also, something to think about, the wet weather. >> yeah, maybe a red umbrella to match your outfit this morning. that would be nice. hi, evg. remember yesterday we talked about this storm would have a little bit more rain and come in a little bit later and here it is. you can see it on san mateo right there, burling gaim and just about to move into los altos, sunnyvale, palo alto, expected to look like this. check out the bay bridge toll plaza. notice how it's raining pretty heavily and coming down sideways because there's a breeze. heaviest rain now. by noon through 7:00, it will become scattered to isolated but let's worry about now and talk about the commute with alexis. yeah, not going to be the smoothest one, i'm guessing and yeah, it is really coming down right now for that bay bridge commute. on top of that, we have a high wind advisory issued by chp so wet and windy and we have several crashes as you would imagine. five to six vehicles involved in this one in san ramon, southbound 680 before crow canyon, three left lanes are

blocked and two people are having to be transported due to injuries so keeping an eye on that one, right now about a mile and a half backup. and we are watching another round of storms hitting the santa cruz mountains pretty hard. >> we're not talking so much about the rain this time but about the amount it is costing to fix problems caused by all the wet weather. abc7 news reporter matt keller live for us along highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: good morning, reggie aqui, and i am actually standing in the rain and we've got some wind up here in the mountains and also in the valley. when i was driving this morning, you had to have both hands on the wheel. i'm going to walk through some of this mud here. it's kind of damp up here in the mountains and then when you get all the way up here, you can see the grass here kind of blowing in the wind and i'm going to feel like a golfer here as i grab some grass and you can just see it's blowing away from me and really, these wind gusts are going to be up to 40 miles per hour up here in the mountains and the downpours are going to be intense as well and when you're driving up here in the

santa cruz mountains, you really never know what you're going to run into before and after a storm. this massive tree branch fell yesterday afternoon. i just checked the chp traffic website and it shows it's still closed a hard closure there. price tag to fix everything up here in the mountains is big. the director of public works for santa cruz county says more than $20 million in road damage has been done and the county is waiting for financial help for the state and federal governments. >> i've talked to a lot of different public works directors that are saying, how many millions have you got? we're probably the worst in santa cruz, one of the worst counties. we just took a direct hit. >> reporter: be careful driving out there, whether you're in the santa cruz mountains or anywhere else in the bay area. this new video from redwood city, downpours will hit you and you add in the winds and it could make it very dangerous to be out there on the roads. 17 is always a big issue whenever there's a big storm out there but i just checked the chp traffic website, and it shows it's clear right now. reporting live in the santa cruz

mountains, matt keller, abc7 news. matt, thank you. we first told you about the strange mystery surpding the death of a berkeley couple last week, valley and roger and their two cats were found dead inside their apartment. officials want their neighbors to evacuate their homes for 24 hours. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian reports on why that's causing controversy for some. >> reporter: so are you going to leave? residents in this four pleks are anxious wondering what to do after receiving this notice. unit number 4 is where the bodies of roger and valley morash and their two cats were found. a detective wants all tenants to turn their heaters on nonstop and highly recommend that you stay out of your apartment for this 24-hour period. >> i'm just nervous. i'm stressed out every day. i just really wish that the detective would return our calls

and communicate more with us as to what's going on. >> reporter: no one returned my call either. very little information has been released since the morashs died that day. everyone in the building was tested for spiked carbon monoxide levels. since then, speculation has run rampant here. >> it's probably co, so the question is, what's the source of the co? well, furnaces are the number one cause of carbon monoxide poisoning. >> reporter: since this is not considered a mandatory evacuation, neither the building owner nor the police department will pay for the tenants' 24-hour relocation. in berkeley, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. as uc berkeley continues to clean up after violent protests, we are hearing from a woman who was attacked not once but two times. >> you probably saw her on our news yesterday. she was pepper sprayed while our reporter wayne freedman was interviewing her and our camera was rolling.

u.s. first put iran on notice earlier this week after iran tested a ballistic missile. iranian officials fired back saying they don't need permission to defend themselves. now president trump says nothing is off the table, including taking military action. and this morning, the trump administration has removed a minor sanction against russia. the sanction prevented american companies from doing more than $5,000 worth of business with moscow's federal security service in a year. it had the unintended consequence of not allowing u.s. firms to pay trade-related costs to russia. the sanction was put into effect during the last weeks of the obama administration. president trump is also taking a strong stance on a tax rule involving churches and in his words, the president promises to destroy an amendment that blocks churches from engaging in political campaign activity. currently, if churches break that rule, they will lose their tax exempt status. at a prayer breakfast yet, mr. trump said freedom of religion is a sacred right and he wants representatives of

faith to speak without fear of retribution. he added that religious freedom is under threat everywhere in the u.s. a new round in the war of words this morning between president trump and former california governor arnold schwarzenegger. >> jessica at the live desk with the president's latest punch. >> here is the tweet he sent out first this morning. he says, yes, arnoldrd arnold schwarzenegger did a really bad job as governor of california and even wort on "the apprentice" but at least he tried hard. yesterday at the national prayer breakfast, president trump jokingly said folks should pray for schwarzenegger because of bad ratings on the show. he took over from trump and schwarzenegger fired back on social media saying he was happy to switch jobs with the president so the americans could sleep comfortably again, referencing his time as california's governor so this morning with the latest tweet, the battle continues. i'll keep tracking it. i'll let you know if schwarzenegger responds. happening today, san francisco's democratic

east and heading over towards hayward and in fact, here sts weather window and you can see the drops developing. looks a lot wetter than i had edit just a few minutes ago when we opened this weather window. so let me talk about temperatures really quick. because this storm has a nice southerly component to it, we never get really cold. upper 50s to low 60s, today but also tomorrow and again sunday. notice there's some chances of rain tomorrow and sunday, but those are probably still going to be our two driest days as saturday afternoon to sunday afternoon will be dry. all right. once we get past that, another storm rolls in for monday and tuesday and starts to taper into wednesday and one last storm for thursday. i'll give you an hour by hour look at what to expect the next couple of days and how much rain we're going to get out of this system. let's bring in alexis. i'm really noticing a common theme here. i've got about 30 incidents on the boards right now. most of them are spinout crashes and then unfortunately a lot of times what happens is they then

a chase through oakland and eventually ended in this rollover crash. abc7 news was on the scene last night along highway 13. police tell us the driver carjacked the jeep. the chase lasted only four minutes but look how dramatically it ended when the driver crashed into a tree and then rolled down an embankment. two other vehicles were damaged in that collision. the driver and a passenger tried to run away but police caught up with them not far away and arrested both of them. the parents of a san bruno woman killed in a hit and run are asking for lep to find the driver. she was hit by a car on december 19. her parents say she was walking to starbucks like she did every day. she died of her injuries two days later. san bruno police held a news conference are flynn's parents yesterday. they say she volunteered at the humane society and loved to paint. >> she was born here, raised here, lived her entire life here. she was the kindest, sweetest, most caring and thoughtful

unified school district may face layoffs if officials can't figure out what other ways to balance a $23 million budget shortfall. the money is not coming from the state. governor brown's preliminary budget reflects a reduction in the overall general fund. fremont school officials had predicted the district would get over $260 more per student beginning in july. as the budget stands now, that number would shrink to $76 per student. the district is remaining optimistic. it wants to hire 48 more teachers for the new year. san francisco muni is trying to come up with a new way to keep cars out of the sunset tunnel. muni street cars have run through that tunnel since 1928. it is no secret you're not supposed to drive there, but every now and again, drivers get in it anyway. our media partners looked into this problem and they found out this has happened 24 times just since 2010. you can see what happens there. cars get stuck on the tracks. it disrupts service on the muni line for hours. now muni is trying to come up

with a solution to keep cars out of the tunnel. >> we're planning to add more speed bumps on the road later this week and we're going to do a full assessment to see what else we can do, whether that's more signage, more lighting. >> muni's spokesperson says existing signs, speed bumps, and lane striping don't seem to be doing the trick. and i don't think this will surprise you, but in most cases, the drivers who end up in the tunnel are drunk. this video makes me shiver just looking at it. imagine if you were actually there like this group of brave u.s. soldiers. >> taking part at a winter training course in latvia yesterday. the goal is to perfect survival techniques in frigid conditions. they practiced pulling themselves out of the lake. their captain says this tactical maneuver could end up saving lives. okay, we're glad we're not that cold but we might end up getting that wet today if you don't have your proper rain gear on. >> some of us do that for charity, the polar plunge. yeah. how about that.

but yes, it's not nearly that cold here. nor is it going to be and that's why we're seeing so much more moisture coming out of the clouds this morning because we've got that mild southerly flow. you can see it's wet at sfo. as soon as they lit me know, i will let you know via social media, @mikeniccoabc7 how long those delays will be. here's a look at walnut creek, lafayette especially getting hit heavy right now so if you're trying to get on to 680 or 24, it is a slippery one from pleasant hill. this is going to fill in the san ramon valley. some heavier downpours there. right through the dublin grade into castro valley, hayward boulevard getting very wet, and extends down to union city, fremont, and moving towards the sunol grade so watch out for that. as far as your highlights for today, let's take a look at the golden gate bridge. one of the areas that saw one of those heavier downpours and you can see some leftover showers there. showers today, heaviest this morning, longer periods of dry weather from saturday,

most people realize. that's why we're wearing the red. get it taken care of. here's a look at what's going on. i see red. stephens canyon road, saratoga, heading over 85, cupertino, this is heading towards santa clara and campbell. we've got the sunol grade now starting to see some puddles develop there and this is the way it looks in walnut creek, some of our heavier rain falling as we look south of 680. your day planner, heaviest rain this morning and light showers from noon through 7:00 and mild temperatures. wet and windy, that's going to be the scene for this morning's commute. getting a lot of records of standing water this morning so hydroplaning is possible and a highwi highwide wind advisory for the bay bridge commute too. southbound 680, walnut creek to dublin, 22 minutes, that's probably a little bit heavier than that. duo have a crash in san ramon. southbound 101 okay, santa rosa to san francisco, northbound 17, that's coming in at just 24 minutes. i have about a dozen pretty

significant crashes, though, i'll talk about some of those coming up. terrible flooding. you will remember scenes like from th from last month on highway 37. people keeping a close eye on that area. >> there's a plan to fix this road. it is going to come at quite the price. amy hollyfield live for us in novato. amy. >> reporter: hi, reggie and how would you feel about turning this into a toll road, so drivers can help pay for the improvements. everyone agrees that this is a problem that needs to be addressed. look at what highway 37 looked like last month during the rains, so this problem cannot be ignored. it just floods here. it was under water. they had to shut it down. caltrans has ideas, but as a marin "independent journal" is reporting, they will cost about $8 million. they are talking about making this a toll road to help bring in some money to pay for these ideas. improvement ideas include replacing the drainage pipes

with larger pipes, leveling the roadway because of settling, the westbound lanes have dropped about two feet lower than the eastbound lanes. additional pumping and maybe even addings a barrier. highway 37 connects vallejo and marin county goods and commuters move through here about 40,000 vehicles a day. and it's getting busier. caltrans says traffic has increased here by 11% over the past five years. reporting live in novato, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. well, the wet weather brought a tree down in marin. take a look at this. it got caught on some power lines. right now, nicasio valley road is reopened after it was closed overnight. this has been a problem area in the last couple of storms for people who use that road. crews did manage to clean it up in time for the morning commute. president trump is tweeting once again about the violent protests in berkeley. this morning, he says, professional anarchists, thugs, and paid protesters are proving

the point of the millions of people who voted to make america great again. yesterday, the president slammed uc berkeley for the protests and even threatened to pull federal funding from the school. a man arrested in that melee is scheduled to be arraigned in court this morning. uc police say 19-year-old edward kuo faces charges for blocking officers who were trying to move that simplish along. police arrested two other men, gaskin of oakland and suco of san francisco, they're accused of assaulting two students from the group that invited the controversial speaker to campus. campus police say that none of the three arrested is a student at berkeley. solidarity events are being held today to unite citizens in the wake of the president's immigration order. they are using the #we are all america in san jose, the evergreen islamic center is hosting a rally at noon. the president's executive order bars all refugees worldwide for 120 days and nationals from

seven majority muslim countries for 90 days. organizers hope the rallies nationwide will show solidarity with muslim communities. a group of local newspapers is threatening to sue the city of oakland. 36 people were killed when the arts collective caught fire two months ago. the deadliest fire in the city's history. according to the bay area news group, oakland has refused to release police and fire documents that might explain how the unpermitted warehouse was allowed to have tenants and events. the bay area news group is getting oakland until next friday to turn over those records or face a lawsuit. the organization is one of our media partners. we continue tracking breaking news in paris. a french soldier was stabbed at the louvre by a man with a knife, and president donald trump actually just tweeted a comment saying, a new radical islam terrorist has just attacked in louvre museum in paris. tourists were locked down. france on edge again.

overseeing many murders and kidnappings. u.s. prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty in order for him tock extra dated here from mexico. new in the east bay, concord police are searching for this woman. she's accused of threatening walgreens workers with a baseball bat after they tried to stop her from shoplifting. this happened at the walgreens on monument boulevard. investigators hope that you will recognize her from the surveillance photo and give them a call. talks are scheduled to begin early next week between two companies over ferry commuter service from tiburon. the golden gate ferry was ready to begin service monday from tiburon to san francisco and then it didn't happen. that's because the angel island tiburon ferry company objected. the company alleges potential safety issues at that dock because of the size of the golden gate ferries. golden gate ferry contends angel island ferry is just maneuvering for dredging improvements at that dock. new protected bike lanes along san francisco's embarcadero are still in the works as traffic there reaches critical levels. the stretch of road between at&t

park and fisherman's wharf is now on the city's high injury network according to our partners at hoodline. what that means is even though these streets represent just 6% of all city streets, they account for 60% of severe and fatal pedestrian crashes. so now the city hopes a physical separation like planters or concrete barriers or curbs are going to reduce crashes. the project is right now just in the design phase. no completion date at this time. if you live or work in oakland, do not worry when you hear emergency sirens burglarying across the city today. the city will be holding a full system test of its upgraded emergency siren so the first one is at noon. you'll hear a slow wail for about 90 seconds and that will be followed about 15 minutes later by the same thing. the city's worked to upgrade the system is scheduled to be complete bid the end of april. check out live doppler 7. yeah, the bay bridge toll plaza, emeryville, piedmont, oakland,

alameda getting another round of moderate to heavy rain. downpours, that's the big story this morning. it stretches all the way into san leandro, lake sh bio road, marina boulevard, castro as trou try to head through the east bay hills, wash out. that's a very precarious area with mudslides possible. you can see alamo getting wet, all the way out to marsh creek road and up towards concord so this morning, that's what we're going to have our moderate to light showers ponding and hydroplanings are greatest. during evenings, isolated showers and breezy spots will continue. if you're heading to the skrr, winter storm warning continues until 4:00 tomorrow morning. up to 12 inches. 1 to 2 feet of snow above 7,000 feet. low visibility, absolutely. here's a look at this afternoon, though. the yellow starts to lose their luster. a lot of green out there and

nordstrom is cutting ties with ivanka trump's brand. it is official. the chain citing declining sales as the reason but there have been recent calls from an anti-trump group called grab your wallet to boycott all retailers that carry trump brands and products. trump's camp has not responded to the decision. the website shoes.com already dropped her products last week. san francisco is's board of supervisors is identifying someone they say shares blame for the tilting millennium tower. criticism was directed at uc berkeley engineering professor jack maley. he served on the project's peer review board. the panel gave the project the green light in a letter to the city in 2006. supervisor aaron peskin and residents criticized the professor yesterday for not sounding the alarm early enough. >> he knew that there would be dewatering next door and didn't mention anything about it in his letter. he knew there had been no geotechnical peer review but

of issues out there this morning, hydroplaning, flooding, i'm getting a lot of reports of all of that here tod taking you up to westbound 4. we've had a crash blocking for half an hour now. sounds like they're getting that close to pushed off the shoulder. ended up with a t-bone crash. that's a pretty lengthy backup there if you are coming from the pittsburg area down to about 17 miles per hour. also with we have this situation blocking this san ramon, southbound 680 before crow canyon, that was a five-car crash, we still have the three left lanes blocked and apparently this is taking so long because one of the semis involved in this crash actually the trailer came unhooked so they're working on getting that cleaned up and in the meantime, another tractor-trailer hit the back of that one so it's a mess this morning and westbound 580 just before you get to vasco road, we had an earlier crash that has cleared but some review rain through altamont pass right now. you are up to 1 hour 6 minutes, westbound 580, tracy to dublin, so give yourself some extra time
