violent protests erupting at uc berkeley. the campus locked down as more than a thousand rallied against the appearance of a controversial editor from breitbart, milo yiannopoulos. they escalated and the speech was canceled and president trump weighed in again. kayna whitworth has all the latest from berkeley. >> reporter: good morning. it was a terrifying night. campus police issuing a shelter in place order after college republicans invited milo yiannopoulos to speak. now, behind me this is a police generator that was knocked over and set on fire when these protests turned into a riot. overnight, mayhem on campus. the university of california-berkeley erupting in flames as over a thousand came out to protest an appearance by the self-described right wing internet troll milo yiannopoulos. >> we will not tolerate racism or sexism or hate crimes and violence. he is a fascist and berkeley did not welcome him. >> reporter: at least six people injured including this trump

speech. >> thank you, kayna. president trump escalating tensions overseas. this time australia on twitter. this after recent heated phone call with the prime minister there. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has all the details. >> reporter: good morning from australia to now iran, the president is on a twitter spree and he is not mincing words, diplomacy in 140 characters or less. overnight president trump swearing in rex tillerson as the nation's top diplomat. >> this is where you were meant to be, right here, today at this crossroads in history. >> reporter: but just a few hours later taking diplomacy into his own hands tweeting, do you believe it? the obama administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from australia. why? i will study this dumb deal. that deal aiming to resettle refugees not undocumented immigrants from two pacific

islands into the u.s. trump discussed the deal during a 25-minute phone call with the australian prime minister on saturday. hours after his executive order banning some refugees into the u.s. indefinitely. the call with one of america's closest allies reportedly ending abruptly when turnbull pressed trump to honor the deal. >> i can assure you the relationship is very strong, but as australians know me very well, i stand up for australia in every forum, public or private. >> reporter: a diplomatic shake-up from this new white house now also taking on iran. national security adviser michael flynn in a surprise briefing room appearance on wednesday delivering this stern warning. >> as of today, we are officially putting iran on notice. >> reporter: flynn saying all options are on the table after iran's test of yet another ballistic missile and what officials call other provocative actions.

>> iran continues to threaten u.s. friends and allies in the region. >> reporter: flynn did not take questions during the briefing but the president did take to twitter in a series of tweets. this morning one saying iran has been formally put on notice for firing a ballistic missile. should have been thankful for the terrible deal the u.s. made with them and iran sending out a response saying iran does not need permission from any country to defend itself. robin. >> thank you. going to turn to abc chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz. so much to talk about, martha. let's start with iran. what are you hearing there? >> reporter: well, donald trump made no secret of wanting to toughen the relationship, robin, with iran, even as a candidate saying if the iranians made a gesture to our sailors in the persian gulf where there have definitely been provocative moves in the past they wilill b shot out of the water. he said that last september. and now iran has made a provocative move with its

ballistic missile test and they're certainly making bold moves in iraq. so the statement by flynn and the late night tweet by the president should not be surprising. but what does it mean in terms of a response? the white house says they are looking at several options as cecilia said and did not rule out military options which doesn't mean they're going to make a military move but iran now knows the gun is on the table. >> late night tweets continuing this morning. let's move on to australia. what are you hearing about that reported contentious phone call between president trump and the prime minister of australia? >> reporter: well, the difference here, robin, as you know, australia is an ally, but ally or adversary its prime minister just learned firsthand what the rest of the world is quickly realizing, president trump is like no president before him. he does not use the delicate language of diplomacy, even if you are considered a friend. and this deal does contradict

what the president wants in his temporary refugee ban since these refugees australia wants to send here are largely from iraq and iran. >> there was a moment from yesterday when the president and his daughter ivanka making the trip to the air foe base to see the fallen s.e.a.l. there, the fallen navy s.e.a.l. that was quite a moment. >> reporter: very somber occasion for any president, robin. he did not announce the trip to dover beforehand. but went with daughter ivanka to the dignified transfer for the remains of navy s.e.a.l. william ryan owens, owens' family did not want cameras there but we know president trump did speak to the family at dover and he did call them over the weekend, as well. owens killed, of course, in that raid in yemen. >> that's right, all right, martha, thank you. more now on the president's pick for the supreme court. judge neil gorsuch. with democrats promising to filibuster his nomination he told republicans to do whatever it takes to get him confirmed. take a look.

>> if we end up with that, i would say if you can, do it. because that would be an absolute shame if a man of this quality was caught up in the web so i would say it's up to mitch but i would say go for it. >> mary bruce on capitol hill, jon karl at the white house. mary, let me begin with you talking about mitch mcconnell, the senate republican leader. what's at play, this nuclear option would basically change the senate rules so he could get confirmed with just republican votes, 51 votes. >> reporter: george, the pressure this morning on mitch mcconnell is huge. the president with those two words, go nuclear, telling him to do whatever he has to do, even change those rules if necessary to prevent democrats from blocking his nominee. now, mcconnell has not revealed his next move but he's known as a stickler for those rules, not inclined to change them but democrats may leave him little option here, chuck schumer is saying he has serious concerns about gorsuch and many democrats already vowing to oppose him.

>> and, jon, on that the democrats are caught in a little bit of a box right there as well. do they really want to go through and push this to the wall and get that change in the rules? >> reporter: well, i'll tell you, the president laying it on the line there yesterday saying that mitch mcconnell should go nuclear if he needs to. actually was not on message for the republicans. they had been trying to say that they could get this through without changing the rules, without using the so-called nuclear option by making the case to democrats that this was a highly qualified nominee, somebody that is beyond reproach as far as the republicans are concerned and only to do that nuclear option if it really came to that. this is a tough battle for both but i can tell you that the republicans were a little bit taken off guard by what the president himself said. >> didn't want it to come to this too soon and the president facing questions about his education secretary nominee betsy devos. the billionaire from michigan and, mary, two important key republican defections there yesterday.

>> reporter: george, betsy devos could be the first confirmation casualty here on capitol hill. two republican senators saying they simply cannot support her. they're the first republicans to come out and oppose one of trump's pick, senator collins from maine and senator murkowski from alaska have serious questions about her lack of experience especially when it comes to the public school system and the kicker here, george, is that this could mean that vice president mike pence might have to be the tiebreaking vote and that would be the first time that a vice president has ever used that power for a confirmation vote. >> that is assuming all other republicans hold the line and, jon karl, white house pretty confident of that. >> reporter: i'm told they have done the whip count and all the other republicans will be there at least right now saying they will support betsy devos and that includes, george, senator and soon-to-be attorney general jeff sessions. democrats had delayed a vote on his confirmation still in the senate. he has not voted. he had said that he would

abstain from voting until he becomes attorney general and then passes the senate seat on so the fact that democrats actually delayed his confirmation is actually meaning that he will be there to cast what would be the decisive vote for betsy devos. >> and, you have this threat from the president this morning, that tweet about the protests at uc berkeley suggesting maybe federal funds could get cut off. could he do that? >> reporter: it's a great question. i don't know the details on that but the threat does not surprise me at all and when the white house sees those images, they think that this actually shows that their opposition is out of control and don't mind that from a political standpoint. >> okay, jon karl, mary bruce, thanks very much. >> to breaking news for our viewers in the west about the tense standoff at a delaware prison wherein mates took four prison employees hostage on wednesday. eva pilgrim has the latest. >> reporter: a tragic end to this nearly 20 hour standoff. prisoners taking control of one

building here at this correctional facility. but early this morning authorities finally finding one prison employee dead, the other three, now released. the prison revolt over. this morning white jump suits face down on the ground after a night of negotiations. authorities getting in. one employee alert and talking, the other found dead. it began when a staff member radioed for assistance in a building that held more than 100 inmates. >> they're at my neck right now with a knife if you don't hurry up and turn these phones on now! >> reporter: prisoners taking four correctional employees hostage. officers responded quickly to the scene and began negotiations to free the hostages. >> tell us how you want them to come out. >> crack the door, let them come out to the middle of the yard. >> at this point officers responded to assist in the facility was placed on lock

down. >> reporter: roads around the prison blocked off. images from above showing heavily armed s.w.a.t. teams gathering in groups in the prison yard. >> everybody is waiting for everybody to come out. everything you asked for is right there for you, man. >> are we moving forward? we're moving forward? >> back i way from the door. >> reporter: prisoners and hostages released and one guard hit with a mop ringer and the other bleeding from stab wounds. the governor of delaware called it a long and difficult day. authorities trying to figure out exactly what happened. what led up to this. they're talking to the hostages who are now free. the prisoners could face charges for the death of that prison employee as well as for the revolt. george and robin. >> thank you eva. we move on to that scare for a plane heading to los angeles. the swissair plane was forced to touch down in canada. david kerley has the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

george. imagine the surprise headed for l.a. and have to land on a remote snowy canadian island because one of the two engines has been shut down. this is what it looked like when the swissair flight bound for los angeles landed on a snowy remote canadian island. >> stuck in this plane for about, what, four hours now, five hours. >> reporter: the swissair flight a boeing 777 with more than 200 on board flying from zurich to l.a. when it diverted to iqaluit island with subzero temperatures. the pilots getting a left engine malfunction message and diverting for safety. >> they told us not to panic. we saw fuel coming out of the wings and it happened fast. the rockiest part was the landing. >> reporter: passenger leroy sanchez said they were forced to wait on the tarmac for more than 12 hours while the temperature outside dipped to minus 18 degrees fahrenheit. >> we don't know where the

rescue plane is, we don't know how far it is. nobody has left the plane. so we're stuck in here. >> reporter: so the mayor of that town wanted to take the passengers for a tour while they were waiting. swissair said no. another aircraft had gotten up there. they're now on their way to new york instead of l.a. swissair says they can get them to their destinations easier from new york than flying them all the way to l.a. >> thanks very much. amy is here with today's other top stories. a big fire overseas. >> devastating picture, thousands of workers running for their lives as a massive fire engulfed a factory complex in the philippines. more than 120 people had been injured. many of them because they were jumping from windows to escape the flames. several at this hour are missing. that factory employs about 15,000 people. new safety inspections were ordered after a deadly fire in a similar factory back in 2015. two high school students in southern california are in

custody accused of plotting a school shooting. police say a parent overheard the 16-year-olds discussing their plans describing their plot as bigger than columbine. investigators say the students had been researching previous school attacks. well, new tensions at the site of that controversial oil pipeline in north dakota. authorities have now arrested 76 protesters who they say built an illegal camp. police say they issued repeated warnings before eventually evicting the group. a scare for fans at a drake concert in london. rapper travis scott was performing when you see, he just fell right into a hole off the stage there. drake quickly helped him out. he is okay and drake then promised a refund to the crowd. and finally all of you bacon lovers out there, no need to panic. despite widespread reports suppliers are at their lowest level in decades the pork industry is assuring us farmers are raising more pigs and there will be enough pork belly out there to meet our insatiable demand to bring home the bacon.

giants cut him last fall and this morning josh brown is asking for another chance. josh brown was at the pinnacle of his career starting kicker for the nfl's new york giants. >> josh brown. >> reporter: he had just fined a $4 million contract but then it all came crashing down for the 14-year veteran. >> 911, what do you report this morning? >> my husband is really upset right now. >> the world now thinks that i beat my wife and i have never hit this woman. i never hit her. not once. >> reporter: brown was arrested in may of 2015 and booked for assault against his wife molly. >> i reached for the phone. i grab the top of the phone. she scream, i back away, she leaves. 35 minces later i'm in handcuffs. >> the deputy says husband grabbed wife's wrist during an argument causing her pain. bruising and a small abrasion. husband was arrested and booked

for assault and he said, quote, i believe that josh assaulted molly. >> that's what he said. >> do you feel you assaulted her. >> no, i did not touch her on the wrist. >> reporter: brown was not charged in the incident but the king county sheriff's office in washington state began an investigation into allegations of abuse by brown of his wife molly and in october of 2016, they released more than 100 pages of documents detailing allegations and seeming admissions of physical, verbal and emotional abuse. >> she claims you were physically violent on more that 20 occasions. >> i dispute it. i absolutely dispute it. >> reporter: included in those documents highly confidential journals filled with personal details. he says he was instructed to write them as part of his marriage therapy at the time. these were your deepest, darkest thoughts and secrets made public.

>> these were the things that you say to yourself and then you burn them. and i didn't. >> he says molly turned those journals over to sheriff's investigators in 2016 years after they were written as part of an investigation. and just days after the journals were made public by the sheriff's office, he was cut from the giants and he's been out of a job since. what did the league know and when? >> the league has known everything. >> you're saying that you're completely honest with the league. are you angry at how they've handled everything. >> the fact that my private things are being used against me, that's hard to swallow. >> talking about your journals. >> i'm talking about my journals. i had to learn all that and write that down in order to heal and now you're telling me i'll be punished for trying to correct the things in my life that needed to be changed. >> reporter: brown's own words, things he never thought would be public had come back to haunt him. you said, quote, i have physically, verbally and emotionally abused my wife molly. >> uh-huh.

>> what do you mean by that? >> i mean i had put my hands on her. i kicked the chair, i held her down. like the holding down was the worst moment in our marriage. i never hit her. i never slapped her. i never choked her. i never did those types of things. >> when you say that you physically abused her, but you didn't hit her how are people supposed to reconcile that, josh? >> it's -- they're not supposed to. what i did was wrong, period. domestic violence is not just physical abuse, we're talking intimidation and threats. the attempt to control, body language, an abuser is going to abuse to a certain degree to acquire some kind of reaction. >> you take responsibility for everything you did and said during your marriage. >> i'm fully accountable. to every bit of it. >> make no excuses. >> none. >> he says he had been actively rehabilitating himself years before that arrest.

>> i spoke publicly about this at men's groups, at churches. this was not something that i necessarily hid. >> what have you lost? >> everything. >> his divorce finalized in december. his career possibly over. and his reputation shattered. what do you have left? >> i have my daughter. that's the best thing in the world. >> his daughter georgia whom he splits custody of with his ex-wife. as for what's next -- >> i want to be able to play again. i want to be able to continue to write this story, continue to be a voice for change. >> is there any room for second, third chances in the nfl? >> maybe. we'll see. if it doesn't happen, i'm fine. >> he says whether or not he deserves another chance is not up for him to decide. we reached out to his ex-wife molly and she is not commenting. >> we heard him say he wants to play again. where does the nfl stand in its investigation?
