region. >> reporter: the white house first put iran on notice earlier this week after iran tested another ballistic missile. iranian officials fired back saying they don't need permission to defend themselves. now, president trump says taking military action is also an option. >> nothing is off the table. >> reporter: the president defiant saying the u.s. will straighten out the world taking on countries like mexico, iran and even one of america's closest friends, australia. >> i called the australian ambassador to reinforce to him our commitment to australia and our relationship. >> reporter: senator mccain trying to mend fences after "the washington post" reported president trump told the australian prime minister on the phone saturday that of the four calls he had that day with foreign leaders, this was the worst call by far. slamming an agreement australia made with president obama to resettle some 1,200 refugees in the u.s.

on twitter calling it a dumb deal, but later on camera the president sounded more diplomatic. >> a previous administration does something, you have to respect that. >> i think the president should sleep more and tweet less. >> reporter: and that was senator graham, who is among the 20 senators from both parties who signed a letter urging president trump to hold iran accountable. the white house has not yet released any details on those sanctions, but, again, that announcement could come later today. kendis and linsey. >> elizabeth, thank you. now to what appears to be a slight change in tone from this administration to israel. the jewish state saw the start of the trump presidency as a green light to build more settlements in the disputed territories. >> but now the trump administration is saying that might not be good for the peace process. the subject will be on the agenda when prime minister benjamin netanyahu visits the president later on this month. and yet another foreign relations surprise at the united nations. new u.s. ambassador nikki haley blasting russia for the recent

violence in ukraine. she said sanctions imposed on russia by the obama administration would remain in place until russia returns crimea. now, as a candidate, the president hinted that he might recognize russia's 2014 annexation of crimea. back here at home, those violent protests at uc berkeley may lead to a major financial hit from the federal government. president trump hinted on twitter about withholding federal funds from the university after campus protests escalated into rioting wednesday night. in the senate a rare early morning vote to advance the nomination of betsy devos for education secretary. lawmakers have been flooded with calls and e-mails from constituents looking to block the nomination. and republican senators susan collins and lisa murkowski said they plan to vote against devos citing her lack of experience but vice president mike pence was planning to break an expected tie with a yes vote. there's a bit of head scratching going on this morning following a statement by trump

adviser kellyanne conway on msnbc. conway referred to a bowling green massacre to justify president trump's ban on refugees and immigrants from seven predominantly muslim countries. listen. >> i bet it's brand-new information to people that president obama had a six-month ban on the iraqi refugee program after two iraqis came here to this country, were radicalized and then were the masterminds behind the bowling green massacre. people don't know that because it didn't get covered. >> it didn't get covered because it never happened. all right, giving conway the benefit of the doubt here, however, she may have meant an incident in 2011 involving two iraqi nationals who were later indicted for allegedly having ties to attacks against u.s. troops in iraq. those two men lived in bowling green, kentucky. and we're following breaking news from paris where the louvre museum has been evacuated. police say a soldier guarding the entrance opened fire on a suspected attacker. the man was allegedly carrying a knife and reports say he was

trying to enter the museum with a suitcase. the interior ministry describing it as serious. police are not calling this a terror attack but france, as you know, has been on edge since recent attacks in paris as well as nice. california is getting some much needed help with its five-year drought. on the radar more storms are coming off the pacific. rain is expected in northern california and could reach as far south as l.a. the sierra will pile on more snow, and there are winter weather advisories in oregon and washington. well, some showers in the forecast for sunday in houston where they're expecting twice as many people in town as there are tickets for sunday's super bowl game. we're looking at a live picture here at nrg stadium, a little quiet at this hour understandably where all 71,000 seats are sold out, of course, but there's also a huge indoor nfl theme park. player and celebrity sightings and sold out concerts by bruno mars and taylor swift. >> the big pop music performance this weekend, however, is, of course, the

to highway 101 up in marin county. it's very well traveled area. well, a solution may be on the way for this trouble spot. according to the marin "independent journal," caltrans is looking at a solution but it would cost $8 million. they're talking about bringing the pavement up. some of it has sank through the years. replacing the drainage pipes with larger pipes and then also doing more pumping through here. one idea that's being kicked around is turning this into a toll road, so people can help pay for these improvements. be interested to know what you commuters think about that idea. they've got about 40,000 vehicles that travel this highway every day, so a lot of customers that they are serving, and a lot of customers who could help pay for this service. reporting live in novato, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. and check out also in marin, the wet weather bringing this tree down. it got caught on some power
