash that is blocking the fast lane right now.

santa cruz police are asking for your help solving this cold case that spans more than three decades. it involves that young woman you see on the left, cory le master. police are looking for information of anyone who may have had contact with her as she traveled through the santa cruz area in 1993. her decomposed body was found the following year. at first, officials could not identify her and they created the model you see on the right. police say the 17-year-old was traveling along california's coast from pacifica to santa cruz when she dies.

many t-mobile customers will soon be receiving a refund check. don't get too crazy, it's not that much. they mailed out nearly $20 million in refunds. it stems from a settlement reached with t-mobile more than two years ago. more than 617,000 customers had cramming charges added to their bill, and those are unwanted $9.99 monthly fees for horoscopes, sports scores, celebrity gossip, that sort of thing. the average refund is about $32 per check. >> all right. >> so it's not nothing. >> not a whole lot. >> not going to buy a new outfit today. there are some wet roads out there. let's check in with alexis smith with traffic. has not been an easy morning on the roads here. several crashes to talk about. i'm going to head back to one we've had since about 5:00 this morning. northbound state route 85 ramp to 87 is still blocked and that happened at 5:00 a.m. so, you can see that really is spilling over on to the main line of 85. and we've got several other incidents too so i'll highlight some of those coming up in just

ones. in fact, the heaviest of the storm is over, that's why i've downgraded it to a 1 on our storm impact scale with light showers and breezy conditions and variable driving conditions because look, waves of light showers. you don't see any yellows and oranges after we get through the morning commute. through noon, nothing. and into the evening hours, pretty much nothing as far as moderate to heavy. it comes in while most of us are sleeping from 2:00 to 7:00 again tonight. now, all this is heading up to the sierra. so we've got that winter storm warning until 4:00 saturday morning so moderate to heavy snow, 1 to 3 feet from past levels and up. gusty blowing snow and snow-covered roads, tough getting up there until saturday afternoon. your best chance is to leave now with some of the lighter snow falling today. heavier snow will fall tomorrow. a 1 for thursday, today, friday, saturday, sunday, monday, and tuesday. not like january. but still, wet for the next seven days. alexis, how about that tahoe report? the toyota tahoe report, we've got some tougher conditions as mike said under a winter storm warning right now.

6:24 and new details. take a look at this terrible crash caught on video. a driver was speeding down an interstate in georgia when a trooper tried to pull him over. the driver sped off and he crashed into a gas station sign. a little girl was tossed out of the window and police now say she wasn't wearing a a seat belt. we do not know her condition this morning. it turns out the man behind the wheel faces a driving without a license charge, several counts of forgery in a credit card scam as well as charges in another unrelated case. >> that's just so scary to watch. three of the world's biggest retailers are teaming up to fight a proposed income statistics. it's known as a border tax adjustment and it would prevent retailers from being able to deduct the cost of imported goods from their taxes. walmart, target, and macy's say this could severely hurt their business and force them to jack up their prices. the retailers hope their alliance will steal congressional republicans away from that move. it is time now to ask finney

we've also got on alameda in down towards the airport in oakland, a nice shower there, some ponding on the roadways around broadway. in fact, i wanted to show you the bay bridge toll plaza also because that's where we're seeing some steady light rain right now. temperatures flirteding with 60. steady rain this morning becoming periods of showers for the rest of the day. let's see how it's affecting the morning commute with alexis. well, it's having a negative impact as you would guess. we've got a lot of crashes this morning, tough driving conditions. a lot of that road spray kicking up as you can see here for the golden gate bridge drive. north of there, three separate issues in the novato area. only one currently blocking. this is southbound 101 past 37, all started with a vehicle that spun out and lost control and was hit by several other vehicles and one of the cars that hit that on its side. we've got heavy traffic for about three miles behind that. couple other pretty significant crashes to talk about coming up. the protests last night in berkeley got so heated, they got so violent, those images have

now gone around the world. >> this morning, the clean-up is underway. let's get right to abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in berkeley. >> reporter: hi, good morning, natasha. even president trump is issuing a statement about what happened here in berkeley. he's tweeting this morning, if uc berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view, all caps, no federal funds, question mark. implying that he might take away federal money. people here in berkeley reacting here as well. here's what they're seeing as they wake up this morning, damage all over the downtown and on campus. we've got some twitter video that shows people breaking windows. you can see them destroying businesses. these are banks that were destroyed, also a starbucks, notice the vandals were all dressed in black. the university has condemned the violence, saying this is not a proud moment for the campus. people who are surveying the damage this morning, we're seeing them shake their heads

and enable push alerts. we have been pushing out some this morning, if i can get it up, there it is, about what's going on at berkeley and you'll get those updates as they happen. new this morning in the north bay, chp investigating what appears to be a deadly hit-and-run accident on highway 101 in novato. the body of an elderly man was found in lanes onramp at atherton avenue. officers found car parts on the freeway. they believe a small light gray or silver car may have been involved. investigators hope someone saw something and may give them a call. and mountain view police need your help finding a missing 12-year-old boy this morning. this is christopher moreno. he was last seen around 2:00 p.m. yesterday at grand middle school in mountain view on castro street. detectives say he was wearing a white sweatshirt with the word walden on the front. anyone with any information about christopher eefs whereabouts is asked to call the police department. the san francisco police department is suspending ties with the fbi's joint terrorism

task force. the announcement comes amid growing concerns of spying on muslim americans by the new trump administration. the ten-year jttf agreement was set to expire in march and that's when the policy could be revised. >> donald trump was very clear that he was going to be targeting muslims, he wants mass muslim surveillance, part of the work done with the fbi jttf could feed into this horrible muslim registry they're talking about. >> the fbi released this statement. "the san francisco jttf continues to be committed to working with our state, local and federal law enforcement entities to uphold the constitution and protect the american people in all a jttf partnership could be reinstated with review by the police commission at a public meeting. the relesion of an oakland police department audit is revealing new details about the department's recruitment process. the report looked at 78 officers from misconduct cases and it found 17% of them had been fired from a previous job. nearly half of the officers were not hired by at least one other law enforcement agency after

going through their application process. the majority had failed oral and written tests. mayor libby schaaf requested the audit last may. this morning, san rafael police are warning residents about a rash of home burglaries. all of the burglaries happen during the day when homeowners would be at work. the burglars took jewelry, other valuables and other easily concealed items. it appears the burglars watched the residents leave their house and in some cases hit multiple houses on the same street so they're asking residents to be vigilant about vehicles and people they don't recognize in their neighborhoods. morgan hill police are warning about a rash of car burglars burglaries, burglars have broken into 20 cars in just the cast week. there's a photo posted on the department's facebook page. police are reminding drivers to park in well-lit areas, lock the doors and don't keep anything that's even remotely valuable in that car. you'll soon have a chance to weigh in on oakland unify's school district superintendent search. an online survey will launch on

monday. the school board also plans to hold several group input sessions. members want to know the qualities you're looking for in the district's next leader. the board will start taking applications for the job february 27 and hopes to have the new superintendent in place by may 10. if your commute takes you through the south bay, here's one of the dryer and easier commutes, 101 and 880. look at that traffic flowing through there a little faster than the rest of us. a little bit south of that where 101 meets up and starts to head into morgan hill and gilroy, you can see some light to moderate rain there. in fact, one of them, real heavy right now, heading over towards basking ridge avenue. let's take a look at what's going on in oakland. you can see right here, moving from 580 to 13 towards monterey boulevard, piedmont, moderate rain that is falling in isolated areas this morning. winds are going to be a mainstay throughout the day. south of 15 to 30 in areas where you don't see yellow.

so far, no downed trees or power lines but we'll keep an eye on it. this is on the richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge. you can see light to moderate rain so poor driving, especially this morning, your activity planner, dodging drops, so have an umbrella ready like this person if you're out and about and on the water, it's going to be wet and breezy this morning, not as wet but still breezy as we head into the evening hours. hour by hour look at where the rain is going in the next seven days are going to be wet in my accuweather 7 day forecast. alexis. got several issues to get to, including a new crash on the san mateo bridge, westbound side of 92, not sure if that truck on the left-hand shoulder with its hazards on was involved but we are hearing that the left lane is blocked right around the toll plaza so that certainly could be involved and yeah, you are slow on 92 and then coming down on 880 as well. another problem, state route 92, san mateo road, if you are trying to get to or from half moon bay, big problem. just issued a sig alert here. tree is down and blocking all lanes eastbound and westbound. pickup truck did hit that. it sounds like that driver is

threatening action against cal this morning after protests turned violent last night. he tweeted this, "if uc berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view" and then in all caps, no federal funds. that question is causing a lot of concern this morning, but last night, students and officials with campus police were quick to point out that it was not cal students that turned so violent and caused all the damage. they believed it was a group of black bloc group which is actually known for dressing head to toe in black, face covered, and creating chaos at events that started more peacefully. they began throwing molotov cocktails and picking up barricades and throwing them. those were not our students. that's not our students' behavior. >> cal students protested peacefully for several hours over the planned appearance of self-proclaimed internet troll milo yiannopoulos but once it get out of the control, the
