good morning, everyone. and happy friday to you. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm linsey davis in for diane. we begin with iran bracing for punishing new u.s. sanctions and possibly much more after testing a ballistic missile. >> yeah, senators from both parties are turning up the pressure, and president trump says he's not ruling out military action. meanwhile, the president is defending a heated phone call with australia's prime minister as lawmakers intervene reassuring that nation that it still has unwavering american support. abc's elizabeth hur is following the overnight developments. she joins us here in new york. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: kendis and linsey, good morning to you. as far as iran is concerned, republican and democratic senators are coming together on this one saying they're concerned, and president trump says he agrees, and he's not ruling anything out. from talking tough to taking action. >> that's what i do. i fix things. we're going to straighten it out. >> reporter: president trump ready to impose new sanctions against iran. >> iran continues to threaten u.s. friends and allies in the

region. >> reporter: the white house first put iran on notice earlier this week after iran tested another ballistic missile. iranian officials fired back saying they don't need permission to defend themselves. now, president trump says taking military action is also an option. >> nothing is off the table. >> reporter: the president defiant saying the u.s. will straighten out the world taking on countries like mexico, iran and even one of america's closest friends, australia. >> i called the australian ambassador to reinforce to him our commitment to australia and our relationship. >> reporter: senator mccain trying to mend fences after "the washington post" reported president trump told the australian prime minister on the phone saturday that of the four calls he had that day with foreign leaders, this was the worst call by far. slamming an agreement australia made with president obama to resettle some 1,200 refugees in the u.s.

on twitter calling it a dumb deal, but later on camera the president sounded more diplomatic. >> a previous administration does something, you have to respect that. >> i think the president should sleep more and tweet less. >> reporter: and that was senator graham, who is among the 20 senators from both parties who signed a letter urging president trump to hold iran accountable. the white house has not yet released any details on those sanctions, but, again, that announcement could come later today. kendis and linsey. >> elizabeth, thank you. now to what appears to be a slight change in tone from this administration to israel. the jewish state saw the start of the trump presidency as a green light to build more settlements in the disputed territories. >> but now the trump administration is saying that might not be good for the peace process. the subject will be on the agenda when prime minister benjamin netanyahu visits the president later on this month. and yet another foreign relations surprise at the united nations. new u.s. ambassador nikki haley blasting russia for the recent

violence in ukraine. she said sanctions imposed on russia by the obama administration would remain in place until russia returns crimea. now, as a candidate, the president hinted that he might recognize russia's 2014 annexation of crimea. back here at home, those violent protests at uc berkeley may lead to a major financial hit from the federal government. president trump hinted on twitter about withholding federal funds from the university after campus protests escalated into rioting wednesday night. in the senate a rare early morning vote to advance the nomination of betsy devos for education secretary. lawmakers have been flooded with calls and e-mails from constituents looking to block the nomination. and republican senators susan collins and lisa murkowski said they plan to vote against devos citing her lack of experience but vice president mike pence was planning to break an expected tie with a yes vote. there's a bit of head scratching going on this morning following a statement by trump

adviser kellyanne conway on msnbc. conway referred to a bowling green massacre to justify president trump's ban on refugees and immigrants from seven predominantly muslim countries. listen. >> i bet it's brand-new information to people that president obama had a six-month ban on the iraqi refugee program after two iraqis came here to this country, were radicalized and then were the masterminds behind the bowling green massacre. people don't know that because it didn't get covered. >> it didn't get covered because it never happened. all right, giving conway the benefit of the doubt here, however, she may have meant an incident in 2011 involving two iraqi nationals who were later indicted for allegedly having ties to attacks against u.s. troops in iraq. those two men lived in bowling green, kentucky. and we're following breaking news from paris where the louvre museum has been evacuated. police say a soldier guarding the entrance opened fire on a suspected attacker. the man was allegedly carrying a knife and reports say he was

trying to enter the museum with a suitcase. the interior ministry describing it as serious. police are not calling this a terror attack but france, as you know, has been on edge since recent attacks in paris as well as nice. california is getting some much needed help with its five-year drought. on the radar more storms are coming off the pacific. rain is expected in northern california and could reach as far south as l.a. the sierra will pile on more snow, and there are winter weather advisories in oregon and washington. well, some showers in the forecast for sunday in houston where they're expecting twice as many people in town as there are tickets for sunday's super bowl game. we're looking at a live picture here at nrg stadium, a little quiet at this hour understandably where all 71,000 seats are sold out, of course, but there's also a huge indoor nfl theme park. player and celebrity sightings and sold out concerts by bruno mars and taylor swift. >> the big pop music performance this weekend, however, is, of course, the

heading to court this morning in new york. guzman was initially set to appear by video, but his lawyers argued his absence would make it look as if he's too dangerous to be brought to the courtroom. guzman has repeatedly escaped from mexican prisons. he was turned over to u.s. authorities after they agreed not to seek the death penalty. the ceo of uber has quit an economic panel advising president trump under pressure after thousands of customers deleted their accounts in the wake of president trump's travel ban. travis kalanick said in an internal memo that joining the group was not meant to be an endorsement of the president or his agenda. nordstrom says it's dropping ivanka trump's fashion line because of declining sales. the department store chain says it typically cuts about 10% of its brands every season to make room for new stock. the move comes during a week's long campaign called grab your wallet, a boycott of retailers carrying ivanka or donald trump merchandise. the parent company of social media blockbuster snapchat has officially filed its paperwork for a $3 billion initial public

recently moved to colorado from texas where he taught martial arts and once spoke to parishioners at a local church. >> i testify that there's only one god worthy of worship and that muhammad is his prophet. >> reporter: cummings was already on law enforcement radar thanks to a denver mosque he visited in december. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> and clayton will have more on that later on today on "good morning america." some frightening moments overnight as an explosion rocked a california restaurant. police say a man threw a homemade explosive device into the cheesecake factory in pasadena sending panicked diners running. heavy smoke filled the restaurant, but no one was injured. the suspect managed to get away. witnesses say he was dressed in all black. the war of words is heating up between president trump and his "apprentice" replacement arnold schwarzenegger. >> so, the president used the national prayer breakfast to pray for arnold and the dismal ratings on "the apprentice" this season since the terminator took the helm, but arnold fired back his own zinger and a challenge. >> they hired a big, big movie star, arnold schwarzenegger, to

60. hets find out about the morning commute. wet pavement for you. here's a look at live doppler 7 on top of the traffic maps. westbound highway 24, we've got a multi-car crash at least one lane is blocked right now. i'm going to work on some more details and have another update in just a few but even at this early hour, already seeing those delays build. well, terrible flooding. you will remember scenes like this one last month on highway 37 near 101 with our wet forecast, people are keeping an eye on that area. >> there is a plan to fix the road but it comes at a big price. amy hollyfield is live for us in novato. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning. this is a hot spot to watch out for. it's raining right now. has been for a while, so this is a spot to watch out. so far, everything looks okay, but look at what this looked like last month when the rains hit highway 37 was just under water. this is a connecter from vallejo

to highway 101 up in marin county. it's very well traveled area. well, a solution may be on the way for this trouble spot. according to the marin "independent journal," caltrans is looking at a solution but it would cost $8 million. they're talking about bringing the pavement up. some of it has sank through the years. replacing the drainage pipes with larger pipes and then also doing more pumping through here. one idea that's being kicked around is turning this into a toll road, so people can help pay for these improvements. be interested to know what you commuters think about that idea. they've got about 40,000 vehicles that travel this highway every day, so a lot of customers that they are serving, and a lot of customers who could help pay for this service. reporting live in novato, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. and check out also in marin, the wet weather bringing this tree down. it got caught on some power
